Sticking with what works Orion finds Panther weakness in pass game, uses to steal win

PROPHETSTOWN – Orion quarterback Craig Matson and wide receiver Josh Ellison liked the left-side pass plays so much against Erie-Prophetstown that they kept doing it.

Turns out, what isn’t broken wasn’t going to be fixed.

With 2.8 seconds left to play against the Panthers at Mosher Field, Matson and Ellison connected on their third short-range pass of the final minute from 7 yards out to hand the Panthers a 21-20 defeat.

Throwing isn’t a great part of the Chargers’ repertoire, but they made it count to give the Panthers (1-1) another stinging onepoint Week 2 defeat.

“We saw that the play worked three times before that.” Ellison said, “Coach [Chip Filler] kept saying, ‘Give the ball to 10.’”

On that last play, as Ellison landed just a couple of feet inside the near-side left pylon, the Panthers were hoping for an offensive pass interference call as a flag was pulled out. However, after about 30 seconds of deliberation, the call turned out to be defensive holding against the Panthers,

much to the shock of Panthers head coach Chuck Milem on the sideline.

Week 2 has not been kind to the Panthers, who now have lost three straight games by one point in that week.

“We came out real composed,” Pierceson said. “We just didn’t have the right mindset. That was a big part of it, but our offense came back and made a big drive.”

Phillip Coers led the Panthers with 103 yards rushing and touchdown runs of 4 and 31 yards, before coming down with a cramp near his left hip with 2:51 left in the third quarter. Nathan Pierceson came in and had a lead-grabbing 23-yard touchdown run off left tackle with 4:37 left in the game.

Dukes get it done on road Dixon improves to 2-0 with Week 2 victory over Burlington Central

BURLINGTON – The Dixon Dukes jumped out to an early lead on Friday night at Rocket Hill and did not relent, as they downed the Burlington Central Rockets 26-6 in Big Northern conference crossover play.

The Dukes opened the night with an 11-play, 71-yard drive. Senior quarterback Nathan Gascoigne was 4-for-5 passing on the drive, and threw for 204 yards and three scores in the first half, with all three TD passes to Kyle LeBlanc.

Dixon coach Dave Smith was glad to see the dynamic senior take advantage of his opportunities.

“He’s a very good athlete, and a senior ... and it shows,” Smith said. “We’re just kind of an offense that takes what they give us.”

Smith praised his offensive line as well, and the decision making of Gascoigne to deliver the ball to LeBlanc in a position to make plays.

Down 20-0 at the break, the Burlington Central offense found its footing coming out of the locker room. The Rockets (0-2) marched 64 yards in eight plays, with Jason Berengo finding the end zone from 1 yard out from the wildcat formation.

“It was nice to finally see the ball get in the end zone right away there,” BC coach Jason Newburger said.

But the Rockets’ hopes were quickly dashed, as Dixon sophomore Arthur Cox took a handoff 72 yards for a score on the Dukes’ next play from scrimmage.

“We get a stop there defensively, and you never know,” Newburger said.

Dixon ran its record to 2-0, winning its opener on the field a week after receiving a forfeit. But Smith said there is still plenty of room for improvement.

“We had too many penalties and too many missed opportunities,” he said. “We need to get that cleaned up quickly. You can tell we’re not quite there yet. We need to get more focused.”

Ghibellini’s hard work pays off for Hawks

OREGON – Football coaches forever stress the importance of hard work and physical training in becoming a better player.

They could point to John Ghibellini, who led Oregon to a 25-7 win Friday over North Boone, as a perfect example.

Ghibellini, one of several two-way Hawks starters, had 193 yards on 30 rushes, as Oregon dominated time of possession and line play.

“He’s completely transformed himself in mind and body,” Oregon coach John Bothe said.

“The change since his freshman year is tremendous and due to all his hard work.”

Bothe was especially happy to get the Big Northern crossover win after losing 36-20 to North Boone last year in a mild upset.

“They shredded us last year with the option and the pass,” Bothe said. “To do what we did tonight after they brought back most of their starters is a testament to how well we

If there was a disappointment for Oregon, it was leading only 12-0 at the half on touchdown runs by Ghibellini and Brayton Finch. Three times in that half, Oregon had first downs inside North Boone’s 30-yard line, but came up empty.

Like a broken record Thornton breaks Sterling’s TD mark in victory over United Township

STERLING – After handshakes, United Township coach Jason Kirby had to track Sterling Thornton down.

The Panthers started off strong against the Sterling Golden Warriors, taking an 8-0 lead in the first quarter and tied the score at 14-14 on its first drive after halftime. Kirby called it the best game for his players in 2 years.

Then Thornton put the Warriors on his back. And after breaking Sterling’s all-time career touchdowns record, the senior quarterback led the Warriors to a 42-20 win.

Thornton accounted for all 6 Warrior touchdowns.

“I just wanted to tell him that he’s a heck of a player,” Kirby said. “He’s a heck of a leader, and he played a heck of a game.”

Thornton finished with 150 yards rushing and 83 yards passing. Two of his touchdowns were through the air – one to Jordan

Asbury and another to Reid Blackburn.

On his fourth rushing score, midway through the third quarter, he became the Warriors’ career leader in touchdowns.

And when his team needed him in a tight game, Warriors coach Jonathan Schlemmer said, he knew who to turn to to get the job done.

“He’s that special kind of guy,” Schlemmer said of Thornton. “We challenge him to go get it done, and he gets it done.”

Thornton’s performance narrowly outshined that of Panthers running back Dakari Mars. UT’s back had more carries (22) and more rushing yards (211), including two 40-plus yard touchdowns in the second half.

But after UT (0-2) tied the score in the third quarter, Thornton led the Warriors on four consecutive touchdown drives before the Panthers managed an answer.

By that time, there was only 1:28 left in the game.

Sterling (2-0) turns its focus to Alleman in Week 3.

Early, way too often Marengo scores 12 seconds into game, rolls past Rockets

ROCK FALLS – It took Marengo all of 12 seconds to score its first touchdown against Rock Falls, and the floodgates opened after that.

The Indians were virtually flawless in the first half on both sides of the ball and cruised to a 50-8 victory against the Rockets in a Big Northern crossover game on Friday at Hinders Field.

Marengo (2-0) has outscored two opponents 83-6 through 2 weeks.

“You’re always happy to get a win,” Marengo coach Matthew Lynch said. “You don’t care how it comes. A win is a win. I’m pleased with the offensive line, how they ran their blocks, and the offensive and defensive execution was really good.”

For Rock Falls (0-2), meanwhile, it was a lesson to be learned from a team that has the tools to do that to many an opponent.

“I don’t have any answers,” Rockets coach Rich Montgomery said. “I talked to the kids about watching TV on Saturday, and watching the defenses. They’re

going to see the same defense we’re running. Major colleges are running the same defense, the same coverages, the same stuff.

I just don’t know what to do. I don’t have any answers, but I’ve got to find some.”

Senior speedster Jarrell Jackson got Marengo off to a fast start, as he returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown, and the Indians were up 6-0 12 seconds into the game. That was only the beginning.

Senior quarterback Zachary Knobloch played less than two quarters, but made the most of his time on the field. He completed 13 of 18 passes for 290 yards and three touchdowns.

Cool thought on hot day Newman’s Brauman interested in cooking up happiness

O

n Wednesday at Roscoe Eades Stadium, popsicles greeted sweaty football players after the Golden Warriors’ practice.

A day later on the practice field at Newman, assistant coach Tim Nelson pointed to mobile water stations around the field.

“We’re stopping pretty much after every drill,” Nelson said.

“We want them to mentally handle the heat, and be able to deal with it. But we have to keep them hydrated.”

It’s been a sizzlin’ week in Illinois, and from the practices this sports editor was able to hit, it seems like coaching and training staffs were aptly prepared.

“What we tell them is that’s its not like it’s only hot on the Newman practice field,” Comets coach Mike Papoccia said. “Every team in the state is dealing with this.”

Being prepared is also the motto of the Boys Scouts, and Newman senior Jared Brauman lives by it.

In the summer of 2014, Brauman prevented a woman from jumping from a moving train, while he was on vacation with his family.

For the Comets, Brauman is prepared to lend a hand in any way he can as a lineman, mainly on the scout team.

“Every week, I have to learn the other team’s offense, and I try my hardest to run it the best that I can,” Brauman said. “The better I do, the better the defense can prepare for the game.”

With temperatures high, teams love having extra players, and it’s likely still to be hot when the Comets take the field to play the Steamers on

Saturday night.

Guys like Brauman come in extra handy.

“We need everybody out here everyday,” Newman senior defensive lineman Victor Francque said. “Every guy, no matter how much they play in games, is willing to give it everything they’ve got, and Jared does that every day.”

Papoccia would take a team and a school full Braumans every year.

“He’s got such a big heart, and he loves being on this team,” Papoccia said. “He’s a kid that has set some big goals for himself in life, and I don’t doubt for one second that he’ll reach them.”

Those goals include a culinary tract when he goes to college, so that he can become a chef.

“When I was thinking about what I wanted to be, I knew I wanted to do something that would make people happy,” Brauman said. “That’s the ultimate for me, and I thought, if you can be a good chef and make good meals for people, that’s a great way to make them happy.”

To this sports editor, that was a pretty cool thought during a hot week.

Tigers find rare air Princeton beats Morrison for first 2-0 start since 2003

PRINCETON — Twelve years.

That’s how long it’s been since the Princeton Tigers started off a football season with two wins.

On Friday, the Tigers reached that rare air in convincing fashion, defeating the Morrison Mustangs 486. It’s a long way from their 0-21 skid which stretched from the end of the 2012 season to last year’s seasonopening win over the Mustangs.

“These kids have really bought in to what we’ve been doing. Went through all the ups and downs that we’ve had. Really bought in,” PHS coach Jesse Snyder said. “It’s a credit to these kids and the kids we had before this year, too. Working their tails off and doing things the right way. We just got to continue that.”

The Tigers got contributions from multiple sources, with six different players finding the end zone.

Quarterback Jake Reinhardt had his hands on four scores.

The Tigers’ senior quarterback got the fun started with a 6-yard run less than 4 minutes into the game.

He then connected with Kai Tomaszewski for a 13-yard TD toss,

also in the first quarter.

Reinhardt added a 6-yard scamper with 20.9 seconds left in the half to give Princeton a 26-6 halftime lead.

In the fourth quarter, he completed his second TD strike, completing a 13-yard pass to Levi Bates, who came down with the ball in the end zone before a Mustang wrestled the ball away as they tumbled.

Reinhardt finished the night with 64 yards rushing and 2 TDs and 87 yards passing with 2 TDs, and gave all the credit to the Tigers’ offensive line.

“Jake’s a real smart kid. Good with ball security (and) makes the right reads,” Snyder said. “Our backs did a great job seeing the holes tonight and the offensive line played well up front.”

Right man, right place Herr steps up for Bureau Valley in win at St. Bede

PERU — Sometimes you are just in the right place at the right time.

Bureau Valley sophomore Bryan Herr was in that right place twice on Friday night as he scored two touchdowns on tipped balls to lift the Storm to a 28-22 victory over the St. Bede Bruins in a Three-Rivers crossover contest at the Academy.

“Lucky plays I guess,” Herr said with a laugh. “It felt great to help my team win.”

Herr’s first tipped ball came off of the hands of a St. Bede receiver that he returned 73 yards to the end zone in the second quarter. The other tip came off teammate Gailen Gibson’s hands as he raced 65 yards for a score on the Storm’s first possession of the third quarter.

But it wasn’t all luck for Herr, who finished with all four Bureau Valley (1-1) scores. He had three touchdown catches for 127 yards and two interceptions, including a key takeaway in the St. Bede end zone midway through the third quarter.

“This week we really stepped up in practice and worked really hard to win as a team,” Herr said.

The Storm saw improvement on the defensive side of the ball, forcing four turnovers and making key stops throughout the game to never relinquish their lead.

“We are so young that our growth is going to be so much every week,” Storm coach Spencer Davis said. “We want to keep getting better and better.”

The Bruins (1-1) took an early lead in the game when Bryant Eustice connected with Braidy Shipp for an 11-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter.

But the Storm had a 20-point second quarter to take the lead for good.

Eustice hooked up with Shipp one more time with 4.6 seconds left in the second quarter on a 51-yard bomb to cut the deficit to six.

“We made the mistakes, they didn’t make the mistakes,” St. Bede coach Jim Eustice said.

“The bounces went their way and they outhustled us.”

No. 3 greater than 2 Red Devils beat Rockets in battle of 2A top-ranked teams

SPRING VALLEY — Two of the the top three teams in Class 2A battled Friday night as the No. 2 ranked Hall Red Devils flexed their defensive muscles and routed the third-ranked Rockridge Rockets 26-13 at Nesti Stadium.

“These kids have worked that hard and they deserved that. Coming with the hot week in practice they sucked it up and proved that they are a legitimate top 10 team,” Hall coach Randy Tieman said.

Rockridge’s offense came out firing on all cylinders early taking a 6-0 lead on a six-yard pass from junior QB Carson Frakes to senior running back Dylan Peterson with 5:14 left in the first quarter.

“Our kids came out and we still had our heads up. They had a nice long drive and we adjusted and we came right back. Our kids kept playing and did not give up even though we were down six early,” Tieman said.

After the early strike, the Red Devils’ defense hunkered down and was a tenacious force for the remaining of the game. They allowed the Red Devils offense to

score 26 unanswered points over the next 40:34 of play until Rockridge finally poked another touchdown in with just under a minute to play.

Trailing 6-0, the Red Devils’ offense got a spark from Chris Hammonds, who scampered 15 yards up the heart of the Rockets defense taking advantage of a 25-yard-loss on a fumbled snap on a Rockridge punt.

With the score 20-, things started getting tight for the Red Devils as the Rockets threatened to cut the Hall lead to one score on a 4th and three pass from the Hall threeyard line. But the short dump pass was picked by senior linebacker Matt Krolak for a 62-yard return that sealed the Red Devils victory.

Senior quarterback Drew Pullam had himself a night under center going 9-for-16 with three touchdown tosses for 171 yards.

Senior receiver Patrick Einhaus also had a breakout night pulling in three catches for 96 yards and two scores.

Now 2-0, the Red Devils will entertain rival St. Bede at Nesti Stadium next week to kick off Three Rivers Mississippi play. They look to climb in next week’s rankings.

LANARK – West Carroll football coach Matt Leitzen ordered a heavy dose of sled work during this week’s practices, in an attempt to be more physical up front.

The Thunder had better get used to it. West Carroll thumped Eastland-Pearl City 40-0 on Friday in an NUIC Northwest clash in Lanark.

“We hit the sleds probably a little harder than the kids would’ve liked,” Leitzen said. “But I think we’re going to do that from now on. We were faster off the ball and stronger at the point of attack than we were a week ago.”

The line opened up running room throughout the game for running backs Ethan Mangler, Eric LaShelle and Logan Barker, who torched the Wildcatz’s defense for 312 yards between the three.

It started early as the Thunder (1-1 overall, 1-1 NUIC Northwest) found themselves backed up deep in their own territory to begin their second possession, before Mangler broke a 91-yard touchdown run to take a 6-0 lead with 6:58 to play in the first quarter.

West Carroll added three more scores in the second, with LaShelle running in from 1 yard to cap a

73-yard drive, Barker adding a 58-yard score, and receiver Luke Jones catching a 6-yard pass from quarterback Kody Plattenberger to enter halftime with a 26-0 lead, and a 323-52 advantage in total yards.

“I think everything is falling into place for us,” Barker said. “This is how we want our offense to look.”

Mangler finished with 146 yards on 15 carries, Barker had three touchdowns and 107 yards, while LaShelle added 59 yards.

The Thunder put up 439 yards of offense in the shutout.

E-PC (0-2, 0-2), meanwhile, had trouble on offense, and quarterback DJ Heeren’s three interceptions didn’t help matters. E-PC did show life in its three seconodhalf possessions as the Wildcatz strung together drives of 12 plays and 14 plays, sandwiched between a lost fumble.

The Milledgeville Missiles improved to 2-0 on the season with a come-frombehind 26-17 victory over the Aquin Bulldogs on Friday at Floyd Daub Field.

After trailing 17-11 at halftime, the Missiles came back to get their first win of the season at home by downing a traditional NUIC power.

Troy Litwiller, Buddy Bibler and Brexton Flynn scored touchdowns for the Missiles (2-0 NUIC Upstate). Jason Brubaker kicked a 27-yard field goal, and the Missiles defense added a safety.

Litwiller scored on a 52-yard punt return, and Flynn scored on a blocked punt.

Amboy 41, Sherrard 0: Dallas Appleman returned a fumble 20 yards to get the Clippers on the board early in the first quarter, and it spurred Amboy on to a

road rout of the Tigers.

Appleman also scored twice on runs, as did Drake Barlow. Ryon Richardson also scored via the rush for Amboy (1-1).

Forward motion Marcos’ offense continues to roll in opening weeks of season

POLO – In a game like this, it’s important for a team not to get lazy and take a step backward.

Well, in Polo’s 50-0 victory Friday over an overmatched Durand, the first backward step the Marcos’ offense took occurred when regular tight end Wyatt Patterson lined up behind center to take a knee to run out the final minute of a dominant first half.

Polo continued its 2015 season-opening blitzkrieg, pouring on 50 points in the first half, including a four-play stretch in which the Marcos (2-0, 1-0 Northwest Upstate Illini – Upstate) scored three touchdowns. Polo has outscored opponents 111-0 through 2 weeks.

Senior Brad Cavanaugh says the impressive showings are due to an all-around excellence boasted by the squad.

“Everyone’s so fast, and

we have good blockers who actually block,” said Cavanaugh. “They just open everything up and create big running lanes for us. We have so much talent with both our backs and our line.”

Next up for the Marcos is Stockton (2-0), which romped past River Ridge in a manner much similar to Polo’s 61-point victory in Week 1. After taking on Stockton, defending state champion Eastland-Pearl City awaits the Marcos.

Against Durand, though, it didn’t matter who touched the ball; yards were going to be gained. Six different ball carriers picked up gains of 12 yards or more in the first half, including touchdown runs of 13, 12, 29, and 39 by Dylan Beers, Brody Grobe (twice), and Jesse Ditzler, respectively.
