Comets pull rank Newman knocks off 2A’s top-ranked team in season opener

EDGINGTON – What could have been a rude way to begin a season turned into a Rude awakening.

Senior running back Brady Rude sliced and diced a stout Rockridge defense for 176 yards and three touchdowns to lead Newman to a 22-8 victory Friday night in a Three Rivers crossover contest.

It was one of the most anticipated games in the state, as the Comets entered the season ranked No. 2 in Class 3A, while the Rockets were No. 1 in 2A. Each team has now won on the other’s home field for 3 years running.

“This is huge, because we had some terrible practices this week,” Newman coach Mike Papoccia said of his 298th career win at his alma mater. “We had a little heart-to-heart about it, and just challenged the kids. They accepted it, and you saw that tonight.”

Newman seized control in the opening moments of the second half. Rude went virtually untouched up the middle for a 65-yard TD run on the second play of the third quarter.

On Rockridge’s ensuing posses-

sion, Comets defensive back Garrett Stringer picked off a pass just in front of the Newman bench.

Rockets QB Carson Frakes had completed 10 passes for 97 yards in the first half. In the second, he completed four for 41 yards.

Senior running back Dalton Woebber, who had rushed for 1,500 yards a year ago, had eight carries for 32 yards against the Comets. Rockridge’s lone score came midway through the first quarter on a 3-yard run by Nathan Parchert, to answer Newman’s initial score.

“Rockridge had a heck of a drive, but we came back and never doubted each other,” senior defensive end Rhett Scroggins said. “We kept working hard and playing with heart.”

New Cards, same result Defending state champ Forreston runs through AFC

FORRESTON – With most of its 1A state championship team having graduated, Forreston’s 33-13 NUIC crossover win Friday over Ashton-Franklin Center demonstrated that a group of reinforcements is on the way.

Among the reinforcements are sophomore running backs Matt Akins and A.J. Christensen. They combined for 174 yards in a first half that saw the Cardinals gain 19 first downs. Christensen had touchdown runs of 16 and 3 yards, and Akins had a 1-yarder. Another sophomore, Gavin Fuchs, scored from 10 yards out as Forreston built a 27-6 halftime lead.

“We have a lot of new faces,” said senior Logan Rogers, one of the few returning starters. “It will take awhile, but we’ll start to round into form. We have a strong sophomore class.”

Another of those sophomores, 6-foot-6, 210-pound Sam Barkalow, had two first-half fumble recoveries. The first came after a Noah Gipe squib kickoff that bounced off an AFC player.

At the time, the Raiders led 7-6.

Six running plays later, Forreston scored and never trailed again.

“That was a backbreaker,” AFC

coach Brad Winterland said.

David Zinke stunned the Cardinals with a 63-yard run on the first play from scrimmage. Two plays later, quarterback Jacob Hilliker scored from 2 yards out for an early 7-0 AFC lead.

Forreston then put together a 14-play drive that stalled after a first-and-goal situation. AFC did manage a pair of first downs, but was forced to punt, and the youthful Cardinals took control of the game.

Christensen returned the punt 20 yards, then topped off the drive with a touchdown on second and third efforts.

“It’s an honor to step into the left wing[back] for Max Barkalow,” Christensen said.

With new quarterback Caleb Poffenberger directing the offense, the Cardinals started the second half with 13 straight running plays, scoring on a Tyler Bryant 4-yard run and taking a 33-7 lead.

“The thing they do so well is making it hard to find who has the ball,” Winterland said. “They had more depth with guys coming in all the time. They’re big and strong.”

LENA – One year removed from winning the 2A state championship, the Eastland-Pearl City Wildcatz looked little like defending champions in a 46-8 loss to Lena-Winslow at the Panther Bowl in Lena.

Called for 20 yards of early penalties and notching just a single first down by halftime, the Wildcatz (0-1, 0-1 NUIC Northwest) struggled to penetrate against the Panthers’ tenacious defensive line.

The Wildcatz were outgained 339-49 in a first half in which they trailed 46-0, more than setting the tone for just how much of a hill they’ll have to climb to get back into the upper echelon of the rugged NUIC once again.

“It’s a good football team,” Wildcatz coach Randy Asche said.

“Our kids are young and are inexperienced, but my kids didn’t quit. We didn’t turn on each other, so that’s a positive.”

Lena-Winslow (1-0, 1-0), without the services of senior quarterback Joe Robinson, relied on a three-man rush attack to produce six touchdowns and 412

total yards.

Payton Clouse was relied on heavily by the Wildcatz, rushing for 65 yards on 20 carries.

Sterling from start Thornton’s long run sets tone for rare Twin Cities battle

ROCK FALLS – Sterling Thornton saw his blockers picking up the wrong defenders, but made it work anyway.

“We blocked the play wrong,” the Golden Warriors’ quarterback explained. “We missed the read key backer. We celebrated the score, but got it figured out right away.”

It was a read-option play and Thornton kept it, beat his defender, and took it 58 yards down the Rock Falls’ sideline for a touchdown on the Warriors’ first snap of the season.

It was a sign of things to come as Sterling had its running game going throughout the night in a 56-6 win over Rock Falls in the first meeting between the teams since 1994.

The Rockets didn’t lie down, however, and answered with an 80-yard scoring drive capped off by a 10-yard touchdown pass from Logan Pillars to running back Blake Wind.

That drive was the only offense Rock Falls (0-1) could muster the rest of the way. Sterling’s defense stuffed the Rockets’ running

game, allowing just 26 yards on 26 carries, and intercepted Pillars once. Running back Braeden Westfall (11 carries, 15 yards) had the most success “They were so fast,” Pillars said.

“Game speed is so much different than what you see in practice.

They made it tough all game for us.”

Sterling stuck to the ground and ran for 368 yards behind its dominant offensive line. Thornton finished with 147 yards and five touchdowns on 11 carries, while throwing for 74 more yards – all in the first half. He didn’t play a second half that was sped up with a running clock. Sophomore Latrell Vaughn, playing in his first varsity game, added 137 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries.

OCK FALLS – SVM photographer Philip Marruffo sent a text message to Patrick Mason about 6 p.m. Friday night to say that the parking lot at the Rock Falls Athletic Complex was already full.

About 30 minutes later, after Mason had left to cover the first football meeting between Rock Falls and Sterling since 1994, Mason confirmed that the lot was more than jammed.

Four days earlier, Ryan Oetting, Donnie Dittmar and Shad Bailey could have predicted such a crowd as they stood on the practice field behind Roscoe Eades Stadium.

The three assistants for the Golden Warriors, once donned uniforms for Sterling in the 1980s and early 1990s.

The Sterling-Rock Falls rivalry was in full tilt in those days, and those three saw incarnations of the rivalry across every sport.

“I could never coach a sport with multiple games in a week,” Bailey said. “We’re going all over the place. It’s too much to go an hour or two one night, and then an hour or two the other way the next night.

“I can understand with the size difference why we don’t play Rock Falls, but there are other teams we should be playing.”

Bailey hopes to see a game with Dixon back on the schedule in the future, but the Dukes also reside in the Big Northern, so that seems unlikely to happen anytime soon.

The consensus seems to be, though, that games like the one on Friday are what made high school sports great to begin with, and games like that might eventually be needed to save high school sports in the future.

Midseason form Panthers’ Binion scores 4 TDs in win over Storm

MANLIUS – Dylan Binion and the Erie-Prophetstown Panthers have a lot of experience coming back this year and in their season opener on Friday night they already looked in mid-season form.

The Panthers, who are ranked #10 in 3A, scored on their first four possessions of the game and racked up 414 yards of total offense as they beat the Bureau Valley Storm 45-22 in a Three Rivers cross-over game.

Binion started off his senior season on a high note, rushing for 210 yards on 17 carries, plus scoring four touchdowns in the game.

“Dylan made some pretty electric plays,” E-P coach Chuck Milem said. “He’s pretty special.

We did a good job upfront but he makes things happen in the back end. We were pretty electric tonight offensively.”

With the Panthers trailing 8-7 in the second quarter, Binion went to work. He scored on rushes of 24 and 2 yards on consecutive possessions to put E-P up 23-8.

That’s when Storm coach Spencer Davis went to his bag of tricks.

With 3:21 left in the first half, BV scored on a hook-and-ladder when Drake Davis passed to Bryan Herr, who then pitched to Will Konneck for a 77-yard touchdown reception.

But for every Storm score, E-P had an answer.

Just two plays later, Binion scored his third touchdown of the half, getting to the outside for an 80-yard run to the end zone.

“We showed some pretty good resiliency because Bureau Valley has some great offensive weapons,” Milem said, about his team holding off the Storm offense.

Hall turns out the lights Steamers’ mistakes costly against state-ranked Devils

FULTON – The Steamers’ final drive of the game told the story of their season opener in a nutshell.

Trailing Hall 21-7 heading into the fourth quarter, Fulton marched 85 yards in 19 plays, taking 8:34 off the clock. But in the end, the Steamers came up empty, as a fumble on the 3-yard line was gobbled up by the Red Devils to preserve the Three Rivers crossover victory.

“You can’t make mistakes and miss chances against that team,” said Fulton senior running back Trey Simmons, who ran for 96 yards and caught a 33-yard TD pass.

“We kept battling all game, but we just didn’t make enough big plays against a tough team.”

Fulton (0-1) controlled the line of scrimmage for the first quarter, but had another deep drive end on downs at the Hall 22. That’s when Hall (1-0) made its move.

Tigers roll on the River Princeton opens season with shutout win over Rams

PORT BYRON – Jacob Reinhardt’s night started with an interception. It ended without another incompletion and three scores to boot.

Now, the Princeton senior quarterback and his fellow Tigers will ride their 42-0 blowout win over Riverdale to a date with Morrison in Week 2.

“It was a good way to start the season,” Reinhardt said.

On Princeton’s first drive, he shorted teammate Levi Bates on a deep ball, falling into the hands of Rams’ safety Dalton Baele.

After that, the Princeton defense continually stalled Riverdale, and the Tiger scoring didn’t stop. Reinhardt finished 6-7 with 64 yards through the air, 4 yards rushing, a passing touchdown and two more on the ground.

“We’ve been working on these plays for three weeks now,” Reinhardt said. “We knew the mistake that we made [on the interception] and we came right back out and corrected it.

“Now, we’re focused on Mor-

rison.”

After Reinhardt’s first goal line run put the Tigers on the board at the 2:29 mark, linebacker Jack Bays recovered a fumbled Rams’ punt attempt in the end zone, helping Princeton close out the first quarter with a 14-0 lead.

In the second, Reinhardt hit Kai Tomaszewski for a 30-yard touchdown pass, followed on the next drive by a Jett Wedekind 31-yard sweep for six.

Meanwhile, the Tigers’ D preserved its shutout by allowing Riverdale past the 50 only once throughout the game. Reinhardt notched his second rushing score on Princeton’s first drive of the third, and running back Austin Rossler took a seven-yard sweep to paydirt in the fourth.

Bruins sink Clippers St. Bede loses sophomore Dannis to leg injury

AMBOY — Amboy-LaMoille’s sputtered in its season-opening 38-7 loss to St. Bede in a game that felt more like a footnote than football.

St. Bede sophomore running back Bret Dannis suffered a serious injury to his lower left leg as he attempted to dive toward the end zone in the third quarter. He collided with Amboy-LaMoille senior Kody Conderman just shy of the right pylon, and both players stayed down. Conderman was able to walk off the field on his own power after a couple minutes, but officials quickly signalled for an ambulance for Dannis.

After a delay of more than 15 minutes, officials notified the teams of the option to suspend the game, but St. Bede coach Jim Eustice said the team captains unanimously decided to complete the contest.

Even without one of their most dangerous weapons, the Bruins simply had too much firepower for Amboy-LaMoille on both sides of the ball. Hopps ended with 153 yards rushing on 15 carries.

The Clippers managed just

two first downs in the first half, and if not for an interception by Cole Olson in Amboy-LaMoille’s own end zone seconds before halftime, the score could’ve been even worse. Carter Shaw also had a first-half interception.

“They were just a lot better than us on the offensive and defensive lines,” Amboy coach Gary Jones said, “and we made too many mistakes that cost us early in the game.”

The speed of the Bruins’ skill players also gave Amboy-LaMoille problems.

Buddy Bibler returned the opening kick for a touchdown, and Jason Brubaker added a 30-yard field goal to give Milledgeville a 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Missiles quarterback Troy Litwiller tossed a 15-yard TD pass to Dylan Alexander to push the score to 17-0 at halftime.

Litwiller then capped the scoring with an 84-yard touchdown run.

Kewanee 27, Morrison 26: The Mustangs

lost a home Three Rivers crossover game on a touchdown pass as time expired.

Kewanee’s Colton Johnson caught an 11-yard pass from quarterback Nick Sheets, and converted the extra point to give

the Boilermakers the win.

Morison had 280 rushing yards, 102 of which came from Andy Bird. The Mustangs led 7-0 after the first quarter on a Cody Southern 2-yard run, and entered halftime tied 7-7.

Bird ran for a touchdown and teammate Jarrett Ruchotzke added another 6 minutes later to go up 20-7.

Dakota 52, West Carroll 6: The Thunder were

buried in a 32-0 hole after three quarters and never got out of it in a road loss.

Salvador Magana had the Thunder’s lone score with a 90-yard kick return in the fourth quarter. Ethan Mangler led the Thunder (0-1, 0-1 NUIC Northwest) on defense with 11 tackles.

The Marcos cruised to an NUIC Upstate road win.

JOHNSBURG – As successful as last season was for Johnsburg, there was one regular-season blemish – a 13-7 opening-night loss to the Oregon Hawks.

Friday was a chance for payback, and the Skyhawks cashed in.

Oregon stayed close early, but Johnsurg’s athleticism proved to be too much in a 53-25 win After Johnsburg (1-0) marched down the field on its opening drive to jump ahead 7-0, Oregon (0-1) was right there with an answer of its own on the Hawks’ opening possession of the 2015 season. Oregon capped off an eight-play drive with a 56-yard touchdown run by senior John Ghibellini.

The ensuing extra point try came up short as Oregon trailed 7-6, but had regained some confidence.

full with Skyhawks junior running back Alex Peete who finished with over 300 yards of total offense and five touchdowns.

“Johnsburg is such an athletic team, and we knew [Alex] Peete was a

really good running back and our worst fears came true tonight,” Oregon coach John Bothe said.

“This might be the best team we play against all season. Their offensive line was so tough to play against, and our inability to stop Peete is what really hurt us.”

Oregon was able to run the ball for 282 yards and were led by Ghibellini, who finished with 132 yards on 21 carries and junior Caleb Mennen, who finished with 80 yards on six carries.

Senior Maverik Good led the Hawks in receiving with two catches for 42 yards. Despite the loss coach Bothe did see a lot of positives in Friday’s opener.

“I was really happy with the effort we gave tonight,” Bothe said.

“This is just one game and we learned a lot tonight and will use what we learned to help us improve.”
