The Boss Carpet One Family Pictured: The Boss Family
History“Flooring” is our first language in the Boss family, as we have been in the flooring business for five generations. Both of my great grandfathers fabricated braided rugs in their rug mills in Amboy, IL and Hendersonville, North Carolina, and in 1981 my parents, John and Julie Boss, opened Boss Carpet in downtown Dixon. After growing up working in the business and managing it after college, I (Ben Boss) purchased the business from my family six years ago and joined the cooperative Carpet One.

The Schilling Funeral Home Family Pictured: John and John Paul Schilling circa 1978 The Schilling family originated in Erie, IL where Dick Schilling owned and operated Schilling Funeral Home. While the Schillings were growing up in Erie, the family lived in the funeral home, and during the holidays would take down their Christmas tree for visitations and funerals, only to put the tree back up after services were held. Dick Schilling had 4 sons and a daughter, two of his sons became funeral directors, John and Rich Schilling. John’s brother Rich Schilling has owned Preston-Schilling in Dixon, IL since 1975. Schilling Funeral Home & Cremation was originally started by the Melvin family in 1913, on 6th avenue in Sterling. Ollie and Ross Melvin built the funeral home at its current location in 1974. The current location on 1st avenue was the site of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, before the church moved to its current location next to Newman Catholic High School. John Schilling purchased Melvin Funeral Home in 1975, and was named MelvinSchilling Funeral Home. In 1998 the Melvin-Schilling was changed to Schilling Funeral Home, and now Schilling Funeral Home & Cremation. John Paul Schilling grew up in the Sauk Valley Area, attended Sterling High School, graduated from Worsham
College of Mortuary Science in 1998, and successfully completed the Medicolegal Death Investigators training course at St. Louis University School of Medicine. John Paul Schilling is a 3rd generation funeral director of Whiteside County, and all three of those generations have served the people of the Sauk Valley Area and Whiteside County. “It is amazing that my grandfather made a decision 84 years ago to become a funeral director and to serve the people of his community, and how that decision has been influential on my father John, uncle Rich, and now my life. We are still serving the people of the Sauk Valley and Whiteside County, in many ways, the same as my grandfather did so many years ago” “ It is an honor and privilege to help families in our community, at a very difficult time in their life. The friendships and bonds that are made, keep us focused on the different types of service that the people of our community request.” Now you can see why the Schilling family has had the motto “Our Family Serving Your Family” for so many years. Their entire family has cared for, and helped families through difficult times for a long time, and take pride in that statement.

The American Family Insurance Family
PROUD TO BE NAMED AN AMERICAN STAR CERTIFIED AGENCY “My customers are the greatest. As an American Family agent, I consider it an honor to be trusted with helping you protect your family through good times and bad.” Bob Maltry started with American Family 21 years ago on February 1st, 1995. He moved to Dixon in February 1995 to take over the agency. After 2 very successful years, the company approached him about an opportunity to help the company grow. With his past management experience running health clubs, he was promoted to the position of District Manager in Dayton, Ohio in November 1997. He was recruited to help open the south region of the state. His job was to hire and train the agents that would serve that area. After fulfilling his 2 year management requirement, he and his family moved back to Dixon on April 1st, 2000, to take back his agency.
Over the past 16 years, Bob’s 3 sons have worked in the agency with him. Two of his sons have since started their own careers. Austin has moved on to a management position with Walmart in Sterling. Drake is starting his senior year at Trinity International University in Deerfield, IL. He will receive his degree in Sports Wellness Management. He is also a starting pitcher for their baseball team. Peyton, a senior at Dixon High School, is the last in line to work in the office. He currently assists Bob 3 days a week after school. Over three decades later, the Burkardt’s LP Gas family has grown to include 21 employees, 12 bulk delivery trucks and more than 6500 residential, agricultural and commercial customers in eight counties. Our first year in business we delivered 750,000 gallons of propane. Last year, deliveries had grown to more than 8.7 million gallons. And, although we’ve grown, our focus hasn’t changed from providing friendly, reliable propane service. At 78 years old now, Bill has retired from the propane business, but takes care of business at Edgewood Golf Club, which Bill and Bev have owned for more than 7 years. Bev is the purchasing agent for all the propane sold and delivered by Burkardt’s, most often working seven days a week. 2015 finds Mike recognizing his 30th year at Burkardt’s LP Gas as the General Manager. Mike is also the President of the Illinois Propane Education and Research Council. Paula is the Credit Manager and handles Accounts Payable.
Pictured L-R: Bill and Bev Burkardt, Paula and Mike Faivre On March 16, 1982, Bill and Beverly Burkardt founded Burkardt’s LP Gas to serve the Ogle county/Polo area. As a local, family-owned business, our priority has always been to provide the kind of propane service we would want for our own family. When we started Burkardt’s LP Gas, we were a one-truck operation with just two employees, Bill and Bev. During the first 6 months of being in their own business, Bev also worked at Hazelhurst Elevator as a bookkeeper during the day. Bill and Bev raised four daughters, Pam, Patti, Paula and Penny. In 1985, Paula’s then-boyfriend, Mike Faivre began working at Burkardt’s LP Gas. Mike and Paula were married in 1988 and after having three
Burkardt’s LP Gas is a retail propane gas marketer serving a 45 mile radius of Polo. We deliver propane for residential, agricultural, and commercial uses. Our fleet of 12 bulk delivery trucks allows us to be responsive to our customer’s needs. To continue to improve our service over the years, Burkardt’s LP Gas has three satellite plants in Oregon, Leaf River and Sublette with additional storage of more than a quarter of a million gallons. This additional storage ensures you will always have a secure supply of propane. It helps keep propane prices stable by allowing us to purchase propane in large quantities and store it. Increased storage capacity also reduces transportation costs — all savings that we can pass along to you.

In addition to providing a secure supply of propane at a stable price, Burkardt’s LP Gas takes its commitment to safety and service very seriously. All of our service technicians participate in the Certified Employee Training Program sponsored by the National Propane Gas Association. This valuable safety training helps ensure your gas system is installed correctly for your safety, and that it operates as efficiently as possible. Our service technicians continually update their safety education and training. In addition to delivering propane, Burkardt’s LP Gas has a well trained service team. We sell and install water heaters, radiant heaters, wall and hanging heaters, fireplaces, etc. Our friendly and knowledgeable employees can handle all your propane-related needs. We love visiting with customers and providing you the same level of service we want for our own family. At Burkardt’s LP Gas, we feel it is important to give back to the community that has given us so much. Burkardt’s does this by supporting local churches, schools, fire departments, little leagues, nursing homes, and many other non-profit organizations. In June 2014, Burkardt’s LP Gas added a new PINK delivery truck to our fleet. The PINK truck was designed to honor cancer awareness. Burkardt’s LP Gas will be donating one cent for each gallon of propane delivered by our beautiful, PINK truck to local cancer research.

Jones Funeral Homes Funerals as Unique as Your Life for over 119 years Jones Funeral Home in Dixon was founded in 1897 by Royal Jones. His wife Celia was the third woman in Illinois to receive a funeral director’s license and she continued the business after Royal’s death in 1904. Their son J. Willard Jones joined the business in 1928. Willard’s wife Elizabeth became a licensed funeral director and continued the business after his death in 1947 and was joined by their son Patrick in 1957. In 1986, Patrick’s son Pat Jr. joined the firm and now is the 4th generation to own and operate the funeral home. In 1972, Mihm Funeral Home in Amboy was purchased by the Jones’ and is now the Mihm-Jones Funeral Home. The Jones Funeral Homes are full service funeral homes offering all levels of funeral and cremation services. They offer a full range of funeral and cremation options. They also offer prearrangement services and still offer guaranteed pre-need contract. Our prearrangement services are handled by the same licensed staff that assists the families at their time of need. General office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Weekends and evenings by appointment. Jones Funeral Home of Dixon is housed in a beautiful stone building that was once built as a private residence. This residence was built by William J. McAlpine in 1903 as his private home. William McAlpine was a builder with a strong reputation for quality work. He was also responsible for the construction Examples of the fine craftsmanship of the Dixon Public Library, the of McAlpine in the current location of original KSB Hospital building, Jones Funeral Home in Dixon. the Lee County Courthouse, Altgeld Hall at Norther Illinois University, the Union State Bank building in Dixon, the Dixon Opera House, the 1907 Grand Detour bridge and the Dixon National Bank building which was billed as Dixon’s first skyscraper. 1n 1928, William’s wife passed away and two years later he sold this home to Celia Jones who was at the time the operator of the Jones Funeral Home in Dixon. It is rather ironic that soon after selling his home to the Jones family, Mr. McAlpine fell, broke a hip and developed pneumonia which caused his death. His own funeral was the first one held in his former residence and now the location of the new Jones Funeral home.

Vaessen Brothers Chevrolet , Inc. was started in 1926 by Paul & Ralph Vaessen as an autorepair shop. In 1933, the Vaessens obtained the franchise with Chevrolet. In 1953, the dealership expanded. While repairs were still being made at the first location, the new building (currently known as Rt. 52 Roadhouse) consisted of a showroom, office, and a 3 bay service station. By 1976 the dealership was ready for expansion again to where they are currently located. In 1977, Ralph Vaessen retired and his son Neal, joined the business. When Paul retired, Neal and his wife Donna became full owners of the business. Their three sons: Greg (Fixed Operations Manager), Jeff (Parts Manager) and Nick (Sales Manager) have all joined the business. In 1998, the business underwent a remodel in the current building. Leffelman & Associates, Inc.
Our family protecting your family.
www.leffelmanassoc.com
Because Leffelman and Associates treats all their customers like family, it is fitting that their slogan is “Our Family Protecting Your Family”. Customer satisfaction is key to their business when writing all lines of insurance including personal, commercial, farm, crop, life, and health. They focus on integrity, professionalism, and stability while striving to provide the finest quality coverage and service for the best price. The Leffelman staff has a very heavy focus on designations because of the education requirements. The Leffelman Family Chris is a CIC (Certified Insurance Counselor), and Tess is almost done with her CIC. Tess, Julie, and Lisa are all CISRs (Certified Insurance Service Rep), and Lexi is working on her CISR. Chris and Lisa have AFIS (Agribusiness and Farm Insurance Specialist) designations, and Riley is working on his AFIS. Larry Leffelman bought the Wilson Roemmich Agency in Sublette in 1969. He bought the Burkhardt Agency in Sublette in 1972, the Duffy Agency in Amboy in 1980, and the Ortgiesen Agency in Amboy in 1990. Larry’s wife, Rose, started working in the agency in 1977. Larry hired his cousin, Gary Zinke, in 1980. His daughter, Chris Klein, started working for the agency as a file clerk when she was 12, and started working there full time in 1985. Chris’s daughter, Lexi, came to the agency full time in 2013 after getting her degree in Business Management from Sauk Valley Community College. Chris’s son, Riley, started full time in 2014 after graduating from U of I with a degree in Agricultural and Consumer Economics. Chris also hired her cousin (and God-daughter), Tess Fleming in 2007 after earning her Marketing degree at Bradley University. They have three offices in Sublette, Amboy, and LaMoille with 14 employees (the youngest of whom is Chris’s 16-yearold daughter, Grace). Since Larry’s retirement, Chris is handling most of the commercial insurance with Tess’s help, and Larry is still around for consultation. Gary’s focus has been on farm and crop insurance, and since he is semi-retired, Riley is taking over the farm and crop insurance under Gary’s and Chris’s guidance. Tess is the Life and Health specialist, although, like most of the staff, she writes all lines of insurance. Lexi does the book keeping and accounting along with writing and servicing all personal lines of insurance. Other members of our business family include Lisa Quest and Gary Jones in Amboy, Linda Purvis and Lori Althaus in LaMoille, and Julie Burkardt and Teresa Davis in Sublette. An example of how Leffelman’s handle their claims came on June 22nd this year when a tornado devastated a large part of Woodhaven Lakes and also several homes and farms near Sublette. Hundreds of property claims needed to be reported. The night of the tornado, they called all of their companies to put them on notice. The farm property claims were handled so fast that one farm house that lost its roof had it replaced just 2 days after the storm. Woodhaven was so devastated that it took 5 days before anyone was allowed into the park so workers could clear trees from the roads. The agency was invited to go into the park on the day they opened it in order to service hundreds of their customers. One of their companies, Foremost Insurance (a Farmers Company) had its mobile claims bus parked outside Woodhaven, and then inside the park once they opened, and fed all the employees, volunteers, and campers from Wednesday until Sunday night. Some customers had their checks for their totaled properties on Saturday – the first day anyone was allowed into the park. Leffelman & Associates’ Sublette office is open Mon – Fri 8:00 to 5:00, and Saturday morning 8:00 till noon. Amboy and LaMoille offices are open Mon, Tues, Wed, and Fri from 8:30 – 4:30, and on Thursday 8:30 till noon.

Golden Key’s Hallmark Gold Crown Store 20+ years ago, Golden Key Motors was opened! Today, in the same location, it is called: Golden Key’s Hallmark Gold Crown Store! “How did that happen?”, you may ask! Well, it was a transformation that no one saw coming, but it is what owners Terry and Penny Bright say “they were born to do!” Golden Key’s Hallmark offer many gift ideas, home decorating ideas, their own Golden Key Candles, Isabel Bloom, classes on wreath making, Shop Small Saturdays 4 times a year, Team Jess Days 2 times a year, free gift wrap and lay-away and so much more! “It is a privilege to be a small business owner. Not that it’s easy, because it isn’t, but because it is a labor of love” say the Brights. “Just like a child, our business has grown, matured and gets into trouble when we’re away! It seems the computer knows more when we’re gone!” Terry and Penny work together every day. Their son, Adam (33) is a full time Electrical Engineer, lives in Sycamore with his wife Ashley and daughters Haley and Aubrey. Adam is the computer “go to” guy and website designer. He is the ONLY one who could incorporate ALL of Hallmark’s SKU’s into Golden Key’s computers, when not even Hallmark or Quickbooks could do it! Megan (28) is a full time RN at CGH and helps out when available and works around her hours at CGH. You will often see Megan on Shop Small Saturdays, Team Jess Days and Holiday Open Houses.

From Golden Key Motors to Golden Key Gifts to Golden Key Candle Co. and now Golden Key’s Hallmark Gold Crown Store! In April of last year, Hallmark called Golden Key. Yes, they called Golden Key! Hallmark has a new kind of store, a “Multi-Focus” store, where they put a Hallmark department into an existing store. Through their process of searching where to begin, they decided to begin with towns who had lost a Hallmark. This is where Sterling fit in. Next, they searched businesses in Sterling and Golden Key kept popping up. According to Hallmark, Golden Key “stuck out like a sore thumb... in a good
way!” So, Hallmark flew up from Kansas City and Terry and Penny began to listen. They already knew that our area really missed Hallmark and their card selection. They decided to go ahead and add their own Hallmark Department. They now carry hundreds of Hallmark cards, ornaments and gift ideas for all ages! Stop in and see for yourself! There is much to be proud of here at Golden Key, but their proudest work is “Team Jess... ‘Til There’s A Cure!” Team Jess honors Sterling’s Jefferson School teacher and Terry and Penny’s niece Jessica Coleman Strader. Jessica lost her battle with breast cancer in 2013 at 29 years old. To honor Jessica’s memory and raise awareness for breast cancer, Team Jess Day is held the last Saturday in March and the third Saturday in October. During those two events, funds are raised to support scholarships for high school seniors! Golden Key has donated over $8000 and will donate another $4000 in May of 2016. Graduating seniors in Sterling, Prophetstown, Rock Falls and new this year, Newman, may apply for the $1000 scholarship to each school. Golden Key asks the students to write a 500 word essay on “Someone who inspires you!”. Golden Key adds that they could not raise funds alone! Together, with donations from individuals and other businesses like The Beautiful You Boutique, Showplace Antiques & Treasures, Tuff Dog Bakery, Candy Bouquet and Froggies, who donate raffle items for each Team Jess Day. The Factory in Sterling, which is owned by Jared Strader, Jessica’s husband, has a Pink specialty drink. When ordered, a portion of the proceeds go to the scholarship fund. Touchdown for Ta Ta’s donate $2000 each year from their wonderful event in October! Sterling’s Challand Jr. High made a donation from Sterling Strong shirts they sold! Sterling teachers, Melissa Rodriguez Kyarsgaard and Jaime Camps Blakeslee made a generous donation from their “HOPE” Paint Classes! Golden Key sincerely says thank you to our community for their support of Team Jess and their constant support for Golden Key!

My first job working in a flower shop was when I was a senior in high school. While working in flower shops, I went to college and became certified in floral horticulture and design from Kishwaukee College, then on to receive a Bachelors of Education with a minor in agriculture from Western Illinois University. Weeds, Inc. was started in my garage in 2001, then in 2009 my husband, Mark Oprian and I opened our current storefront. Mark is the bookkeeper and we have three fabulous employees.
