There’s losing, and there’s losers D

IXON – The insults have been coming for a while.

Then the injury happened Friday night.

It wasn’t a terrible injury. Better than initially expected, in fact.

But the mild foot sprain gave Matt Coffey ample time to sit in the golf cart and think about all the nasty little barbs the small people will throw at the Dukes this upcoming week as they prepare for LaSalle-Peru.

If the first few weeks were any indicator, the Dukes should be able to beat the Cavaliers. From what Coffey told me earlier this week, that won’t be the overriding opinion in the halls of the high school.

“You walk down the hallway at your own high school, and your student body is telling you how bad you’re going to get beat on Friday night,” Coffey said during a phone interview Wednesday.

“Why would you want to learn in an atmosphere like that?”

Dixon’s athletic department is in a tough spot. Because losers feed on struggling teams like parasites. Sure, Dixon programs like track and cross country are excellent year-in, year-out. But football runs the show, and basketball is its right-hand man.

And, let’s face it, the Dukes’ marquee teams haven’t given their fans a lot to feel good about in recent memory.

Brady’s got backs Sophomore one of several Comets to run roughshod

FULTON – On most teams, Brady Rude would be the workhorse. On the Newman Comets, he’s one of many thoroughbreds in the stable.

In Newman’s 55-14 Three Rivers North romp over Fulton on Friday, the sophomore fullback carried just nine times Friday night, but he piled up 150 yards and two touchdowns.

Rude’s TDs were 28 and 62 yards, and he also had a 35-yard gain. Though he averaged almost 17 yards per carry, Rude’s not bucking for more carries.

“It’s an opportunity to even be on the team as a sophomore,” he said. “I just take what they give me and make the most out of it.”

Halfback Jake Snow added 118 rushing yards on 13 carries and also scored two TDs. “Having Brady is definitely helpful, because instead of having two backs that are dangerous, now we have that third one that’s just as fast as the two halfbacks,” Snow said.

Newman (4-1, 3-0) scored early and often. The Comets marched 58 yards for a score on their first possession, with Snow going the final 11 as

Newman led 7-0 with 6:55 left in the opening quarter.

Fulton (1-4, 0-3) responded with an 80-yard TD drive highlighted by Ethan Jones’ passing.

Jones had completions of 21 and 13 yards, and a pass interference call set up an 8-yard TD connection between Jones and Jason Osborn.

The Comets replied with an 80-yard scoring drive of their own. Rude’s 35-yard run and A.J. Sharp’s 24-yard pass to Shayne Allen set up Dillan Heffelfinger’s 7-yard TD run as Newman took a 14-7 lead with 11:54 left in the first half.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Comets got a strip-six as they

stood Osborn up before stripping the ball loose. Trevor Bolin returned it 21 yards for a touchdown and suddenly it was 21-7.

“We were waiting for a whistle on that, and there wasn’t a whistle,” Fulton coach Patrick Lower said. “It was an unfortunate play for us. That took a lot of momentum out of the game.”

After a Fulton three-and-out, Newman made it 28-7 with a 74-yard drive. Sharp’s 22-yard completion to Bryce Ivey came two plays before Rude’s 28-yard TD with 7:45 left in the half.

Tristan Smith’s 18-yard run on a fake punt set up the Steamers’ other TD, which came on a 28-yard shovel pass to Devin Kuehl that made it 28-14 with 3:44 until halftime.

Newman tacked on two more TDs before intermission, as Rude provided his 62-yarder before Heffelfinger snared a pick-six interception return with 17 seconds left in the half to make it 41-14.

Snow added a 48-yard TD run and Mac Olson a 17-yard TD in the second half.

Jones, who has been nursing a bad ankle, left the game in the third quarter when he reaggravated the injury. Lower said he thought Jones would be OK.

Behind at Hinders Rockets dig hole too deep against undefeated Indians

ROCK FALLS – It took Rock Falls 9 seconds to get behind the 8-ball against Winnebago, and it didn’t get any better from there.

The Indians’ Mike Pate returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown, and Winnebago was off to the races in a 63-32 victory on Friday night at Hinders Field.

Winnebago (5-0, 3-0 Big Northern West), ranked sixth in Class 3A, scored touchdowns on its first six possessions on the way to a 42-6 advantage. The only time the Indians didn’t score in the first half was when they ran out of time.

“We don’t want to take anybody lightly,” Pate said. “We made some mistakes last year of underestimating teams, and this year we’re trying to take each team week-byweek and just get better.”

Mortonson relieved Mammosser at quarterback after that and accounted for two fourth-quarter scores, on a 61-yard pass to Trenden Schwindenhammer and a 1-yard run by himself.

The Rockets racked up 482 yards off offense, with 434 yards of it through the air. It translated to just 18 points when each team had its starters in the game, though, and Pate, Winnebago’s middle linebacker, could accept that.

“You kind of figure with these kind of teams, they’re going to get some yards on you,” Pate said. “They’re going to get some bigger plays.

more used to Big Northern football, where you just pound the ball. We had to make the adjustment, and I think we did a pretty good job of it.”

Rock Falls, meanwhile, didn’t keep the Winnebago offense out of the end zone until after the subs entered the game. The Rockets have allowed 46 (Harvard), 66 (Lutheran), 56 (Byron) and 63 (Winnebago) points in their four losses.

“Week-in and week-out, we ask them to give everything they’ve got,” Rock Falls coach Scott Berge said. “Sometimes what we’ve got is good, and sometimes what we’ve got isn’t good. We’re trying to put them in the best situation possible to make something happen.”

Mammosser completed 23 of 41 passes for 310 yards and two touchdowns, but was also intercepted three times, with two of them being pick-sixes. His top targets were Daegan Wharff (8 catches, 89 yards) and Connor Cain (6-68).

Rock Falls managed just 48 yards rushing, with Brendon LeBarron (11-22) leading the way.

“When you become one-dimensional, even with spreading it out and being a gun-slinging team anyway, if you can’t run the ball, it makes it a little tough to find the space,” Berge said.

Warriors capitalize on turnovers; overcome their own

STERLING – Forcing turnovers isn’t what wins games. It’s what you do with those takeaways that makes the difference between wins and losses.

On Friday night, it was the Sterling Golden Warriors who excelled at the latter in their conference opener at Sterling Chevrolet Field at Roscoe Eades Stadium.

Sterling turned three of LaSalle-Peru’s four turnovers into touchdowns, and limited the damage on its four turnovers in a 21-10 victory.

“All week, the coaches told us to limit our mistakes and then take advantage of theirs,” Sterling junior Rafael Escalante said. “That’s what we did.

We got our offense going in the second half, our defense shut them down, and we got a big win.”

Sterling’s scores were seemingly gift-wrapped by a Cavalier team whose colors remind one of Christmas.

The first was a particularly strange play, as Escalante was waiting to down a punt inside the LP 5-yard line.

As Escalante got behind the bouncing ball near the goal line, LP return man Logan Zeman inexplicably touched the ball.

Escalante jumped on it for the recovery, and Byrant Lilly scored on Sterling’s next play from 4 yards out.

“I was just doing my job, getting behind the ball so it wouldn’t go in the end zone,” Escalante said. “I was as surprised as anybody at what happened.”

The Cavaliers (1-4, 0-1 NIB-12 West) answered right back with a 10-play, 90-yard touchdown drive, highlighted by a 42-yard pass play from Colby Sassano to Damion Allen.

But Sterling (3-2, 1-0) forced a punt after a Lilly interception, and the

Warriors ran out the rest of the half on a 14-play, 57-yard drive to the LP 13-yard line. The drive as aided by a fake punt conversion and an LP offsides on fourth-and-short, but ended with a missed field goal as time expired.

The Cavs fumbled the opening kickoff of the second half, but a bad snap on a field goal attempt kept the score tied at 7. After an LP punt, Sterling fumbled the ball, then the Cavs fumbled it right back, and Lilly scored from 12 yards out for a 14-7 lead.

LP put together a 9-play, 55-yard drive that ended with a Jon Sydlowski 27-yard field goal, then Sterling threw interceptions on back-to-back drives, both deep forays into Cavalier territory.

But the Cavs punted after the first pick, then coughed the ball up on another bizarre play after the second.

On first-and-10 from its own 7, LP ran a halfback pass play. But running back Taylor Thompson was tackled in the end zone

by Joe Brouilette when he stopped to make the pass.

“I thought it was another jet sweep, but then he stopped on the designed pass play,” Brouilette said.

“I saw a chance to make a big play, and I tackled him before he could get rid of the ball for what I thought was a safety.”

Instead, Alex Soriano saw the ball bouncing near the back of the end zone and jumped on it, giving the Warriors a 21-10 lead with 5 minutes left in the game.

“We definitely weren’t expecting that play, and I couldn’t believe the ball was just bouncing there in front of me,” Soriano said.

“We blitzed the gaps a lot in the second half, and it paid off that time. Joe made a monster hit, I saw the loose ball and just grabbed it.”

Cutbacks doom Dukes Singbush runs rampant, spoils Dixon’s homecoming

As his Dukes ran back to the sideline, he hollered, “One guy?

Where’s all our purple?”

The pursuit wasn’t there, allowing Geneseo’s Rayce Singbush to cut back from outside the right hashmarks to the middle of the field and convert a third-and-10 late in the first quarter Friday night at A.C. Bowers Field.

It was a big play, but the thirdshortest carry of Singbush’s night at 11 yards. The cutbacks cut deeper as the half went on, and the Maple Leafs (4-1, 1-0 Northern Illinois Big 12 West) got back on track with a 56-0 rout of Dixon (1-4, 0-1), spoiling homecoming for the Dukes.

“It’s awful,” Dixon senior Dane Schielein said. “It’s embarrassing to come out here on Senior Night [homecoming] and see those numbers on the scoreboard. It’s something we need to get over before we get after L-P next week.”

“We definitely needed to work on getting downfield better

with our blockers and getting downfield and helping running backs,” Singbush said. “That really helped us this week, because I saw blockers downfield and doing their job.

“When the linemen give you that big of a hole, you’re happy, but you’re also like, ‘That’s a lot of running,’” Singbush said. “It puts a big smile on my face.”

Dukes muffed the ensuing kickoff, allowing Luke Snyder to hit Drew Himmelman from 3 yards out for a 42-0 lead and a running clock to start the second half.

The Dukes managed to corral Singbush for just 2 yards on his only second-half carry, getting a stop on third-and-5.

But after marching to the Geneseo 15, JD Gieson (6-for-14, 56 yards, 2 INT; 8 rushes, 58 yards) telegraphed a pass to the left

sideline and was picked off. The clock would keep running, and the Dukes would regret missed opportunities early on.

Their opening drive stalled at the Geneseo 15. After hitting Matt Coffey on a pumpand-go rout four plays earlier for 21 yards, the same play was thwarted by double-coverage.

“Dixon’s offense can get you on a string, on a yo-yo,” Geneseo coach Larry Johnsen said, “because they do some things that are hard to defend. I know they’re young and stuff like that, but I thought it was a good challenge for us.”

The Dukes turned it over on downs at the Geneseo 41 on their next possession, a punt fake run by Quinton Douglas (14 carries, 68 yards; 3 receptions, 24 yards) going for 3 yards on fourth-and-9.

On the next Dukes possession, Gieson, who was harassed all night, scrambled left, then back to his right and threw the ball into the middle of the field. It looked safe for a moment, until Tyler Mackey dove to pick it off.

Geneseo scored on all five of its first-half possessions and outgained Dixon 461-163. The Leafs rushed 36 times for 424 yards, a clip of 11.8 yards per carry.

Offensive onslaught EP’s Williams rushes for 342 yards and 4 TDs

MANLIUS – The Erie-Prophetstown Panthers came into Manlius Friday night with one thing on their minds: Breaking a 16-game losing streak to Bureau Valley that predates the creation of the EP co-op.

The Panthers got the job done, taking an early 8-0 lead and never looking back in a 42-29 win, spoiling the Storm’s homecoming while improving to 4-1 on the season. Bureau Valley fell to 1-4.

The story of the game was offense.

The Storm never figured out a way to stop the Panther running attack, led by senior Nick Williams, who rushed for 342 of the Panthers’ 529 yards of total offense on 39 carries.

Williams’ night was highlighted by scoring runs of 45, 48 and 53 yards.

“Our offensive line has been playing at a high level all year,” Erie-Prophetstown coach Chuck Milem said. “Our fullback gets a lot of credit for it, but our offensive line is playing at a very high level. Owen McConnell is our anchor there at right guard, and Ken Cole at left guard. They’ve

The game started with a flurry, as the Storm answered the Panthers’ first score with a Parker Neuhalfen touchdown run of 64 yards on the first play after the ensuing kickoff.

Tommy Johnston got the Storm within one with the PAT kick.

After the teams exchanged scores, EP’s Ethan Howard gave his team some breathing room in the opening minute of the second quarter with a 10-yard

scoring run.

After a calm in the offensive barrage, the Panthers looked to have the game won when Chris Bauer scored from 5 yards out with 3:49 left to play.

But the Storm tried to

come back, as Neuhalfen hit Johnston for 41 yards with 3 minutes left in the game.

Neuhalfen was also good to Jake Smith for the two-point conversion to draw his team within seven at 30-23.

The Panthers fell on the ball on the onside kick by Bureau Valley, and then sealed the victory on Williams’ 53-yard scoring scamper.

The Storm still didn’t give up, scoring once more with 1:41 left as Neuhalfen hit Smith. The Storm tried another onside kick, but the Panthers recovered.

“I really thought that we played harder than heck,” BV coach Jeff Ohlson said. “If you take out the fourth quarter, it was basically a one-possession game from the first quarter to the fourth quarter.”

Ohlson is not ready to give up on his team or the season.

“We’ve got four games left,” he said. “If we come out and play those four games like I know that we can, good things will happen. By any means, we have not lost anything until that final whistle blows. We’ve lost to quality people. We have to get good things done in practice and go from there.”

Back to good Clippers pick up second straight win, knock off Mustangs

Jason Bontz ran for 215 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Amboy Clippers to a 27-18 victory over the Morrison Mustangs in a Three Rivers North battle Friday night at The Harbor.

Bontz carried the ball 30 times for the Clippers (2-3, 2-0), and had scoring runs of 9 yards in the first quarter and 5 yards in the second period.

Amboy and Morrison (2-3, 1-2) traded touchdowns all night long, but Liam Ohlendorf’s 31-yard TD pass to Damon Quest late in the third quarter secured the victory. The Clippers made three of their four PAT kicks, while the Mustangs failed to convert any of their three 2-point conversion tries.

Ohlendorf, who added a 1-yard TD run right before halftime, completed half of his six passes for 76 yards. Ryan Leffelman caught two passes for 45 yards, and Chris Jones ran 12 times for 79 yards for the Clippers.

Amboy outgained Morrison 306-167 on the ground, but the Mustangs passed for 203 yards compared to the Clippers’ 76.

Mason Sitzmore threw two scoring strikes to Ryan Mayberry, from 44 yards in the first quarter and 38 yards in the third period. Wildcatz fight way to 5 EPC beats Le-Win to stay unbeaten; Missiles’ rally falls short

Eric Schaney ran for 152 yards and three touchdowns, and the Eastland-Pearl City Wildcatz remained undefeated with a 34-21 road victory over the Lena-Winslow Panthers on Friday night.

Le-Win (3-2, 3-1 NUIC Northwest) scored first, but the Wildcatz had the answer. EPC (5-0, 4-0) scored the next three touchdowns to take control, with Schaney’s 8-yard run sandwiched between a pair of 31-yard Deven Heeren-to-Skylar Paulson scoring strikes.

After the Panthers cut the deficit to 21-14 on a TD pass in the final 20 seconds of the first half, the Wildcatz again responded. Schaney’s 3-yard TD run with 3:30 left in the third quarter made it a two-score lead again, then his 42-yard scoring scamper with 1:57 left in the game came on the heels of a Panther scoring pass with 4:04 to go and sealed the victory.

67 rushing yards and 66 receiving yards for EPC, and Heeren finished 5-for9 passing for 134 yards.

were overmatched on the road, falling behind 41-7 by halftime in a Big Northern West loss.

James Robinson ran 20 times for 253 yards and five touchdowns, and he added a 31-yard touchdown reception from Kendall Lawson (142 passing yards) as Lutheran (4-1, 2-1) bounced back from last week’s loss to Winnebago.
