Small picture still in focus for Dukes S

o their playoff dreams were dashed by an Ottawa explosion on Senior Night at A.C. Bowers Field.

Don’t think for 1 minute that’s going to stop the Dixon Dukes from trying to finish the season strong.

After heading into the locker room trailing by 42 points at halftime Friday night, Dixon outscored the Pirates 21-7 after the break, and ran their offense as well as they wanted to run it from the get-go.

The Dukes ran for 127 yards and three touchdowns in the second half, and despite the clock counting down against them the whole time, nearly made it very interesting when they recovered an Ottawa fumble at midfield.

This was right after Dixon turned a Pirates’ fumble into a short touchdown drive to get within 49-21 with 8:27 to go.

ROCK FALLS – Jacob Mammosser reached his milestone, but that’s not what he really wanted.

The Rock Falls junior quarterback passed for 275 yards and eclipsed 5,000 yards in his career, but an early four-touchdown deficit was too much to overcome for the Rockets in a 57-34 Big Northern West loss to Mendota on Friday night at Hinders Field.

“It’s a lot of yards, but it doesn’t really matter how many yards I throw for,” said Mammosser, who ran for three touchdowns and passed for one.

“I could throw for a thousand yards in a game, but I’d rather have the win. It’s cool to have that, but it’s not like I’m going to go celebrate.”

The Rockets (1-6, 0-5) found themselves down 28-0 less than 8 minutes into the game.

Rock Falls outscored Mendota (3-4, 1-3) the rest of the way, but it was far too little, far too late.

The Trojans were led by Wyatt Martinson, who had 24 carries for 246 yards and four touchdowns. He went for 205 in the

Mendota outgained Rock Falls 522-333. The Trojans ran for 427 yards.

“We got down real fast, but I’m proud of our team. We battled back,” Mammosser said.

“That large of a deficit is tough to overcome.”

The Rockets got on the scoreboard with its defense delivering a safety after a booming

53-yard punt by Daegan Wharff to the Mendota 1. On Mendota’s first play, Rock Falls’ defense smothered Trojans fullback Jimmy Bruno behind the goal line. The play made it 28-2 with 2:30 left in the first quarter.

On its ensuing possession, Rock Falls scored its first touchdown. A 40-yard pass from Mammosser to Connor Cain (7 catches, 82 yards) on fourth-

and-17 set up a 5-yard TD run

by Mammosser. That made it 28-8 with 5 seconds left in the opening quarter.

Mendota followed up a 28-point first quarter with a 22-point second quarter to reach the half-century mark.

on fourth-and-9. Mammosser also hit Cain for 17 yards. Two plays later, Mammosser went the final yard then added the two-point conversion, making it 36-16 with 7:33 left in the half.

After Mendota made it 50-16, Donoho busted an 89-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, making it 50-22 with 1:35 until intermission.

“I just saw a hole and hit it, and it turned out for a score,” said Donoho, who also had nine catches for 74 yards. The return TD was his first. “It felt good, but it’s more about the team. I’m still not happy.”

The Rockets drove 67 yards for a TD with 6:36 left in the third quarter. Mammosser had a 24-yard pass to Brendon LeBarron to start the march that ended with a 16-yard Mammosser run.

Rock Falls scored the game’s final points with 6:18 to play. It moved 56 yards. LeBarron had an 18-yard run and Mammosser hit Donoho for 10 yards on fourthand-10. Mammosser hit Wharff from 3 yards out for the score.

DIXON – The deficit was as shocking as it was swift. But that didn’t deter the Dixon Dukes from a strong secondhalf effort Friday night at A.C. Bowers Field.

After the Ottawa Pirates scored on five of their first six possessions in their NIB-12 West contest, plus a pick-six, the Dukes’ offense finally got on track after halftime. But with the running clock, a six-score comeback wasn’t in the cards in a 49-21 loss.

“We just turned the scoreboard off in our heads,” Dixon quarterback JD Gieson said, “and just focused on running our offense and executing the way we should have been from the start.”

The Dukes (2-5, 1-2) saw their playoff hopes die on Senior Night, but the second half sure didn’t show any of them giving up. Dixon gained 130 of their 204 total yards in the second half, including a pair of touchdown runs by Gieson and another by Quinton Douglas.

On the other hand, Ottawa (2-5, 2-1) struck early and often.

The Pirates amassed 250 of their 331 total yards in the first half, and added another 65 yards on Chase Hill’s interception return TD on Dixon’s ensuing possession after the first

score. Ottawa had 185 yards on the ground and 146 through the air, had 14 of their 17 first downs before the break, and only punted twice in the game.

Trailing 42-0 at halftime, the Dukes battled the continuous clock and the Pirates’ reserves in the second half, but still left the field with a little better taste in their mouths. Gieson had 79 yards rushing, including TD runs of 5 and 13 yards, and Dixon turned an Ottawa fumble into a two-play, 13-yard scoring drive capped by Douglas’ 7-yard TD run.

But the Dukes couldn’t capitalize on another Ottawa fumble at midfield, and the Pirates got one final first down to finish off the win.

“We’ve got to defend better than we did tonight, but it’s a lesson learned,” said Dixon junior Cody Mighell, who ran for 73 yards. “We kept our heads up, didn’t let the score affect us, and kept battling until the end.”

Sterling started with a pick-six 14 seconds into the game, and things didn’t improve much from there on the way to a 38-19 loss to the Maple Leafs at Bob Reade Field. The bus breakdown happened near Morrison, and resulted in only about a 20-minute delay, but not much went right for the Warriors upon their arrival in Geneseo.

The Maple Leafs led 38-6 after opening the second half with a touchdown, and were never in much danger. Turnovers on Sterling’s first two possessions led directly to 10 Geneseo points, and the Golden Warriors finished with four turnovers overall.

“You can’t turn the ball over against teams like that,” Sterling coach Jon Schlemmer said. “We turned the ball over too many times tonight, and we didn’t get off the field when we needed a good play defensively.”

Geneseo (6-1, 3-0 NIB-12 West) put the game on ice by scoring three straight times in the second quarter, on TD runs of 28 yards by Ryan Webster and 66 yards from Lane Akre, then a diving 13-yard TD reception by Drew Himmel-

man just before halftime.

Akre finished the game with 20 carries for 190 yards – gaudy statistics for a player who entered the game with four carries for 17 yards. He took over at fullback when starter Brandon Mizlo suffered a sprained ankle on Geneseo’s first play.

“It was unfortunate for [Brandon] to get hurt, but I was glad to get the opportunity to go in and help my team out,” Akre said. “My offensive line was awesome, and also the blocking backs. I don’t think we missed a single block tonight.”

A bright spot for the Golden Warriors (3-4, 1-2) was the return of Wharff, who had missed three games due to a team rules violation. He caught five passes for 104 yards, and also scored on a short run.

“It was great being out there with my teammates,” Wharff said.

“Sitting out, there isn’t any worse feeling than watching my teammates play. We did some good things out there tonight, but we have to eliminate the bad things.”

Sterling had defeated Geneseo three consecutive times, but now the Maple Leafs have a clear path toward a league title and favorable playoff seed.

They play at Streator and LaSalle-Peru the next 2 weeks.

“Anytime you win a rivalry game against an opponent that quite honestly we’ve had trouble with, it’s a big win,” Geneseo coach Larry Johnsen Jr. said. “We want to be conference champs, and we knew this would be a big game.”

ERIE – On a night full of offense, it was a defensive play that turned the tide.

Newman trailed Erie-Prophetstown 30-13 with 1:46 left in the first half when Panthers quarterback Ethan Howard was picked off by Dillan Heffelfinger. The junior took the interception 25 yards for a touchdown, making the score 30-21 in favor of the Panthers after a 2-point conversion.

After the 54-38 Newman win Friday night, it was that interception that Comets head coach Mike Papoccia credited as the crucial play for his team. “That pick was a big momentum changer,� he said. “It was a godsend for us, because we weren’t playing very good defensively. And that was the big spark, I guess you could say, that we really needed to get back in the game. And from there on, the kids started believing more.�

He said he was among the Newman players worried that a 30-7 Erie-Prophetstown lead with 3:25 left in the first half could spiral out of control. “In the beginning, I’m not going to lie, I was one of the ones that was worried and scared,� Snow said. “Being down 30-7, we don’t see that too often. It’s an eye-

opener when that happens. We were being really laggy on the sidelines, and once that touchdown and interception – pick-6 – happened, our sideline started getting into it.�

He added a 64-yard TD in the second half to end the game with 156 yards on nine carries. “We had good momentum coming in,� Williams said. “This was obviously a big game for us.

They got the momentum rolling and it was just hard to stop them once they got it going, but

we did what we could do.�

In a game with 915 combined rushing yards, there were nine runs or more than 15 yards, and touchdown runs from 68, 69, 64, 17 and 74 yards. There were only eight passes thrown the entire game, and three were caught for a combined 68 yards.

Two of those completions belonged to the Comets, who also added a second pick-6 with 9:49 left in the game. This one was from Trevor Bolin, whose score capped a 20-point swing to put Newman up 48-38.

Brady Rude added a 74-yard touchdown run to cap the scoring with 2:05 left in the game.

The benefit of such a wild game, Papoccia said, was added confidence. “The kids know that they can come back from just about anything,� he said. “We were very close to being buried there.

We got a couple interceptions for touchdowns and that just changed the complexion of the whole game. “I just give our kids credit.

They were where they were supposed to be and did what they were supposed to do and played with a lot of heart, in the second half especially.�

WINNEBAGO – For Oregon to have a chance in its game against Winnebago, the No. 6 team in 3A, a few breaks would have to go its way.

That did not happen, and the unbeaten Indians cruised to an easy 28-7 win on Friday night.

Oregon’s (3-4, 1-3) best opportunity came late in the second quarter after a fumble recovery by Cody Flanagan. Taking over at midfield and trailing 14-0, the Hawks marched to the Winnebago 10-yardline, the key play being a Tyler Blume 10-yard pass to Pierce Dhaese on fourth down.

Two plays later, though, a holding penalty created a passing situation for the Hawks.

On a poorly executed play between receiver and quarterback, Blume was intercepted

by Ryan Swigart.

Taking over at its own 34-yard line with less than 1 minute left in the half, Swigart led Winnebago on a 4-play scoring drive. A 39-yard screen pass to Michael Pate made it 21-0. “I don’t think we played real

well at first,� Oregon coach John Bothe said. “We needed to execute better.�

On Winnebago’s previous touchdown, it was a 63-yard pass from Swigart to Zach Thoren. The first scoring drive was all on the ground, capped off by a Sean Ward 2-yard plunge. “They’re a better team than us, but we backed off physically,� Bothe said.

The Hawks put together their most impressive drive of the game right after halftime.

Facing a third-and long deep in its own territory, Oregon surprised the Indians with the counter, and Chris Jordan ran 17 yards for a first down.

Nick Newman, who led Oregon with 68 yards rushing, then

went for 10 yards, and Sawyer Reynolds followed up with a 13-yard run.

The drive stalled, as the Indian defense stiffened. Any chance of the Hawks getting back into the contest ended early in the fourth quarter after Swigart hooked up with Isaiah Yanni on a touchdown pass, making it 28-0.

Oregon nearly matched Winnebago (189-203 yards) on the ground, but lacked the big-play capability of the Indians and struggled in the passing game. “The critical plays went to Winnebago� Bothe said.

Garrett Rude prevented Oregon from being shut out for the first time since the 2011 game against Harvard by running for a 3-yard yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

Besides the first-half fumble recovery, Oregon’s defense was aided by a quarterback sack by Travis Burke, which helped stop a Winnebago drive.

Needing to win the next two games to make the playoffs, Oregon returns home to face Mendota, a team that led Winnebago 33-27 in the fourth quarter before losing 34-33.

MANLIUS – Parker Neuhalfen might have had a career night offensively against Amboy on Friday, but it was a play he made on defense that might have been his biggest moment of the night.

With the Clippers driving and trying to force overtime, Neuhalfen intercepted a Liam Ohlendorf pass intended for Damon Quest in the end zone with 1:22 remaining to secure a 36-28 victory for Bureau Valley in a Three Rivers North game in Manlius.

Two plays earlier, Neuhalfen was beaten by Quest for a 33-yard reception that set Amboy up at the BV 24-yard line and put the momentum on the Clippers’ side. “We had to make a play, and one of our playmakers made a play,�

Bureau Valley coach Jeff Ohlson said. “We had two turnovers that were costly. We had a fumble at the goal line and then another at midfield, and it felt like the breaks weren’t going our way. We had a break go our way at the end.�

The interception was Neuhalfen’s second of the game. He also led all rushers with 236 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries in

a must-win game for the Storm (3-4, 2-2), who must continue to win to qualify for the playoffs. “We told the kids 2 weeks ago, we have to get back to doing Parker Neuhalfen the things we’ve done, and that’s BV being physical on junior the offensive line and defensive line,� Ohlson said. “They’ve bought into it, and these guys keep fighting.�

Overshadowed by Neuhalfen’s big night was Tommy Johnston, who rushed for 136 yards on 16 attempts. He had the Storm’s first two scores, a 7-yard run and a 45-yard run, both in the first quarter.

Amboy got within 14-12 following a 1-yard dive by Chris Jones with 5:09 remaining in the first half, but BV put two big scores on the board before the half ended that Clipper coach Gary Jones called a “back-breaker�.

Neuhalfen had both touchdown runs, the first from 40 yards, and the second with 51 seconds remaining on an 88-yard scramble.

“Those big plays late in the first half got to us,� said Jones. “[Neuhalfen] got loose on a couple of scrambles. He’s quick.� “There was some cutback lanes, and he sees things real well,�

Ohlson said. “It’s one of those things where we just let him play.

Early in the season, we may have coached him up too much. We’ve let him just play since midseason, and he’s really taken off.�

After Amboy cut the lead to 29-20 following Jason Bontz’s second touchdown run of the game, the Storm cushioned their lead back to 36-20 when Neuhalfen converted a critical fourth-and-6 for a 15-yard score. It was the second fourth-down conversion of the drive for the Storm.

But Amboy wouldn’t go away quietly, and following a 30-yard run by Bontz (32 carries, 206 yards), Ohlendorf hit Ryan Leffelman down the middle of the field for a 21-yard touchdown pass to get within one score with 4:16 left. “We could have laid down and died pretty easy in the second half,� Jones said. “I told them they played a good second half of football.�

Missiles upset Aquin -ILLEDGEVILLE KNOCKS OFF STATE RANKED "ULLDOGS IN &REEPORT

A strong ground game, some key passing, and a few breaks helped the Milledgeville Missiles pull the upset of the season Friday night, as they defeated the Aquin Bulldogs 30-26 in Freeport.

Daniel Walker ran for 193 yards and two touchdowns, and led the defense with eight tackles (seven solo) as the Missiles (2-5, 2-4 NUIC Upstate) jumped out to a 22-0 halftime lead and hung on for the win.

Milledgeville ran for 309 yards, with Jordan Harris adding 38 rushing yards and a TD and 89 passing yards and a scoring strike to Kolton Morgan.

“We ran the football pretty well, something we haven’t been able to do, really, all year,” Milledgeville coach Jason Wroble said. “We didn’t pass for a lot, but we had some key passes when we needed them.

“And, we got a little lucky. Our defense was good, and Aquin had a couple of scores taken off the board with penalties. We made the plays to win the game, and they couldn’t.”

Walker scored 14 seconds into the game, then added a second scoring scamper at the 6-minute mark of the first half. Harris’ TD run 5:10 before halftime made it 22-0 at the break.

Aiden Chang passed for 180 yards and four touchdowns, and his 2-yard strike with 5:20 to play pulled Aquin (5-2, 5-2) within 22-20.

But Harris answered with his TD pass to Morgan with 3:20 to play, and the Missiles held on after Chang’s final scoring strike with 1:34 remaining.

“This is a big win for us, a real stepping stone,” Wroble said. “These seniors, who have worked their butts off the last few lean years but still stuck with it, they earned and deserved this one tonight. Hopefully, this is a big confidence boost for the rest of this season, and we can pick up where we leave off next year.”

Fulton 57, Riverdale 6: Devin Kuehl scored three touchdowns and Ethan Jones accounted for three to lead the Steamers to the lopsided Three Rivers North home win over the Rams.

Kuehl had TD runs of 55 and 10 yards, and had a 21-yard TD reception from Jones, who also had a 59-yard TD toss to Jason Osborn and a 30-yard pick-six.

Austin Regenwether had 2 and 1-yard TD runs, and Jack Lemke added a 19-yard TD run.

Rockridge 41, Morrison 7: The Mustangs fell behind 41-0 to the

state-ranked Rockets in the Three Rivers crossover matchup at Morrison.

Rockridge rushed for 242 yards and outgained the Mustangs 358-140. Morrison’s only TD was Andy Bird’s 5-yard run with 4:05 to play.

Eastland-Pearl City 61, Durand 6: The Wildcatz led 34-0 after one

quarter and romped to the NUIC Northwest win on homecoming at Pearl City.

Eric Schaney rushed for 157 yards and Shawn Larak 90 for EPC. Deven Heeren was 6-for-6 for 139 yards and four touchdowns. Donny Groezinger had four catches for 96 yards and rushed for 64 yards.

The Wildcatz limited Durand to three first downs and 81 yards.

Polo 42, Orangeville 6: The Marcos (3-4, 3-3 NUIC Upstate) blew out the Broncos at home, keeping their playoff hopes alive.

East Dubuque 43, AFC 6: The Raiders hung tough for a half before the Warriors scored 22 points in the third quarter to put the NUIC Upstate win away in East Dubuque.
