Change coming as IHSA celebrates 40 years of playoffs

T

he IHSA playoffs kick off this weekend for the 40th time, and there are plenty of local stories with plenty of intrigue. This section celebrates those teams, and breaks down their first-round games.

Probably no other addition to Illinois high school sports has forever changed things like the IHSA football playoffs.

It’s like a giant earthquake happened in 1974, and since then, the high school sports landscape has shifted with every aftershock that followed.

school to make the playoffs in football.

Every argument about a level playing field between public and private schools starts and ends with a discussion about who wins the most in the football playoffs.

The current eight-class

system has been in place since 2001, and during that time there has been an ever-evolving multiplier system for nonboundaried schools.

Is the system perfect?

No. There are folks out there who realize that, and on Tuesday, a list of proposals were distributed by the IHSA. Included in that list was the motion to separate public and private schools in the postseason.

So all the public schools in the area that don’t like meeting Newman in playoffs, wouldn’t have to worry about it.

Two of my favorite memories in my 10 years

at SVM were the quarterfinal games between Morrison and Newman in 2010 and 2011. Newman won in 2010, and Morrison won in 2011.

I wish both games had happened in Champaign, because in each case the two teams were clearly the best two teams in the class in those seasons.

But I’ll never be convinced that eliminating the possibility for such games is good for high school sports.

I realize there are larger private schools that have widened the gap between their publicschool peers.

I don’t have an answer

for making that fair, but after being out of high school for 14 years, I realize that not much in life is fair.

And that’s a lesson – something to be learned, which is ultimately the purpose of high school sports, not winning state titles.

There are other proposals, including the dissolving of conferences in football in favor of a regional scheduling format. Essentially, each school would be aligned into geographic-based regions of teams of the same class.

The top four teams in each region would make the playoffs.

This is an interesting proposal, and would eliminate the conference-hopping of the last decade.

But it wouldn’t be perfect.

And that’s the thing with all these changes.

Yes, you might eliminate some of the old flaws, but it’s likely you’ll just end up with a batch of new ones.

I look at the list of state champions below, and I see several local teams with trophies over the last 40 years.

This could be the last year of the system working this way, and I am not sold on the idea of that being a good thing.

One thing in Sterling’s favor heading into its Class 5A firstround game at Burlington Central will be having a full complement of players.

A week ago in a 21-18 loss at Sycamore, placekicker Tony Diaz was helping the Sterling soccer team roll to a Freeport Regional championship. The Golden Warriors went for two points after each of their three touchdowns, and came up empty each time.

“Tony has done a great job for us all season,” Sterling coach Jon Schlemmer said, “but we knew we could be without him because of soccer. It was my decision to go for two points, and we just need to

behind Johnsburg. The Skyhawks won a showdown for the league title in Week 8 by a 7-0 score.

The Rockets have a rich playoff history, with 16 appearances in the past 29 seasons. Four of those playoff seasons came with current Dixon coach Dave Smith at the helm. He went 50-22 in seven seasons on the job, including a trip to the 4A quarterfinals in 2003.

Burlington Central started its season with losses to Hampshire and Dixon, but then nearly ran the table the rest of the way.

“They’re a good ball club,” Sterling coach Jon Schlemmer said. “They run the ball effectively, and they’ve been really good on defense as well. It’s going to be a good challenge for our team.”

Staying on task key for Dukes Dixon zeroed in on physical Rockets squad

Playoff fever has hit Dixon hard, and it will be up to the Dukes to come up with the remedy.

As excited as the community is, the Dixon football players knows they can’t get caught up in all the hubbub. After all, there’s still a game to be played this weekend.

“We talked in practice Monday about not getting ahead of ourselves and not letting the hype get to us,” Dixon coach Dave Smith said. “This is a big deal for the city of Dixon, and we want to make it last as long as possible.”

the Class 5A quarterfinals.

This year, Dixon (7-2) hosts the Richmond-Burton Rockets in a 4A first-round game Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Rockets (6-3) placed third in the Big Northern East, the other half of the Dukes’ new conference.

They boast a physical runheavy attack, led by senior Brad Boelkow (116 rushes, 927 yards, 15 TDs).

Despite losing its second-

leading rusher, Luke Brinkmann (71 rushes, 660 yards, 8 TDs) to a shoulder injury in Week 6, Richmond-Burton won its final two games to qualify for the playoffs; the Rockets’ 37 playoff points would not have been enough had they finished 5-4.

“They’re going to come after us, pound the ball right at us and be tough defensively,” Smith said.

“The playoffs are singlegame elimination if you lose, so we have to stay focused, play within ourselves, and be really ready to go both mentally and physically on Saturday.”

The Dukes’ rely on a physical yet athletic defense, and a balanced offense that can feature either the pass or the run, and do so with equal effectiveness.

Amboy will have history on its side when it takes on Eastland-Pearl City in a Class 2A first-round playoff game on Saturday in Lanark.

How that will help the Clippers (5-4) in their quest to upset the Wildcatz (9-0) remains to be seen.

Amboy has faced Eastland twice in the playoffs before, and came out on top both times. The Clippers won a 31-22 decision in 2000, and gained a 28-20 victory in 2003.

Three Rivers teams have given Eastland fits over the years. The Wildcatz are 1-7 in their playoff history, with three losses to Morrison, two to Newman, and two to Amboy. EPC’s lone

Wildcatz coach Randy Asche used the terms “apprehensive” and “nervewracking” when asked about drawing a Three Rivers team right out of the gate.

“Obviously we haven’t had much success against those teams,” Asche said, “and that’s because it’s

a great league. Our best teams would probably go 6-3 or 5-4 against that competition. That’s not to say we don’t have great teams in our conference, because we do, but they have bigger schools with some great programs.”

The Clippers got off to a 5-1 start, but have stumbled into the playoffs with losses to Fulton, Bureau Valley, and Newman the last 3 weeks by a combined score of 104-25.

“We haven’t played our best football the last 3 weeks,” Amboy coach Gary Jones said, “but right now, everybody is 0-0. It’s a fresh start, and we need to get back to playing the way we did the first half of the season.”
