From the LCCOA Executive Director

Post House Community Center is only one of several changes we hope to have over the next months as we move through these years when the role – and identity – of “seniors” is changing. Would you like to be a part of it?

This is the time of year when LCCOA is looking for some good people to serve on our Board

of Directors. Elections are held each year in September, but now is the time we are looking for candidates. If you are interested, or know of someone you think we should talk to, please look for the article later in this issue for details on how to become involved.

And, speaking of involvement, there are many ways to help your Community Center besides being a Board member. We are always looking for volunteers to help us with our programming, etc. Do you have a skill you would like to teach or participate in with others? Can you give a few hours a week to help out at our front desk answering phones?

our list of people to call when we need general help? Let us know by calling 288-9236 and volunteering your name and contact information.

Next month is our big, first annual Petunia City Brass Drum and Bugle Corps show, run in conjunction with the Arc of Lee County. I hope you are as excited about this as I am. We are continuing the great Drum Corps tradition in Dixon by bringing in some of the finest Open Class drum corps in the world. The famed Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets are making their first appearance in Dixon, and we also have the oldest North American corps, the Racine Scouts and the world’s oldest drum corps, Jubal,

from the Netherlands, who are celebrating 104 years! Our beautiful Post House is the same age so this show brings together two great traditions!

By Geoff Vanderlin “When do I become a “Senior?” “How old do I have to be to come there?” “I’d like to see this program but I’m not old enough yet.”

We hear these and other similar things on a daily basis. So what is the answer? Easy. There are no age restrictions to belong to, or participate in the programs offered by the Lee County Council on Aging! (Remember, we are ALL aging, even if we don’t always want to admit it.). Sure, there

are certain government programs we have information on that have age limits (Medicare, anyone?) but the most basic answer is that we want to see everyone here. And to drive that point home, I want to let you know that, from now on, the Dixon Senior Center will be known as the Post House Community Center! The name more accurately reflects the fact that we serve the entire community. Come in and help us celebrate.

By Doug Vandersee Summertime is here and everything is looking nice and green. It is hard to believe the weather has been so cool in the evening but the cool weather and extra rain has sure helped the flowers and grass grow.

I know I am already tired of mowing twice a week but it is great to see everything growing throughout the neighborhood. Please be careful when operating your power tools and don’t over-exert yourself while taking care of your gar-

den and lawn.

It has been a very busy spring so it is great to have some time to slow down and enjoy life!

Make sure to take some time to schedule a few trips to check out some areas you haven’t ever seen or haven’t seen in some time. Come and join us on Wednesday, June 10, as we take a scenic bus trip to Peoria to check out the beautiful riverfront and tour the Caterpillar Visitor’s Center. How does Medicare cover hospice?

Dear Marci, My mother has several serious health complications, and her condition has deteriorated in the past few weeks.

Her doctor has diagnosed her as terminally ill and recommended that we consider transitioning her to hospice care, but I am concerned about the costs and coverage.

How does Medicare cover hospice care and what are the costs?

– William (Trenton, NJ) Dear William, Medicare covers hospice care if you meet certain criteria. Hospice care is comprehensive care for people who are terminally ill that includes pain management, counseling, respite care, prescription drugs, inpatient and outpatient care, and services for the terminally ill person’s family.

In order to qualify for the hospice benefit, you must meet the following criteria: • You have Medicare Part A. • The hospice medical director (and your doctor, if you have one) must certify that you have a terminal illness,

meaning that your life expectancy is 6 months or less.

• You sign a statement electing to have Medicare pay for palliative care, such as pain management, rather than care to try to cure your condition.

• Your terminal condition is documented in your medical record.

• You receive care from a Medicare-certified hospice agency.

If you are considering hospice care, speak with your doctor about finding a Medicare-certified hospice agency. The

hospice medical director and your doctor will certify your eligibility. You must sign a statement electing hospice care and waiving curative treatments for your terminal illness. The hospice team of providers must consult with you to develop a plan of care. The team includes a hospice doctor, a registered nurse, a social worker and a counselor.

Hospice can be provided in the home or in an inpatient facility; you do not have to be homebound to qualify for the hospice benefit.

The hospice benefit covers the following services related to your terminal condition: • Nursing services • Skilled therapy services • Home health aide services • Durable medical equipment and medical supplies • Short-term inpatient care to give relief to your caregivers • Short term inpatient care to manage symptoms and control pain • Medical social services • Some prescription drugs

• Spiritual or religious counseling care • Nutrition and dietary counseling The hospice benefit is always covered under Original Medicare. Even if you have a Medicare Advantage plan, Original Medicare Part A will cover your hospice care.

Your Medicare Advantage plan will continue to pay for your care that is unrelated to your terminal condition.

Original Medicare covers most costs associated with hospice care.

You will be responsible for paying up to $5 for

outpatient prescription drugs covered through the hospice benefit (prescription drugs related to pain relief and symptom control). You also will pay a co-pay of no more than 5 percent of the Medicare approved amount for each day of inpatient respite care.

While you have hospice, you can still get Medicare coverage for treatment of all illnesses and injuries unrelated to your terminal condition.

However, the costs you usually pay for services will apply.

Medicare will cover the hospice benefit as long as you continue to qualify for hospice care. If you receive 180 days of hospice care, you must have a face-to-face meeting with a hospice doctor or nurse practitioner to confirm that you still qualify for hospice care.

You also can end hospice care at any time and elect to receive curative treatments for an illness.

Dixon Senior Center becomes Post House Community Center

After considering how the Lee County Council on Aging’s mission is to assist finding services for seniors and people with disabilities, and for community activities as well as senior activities, the Board has approved a new name for the building.

Everyone knows this building as the old post office – and many of the

We currently provide a number of information and assistance services, activities, special programs, trips, personalized services, and transportation.

We are asking for your input on what you think is needed for our growing 60-and-over and disabled population during the next 5 years.

Lee County Council on Aging seeks volunteers to serve on board The Lee County Council on Aging is seeking volunteers from Lee County to be members of its Board of Directors.

The Board represents all communities within Lee County, and we especially need members from communities outside of Dixon.

Board meetings are held every month on the third Monday, beginning at 3 p.m and lasting 1 to 2 hours. Responsibilities include attendance at monthly board meetings, serving on one or more committees, and a willingness to contribute to and participate in Agency, social and fundraising activities.

With this in mind, the Board has approved changing the name of the Dixon Senior Center to Post House Community Center.

This action did not come easily nor quickly; the Board has been considering this for a while, and the staff for even longer.

The motivation behind changing the name is to convey to the community that our building is not just for senior services – it is for community activities as well.

The best way to remember it is this: The Lee

County Council on Aging is the organization that helps seniors and disabled people find services, while the Post House Community Center is the building where activities are held; this is also the lower level of the Post House Ballroom, whose name will remain the same.

Look for the change in signage soon!

You can help drum up some funds for Lee County groups Tickets are on sale now for Lee County Council on Aging and the Arc of Lee County’s fundraising concert, Petunia Festival Brass, which will be held July 24 – and that date will be here before you know it.

Presenting Sponsor Sauk Valley Bank and our organizations will be bringing six great drum corps and bands to Dixon High School for a night you won’t forget.

The Santa Clara, California, Vanguard Cadets finished the 2014 season as the number-two corps in the world in Open Class, and have won several world championships.

Genesis, from Austin, Texas, which gave a great show at last year’s Petunia Festival and later finished third in the world, will also perform, as will the Colt Cadets from Dubuque, which placed 10th in 2014, and the Racine Scouts, North America’s oldest drum corps organization.

But the Scouts won’t be the oldest

unit performing. That honor goes to special guests Jubal, from Dordrecht, in the Netherlands, which is the world’s oldest corps. It was founded in 1911, making them 104 years old.

Finally, another special guest will be Shadow Armada, from Oregon, Wisconsin. Shadow Armada is a drum corps-style band, which means members will perform the same type of show, using not only drums and horns, but other traditional marching band instruments as well. Shadow Armada competed in the MidAmerica Competitive Band Directors Association tour every summer and won that organization’s championship in 2013.

Tickets for Petunia City Brass are available at the Post House Community Center, Kreider Services, and Veniers Jewelers, as well as online at www.dci.org. Proceeds from the evening will be divided between Lee County Council on Aging and the Arc of Lee County. For more information, call us at 288-9236.

Hello, everyone, we are almost through with the rainy season and ready for the weather we anticipate every year: summer!

Our flowers are blooming, and gardens have started. Lord willing, our kitchen and customers

will have an abundance of various produce for us to cook, and for all of you to enjoy.

A day on the links will help LCCOA Triad safety series a success The Whiteside County Triad held its first major event on May 5.

The three triangles symbolize a working relationship among members of law enforcement, older adults, and the community joining together to provide programs to help older adults with their safety.

Topics included power of attorneys, keeping yourself and your home safe, popular scams, managing your loved one’s finances, preventing financial exploitation, and Illinois POLST (Practitioner Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment), and DNR (do not resuscitate) forms.

Lee County Council on Aging (LCCOA) has arranged a golf outing at the Emerald Hills Golf Course on Saturday, July 25.

This outing will be a four-person scramble, giving everyone – from the near-zero handicap to the ultimate duffer – a chance to go out and enjoy a beautiful day of golf while supporting a great agency.

Wishing you a happy spring from The Emporium Thrift Center! We are looking like spring inside the store, with summer clothing and lots of flowers, flower pots, birdhouses and garden items.

We had a customer ask if we carried vintage items. I thought, “Vintage, what exactly does that mean?” Looking it up I found it is a generic term for items originating from a previous era.

Oh yes, we have vintage.

Some of the items that come to mind are buttons, doilies, dresser scarfs, advertising pins, ash trays and beer openers. Right now we have a beautiful set of Fire King dishes. For those who have a kitchen with a

You may bring all your things at once. We are very blessed to have lots of storage in our basement. If you bring winter

clothing in the summer, we just put it away until the right season. Bring in that Christmas stuff you’re not going to use any more and we will save it until Christmas time.

Just park in front of the store and let us know you have a donation and we will help you get it into the store.

Transportation Greyhound will add daily stops in Dixon The long wait is over. Greyhound bus service between Chicago and Davenport, including four daily stops at the Reagan Transit Center in Dixon, will begin June 1. The service, made possible by an Illinois Department of Transportation Intercity bus grant, will have two round trips daily: one from Chicago to Davenport and one from Davenport to Chicago.

Travel will be on specially commissioned buses. The seats will be

leather upholstered and each seat will have plug-ins for your electronic devices. While there will not be restrooms on the buses, there will be a 10-minute rest stop in each direction at the Rochelle truck stop. Watch for more details soon, including ticketing, prices, and opening times at the Transit Center.

This service will run 7 days a week and is guaranteed for a minimum of 2 years.

Laughter Yoga presented by Homebound Healthcare is a gentle, feel-good event for all ages and abilities. It combines unconditional laughter with yogic breathing. Begin with gentle stretching, chanting, clapping and body movement. Next comes the breathing exercise, to prepare the lungs for laughter.
