The rental part of the business caters to the professional and homeowner alike, with a wide range of equipment for both indoor and outdoor projects as well some event items, like canopies, tables and chairs. The retail sales side of the business also has multiple clientele types; Wilco Rental focuses heavily on the homeowner but also serves large property owners,

1954 was the year Wendelin Richter started a humble business called, Richter’s Office Appliance at 416 Locust Street in Sterling. This small business venture of selling and repairing typewriters and small office equipment was the foundation of the SBM you see today. 60 plus years later, SBM Business Equipment Center has grown into a large enterprise located just down the street from its original location to 501 Locust Street. As sons and daughters, Herb Richter and Wendy Richter Johnson, have always been involved in some aspect of the business. We remember stuffing envelopes when it was statement time, or when dad had a big promotion he wanted to inform his customers about. He would bring the envelopes and statements home and we would watch the Ed Sullivan show and prepare the mailing. Herb would go to the store every day after school and sweep the warehouse, empty wastebaskets, and do general upkeep to keep the business neat and organized. In 1981 Wendy left Central National Bank to come work for her father. SBM wanted to expand their locations to Dixon, and Wendy opened the Dixon Branch that year for the Company. After 10 years of successful sales and growth at the Dixon location, Wendy became the President of SBM in preparation of the retirement of Wendelin Richter in 1993. In 1986 Herb joined the company on a full time basis, after his service in the United States Air Force. It was very exciting to have Herb join the company and bring to it his knowledge of computers and technology. Herb Richter, became the Vice President of the Company, and the second generation of family members were in place to maintain the vision of Wendelin Richter In 1975, Rod Johnson joined the company and became the General Manager. His passion is working with customers and staff. To introduce all customers to some new product that just arrived at SBM or to assist in finding and solving their office supply needs. In 2002 Shannon Richter joined the company. Her role is everything from working with customers on the sales floor to helping customers navigate our website, verifying pricing, and inventory for our customers and assisting in

CELEBRATING 65+ YEARS IN BUSINESS!! Schuler Motors, Inc. was started back in June 1949 by Eddie & Pauline Schuler when Eddie opened the dealership Eddie Schuler. We were first located at 229 East Main Street in Morrison. The second location was then 206 West Main Street, where the Fire Station is now located. In the mid 1960’s Eddie and Pauline purchased the land on which we are located now at 727 West Lincolnway. In 1967 he added a 14 bay service shop and a 2 car showroom. Twenty years later

he expanded the showroom to display 10 cars. All eight of Eddie and Pauline’s children (Patricia, Linda, Virginia, Beverly, Eddie Robert, Mary, Sara and Mark) have worked in the family business and contributed greatly to its success. Eddie and Pauline’s son Mark owns and operates Schuler Motors, Inc. today, which celebrated 65 years in business in 2014!! Mark is a graduate of Northwood University in Midland, MI. Mark serves on the Morrison Hospital Board of Directors as the Secretary/ Treasurer and has been a member since 1996. He is also a member of the Morrison Rotary Club. He enjoys antique cars (collecting and restoring), golf, volunteering, and fishing with his sons. He has been married for over 30 years to Susan, and has three children Megan, Zach, and Clayton. Susan owns and operates Lincoln Highway Gifts in Morrison, IL, the area’s largest gift store and is a Registered Nurse, Megan is the Finance Manager & Internet Manager at

SCHULER MOTORS, INC.

Schuler Motors, Zach is employed by the United States Department of Defense and attending graduate school, and Clayton is attending college and works part time at Schuler Motors. Mark has several antique vehicles that previously belonged to his father, the 1914 Dodge and a 1924 Chrysler which you can see in the showroom at Schuler Motors. Both vehicles represent the first year of production in 1914 for the Dodge brand and 1924 for the Chrysler brand. Mark drives the 1924 Chrysler in most of the local area parades. As his father did years ago. In these 65+ years of business our number one priority has been and will always remain customer satisfaction! Douglas g & Frye y Motorsports p

Pictured: Sally and Mark Douglas

1902 North Locust St.,Sterling,IL 815-625 - 4426 www.douglasfryemotorcycle.com

Douglas & Frye Motorsports was started as Douglas Motorcycle Engineering at the bottom of the Ave G bridge in the Bazaar Americana building in 1985, by Mark Douglas with $100 in his pocket. He had worked for Mike Cunningham at Sterling Suzuki/Kawasaki for 11 years as his service manager. When Mike decided to retire, Mark wanted to buy the business, but could not afford it. So he started his own fix it shop and repaired motorcycles, ATV’s and snowmobiles. He was so busy that he hired his now partner Rich Frye, whom he worked with at the Sterling Suzuki. In 1989 they purchased the Polaris franchise and started selling Polaris snowmobiles and ATVS. In 1992 the Locust street building that he had worked in for Mr. Cunningham came up for sale and he purchased it and moved the dealership “back home”. Over the years Douglas & Frye has sold many different vehicles; Polaris Personal watercraft, Royal Enfield, Schwinn Scooter, , and Victory Motorcycles, none of which they still sell. Dawn Beswick was a friend of Mark’s from high school, and she came in a couple times a week to help the guys with office duties. She now works

full time with the parts counter and office operations. Sally came in to the business about 1997 to assist with office operations. Now she does a little bit of everything. Sally’s brother-in-law Mark Stahler started working part time a couple years ago. He sets up new vehicles and also accessorizes new machines as well as helps in sales. Presently they sell Polaris ATVs and Rangers, Honda Motorcycles, ATV’s and Pioneers, Kymco Scooters, ATV’s and S X S. We service all makes and models. We stock a lot of parts and accessories for all makes and models of ATV’s and Motorcycles. What we don’t have, we can usually get in one day. We carry HJC helmets, Castle jackets, Castle Snow gear including helmets, bibs, jackets, boots, gloves and balaclavas. Hours of operation are: Mon. & Fri. 9-6, Tues. Wed. Thurs. 9-5 and Sat. 9-5. The greatest asset to our business is that when you shop at Douglas & Frye, you work with someone that has a lot of time invested in the company. We don’t hire a lot of people and the ones we do, stay.

Nothing could have been better than combining their talents and the dream of owning their own business, than the combination of Richard and Julie Tunk, owners of River’s Edge Inn. River’s Edge Inn is located at 2303 West First Street, in Dixon and is now celebrating over 27 years of serving the Dixon community some of the best food and service. Located on the Rock River, River’s Edge Inn is Dixon’s best kept secret. The Tunk’s took the opportunity to take a closed down, boarded up restaurant, and turn it into a life-long endeavor. Both, Richard and Julie, came from food service backgrounds, with Julie’s parents, Bud and Betty Kavadas, owning the Chuckwagon, and later Julie opening up Mama’s Chuckwagon. Along with their children, the Tunk’s have made River’s Edge Inn, one of Dixon’s best places to dine, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, with an amazing view of the Rock River.

children, Paula began working in the family business in 1997. Over three decades later, the Burkardt’s LP Gas family has grown to include 21 employees, 12 bulk delivery trucks and more than 6500 residential, agricultural and commercial customers in eight counties. Our first year in business we delivered 750,000 gallons of propane. Last year, deliveries had grown to more than 8.7 million gallons. And, although we’ve grown, our focus hasn’t changed from providing friendly, reliable propane service. At 77 years old now, Bill has retired from the propane business, but takes care of business at Edgewood Golf Club, which Bill and Bev have owned for more than 7 years. Bev is the purchasing agent for all the propane sold and delivered by Burkardt’s, most often working seven days a week. 2015 finds Mike recognizing his 30th year at Burkardt’s LP Gas as the General Manager. Mike is also the President of the Illinois Propane Education and Research Council. Paula is the Credit Manager and handles Accounts Payable.

Pictured L-R: Bill and Bev Burkardt, Paula and Mike Faivre On March 16, 1982, Bill and Beverly Burkardt founded Burkardt’s LP Gas to serve the Ogle county/Polo area. As a local, family-owned business, our priority has always been to provide the kind of propane service we would want for our own family. When we started Burkardt’s LP Gas, we were a one-truck operation with just two employees, Bill and Bev. During the first 6 months of being in their own business, Bev also worked at Hazelhurst Elevator as a bookkeeper during the day. Bill and Bev raised four daughters, Pam, Patti, Paula and Penny. In 1985, Paula’s then-boyfriend, Mike Faivre began working at Burkardt’s LP Gas. Mike and Paula were married in 1988 and after having three

Burkardt’s LP Gas is a retail propane gas marketer serving a 45 mile radius of Polo. We deliver propane for residential, agricultural, and commercial uses. Our fleet of 12 bulk delivery trucks allows us to be responsive to our customer’s needs. To continue to improve our service over the years, Burkardt’s LP Gas has three satellite plants in Oregon, Leaf River and Sublette with additional storage of more than a quarter of a million gallons. This additional storage ensures you will always have a secure supply of propane. It helps keep propane prices stable by allowing us to purchase propane in large quantities and store it. Increased storage capacity also reduces transportation costs — all savings that we can pass along to you.

In addition to providing a secure supply of propane at a stable price, Burkardt’s LP Gas takes its commitment to safety and service very seriously. All of our service technicians participate in the Certified Employee Training Program sponsored by the National Propane Gas Association. This valuable safety training helps ensure your gas system is installed correctly for your safety, and that it operates as efficiently as possible. Our service technicians continually update their safety education and training. In addition to delivering propane, Burkardt’s LP Gas has a well trained service team. We sell and install water heaters, radiant heaters, wall and hanging heaters, fireplaces, etc. Our friendly and knowledgeable employees can handle all your propane-related needs. We love visiting with customers and providing you the same level of service we want for our own family. At Burkardt’s LP Gas, we feel it is important to give back to the community that has given us so much. Burkardt’s does this by supporting local churches, schools, fire departments, little leagues, nursing homes, and many other non-profit organizations. In June 2014, Burkardt’s LP Gas added a new PINK delivery truck to our fleet. The PINK truck was designed to honor cancer awareness. Burkardt’s LP Gas will be donating one cent for each gallon of propane delivered by our beautiful, PINK truck to local cancer research.

The Family Business

Vaessen Brothers Chevrolet , Inc. was started in 1926 by Paul & Ralph Vaessen as an autorepair shop. In 1933, the Vaessens obtained the franchise with Chevrolet. In 1953, the dealership expanded. While repairs were still being made at the first location, the new building (currently known as Rt. 52 Roadhouse) consisted of a showroom, office, and a 3 bay service station. By 1976 the dealership was ready for expansion again to where they are currently located. In 1977, Ralph Vaessen retired and his son Neal, joined the business. When Paul retired, Neal and his wife Donna became full owners of the business. Their three sons: Greg (Fixed Operations Manager), Jeff (Parts Manager) and Nick (Sales Manager) have all joined the business. In 1998, the business underwent a remodel in the current building.
