Celebrating Catholic Schools Week is always a special event at St. Anne School, but this year, St. Anne School will have an extra reason for its Catholic Schools Week Celebration. This event will be the beginning of a year honoring the School’s 50 years of offering quality Catholic Education at St. Anne Parish and in the city of Dixon. On August 31st, 1964, St. Anne School opened its doors to students of Grades One to Four, adding a grade in each of the next four years, with the first class graduating in 1968.

There have been many changes at St. Anne over the past 50 years, but one thing that has not changed is the mission of the school. Its staff, together with parents, continue to assist the children to grow spiritually and academically so they are prepared to serve others by sharing their talents and their Faith to make this world a better place for all.

In the early years of the School, this was accomplished with books, paper, pencils and state certified and degreed teachers who used a variety of materials to build the students’ knowledge and prepare them for their future years in high school and beyond.

Today, state certified and degreed teachers continue that tradition, and while books, paper and pencils are still in use, these have been supplemented by computers, IPads and other technology that keep students in step with new means of learning.

In 1964, the Catholic Church was also facing many changes, all in an effort to bring the Faith Life of its members in greater focus with the times. These changes were very important to the children of St. Anne School as they learned many ways to put their Faith Life into practice. This tradition also continues today as students learn how prayer helps them through their day, how their actions make a difference in the lives of others through Food and Toy Drives, donations to Heifer International, and sacrificing to help build homes in Haiti. These lessons are still at the heart of the education given at St. Anne School.

Changes have also brought many extra subjects to St. Anne. Today, students participate in Art, Spanish, Music, PE and Computer Classes.

They also have the opportunity to experience courses in Cooking.

Gardening, Sign Language, Shakespeare, Math Counts, Legos, Puppetry, and an assortment of other classes through a program called Project Discovery. In this way they can use their imagination, mingle with their

classmates of various ages, and possibly explore the beginnings of a future career.

One thing that has not changed or only changed for the better is the support the school receives from many sources. Over these 50 years, the parishioners of St. Anne Parish and its many Pastors, beginning with Father Myles Callahan who built the school to its current Pastor, Father Toni, have all been very supportive of the school and its accomplishments. Today, that support continues along with support from several Corporate Sponsors—The Burkardt Family Foundation, KSB Hospital, Jacobs Builders, Raynor Garage Doors, The John Vaile Financial Group, Farley’s Appliances, the Dixon Knights of Columbus, Ken Nelson Auto Group—as well as several anonymous donors. Parents are among our greatest supporters, both by their payment of tuition, but also by their volunteer work for the school and interaction with the teaching staff.

To kick off our celebration, the school will host a PANCAKE BREAKFAST ON JANUARY 26TH, after and between its Sunday Masses. This event is open to the public as well as to parishioners. Children will also be reading at the weekend Masses and will assist with other parts of the Liturgy. Parishioners who attend evening Masses will be treated to specially baked cookies from the school’s lunch cooks!

A highlight of the week will be the visit of Sean Considine, who will talk with students about the importance of a good education and a life based on Catholic Values Other activities include service to others via a Food Drive and some special surprises for stu-

dents and staff. The week will culminate with St. Anne Students joining the other Catholic Schools of the area at Newman Central Catholic High School for the celebration of the Eucharist with the entire Catholic School Community.

St. Anne will also have its annual auction on Saturday Night, February 1st, with the theme of 50 Golden Years. Pictures from the past 50 years will be on display along with a wonderful group of items for auction, including dessert items, trips, technology and a 50/50 Drawing. Tickets are available at the school and anyone is eligible to purchase these and be a winner!

While St. Anne School may be the “youngest� of the Catholic Schools in the Sauk Valley Area, it is proud of its heritage and looks forward to continued growth as it moves into the future. As its motto proclaims, it is the place “Where Excellence Begins�! Come and visit us, join in our celebration, and be a part of our growing family!

St. Mary’s School CELEBRATES its CENTENNIAL year!!

Dear Residents of the Sterling Community. St. Mary’s began the school year celebrating 100 years of quality religious and academic education to the families of the Sauk Valley. Two days of festivities were held on September 8th and 9th.

Mass was celebrated on September 8th along with a school breakfast and open house. On September 9th, a rededication ceremony was held. Pastors, dignitaries, area principals, former priests, former students, teachers, parishoners, parents and students were in attendance. Father James R. Keenan rededicated the school, thoughts were shared by former students and teachers, the children performed for the attendees and everyone enjoyed cake and punch following the rededication.

St. Mary’s School is proud of its past and looks forward to the next 100 years.

What is different about our Catholic Schools? We have a unique opportunity to help parents develop morals and values that the students will carry with them throughout their lifetime. It is our responsibility to develop students spiritually, academically, physically, emotionally, and socially. One of the goals at St. Mary’s is to instill in the children the qualities needed to be active, faithful members of the church community and be productive citizens in this great country.

Along with quality religious and academic education, students may choose from many extra-curricular activities to participate in. There are clubs such as Leo Club, Math Counts, Math Club and Scholastic Bowl. There are sports that include volleyball, basketball, cross country, track, wrestling and football.

May all of the alumni and friends of St. Mary’s School join us in celebration and support with their prayers and good works on behalf of the school. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

This year’s theme for Catholic Schools Week is “Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.� Students at St. Mary’s participate in many service projects.

Students bring in pennies for P.T. Penguin and collect food for St. Vincent DePaul and the food bank. This year the students participated in a serve-a-thon. Students prepared breakfast at a local church, cleaned several cemeteries made blankets for Gianna House and visited area nursing homes. At Christmas, each family filled a shoe box with various items, wrapped it and sent it to school. The school collected over 100 boxes which were distributed to the residents of Sterling Pavilion.

We are busy at St. Mary’s teaching the children the importance of faith, knowledge, and service. St. Mary’s School is thankful for the support of Father Keenan and Father Bruce. They share their faith with us at weekly Mass and classroom visits. We are thankful to the parishoners of St. Mary’s and Sacred Heart for their support of St. Mary’s School. Thank you to the dedicated staff and parents of the school. We are a family growing together in faith, knowledge, and service.

The philosophy of St. Andrew School is based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. Our school teaches to the whole person emphasizing faith, academics, and service.
