who attended the second annual Petunia City Brass Drum and Bugle Corps show. By doing so, you not only heard and saw a wonderful show, but also helped out LCCOA and our friends at the Kreider Alliance. This was a very successful fundraiser for us both. And how about our first “Bunco in the Ballroom” event? This new activity drew a large and enthusiastic crowd

and they had a great time.

Proceeds, once again, benefitted our programming here at LCCOA. Thanks again to everyone who supports us!

Last month, I used this column to explain some of how we are funded here at LCCOA. This month, I thought I might highlight some of those services and the like that are more of our “hidden gems” that not everyone is aware of. For example, have you ever needed to have something notarized but didn’t know where to find a Notary? Patty is here from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday and is a fully licensed Notary Public. We provide Notary service for free. Similarly, the Post House Commu-

nity Center is also a place where you can have documents faxed or copied.

We do charge a small fee for these services, but are happy to provide them and are a convenient place downtown where you can get it done.

Did you know that we sell greeting cards? We have cards for a wide variety of occasions and sell them for only 25 cents each. We can do this because they are donated to us to sell.

If you have any cards that you care to donate, please bring them in. The same goes for our ongoing book sale. We have books and, more recently DVDs for sale in our dining room.

Come in and make your selection and check out with a great price. Hard back books are only $1,

and paperbacks are 50 cents. If you buy two, you can take a third one absolutely free. And our DVDs are only $1 each.

Lastly, I want to highlight our computer lab. We have 10 public computers that are available for use from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.. They are available for document creation, research, browsing the Internet or almost anything you can use a computer for. There is no charge to use our computers but, if you need to print something, there is a small charge per printed page.

September is National Senior Center Month so stop by any weekday for a great home cooked lunch for a suggested $5 donation.

Take in Bingo, Pinochle, Euchre, Bridge, Dominos, Canasta, Kings on the Corner, Scrabble during your visit. These groups are always looking for new participants.

always looking for new players to take in a game of cutthroat, 9-ball, 8-ball or whatever pool game you enjoy!

If we don’t have an activity you would like to share with fellow seniors, just give us a call and Betty will visit with you about available days and hours. We are always willing to try new ideas!

We offer a wide variety of exciting activities and classes at the WCSC during September: Illinois Secretary of State’s office, Department of Senior and Community Services is offering a free Rules of the Road Class on Thursday, Sept. 1. Fancy Feet Foot Clinic takes place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7. Call Fancy Feet and make your reservation.

Also this month, a Cash Flow in Retirement Seminar will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept.

8. AARP’s Driver Safety Class is from 8 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Sept. 14, and Thursday, Sept. 15. Call and get registered. WCSC’s Medicare Information class begins at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept.

16. And our friends from NIAAA will be conducting a Medicare Fraud Presentation at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28. Check the Special Events page for additional activities and more details.

Stop by and check out the various special events we have added to celebrate National Senior Center Month including: Make A Hat Day at 11 a.m.

Sept. 15; the Price Is Right

There, I did it again. For the past 4 years, I have greeted you in September with those words. It’s just a reminder that, to me, I feel that life has a way of hitting the reset button every September.

School has started, summer vacations and activities are mostly behind us, TV series are ending their summer reruns and, once again giving us new episodes and the days are getting shorter. I am a mem-

ber of several Boards and committees, many of which do not meet over the summer and are now starting up again. In any case, I’ve said each year that, to me, the real New Year’s Day should be Sept.

1, not January.

A big thank you goes out this month to all those of you who helped support us by attending, or donating to our annual Luau supper. Once again, it was a big success and a good time for all. Thanks also to those

By Doug Vandersee Last year at this time I wrote, “Hopefully, the budget battle in Springfield will be resolved or closer to being resolved by the time you read this in late August.”

They have come up with a funding bill to get us to Dec. 31, 2016, but there is no guarantee State funds will be available for the rest of FY17.

The Whiteside County Senior Center and Whiteside County Public Transportation receive local, county, state and federal grant funding for our pro-

grams, services, and staff.

United Way and other local organizations and foundations provide local matching funds for many of these grants.

Thank you to everyone for their continued support. Keep writing your legislators as many seniors do need services to help them stay in their own home instead of a nursing home!

September starts with a class reunion and then an extra day off for Labor Day – yay!

The Stage Door starts its regular dance classes after each Labor Day and throughout the school year.

Line dancing is every Tuesday sometimes beginning at 9, but most come at the 10 session Having come from a Human Resources background, I’m excited about the Chamber’s Labor Laws Seminar which will be held in the Ballroom on Sept. 9 for Chamber members.

It’s only 2 hours, but a lot of information can get packed in during that time frame.

Chamber members call Vicki Carlson at 284-3361 to get signed up. It’s free, it’s close.

On Sept. 16, state Senator Tom Demmer (R-Dixon) will be holding his annual Senior Citizens Health Fair in the Ballroom.

He’ll have different vendors here for you to check in with and our Outreach staff will be one of those, so make plans to attend.

Autumn and Brandon Brady celebrated their vows with a wedding and reception July 9 at Post House Ballroom.

And Dixon Main Street’s Lunch and Learn program will be Dr. Appenheimer speaking about Advanced Directives.

My understanding is this is about end of life issues. The caterer is Salamandra, and sponsor is Sauk Valley Title.

How Does Retiree Insurance Work with Medicare?

Have trouble hearing on the cell phone?

Dear Marci, I have retiree insurance from my previous job, and I will be turning 65 in a few months. Do I have to sign up for Medicare even though I already have coverage?

– Jean (Yakima, Washington) Dear Jean, If you have retiree insurance, it is a good idea to sign up for Medicare when you become eligible. According to Medicare rules, retiree insurance pays secondary to Medicare. This means that Medicare pays first for your health care, and then your retiree coverage pays for some or all of the costs that Medicare did not cover. If you do not sign up for Medicare, you may have problems accessing coverage. There are a few things to consider.

First, if you become eligible for Medicare and don’t sign up, your retiree policy may not cover you.

Many retiree policies require you to sign up for Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance) and may not make payment until Medicare does. If your retiree policy does cover your health care costs, it may later recoup payments it made when Medicare was supposed to pay primary.

Another consequence of not signing up for Medicare is the possibility of a late enrollment penalty (LEP). An individual can be subject to an LEP if they do not sign up for Medicare when they are first eligible to do so.

You can avoid a late enrollment penalty by signing up for Medicare three months before or up to three months after you turn 65.

Note that some retiree policies provide creditable prescription drug coverage. Creditable coverage means that your coverage is

as good as or better than Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage. If you have creditable drug coverage through your retiree plan, you can choose not to sign up for a Part D plan and not face a late enrollment penalty later should you lose your retiree coverage and decide to enroll in a Part D plan.

The takeaway point is that you should sign up for Medicare Part A and Part B when you are first eligible. Check with your former employer to find out if you have creditable drug coverage before deciding whether to sign up for a Part D plan.

Illinois Telecommunications Access Corporation (ITAC) has added a program to help those with cellular service that are having trouble hearing on the phone.

The program still provides free amplified telephones and captioning telephones to Illinois residents that are hard of hearing.

Applicants must be certified as hard of hearing by a doctor, nurse practitioner or audiologist, live in Illinois, and have a service that remits to the program.

Lee County Council on Aging (LCCOA) and Whiteside County Senior Center (WCSC) are selection centers for ITAC. Walk-ins are welcomed from 9 a.m.

I also was the Assistant Center Director at Mabley Developmental Center. During my career, I participated in Joint Commission accreditations, State inspections, and initiated new programs in health and human services. After retirement, I became a volunteer Advocate for Lee County CASA, and several years later, was asked to be the Supervisor of the CASA program in Carroll County.

I come to the Senior Center several times a week to participate in Zumba and line dancing, and have had the pleasure to meet many of the fine employees. I believe the Lee County Council on Aging is a key organization in this area,

I have served for the last four years as a member of the LCCOA Board of Directors. I am currently on the Executive Committee and serve as Secretary to the Board.

My interest in the work of LCCOA has been heightened by the needs and struggles of friends and family. These have made me keenly aware of the many contributions being made every day by LCCOA to assist the needs of our citizens.

By way of background, I have completed four university degrees including the doctorate in Educational Psychology.

I have taught college courses for 53 years including 48 years at Sauk Valley Community College. I have taught college level “dual credit” classes at six regional high schools including Dixon, Amboy, Walnut, Sterling and Oregon.

I have lived in the Lee County area my entire life except for 3 years with the Army, including two tours of duty in Vietnam.

I’m 69 years old and married to my wonderful wife, Debbie, for 35 years. I have 2 children, son, Chris, 46, and daughter, Lora Fassler, 45 and also from Dixon. I have been blessed with six grandchildren, three boys and three girls.

I am retired from the automotive business after 44 years. I owned Family Affair Motorcars for 25 years. I currently work part time for Kreider Services and the Lee-Ogle Transportation System as a bus driver.

I have served as State President for the Illinois Independent Auto Dealers for two terms. I currently am a member of the Dixon Elks Lodge, Dixon VFW Post 540, Rock River Valley Vietnow and Lee County Council on Aging.

Lee County Council on Aging’s, Ruth Mammen is organizing a Community Wide Health Fair in Sublette, featuring various organizations, nonprofits, and companies in and around the Lee County area that may benefit you and those you know!

Vendors will be ranging from the Lee County Health Department to Veteran’s Affairs to Lifescape, Assisted Living, Nursing Homes, and so much more.

Naturally, we will have a booth detailing services we assist with here at LCCOA as well.

As most of you all know, Ruth is the Sublette area caseworker, she has heard from many of you that this is just the sort of thing that this community needs, so come out and join her in her efforts to help build up Sublette.

Gain knowledge of many programs, oppor-

tunities, and services that you could benefit from in Lee County that stretch even further than just the services at LCCOA. The top priority of this health fair is the services that will benefit the aging population and their caregivers.

There will be free blood pressure checks, ITAC testing (for free amplified phones and cell phone amplifier), raffles, giveaways, and lunch will be provided for a “good will” donation of your choice, beginning around 11:30.

Let’s build up Sublette, gain community resources and get socializing with our neighbors at this free community health

fair, designed with you in mind. We’re here for you Sublette!

In addition to these free services, Lee County Health Department will be offering an adult flu clinic (as long as the vaccine comes in on time), they will be accepting Medicare, Medicaid and most other health insurance, or available for a cash price of $30.

The flu clinic will be available only from 9 to 11 a.m.

Notes from the kitchen September is National Senior Center Month.

I want to take this opportunity to promote a positive and welcoming center you can call home.

It’s exciting that we are continuing to see new faces here at the WCSC. I have successfully started framing pictures of our devoted customers, or shall I say, extended family.

Our kitchen volunteers and I have embraced the notion that family matters.

When I say family, I do not mean just flesh and blood, but family in our eyes mean those who share love, acceptance, laughter, meaning, and respect for one another.

All of you are our extended family, and we care deeply about your opinions.

That being said, I heard that the new table arrangements were less than a success, but I have compromised and believe that I have arranged the tables to suit everyone.

Outreach at WCSC

SASSY STEPPERS AT SENIOR SHOWCASE The Sassy Steppers from Lee County Council on Aging and the Whiteside County Senior Center line dancers paired up and entertained a crowd at the Senior Showcase in August at Northland Mall in Sterling.

Outreach at LCCOA This month our highlight isn’t a program or benefit that we are focusing on, it’s the chance for you to get to know one of your Outreach Caseworkers.

Through their years here you have likely gotten to know one or both of them if you are a regular client, but for those of you who don’t know them or have never been here this is our chance to offer you some insight into who they are and why they continue to do what they do for you.

Samantha: This year, Samantha will be celebrating her sixth year being employed by LCCOA on Nov. 22.

She has worked in the public eye most of her life except when she worked in a factory for a few brief years.

She has been known to say that this career path chose her, and she couldn’t be happier.

She has several certificates, including from the Senior Health Insurance Program as well.

For Samantha, it’s about trying to make a difference in someone’s life that keeps her here.

Samantha loves to work with clients, teaching them what she knows and helping them in ways they

might not have known about.

She enjoys all aspects of her job but is especially passionate when she helps someone obtain an amplified phone and they can hear their family on the phone for the first time in a long time.

Samantha says “It’s an incredible feeling knowing I’ve helped someone to make that connection again, helped them to speak to someone they might not have otherwise had the chance to, it’s a great part of my job that I see first-hand, and I absolutely love to hear about their experiences when they want to share them with me.”

“Family,” that’s what Samantha says is a word that describes what she feels about life, or at least how she describes it.

Her reasoning on this is, “Life is not life without family, and family is everything in life, it’s what makes life worth living for.”

Samantha has been married for 11 years and has two beautiful boys, Robbie (7) and Jacob (6 months).

It’s all about family in her spare time, “immediate

and extended, by blood or by love, it’s all about family”, she says.

When asked, Samantha describes herself as personable, kind, compassionate, loving and helpful.

Samantha hopes to make a difference in this world, big or small, just ... a difference.

When we asked people to described Samantha, she was described as: loud, upbeat, friendly, knowledgeable, outgoing, compassionate and delightful.

A word given when asked what they think of when they think of Samantha; “ITAC”.

I guess that’s because she talks about it when she’s given a chance.

The best way to find the plan that is the cheapest is to compare them.

The Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) is a free counseling program for Medicare beneficiaries. They are available to help Medicare beneficiaries get unbiased information to make an informed decision on Medicare coverage.

SHIP counselors are available at the WCSC to assist Medicare beneficiaries with comparing plans. Medicare is available online at medicare. gov or by phone at 1-800633-4227 to help you compare plans as well.

To get the best results in comparing drug plans SHIP counselors and Medicare will need an accurate medication list which would include: the full name of the medication, the dosage (i.e. milligrams), and the quantity (amount of pill, vials, etc.) received in a one month supply.

Get informed and save with the help of the WCSC’s SHIP counselors 815-622-9230 or 1-888622-9230. This is the busiest time for year for SHIP counselor’s so please call as early as possible to get an appointment.

WCSC Medicare class The Whiteside County Senior Center’s last two Medicare classes in 2016 will be at 1:30 p.m. Sept.

16 and Dec. 16.

This class is free and is designed for beneficiaries becoming new to Medicare to learn about their options.

Beneficiaries that are already on Medicare are welcome to attend as well.

Adult Protective Services presentation

In the United States, the fastest growing population are those aged 85 and older. In 2009, one out of nine seniors reported being a victim of some type of abuse in the past 12 months. That number continues to rise. It is believed that for every single report made of abuse, there are 23 that are not made. Lifescape Community Services in Sterling is the Illinois Department on Aging’s designated Adult Protective Services program for Carroll, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside Counties.

We also investigate allegations of abuse for those with a disability between the ages of 18 and 59. Abuse takes many forms, and in most cases victims are subjected to more than one type of mistreatment. By Illinois law, there are seven types of identifiable abuse: Physical Abuse, Sexual Abuse, Emotional Abuse, Confinement, Passive Neglect, Willful deprivation and financial exploitation. Mandated reporters are required to report suspected cases of abuse within 24 hours. With every report, reporters are kept confidential.

If you suspect abuse of anyone 60 years or older, or disabled between the ages of 18-59, please call the APS hotline at 1-866-800-1409 or Lifescape Community Services in Sterling at 1-815-490-1125.

The basic information that we provide will help our community members that are new to Medicare and those who want more information, make a more informed decision when it comes to their options with Medicare. Our Outreach Department staff are trained Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) volunteer counselors. SHIP is a free counseling service provided by the Illinois Department of Aging.
