Dixon’s Music Man Turns 80 Jim Wiltz will celebrate his 80th birthday Dec. 16, 2014. Jim brought the magic of music to the choral department at Dixon High School where he was choral director for 33 years. He produced many Broadway musicals with his wife, Sharon Dale-Wiltz, accomplished dance instructor and choreographer. Wiltz expanded the choral department over the years to include a wide variety of choirs and ensembles providing numerous performances in the community. His award-winning choirs toured throughout the U.S. and Europe. Jim added richness and meaning to the lives of many students through his passion for the performing arts. Through his motivational teaching and encouragement, many of his students have achieved success as music teachers, composers, professors, and
Tony and Grammy award winners. Jim attended Illinois State University to receive his bachelor’s in music education and vocal performance, master’s in music at Wayne State University, and extended doctoral studies at the University of Illinois. He served as district president for the state music educators association. Wiltz was named Teacher of the Year by the Dixon Junior Chamber of Commerce. He shared his love for sports by coaching girls and boys tennis teams at Newman High School in Sterling. Jim was choir director at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Dixon, where he is a member of their St. Vincent de Paul Society. Sterling graduate retires from military service Lt. Col. Michael Rockwell, a 1983 graduate of Sterling High School, retired Dec. 1, 2014, from the Army with 32 years of military service. Rockwell most recently served as the executive officer of the 71st Troop Command, where he directed a major command staff responsible for five brigades including special forces, military intelligence, and counter-intelligence units. Rockwell began his military service in 1983, when he enlisted as a private in the Army Infantry. He served 4 years as a rifleman with the 2nd Armored Division at Fort
Hood, Texas, and the 2nd Infantry Division in Korea. Rockwell has completed five overseas and three combat tours. He has been awarded the Bronze Star, the Legion of Merit, the Combat Action Badge, the Expert Infantryman’s Badge, Air Assault Wings, the Military Emergency Management Badge, three Meritorious Service Medals, four Army Commendation Medals, three Army Good Conduct Medals, two National Defense Service Medals, two Armed Forces Expeditionary Medals, three Armed Forces Service Medals, the Afghanistan
Campaign Medal, and two NATO Service Medals. Rockwell has served as a major command executive officer, Homeland Response Force Future Plans and Operations officer, executive officer for the Texas Regional Training Institute, deputy commander for an AgriBusiness Development Team while in Afghanistan, professor of military science at Texas A&M University, battalion fire direction officer, target officer, fire support officer, and commander of a multiple launch rocket system battery. Rockwell is a graduate of the Army Command
and General Staff College, Combined Arms and Service Staff School, Multiple Launch Rocket System School, Field Artillery Captain’s Career Course, the Emergency Management Multiagency Coordination Course, Rappel Master’s School, Air Assault Course, and Infantryman’s School. Rockwell holds a master’s degree in education from North Central University and a Bachelor of Science degree in economics from Texas A&M University. He and his wife, Tracy, plan to travel and enjoy time with their family and five children.
