reach counselors, Ruth and Samantha, are here to help you evaluate your plan options, and help you decide whether you should stay with your current plan or switch. Many people assume that they can just stay with their plan and it will always be the best, but this is not always the case. Coverages change, and so do peoples’ needs. Your current plan may not still be the best. And, while I’m on my soapbox, I can tell you that buying a plan because your neighbor or friend has it is generally not the best way to pick. Even husbands and wives may need different programs to maximize their benefits, which is where we come in. Call or stop in to make an

appointment with Ruth or Samantha to help choose your plan for 2015. But do it soon. Appointments fill fast, and when Dec. 7 ends, so does your window to enroll. If you would like to learn more about Medicare Part D, mark your calendar to attend a special program presented by Jeff Barnes from the Northwestern Illinois Area Agency for Aging on Friday, Nov. 7.

Jeff is here specifically to talk about Part D, but can answer general questions about Medicare as well, so don’t miss this if you have questions.

We are already getting ready for our annual Santa’s Workshop, coming up on Dec. 6. Right now we are asking for donations of new or gen-

tly used items that can be sold at the workshop.

We put this on every year thanks to the generosity of our friends, so, if you have items to donate, just bring them down to the center any day between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Wednesday, Nov. 12, will be a very busy day at the WCSC as Wal-Mart Distribution Center will be hosting a free community Thanksgiving meal from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This meal is free and open to everyone. Come out and enjoy a meal of turkey, potatoes, beans, dessert, and pop or water.

Walgreen’s will be providing flu shots before, during, and after the meal.

Hours are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost is $25.99 or free with your Medicare card. Come enjoy a free meal and receive your flu

shot. Finally, at 12:30 p.m. we will be playing bingo in the big room, so stay around and win some great prizes furnished by Sterling Pavilion.

On Friday, Nov. 14, the ADRC outreach staff will be hosting a Medicare information class beginning at 1:30 p.m. Please call 815-622-9230 to register for the class. Medicare open enrollment runs through Dec. 7, so brush up on your Medicare knowledge prior to making an appointment for enrollment. At 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, Melissa Magon-Wicks, marketing director from Transitions Nursing and Rehab, will conduct an insurance Q&A.

ow! Just where does the time go? October began my fifth year as your executive director here at LCCOA. It seems like just yesterday. I guess that’s because of all the fun we’ve had along the way, and all the wonderful people I come into contact with every day.

Or, maybe, it’s the rewards that come from helping people.

People like “Susan,” who stopped in just a few days ago. Susan is a widow whose income is

less than $5,000 a year!

She needs daily medicine by prescription and needed help paying for it. As she has just turned 65, she is now eligible for Medicare and her income qualifies her for federal “Extra Help.” One of our great Outreach workers, Ruth Mammen, worked the computer and phones and was able to find a prescription program with no premium, and a co-pay of only $2.65 for each of her prescriptions. Susan was so

happy, and relieved, that she started crying and hugging our staff.

While we can’t promise everyone plans like that (remember, Susan has a very low income and qualifies for Extra Help) I do urge everyone on Medicare – regardless of income – to review their prescription drug program during this all important open enrollment period between now and Dec. 7. Our Out-

ee County Council on Aging and Whiteside County Senior Center are selection centers for the free amplified telephone program sponsored by the Illinois Telecommunications Access Corporation. You need to be certified as hard of hearing, be an Illinois resident, and have a landline telephone to qualify for this program. Please bring your phone bill with all the pages, proof of address (driver’s license, state ID, or a bill with your name and address on it) and we will help you with this program.

LCCOA and WCSC have outreach caseworkers who provide Options Counseling, Medicare counseling, information and/or assistance to anyone who is 60 or older and persons with disabilities. The caseworkers are Certified Information and Referral Specialists for Aging (CIRS-A) and

Senior Health Insurance Program volunteer counselors. They receive training on a variety of programs and network with several agencies in order to be informed of the options available to their clients. WCSC also offers a monthly Medicare information class.

In order for our caseworkers to best assess your needs, please ask what to bring when making your appointment or bring all of the following information – Driver’s license or state ID, Proof of all income for this year (Social Security benefits, pensions, interest, wages, any other income), Medicare card, Medicare Part D card, Medicaid card, value of all assets (bank accounts, CD’s, any investments, investment property, business assets, cash value of life insurance, car, house, prepaid burial, burial plots etc.), proof of income for 2013 (even

if you do not file income taxes we will need tax documents for: Social Security benefits (SSA1099), pension (1099R), interest (1099-INT), dividends (1099-DIV), wages (W-2), etc.), Social Security cards, a list of current medications (including 30 day quantity and dosage). You should call ahead of time for an appointment.

Home visits can be provided to clients who are homebound. Caseworkers also travel to several locations each month in both Lee and Whiteside counties (see below).

Some assistance programs may be seasonal, may have deadlines, timeframes, or may require renewal.

This month’s reminder: The annual open enrollment period for Medicare Part D prescription drug plans and Medicare Advantage Plans ends Dec. 7. Call in, set up an appointment, and ask what you need to bring.

Please mark Saturday, Dec. 13, on your calendar, as we will be hosting the fifth annual Santa’s Workshop from 8 a.m. to noon.

Parents and children can enjoy a pancake breakfast with Santa from 8 to 10:30 a.m., and after eating, the children will enter Santa’s Workshop with one of Santa’s special elves. The

children will be able to purchase a variety of gifts, ranging in price from 50 cents to $3, for their parents or siblings. They will wrap their gifts before rejoining their parents in the dining room. Breakfast is $3 for adults, $1.50 for children. Pictures with Santa are available for $2.

We are looking for volunteers to help with making gifts or furnishing items for Santa’s Workshop. If you have craft materials,

Christmas decorations, or gently used toys, including Barbie dolls and Beanie Babies, please call and talk with Betty. This has been a very popular event the past 4 years, as last year we had more than 200 children go through Santa’s Workshop. You will make an impact on a child’s life by volunteering to help with this very special event.

November looks like another busy month at

Keep those in mind when you are cleaning out or rearranging your home. We accept donations from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. It’s okay to call ahead but not really necessary.

illions of low- to moderate-income people, especially those 60 and older, need help preparing their taxes.

Help them get all the deductions and credits they deserve, by volunteering for AARP Foundation Tax-Aide.

Started in 1968 by four volunteers, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is now the nation’s largest free, volunteer-run tax preparation program.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers are trained and IRS-certified each year to ensure their knowledge of revisions to the U.S. tax code. With their help, taxpayers received $1.3 billion in refunds, and more than $244 million EITCs. By using AARP Foundation Tax-Aide,

On Oct. 9 Lee County Council on Aging’s Outreach Department held a meeting with individuals on the Introduction to Medicare’s Part D Open Enrollment. The people who attended learned more about Part D, why it’s needed, who needs it and how we can help. This meeting allowed for us to answer all of their questions in full and also review other various programs of assistance. We’d like to thank the individuals who attended this meeting, and also to remind others, that may not have been able attend, that we are still here, and can do a one-on-one meeting with you if you would like to learn more. Notes from the kitchen T he Holidays are right around the corner, where has the year gone?

Thanksgiving and Christmas plans are on the works for most of us.

We here at the senior center are no different, with Santa’s Workshop coming up on Dec. 13.

This being the season for thanksgiving, I would like to thank all those who have been there for the kitchen and staff.

We have the Sauk Valley Food Bank and Salvation Army that are the keys to offering you the best meals possible.

They provide all the extra salads, vegetables, fruit and extra treats.

I also have to thank County Market and Kroger for without them

we would not have the doughnuts with our coffee or our breads and rolls that go with our meals.

All these wonderful organizations help us keep our meal prices down.

This will be my last Notes from the kitchen.

Since my stroke 2 years ago and other health issues, I can no longer do the job I love to the best of my ability. I have struggled with this decision, but the time has come.

I have had 6 years here and have loved almost every day of it. I have met some incredible people and have been honored to be invited to be a small part of their lives. I have made some wonderful friends

and will cherish them always. I have seen awesome strength and grace in the people I have served in the dining room. I have been privileged to be invited into their homes and lives, I enjoy and look forward to coming into work.

My last day will be my favorite holiday, Halloween.

Words cannot express what I feel, so I will just say thank you for all you have done for me by being you. You have enriched my life and given me so much encouragement. I will never forget many of you and hope to continue our friendships.

hen my sister and cousin were in eighth grade (as I remember it), they had to write a Thanksgiving poem. My mom (Joan Sheridan – many of you know her) wrote one for my cousin, Judy. I don’t know why she didn’t write it for my sister, Linda, but it’s probably my favorite poem, followed by “Trees” by Joyce Kilmer.

Although it’s never been titled as far as I know, I’ll give it a title.

A Thanksgiving Poem

CAPE COD BUS ADVENTURE

Two buses, totaling 108 people, enjoyed a 9-day trip to Cape Cod in September. Everyone said they had a good time, with 4 nights in the quaint Cape Cod area including Marthaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Vineyard. Medicare open enrollment continues The annual enrollment period for Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage plans continues through Dec. 7.

This is the time you can change your coverage if you are not satisfied with your Medicare Part D drug plan or your Medicare Advantage plan. This is also the time when you can enroll if you did not do so during your initial enrollment period.

If you take several medications, check and see if your current plan is still going to be the best plan for you for 2015. Medicare Part D plans can and do change their formulary and premiums from year to year. Each plan has a different formulary. The formulary is how the Medicare Part D plans structure the cost of the medications at the pharmacy.

They structure their formulary in tiers. For example a tier 1 medication would be the cheapest and a tier 5 would be the most expensive.

Medicare Advantage plans are plans provided by a private company or Managed Care Organization that contracts with Medicare to provide your Medicare coverage for you.

The best way to find the plan that is cheapest for

you is to compare them.

The Senior Health Insurance Program is a free counseling program for Medicare beneficiaries.

They are available to help Medicare beneficiaries get unbiased information to make an informed decision on your Medicare coverage.

SHIP Counselors are available in Whiteside and Lee counties to assist Medicare beneficiaries

with comparing plans.

Medicare also is available online at www.medicare.gov, or by phone at 800-633-4227, to help you compare plans.

To get the best results in comparing drug plans you will need an accurate medication list which would include the full name of the medication, the dosage (i.e. milligrams), and the quantity (amount of pill, vials, etc)

you receive in a onemonth supply.

Jeff will explain the difference between Medicare fraud and abuse, and various ways that they can be used by unscrupulous persons. Jeff will finish with ways to protect yourself by detecting abuse and fraud and the importance of reporting the errors. He will also mention open enrollment, which runs through Dec. 7.
