Many thanks to all of you who joined us for our annual luau this year.

Your purchases and generous donations help us keep going and providing free services. A huge shout out to John Walker who, as always, provided a delicious meal.

While its worst effects come later in the season, this is also the time to prepare yourself for another flu season. Once again we will be hosting a number of flu clinics this year when you can come to the Community Center and receive your flu shots for the coming season. Our first flu clinic of the year will be from 10 a.m.-noon Sept. 9, provided by the great folks from Homebound Healthcare. They are even going to stick

around afterwards for some fun with a special “Price is Right” game, starting at 12:30 p.m.

Come on down! Additional flu clinics will be scheduled in October and November. Bring your Medicare or other insurance card with you to the clinic when you receive your shot. Those without insurance coverage will pay $25 for their flu shot.

Did you know we have a medical supply loan closet? Unfortunately, for some of us there may come a time when we need a little assistance in getting around or performing household tasks. If this is you, or if you know someone, we

have a large selection of donated medical equipment – walkers, canes, wheelchairs, commodes and the like – that we loan out to persons who need them. All we ask is a refundable $5 deposit and you are welcome to use the equipment as long as you need it.

When you no longer do, please return it to us so the next person can use it So break out the New Year’s treat and favors and enjoy. Believe it or not, next month we will be discussing the Medicare Open enrollment period for Part D prescription benefits. See you then.

By now, I hope you know what I mean when I say that every September. As the days grow shorter, the hot summer temperatures begin to moderate, and students head back to school, it always seems to me like things really start over in September, not January.

And so it is here at Lee County Council on Aging. After a summer filled with activities,

classes, and fundraising, it’s time for us all to step back and reflect on what lies ahead. As I write this, the State of Illinois is still in the midst of a budget impasse, and that is beginning to have an effect on many of us.

Here at LCCOA we have, so far, been able to keep things going but, if it goes on much longer, we may be forced to curtail both hours and services.

By Doug Vandersee Yes, the Whiteside County Senior Center is still open and providing programs, activities, senior services, and daily meals for those who need them. Hopefully, the budget battle in Springfield will be resolved, or closer to being resolved, by the time you read this.

The Whiteside County Senior Center and Whiteside County Public Transportation receive local, county, state, and federal grant funding for our programs, services, and staff. United Way and other local organizations and foundations provide

local matching funds for many of these grants.

Thanks to everyone for their continued support.

We hope to continue receiving a portion of federal funding through the Older American Act as our grant contract goes through the end of September. Unfortunately, most of the federal money comes through the State and many of the employees who process the payments are either furloughed or not allowed to print checks, so we continue to survive on the reserves we normally use in October, November,

Oxygen equipment covered by Medicare Dear Marci, A few years ago, Original Medicare covered some of the costs of a walker I was prescribed for use in my home. My doctor recently gave me a prescription for oxygen equipment.

Is this durable medical equipment like my walker, and will Medicare help pay for it?

– Samir, Dearborn, Michigan Dear Samir, Yes, oxygen equipment is considered durable medical equipment (DME), and Medicare will help cover its costs. Specifically, Medicare Part B covers DME as long as the equipment is: • Durable, meaning you can use it again.

• Helps your medical condition.

• Meant for use in your home, although you are also allowed to use it outside of the home.

• Likely to last for three years or more.

It is important to note that Medicare pays for DME only if you get it from the right kind of supplier. For

Original Medicare, this depends on where you live. If you live in a region that is part of the competitive bidding demonstration, you will have to get your DME from a supplier that participates in the program. If you live in a region that is not part of the demonstration, you must get your DME through a supplier that has approval from Medicare.

You can find a Medicare-approved supplier by visiting www.medicare. gov/supplier. Note that if you have a Medicare Advantage Plan you should contact your plan to find a certified supplier.

Although supplier restrictions are the same for oxygen equipment as for other types of DME, other coverage rules are different so the process for getting your oxygen equipment will be different from the process you used for getting your walker.

Unlike other types of DME, oxygen equipment is always rented in a 5-year cycle. Medicare will pay the supplier a monthly rental fee for the first 36 months. The fee includes all equipment, oxygen, and supplies. You must pay 20 percent of each month’s rental fee. For the

Finally, at the end of 5 years, you will have the choice to either get new oxygen equipment from your supplier or change to a different supplier.

Throughout this 5-year period, the supplier must keep your equipment in good working order. During the first 36 months of the rental period, the supplier must provide you with supplies and maintenance free of charge. During the last 24 months of the rental period, providers are allowed to bill you for in-home maintenance visits every 6 months.

NOTES FROM THE KITCHEN

Our plates runneth over from generosity We have been blessed with fresh produce such as cabbage, carrots, corn on the cob, muskmelon, and many other kinds of produce donated by Selmi’s, Poci’s, Sauk Valley Food Bank, and Wal-Mart. When there is an abundance of food donated, we try to share it with all who are part of the food program, and the people who come for our activities.

We have also been able to provide a free meal at the Center, thanks to the Wal-Mart Distribution Center.

Wal-Mart’s next free meal will be provided on Sept.

2, so come join us as Wal-Mart gives back to the community.

We will be closed on Monday, Sept. 7 for Labor Day, but will be back in the kitchen on Tuesday to feed our devoted customers. I am excited to see we have new people attending our meals, so help make them feel welcome.

Thanks, all of you who donate to our kitchen; we appreciate the support. I am thankful for the return of our former cook, Jackie V. for enthusiastically coming to fill in as cook as I went away on vacation.

The Emporium Thrift Center was opened to try to help provide more funding for the Whiteside County Senior Center. Our mission was, and still is, to provide a place where residents can donate gently used clothing, household items, books, furniture, and other items to be sold to those who have a need for such items.

Proceeds go to support the Whiteside County Senior Center (a 501 (C) 3 charitable non-profit organization), and provide needed senior services throughout Whiteside County.

Your donations are the staple that keeps our doors open. Approximately 20 volunteers do all the work that goes into keeping the doors open and shelves stocked with clean, wrinkle-free clothes and other products. LCCOA’s staff reaches out to residents The Lee County Council on Aging’s Outreach staff travels to various locations throughout the area each month to provide information and assistance to residents throughout Lee County. These sites include: Ashton, Franklin Grove, Amboy, Sublette, and Paw Paw. Staff members help connect older adults and persons with disabilities to services such as Medicare and Medicaid, and have information available about different programs they may qualify for.

The times and locations of these information sites are located on the “Monthly Activities” page of every Golden Echo.

LCCOA Loan Closet is still open Service loans out walkers, wheel chairs and other medical equipment Do you or someone you know need some type of small, durable medical equipment? LCCOA still has a Loan Closet available to the public, and all it takes is a minimum of a $5 deposit (per item) to request a loan from our closet.

The $5 deposit covers the item for a period of 3 months, at which time you can choose to continue to use of the item. However, the deposit is then remanded as a donation to the Center for that extended use. This also gives us the right to call and verify that the item is still being used and has not just been forgotten, as we have other clien-

Help is available to Illinois residents through ITAC If you have trouble hearing on the phone, Illinois has a program to help you.

The program provides free amplified telephones or a captioning telephone to Illinois residents who are hard of hearing. It is sponsored by the Illinois Telecommunications Access Corporation (ITAC).

To be eligible, you will have to be certified as hard-of-hearing, live in Illinois, and have a landline telephone service that qualifies you for this program.

Lee County Council on Aging (LCCOA) and Whiteside County Senior Center (WCSC) are selection centers for ITAC. You may call the WCSC 815-622-9230 or LCCOA at 815-288-9236 in advance to set up an appointment to see if you qualify for this wonderful program.

To apply, we will need your phone bill (with all the pages) and proof of address (driver’s license, state ID, or a bill with your name and address on it).

Medicare Fraud Prevention with Jeff Barnes from NIAAA, at LCCOA 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30

Topics covered include a short explanation of the different parts of Medicare A, B and C (the Advantage Plans), D, and supplements. Jeff will explain the difference between Medicare fraud and abuse and the various ways they can be used by unscrupulous persons, as well as the importance of being aware of what services you are receiving and what you are billed for.
