Flu clinics at Lee County Council on Aging It’s that time of year again! Time to think about pumpkins, food, and the holidays! However, it’s also the season for colds, flu, and germs. It’s time to be thinking about what you can do to prevent the spread of the flu and keep yourself healthy. The number one thing you can do for yourself and for others is get a flu shot. Flu shots are especially a good idea for the very young and the elderly. No appointment is needed. Bring your Medicare card and any other insurance cards you may have. Depending on your insurance, there may be a charge.

It is now recommended that everyone receive an annual flu shot, but seniors are particularly at risk, so be sure to come in for yours. (As with the great majority of our programs, these clinics are open to all ages!)

How about trivia? We had so much fun with our sanctioned senior spelling bee and Battle of the Brains trivia earlier this summer that we are going to bring them back

on a drop-in basis. Come participate in a friends spelling competition on Sept. 10, and get ready for Trivia on Tuesday, Oct. 14. These will be very low key and just for fun (well, there might be some small prizes, but nothing elaborate) and we hope to repeat them on a regular basis if the interest is there. Can we count on you?

ee County Council on Aging and Whiteside County Senior Center are selection centers for the free amplified telephoneprogram sponsored by the Illinois Telecommunications Access Corporation. You need to be certified as hard of hearing, be an Illinois resident, and have a landline telephone to qualify for this program. Please bring your phone bill with all the pages, proof of address (driver’s license, state ID, or a bill with your name and address on it) and we will help you with this program.

LCCOA and WCSC have outreach caseworkers who provide Options counseling, Medicare counseling, information and/or assistance to anyone who is 60 or older and persons with disabilities. The caseworkers are Certified Information and Referral Specialists for Aging (CIRS-A) and Senior Health Insur-

ance Program volunteer counselors. They receive training on a variety of programs and network with several agencies in order to be informed of the options available to their clients. WCSC also offers a monthly Medicare information class.

In order for our caseworkers to best assess your needs, please ask what to bring when making your appointment or bring all of the following information – Driver’s license or state ID, Proof of all income for this year (Social Security benefits, pensions, interest, wages, any other income), Medicare card, Medicare Part D card, Medicaid card, value of all assets (bank accounts, CD’s, any investments, investment property, business assets, cash value of life insurance, car, house, prepaid burial, burial plots etc.), proof of income for 2013 (even if you do not file income

taxes we will need tax documents for: Social Security benefits (SSA1099), pension (1099R), interest (1099-INT), dividends (1099-DIV), wages (W-2), etc.), Social Security cards, a list of current medications (including 30 day quantity and dosage). You should call ahead of time for an appointment.

Home visits can be provided to clients who are

homebound. Caseworkers also travel to several locations each month in both Lee and Whiteside counties (see below).

Some assistance programs may be seasonal, may have deadlines, timeframes, or may require renewal.

This annual event is open to all paid members of LCCOA. Members will receive an invitation, the election ballot and a short biography of each candidate in the mail Current board members that are up for reelection are Tom Lawless and Joe Rudolphi. New candidate is Teresa Brunick.

If you are interested in voting in the election, and are not currently a paid member, you need to pay your dues to receive a ballot. Membership for 1 year is $20 per person or $30 for a household.

What is an observation stay?

Dear Marci, I was in the hospital for about two days. My nurse told me that my stay in the hospital was considered to be an observation stay and that Medicare would pay for my stay differently than an inpatient hospital stay. What is an observation stay? – Nancy, Portland, Maine Dear Nancy, An observation stay is an outpatient hospital stay. During this stay, you receive medical services that help the hospital doctor decide whether you should be admitted to the hospital as an inpatient or discharged from the hospital. For example, observation stays may occur if you go to the emergency room and a doctor has to monitor your symptoms. While the symptoms are monitored, the doctors decide whether you should be admitted or discharged.

You are an outpatient during an observation

stay even if you stay in the hospital overnight While observation stays may seem like inpatient hospital stays, staying in the hospital overnight does not make you a hospital inpatient. You are only considered to be an inpatient if you have been formally admitted into the hospital as a hospital inpatient by a hospital doctor. If you have not been formally admitted into the hospital as an inpatient, you are considered an outpatient. In general, doctors will admit you as a hospital inpatient if they expect you will need to stay at least two days overnight in the hospital.

Medicare Part A, the hospital insurance part of Medicare, covers inpatient hospital stays.

If you get your Medicare benefits through Original Medicare, the traditional Medicare program administered directly through the federal government, Part A covers most inpatient hospital care

you receive during your stay. In general, you or your supplemental insurance plan pays a one-time deductible for your hospital stay. After you meet the deductible, you do not have to pay a copayment for the first 60 days of your inpatient hospital stay.

Remember, a deductible is the amount you pay out of your own pocket for health care services you receive, before Medicare starts to pay for some of the cost of your care. A copayment, or copay, is the set amount you pay for care you receive, after Medicare pays for some of the cost of your care.

On the other hand, Medicare Part B, the medical insurance part of Medicare, covers outpatient care, such as health care services you receive while you are under observation in the hospital. If you have Original Medicare, Part B covers outpatient services you receive. If you are under observation in the hospital,

you typically pay a 20 percent coinsurance for each medical service you receive in the hospital after you have met your yearly Part B deductible. A coinsurance is the percentage amount you pay for care you receive, after Medicare pays for some of the cost of your care.

If you get your Medicare benefits through a Medicare Advantage plan, also known as a Medicare private health plan, different costs and rules may apply.

Contact your plan directly to learn more about your plan’s coverage of hospital care.

It is important to know whether you are considered to be a hospital inpatient or an outpatient since your Medicare costs and coverage may differ depending on your status because your costs may be higher if you are a hospital outpatient.

If you are in the hos-

pital, you or your family member should ask hospital staff whether you are an inpatient or an outpatient each day during your hospital stay, since this affects what you pay for hospital services. Keep in mind that whether you are an inpatient or outpatient can also affect whether you will qualify for Medicare coverage of skilled nursing facility care. If you have Original Medicare, Medicare will pay for skilled nursing facility care only if you have been in the hospital as a hospital inpatient for three nights in a row.

September is here already.

This year has flown by.

We have been blessed with produce from local gardeners and local businesses. We are still enjoying wonderful fruit and veggies from gardens.

We are looking forward to the fall and the colors that the season brings.

We are preparing for our Santa’s workshop in December. If you have any gently used items, or wish to donate craft supplies, or finished craft projects for the children to purchase, any and all would be appreciated.

It is shaping up to be a busy fall.

I would like to thank the Sauk Valley Food Bank, the Salvation Army, County Market, and Kroger for their donations. Also thanks to Poci’s and Selmi’s for the wonderful produce they have donated.

I looked out my window the other day and saw Jim Love clearing out the weeds in the rocks on the other side of the alley that separates the Senior Center from the municipal parking lot. I’ve seen fire fighters doing the same.

I’m sure Jim didn’t have a clue anyone saw his volunteerism in action.

Another person I’ve seen cleaning out weeds from this area is John Groshans. It’s great to see citizens doing things they don’t have to and without expectation of recognition, that help the city look better.

Sept. 12 is state Rep. Demmer’s Senior Citizen Health Fair. Senior agencies will be here, so put it on your calendar.

Sept. 17 is Dixon Main Street’s Lunch & Learn, come in and hear about the YWCA. KSB is the sponsor and you’ll get a great lunch for only $3.

Greyhound service could begin March 1 By now you may have been hearing about the new public transportation buzz in regards to Greyhound coming back to the area! Lee County, specifically the Administrative staff from Lee-Ogle Transportation System, has been working diligently with the Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Public and Intermodal and Greyhound Lines to develop a 2-year-pilot-project with federal financial interest. There is a newer program at the federal level known as Inter-City Bus Livability. The purpose of this project is to connect rural residents to larger urban areas for medical, shopping,

recreation, and most importantly supporting rural residents to embrace and support public transportation services.

At this time, Lee County has formally contracted with Greyhound to build two 26-passenger vehicles for this project.

Greyhound has submitted a purchase order and the vehicles are starting to be built and expect to be finished by December of this year. We anticipate service to actually begin on March 1, 2015. However, this date is tentative.

The routes will be two round-trips daily from Chicago to Moline, with extended service into Davenport, Iowa. The final

destinations will be the Greyhound Hub in Chicago and their hub in Davenport.

While the stops along the I-88 Corridor have not officially been finalized, we anticipate a stop in the Sterling and Rock Falls area, Dixon, Rochelle, DeKalb, and Aurora area. The prices are still to be determind.

What does this mean for the Sauk Valley residents and how does it affect Lee-Ogle Transportation and Whiteside County Public Transit. This project will allow rural residents to have access to the greater national transportation network by having a local pick up and provide access to interstate modes of transit such as a longer

Greyhound route, Amtrak, or even the airports. Lee-Ogle Transportation System, Whiteside County Public Transport and all the other rural systems will act as feeder service into this route. Residents will be able to reserve a ride on the rural system and be dropped off at the location to catch the Greyhound Line. In addition, all the stops will serve as ticket agents where you will be able to not only purchase your ticket into Chicago or Davenport, but also transfer tickets for extended service.
