Did you know that your brain needs nourishment as much as the rest of your body? It is important to keep it active and thinking. Join the University of Illinois Extension Service for four Mondays in August, beginning on the 4th, for “Breakfast for Your Brain.” You’ll learn

A 20- to 30-minute brisk walk with your spouse, child, grandchild, or your favorite pet is a good way to get some daily exercise and burn up some of the extra calories from all of your cookouts! Get up off the couch and get in some exercise. It will help

you cope with all of the daily stresses in your life! Good luck on starting a new habit which will impact your overall health!

Sometimes I have to ask myself where the time goes so fast. Fourth of July (and the Petunia Festival!) is behind us, and the “dog days” of August are right around the corner.

hile many may not have heard about National Senior Citizens Day, it occurs every year on Aug. 21. Initiated by our local President Ronald Reagan in 1988, this day is set apart to acknowledge the lifelong contributions seniors have made to their community and country.

President Reagan in Proclamation 5847 stated, “For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute,�

Ronald Reagan said. “We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older – places in which older people can participate to the fullest and can find the encouragement, acceptance,

assistance, and services they need to continue to lead lives of independence and dignity. “Now, Therefore, I, Ronald Reagan, president of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim Aug. 21, 1988, as National Senior Citizens Day. I call upon the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.�

It will also tell you who is renting the Ballroom if you need to know someone’s date.

As far as Saturdays go, Sept. 20, Oct. 18, and all Saturdays in November except the last one, Nov. 29, are available, and Dec. 27 is also available. That’s it for Saturdays this year.

For next year, all Saturdays in June are booked, and 3 days in May, although they are not all on a Saturday.

It’s best to get the ceremony and reception venues booked early, some dates fill up fast.

We have been especially enjoying the dÊcor our renters have been coming up with. That’s the best thing about my job.

A lot of times on Fridays I tell my co-workers to go upstairs and look around before they go home. They are always entranced.

Notes from the kitchen August is here already.

Where has the summer gone?

The kids are heading back to school and we are looking ahead to the holidays.

We here in the kitchen are enjoying produce from local growers and gardeners. The Sauk Valley Food Bank and the Salvation Army are also very generous in providing donations for our kitchen and commodity program here at the senior center. I cannot say enough about their commitment to the local pantries and kitchens.

We continue to make a nutritional meal for the best price we can. Food prices are on the move as you all know. We here in the kitchen are very aware of prices going up and the challenge it is to provide a good meal for a reasonable price.

We have Dog Daze coming up on Aug. 22, and it

should be a good time.

Depending on weather, maybe getting the grills out and roasting some hot dogs.

Also, Betty is heading up Santa’s Workshop, so any new or gently used items you wish to donate would be greatly appreciated.

We also have an excellent network of crafters that will use yarn, materials, plastic canvas, and any other variety of craft supplies to make things for the workshop. It will be here before we know it.

The year is flying by quickly.

Come see us for lunch and spend some time playing cards, dominoes, or just visiting.

Thanks to the wonderful volunteers in the kitchen who we could not function without.

The managers grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, chips, dessert and pop or water.

More volunteers came into the picture so with the generous donations and the many ambitious volunteers The Emporium came into being. We owe our success to the generosity of the community and the hard work of the many donated volunteer hours.

Another factor to our success includes the customers that continue to shop with us.

WCPT and YMCA’s summer partnership

uring the month of June, Whiteside County Public Transportation had the pleasure of working with the YMCA on their Summer Academic Enrichment Program.

WCPT provided rides for 46 children in the community so they could be a part of this wonderful 4-week program.

Students participated at one of three locations in the Sterling area and were instructed by certified staff in reading, math, and asset development. There was no cost to the participants for this

program as it was funded through a grant the YMCA received.

WCPT recently received a comment on its Facebook page that made us extremely proud of the service we provided the participants. A YMCA staff member stated, “One of the greatest things that the Y notices is how caring the drivers are for the kids in our programs! I was able to personally witness this one day when the driver came and all the kids we’re so excited to see him. He greeted each of them by name and gave them high fives

as they made their way onto the vehicle.”

We strive to provide the best service we can and we’re happy to read such a kind comment. We are happy that we were able to transport all of the participants to such a wonderful program and we look forward to next summer!

WCPT and the YMCA will be teaming up once again to transport area students on early-out days throughout the school year. Students that will be attending the YMCA’s early-out program will now have the option of

transportation! This will be a fantastic resource for parents who may otherwise struggle picking their children up early on these specific days.

Parents wishing to have transportation for their students will need to notify the YMCA at least one week in advance from the early-out day. Space will be limited, so parents will want to reserve their spots early!
