another of our popular laughter yoga sessions on the 17th with Home Bound Healthcare. These always are a lot of fun, and this time it will be paired with an ice cream social. That sounds hard to top. Except, maybe, by our annual picnic on the 23rd. Once again, we will be firing up the grill and cooking up burgers and hot dogs to be served with all your favorite fixings.

Naturalist Greg Hunter, from the Dixon Park District, will be here to give a great program, and it will all be followed by an early afternoon of bingo. I hope you can come. The picnic and program are free, but it is always appreciated if you call and let us know you are planning to come.

It helps us to plan how much food to have on hand.

These are just a few of the great events going on in July. Read through this jam-packed issue of the Golden Echo and plan your month, as I don’t have time to list everything.

One thing we won’t be doing this July is presenting our annual Ozark Productions show. After many years of partnering with us for this popular performance, the company has shut down and will not be presenting a show.

However, this important fundraising show will be replaced by another great event later in the year.

Please check and make sure you have renewed your annual membership to the Senior Center, as we want everyone to have a special discount when they participate in our trips and special activities. We don’t charge a fee for every activity; we don’t want to discourage anyone from participating, but we do have to

keep paying the heating and cooling bills, so take time to send your membership fees to us. It is $20 for a single, and $30 for a couple.

For those of you who have tried to call us in the past few months, we want to sincerely apologize if you didn’t reach your party. Evidently, the phone system has been on the blink and sending callers to a variety of extensions or to no extension at all. We know it is frustrating to those who call us for rides or information about our programs when your call doesn’t get through.

Good news! We recently purchased a new phone system, and by the time you read this article our

phone issues should be resolved! We are very excited about the new system, as it will not only connect you to the correct area, but it also will provide some basic information about our operating hours and programs so people can get it without having to wait for someone to answer the phone.

The WCSC and WCPT will have separate automated answering systems which will direct you to the appropriate party without having to wait for someone to transfer your call. Please make a note of these numbers so you can speed up the process of reaching someone: for WCSC, please call

If you happen to dial the wrong number, the automated attendant will provide you with the opportunity to be transferred to the correct one. une has been a blur as we have been busy wrapping up the Annual Fundraising Concert and our 30th Anniversary Open House.

Thank you, again, to everyone who attended these events. We hope you learned something new about the Whiteside County Senior Center.

It was good to see a variety of participants and some former staff who stopped by to check us out! We had many positive comments about

these events and the information everyone received about the programs, activities, and special events we host at the WCSC. Sometimes, I feel like we are one of the best kept secrets in the area, so help us spread the news about everything that is going on at the WCSC. Classroom Foster Grandparents help make a difference

J

oin the 67 Classroom Foster Grandparents counties who assist children who need one-onone guided attention daily in order to reach their grade level academic goals. Foster Grandparents give children the much needed attention that makes a difference in a child’s educational and social growth.

The Foster Grandparents work directly with children who need additional guidance in order to succeed with their academic development. Foster Grandparents help children with pre reading and math skills.

They listen to the children read and discuss what the child has read in order to strengthen reading comprehension and understanding. Grandparents also assist with vocabulary development, spelling word retention, writing, and memorization of math facts. Bilingual Foster

Grandparents even assist Spanish speaking children learn English.

The teachers appreciate the help Foster Grandparents give in the classrooms and view the grandparents as an asset in helping the children learn. Many teachers say they “don’t know what they would do without the grandparent� in their classroom.

Foster Grandparents need to be retired, 55 years old or older, pass a background check, and meet the program income guidelines.

The grandparents receive a state and federal tax free stipend, transportation or transportation reimbursement, a lunch meal while working, sick leave, vacation days, paid holidays, a paid physical, and training.

We here in the kitchen are decorating with red, white and blue.

We have many veterans that come and join us for lunch, and I want to thank them for their service.

We are looking forward to more warm days and cool nights.

Our gardens are in and we look forward to the produce they will provide.

We have our regular bingo, dominoes, hand and foot card games going on along with our crafters to keep our dining room hopping.

uly is a very busy month for us at Lee County Council on Aging, we will be hosting three separate special ITAC Events – Thursday, July 10, Monday, July 21, and Wednesday, July 23.

Our first event is a big one, at noon at LCCOA with for a free lunch sponsored by ITAC. To sign up for this lunch and presentation, call 815-288-9236 and reserve your seat so we are sure to have enough food.

Our second event on July 21 will be at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, 507 Main St. in Steward, and the July 23 event will be at 1 p.m. at the Mills and Petrie Library, 704 First St. in Ashton. For more information, call Samantha at 815-288-9236.

What is ITAC? ITAC stands for the Illinois Telecommunications Access Corporation and is a not-for-profit agency that is funded by an 8 cent tax (as of June 1) on almost all standard landline phone service providers in Illinois. ITAC is required and governed by Illinois law and is available to those individuals of any age or income that has a need for an amplified, CapTel, or TTY phone.

How does LCCOA help get you a phone from

ITAC? LCCOA is your local ITAC Selection Center and is available from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 5 days a week to help you “test” the phones. We do various presentation events throughout the year to help raise awareness on this program and to allow for people to participate in a more convenient location for them. We assist you in making the best phone choice for your particular hearing loss while working with you to “test” each of the four amplified phones and if necessary walking you through how a captioned phone works.

We fill out the application and in many cases are able to get you certified on the spot as having trouble hearing, in instances that don’t allow us to qualify you we are able to give you the part of the application that needs to be completed by a Doctor, Nurse Practitioner, or Audiologist and we have you return it to us when completed.

The whole process takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes and if everything is with you and completed that same day then you will receive a new phone in about 2 weeks.

What information should you bring with you to an ITAC appointment or special event? We ask that you bring your full phone bill and ID or similar proof of residency as both are needed for the application. If you are not sure if you qualify for the program, are paying the 8 cent tax, or just want to learn more, please contact Samantha at 815288-9236. ee County Council on Aging and Whiteside County Senior Center are selection centers for the free amplified telephoneprogram sponsored by the Illinois Telecommunications Access Corporation.

You need to be certified as hard of hearing, be an Illinois resident, and have a landline telephone to qualify for this program.

Please bring your phone bill with all the pages, proof of address (driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s license, state ID, or a bill with your name and address on it) and we will help you with this program.

LCCOA and WCSC have outreach caseworkers who provide Options counseling, Medicare counseling, information and/or assistance to anyone who is 60 or older and persons with disabilities. The caseworkers

are Certified Information and Referral Specialists for Aging (CIRS-A) and Senior Health Insurance Program volunteer counselors. They receive training on a variety of programs and network with several agencies in order to be informed of the options available to their clients. WCSC also offers a monthly Medicare information class.

What is Extra Help?

Dear Marci, I have a Medicare prescription drug plan, but I need additional help paying for my drugs. My friend told me to check if I’m eligible for Extra Help. What is Extra Help?

– Elizabeth, Killington, Vt. Dear Elizabeth, Extra Help is a federal assistance program that helps people with limited finances pay for their Medicare prescription drug costs. Extra Help is administered through the

Social Security Administration), and you must meet federal income and asset requirements to qualify for Extra Help.

Specifically, if you are single and your income is equal to or less than $1,459 in 2014 ($1,966 for couples in 2014), you will likely qualify for Extra Help. Note that you will generally need to meet asset requirements to qualify for Extra Help, as well.

In addition to meeting financial requirements, you need to also have a

Medicare Part D plan, also known as a Medicare prescription drug plan, to qualify for Extra Help.

Remember, you can get Medicare Part D coverage in two different ways. You can get Medicare Part D coverage through either a stand-alone Part D plan that works with Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Plan, also known as a Medicare private health plan that provides you with prescription drug coverage.

Extra Help, know that there are other ways you may be able to save on prescription drug costs.

You may want to see if your state offers a State Pharmaceutical Assistance Program that can help pay for your drug costs. Bear in mind, however, that eligibility requirements and program benefits may vary, depending on the program. Contact your local State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) to see if there is a State Pharmaceutical

Assistance Program available in your state. You can locate the number for your local SHIP by going online and visiting www. shiptalk.org.

You may also want to search for Patient Assistance Programs, which are drug manufacturer programs that offer discounts on certain drugs.

n conjunction with National Infrastructure Week 2014 in mid-May, the American Public Transportation Association released the results of a wide-reaching study of the benefits of public transportation. The report, “The Economic Impact of Public Transportation Investment,” provides compelling support for expanding American public transportation – and Congress should take notice.

Gains in productivity and jobs For the first time in public transpor-

tation research, the new APTA study measured the productivity gains arising from investment in public transportation – and the findings are significant.

Improving mobility through public transportation frees up billions of consumer and business dollars in a number of ways, such as: Lower reliance on automobiles and reduced traffic congestion translate into increased consumer purchasing power of $18.4 billion per year.

Business benefits – including access

to a larger pool of employees via public transportation, reduced road congestion, and streamlined travel logistics – result in $10.1 billion added to the U.S. economy annually.

Productivity gains from public transportation combined with infrastructure investment translate into job growth.

Overall, at current wage rates, an estimated 50,700 jobs are created per $1 billion investment in public transportation. Many jobs are created directly in transportation – in construction

and operations – but more than half, approximately 28,900 jobs, are the result of productivity gains.
