Winners were Charles Rhodenbaugh who won $2350 and Julie Farster, winning $587.50. Of course the real winners are the citizens of Lee County who will benefit from LCCOA’s share of the 50/50 through our

programming.

Another one of my favorite LCCOA events is coming up this month. It’s our fourth annual “Battle of the Brains” Trivia night and it is coming up on the 24th of May. It’s a fun night of you and your team testing your knowledge against other teams and, maybe, winning the prize as the “brainiest” team for this year. Teams consist of up to 6 members. The cost is only $12 each to participate. Get your coworkers, members of an organization, or, maybe, family (yes, family) together and have a fun time. It’s not about how smart you are as much as can one of your team remember some trivial answer, and the fun is in the competition. There will be plenty

of snacks available, and the Post House bar will be open. Spectators are also welcome. The cost to watch is just $3 and that includes the food.

Have you heard of the “Silver Tsunami?” That’s just one of the names given to the phenomenon of the Baby Boomers reaching retirement age and becoming eligible for Medicare. Nationally, over 10,000 people a day right now are turning 65 – the largest number in history.

And we are seeing it here at LCCOA as well. Our Outreach Department reports that nearly every day they are seeing new clients who are inquiring as to their benefits under Medicare and other programs. There is a lot to be learned about Medicare,

and we are here to help, particularly when it comes to the Part D prescription plans. While Medicare holds an “Open Enrollment” period every fall, anyone who is new to the program is urged to find out if they need to enroll or if they might be otherwise covered. We offer free and, importantly, unbiased information and can help navigate the sometimes confusing red tape that come with signing up. If you are within three months of your 65th birthday we urge you to call and set up an appointment with Ruth or Samantha to discuss this important program.

Yes, I have to make one last push for promoting our Annual Fundraising Concert featuring Patty Waszak on Sunday, May 8 at 2:00 p.m. at Centennial Auditorium. This show offers a wide variety of music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, along with com-

edy and audience participation. Patty is a dynamic singer, hilarious comedienne, and a phenomenal musician as she plays more than 30 different instruments. This family oriented show is produced with an emphasis on wholesome and healthy values. Patty says she’s there to “recharge your battery” and she will!

The WCSC Board and staff want to say a special thanks to all of the great volunteers who assist with the Senior Center programs, activities, and special events. In April we honored over 125 volunteers who donated over 15,000 hours of their time to make our programs and activities successful.

The volunteers work anywhere from 8 hours per day to a few hours each year to assist us with reaching out to seniors and others through our Daily Lunch Program, Computer Resource Center, Emporium Thrift Center, Commodities program, receptionist,

preparation of mailings, assistance with our fundraising concert, AARP Tax Advisors, working at Breakfast with Santa and Santa’s Workshop, and many other special events.

Without our volunteers, we couldn’t do everything we do for the residents of Whiteside County! A big THANK YOU to all of the WCSC volunteers for all you do to make the WCSC’s programs, services, and activities successful!!!

Perhaps you are planning a trip, or attending one of the many outdoor events in the area, or just sitting out on your deck, patio or porch enjoying being outside. Whatever your plans, we all feel just a little better having finally put winter behind us.

Also behind us is another great Spring Prom. Once

again our attendance grew this year as more and more people are finding out that Prom is a great experience. It’s wonderful for all of us here to see the generations mingling and having a wonderful time together. A big Thank you to Liberty Court for providing the food, to Red Hot DJ for providing music, Suzanne Paul and Just Cause Photography for pictures and all the staff and volunteers who help make this one of the highlights of our yearly calen-

This year in honor of the 51st anniversary of the Older Americans Act, the ACL is focusing on how older adults are taking charge of their health, engaged in their communities, and making a positive impact in the lives of others. We hope you will join us in making this a month – and year – of action! Come

join us at the WCSC on Thursday, May 26, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. as we celebrate Older Americans Month with a special party! Activities include a variety of games including, Price is Right, short Bingo, and many others.

Getting help in Whiteside

Is There a Cost for Annual Wellness Visit?

The Whiteside County Senior Center (WCSC) Aging and Disabled resource staff will continue to take walk-ins on Monday’s from 9 am – 2 pm if you want to see someone at the senior center. Monday’s are the best time to walk in to get help for the license plate discount, free amplified telephone program, energy assistance, or your homestead exemptions for seniors and people with disabilities. If you want to see someone for Medicare counseling it is by appointment only.

If you to see someone at one of our sites in Morrison, Erie, Prophetstown, or Fulton it is also by appointment only. If you can’t make your appointment it is important that you please call to cancel as soon as possible. If you’re not able to come in on Monday you can call and make an appointment.

Also it is a good idea to call and ask what you need to bring if you are not sure what you will need on walk in day please call 815-6229230 extension 194.

Updates

If you are a filing for the Benefit Access Program for the first time or renewing your application you will need proof of your 2015 income. The Illinois Department on Aging (IDOA) will accept your US 1040 (all pages) and/or tax forms such as W-2 forms, 1099 forms, and SSA-1099 forms are sent out to you in the mail at the beginning of the year. We may also need your Social Security card, driver’s license or State ID, car registration, and possibly other information. IDOA has also reported that there is up to an 8 week processing time and that time frame does not starts from the date the application was

submitted. It starts from the last time information requests are uploaded to the application. This is why it is important that you bring in all the information that the Whiteside County Senior Center caseworkers ask you to bring. Failure to do so will prolong your processing time. If you want to see if you qualify or make sure you have everything we may need to help you file please call 815-622-9230 extension 194.

The Whiteside County Senior Center’s next class on Medicare will be May 13th at 1:30 pm.

This class is designed for those that are becoming new to Medicare and those who want to learn about the options available. Please call ahead of time and sign up 815-622-9230.

If you have Original Medicare, you will pay no coinsurance or deductible for the Annual Wellness Visit and other preventive care services, as long as you see a health care provider who accepts Medicare assignment.

During your Annual Wellness Visit, you will discuss your plan of preventive care for the coming year. This visit is similar to your Welcome to Medicare visit in that it continues to examine your health and update your preventive care plan.

As part of your Annual Wellness Visit, your provider may: Update your healthrisk assessment. Update your medical and family history. Check your weight and blood pressure. Update your list of current medical providers and suppliers. Screen for cognitive issues. Update your screening schedule from previous wellness visits. Update your list of risk factors and conditions and the care that you are receiving or that is recommended. Provide health advice and referrals to health education or preventive counseling programs.

As I mentioned, the Annual Wellness Visit is a Medicare-covered preventive screening, and no cost-sharing applies.

However, if your provider investigates or treats a symptom during your Annual Wellness Visit, this care is not part of the visit, and you may be responsible for certain costs.

Benefit Access Application – License Plate Discount This month our Outreach Department wants to discuss the Benefit Access Application (BAA) for the license plate discount (formerly known as circuit breaker). We have had many people come to us in frustration over the last several months with complaints of all the paperwork they need to bring, additional information requests, the time it takes for an approval, not receiving a discount they thought they should, etc., so we wanted to address these questions/issues with everyone, in hopes of clarifying this program, their changes, and our role in the application process.

During the last few years the Illinois Department on Aging (IDOA) has made several changes to the BAA. These changes include the program running on a two year rotation as opposed to applying every year, as well as the requirement of applying online only. In addition, most of the time they request an upload of your tax docu-

ments or related material.

The paperwork we ask you to bring, is to help ensure we have everything we think that they may ask for, though sometimes they do end up requesting additional paperwork, including but not limited to; death certificate for a spouse, copy of your driver’s license or ID, marriage license, and so forth.

When these things are requested we will contact you and have you bring in the appropriate paperwork for us to upload. Unfortunately, requests for any and all paperwork will be requested (generally) after a period of 48 hours and we have no control over what is required. After paperwork is uploaded it can take an additional 8 – 12 weeks for an application to be approved. We do check on applications ever couple of days so that we stay current with requests and approvals. Even after an approval is made they suggest waiting a period of 10 days before attempting

to receive your discount, to allow time to update the Secretary of State’s system.

The IDOA does NOT send out reminders and therefor it is the responsibility of the applicant to remember to renew their application no earlier than 90 days prior to their expiration date. As a reminder, this is an IDOA program and not a program of LCCOA, we simply handle the application process for you, as one of the many services we provide, therefor we are not able to speed up the process, change what is requested, or alter an application once submitted.

With the application running on a two year cycle it means that you will have two discounts to use in this time frame. If you have made a request from the Secretary of State’s office for a reimbursement after the month in which your sticker was due, and have been approved, then you will be denied a discount at a future date and will be in the same position again.

If you have trouble hearing on the phone Illinois has a program to help you.

The program provides free amplified telephones or a captioning telephone to Illinois residents that are hard of hearing. It is sponsored by the Illinois Telecommunications Access Corporation (ITAC). You

will have to be certified as hard of hearing, live in Illinois, and have a landline telephone service that qualifies you for this program. Lee County Council on Aging (LCCOA) and Whiteside County Senior Center (WCSC) are selection centers for ITAC. You may call the WCSC 815-

President Barack Obama addressing Older Americans Month A Proclamation In America, every person who is willing to work hard and play by the rules should be able to build a life of opportunity and prosperity. We learned this simple truth from our oldest generation – the women and men who relentlessly pursued progress throughout the 20th century. Drivers of enormous change, they have enriched our Nation and bravely defended the values we cherish; they have broken down barriers and blazed pathways for all who followed; and they have raised us all and endowed us with a freer, fairer, more equal world.

After a lifetime of contributions, they have earned our care and respect, and they deserve to live out their years with dignity and independence. Our Nation is strongest when older Americans live comfortably in their golden years and have the opportunity to continue to contribute to the fabric of the country

and society they helped to shape. This month, we celebrate the accomplishments and sacrifices of our elders, and we reaffirm our belief that the promise of our Nation extends to Americans of all ages.

The United States is entering a new era, and the face of our Nation is growing older and more diverse. For the next 15 years, thousands of Americans will reach retirement age every day, and by 2030, there will be more than twice as many older Americans as there were at the beginning of this century.

This growing population is a tremendous national asset. By changing the way we think and talk about aging – by focusing on the opportunities of aging rather than the limitations – we can work to maximize the potential of this generation and ensure they continue to thrive as they age.

To address the changing landscape of aging and advance policies that

help older Americans pursue their fullest measure of happiness, this summer my Administration will host the 2015 White House Conference on Aging. By connecting older Americans, their families, caregivers, advocates, community leaders, and experts, the Conference is an important chance to continue our efforts to safeguard retirement security, promote healthy aging, provide long-term services and support, and protect older Americans from abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation.

This year also marks the 50th anniversary of Medicare, Medicaid, and the Older Americans Act, as well as the 80th anniversary of Social Security.

For decades, these landmark achievements have stood as pillars of economic opportunity for millions of Americans and reflected the promise we make to our seniors. As President, I have worked tirelessly

Throughout the last half-century, the Older Americans Act has empowered older Americans by upholding their rights and supporting social and nutrition services, as well as a nationwide network of employment, training, and research programs.

These vital services help millions of seniors across our Nation. I am also proud of the progress we have made during my Administration to improve Medicare, which provides essential health care and security for older Americans. And I am committed to further strengthening Medicare by bolstering access to care for beneficiaries, encouraging better outcomes, and improving long-term sustainability.

Social Security is one of the most important and successful programs ever established in the United States, and we must make certain it is solvent and via-

ble for the American people, now and in the future.

I am fighting to ensure any reforms will protect retirement security for the most vulnerable, including lowincome seniors, and maintain the robust disability and survivors’ benefits that help families after they have paid into the system.

To build on this legacy, I started the myRA program, a new type of savings account that provides additional pathways for Americans to build their nest egg, and I have called for new rules to require financial advisors to put their clients’ interests before their own -- ensuring all who responsibly prepare for retirement receive the best advice possible.

Our elders forged a bright future for all our Nation’s children, and they deserve the best America has to offer. As heirs to their proud legacy, we must reach for the world they have made possible.

During Older Americans Month, we lift up all those

Toast to Transit Sponsorship Whiteside County Public Transportation is once again beginning to plan the Toast to Transit – Wine Tasting Fundraiser, a very special event to raise $5,000 to help our transit system. The 3rd annual Toast to Transit will be held on August 6th, 2016 at the Barn at Allen Acres in Rock Falls.

Toast to Transit’s goal is to raise funds to assist with keeping our wheels turning to continue to provide vital transit services to members of our community. Our services allow young adults to achieve their dreams of obtaining a college education, parents are able to maintain

employment and provide for their families, seniors are able to get to needed medical appointments, and so much more!

We are hoping this year’s event will be a tremendous success, raising $5,000 for our public transportation system, which provides rides to residents of ALL ages throughout Whiteside County.

We hope area businesses will join us in making a difference for our community by supporting our cause through a donation, as a table sponsor for our event. This would be a wonderful addition to the event and would help us get closer to meeting our goal.
