By Geoff Vanderlin Spring has sprung! At least I hope so. While this winter was not as bad as last year, we had plenty of cold weather in the last part of it – and that one REALLY BAD snow storm!

But all that is behind us now and we can look forward to several months of warm, sometimes hot, weather. Maybe it’s the warmer weather, or maybe it’s the great food, but I am so gratified at the huge number of you who came out a couple of weeks ago for our annual

chili and soup fundraiser. Thank you so much!

Spring is also prom season! Lee County Council on Aging’s spring prom is only a couple of weeks away, on April 11, and the response this year has been great. We’re expecting more people than ever to attend, and a record seven candidates are vying for the title of prom queen this year (plus two for king)! Your monetary vote can be dropped off at the

Senior Center or, better yet, you can vote at the prom, and on April 11, the man and woman with the most money will be declared king and queen.

By Doug Vandersee Spring is around the corner and the snow has finally disappeared. The weather is warming up and things are coming back to life after a long, cold winter. April is a great time as our mind senses it is time for everything to start growing again and our energy level increases as we enjoy the warmth of the sun and the extended daylight hours that allow us to get out and get active again!

The WCSC staff is always looking for new opportunities to get more of our

older, active adults out of their winter routines and out of their homes so they can enjoy themselves by spending time doing fun activities with those they enjoy. Learning new or relearning old activities is a great way to energize yourself, as being around other energetic people can be contagious.

We are offering several new activities in April including Canasta, Scrabble, chair exercises and the Ron Wolber Memorial Euchre Tournament. We have several educational

It’s because we need the community’s financial assistance to keep our programs running, and to keep expanding our programs to meet the needs of the community. Operating a non-profit charitable organization is always a challenge, but we enjoy it, or we wouldn’t be here every day working for the people who need our assistance! We know we are making a difference in people’s lives as we hear lots of thank-you’s from those we have helped,

and they keep referring their family and friends to us for help with their life issues!

Notes from the kitchen It looks as though we can feel and hear spring in the air. The snow has melted, temperatures are rising, and the birds are singing sweet melodies on our windows.

Spring, more than New Year’s Day, brings a chance for new beginnings, new friendships, and new hopes. The old washes away and the year’s new beauty has begun.

Free phone testing available locally If you have trouble hearing on the phone, Illinois has a program to help.

The program provides free amplified telephones or a captioning telephone to Illinois residents who are hard of hearing. It is sponsored by the Illinois Telecommunications Access Corporation (ITAC). You will have to be certified as hard of hearing, live in Illinois, and have a landline telephone service that qualifies you for this program.

Lee County Council on Aging (LCCOA) and Whiteside County Senior Center (WCSC) are selection centers for ITAC. You may call the WCSC 815-622-9230 or 815288-9236 in advance to set up an appointment to see if you qualify for this wonderful program.

To apply we will need your phone bill with all the pages, and proof of address (driver’s license, state ID, or a bill with your name and address on it).

Wanted: Old phones, iPods and iPads

Help is just a phone call away Phones available for people with trouble hearing Join LCCOA any time between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 1, for an Open Testing Event of the Illinois Telecommunications Access Corporation (ITAC). ITAC is a notfor-profit agency housed out of Springfield with various testing centers throughout Illinois, such as LCCOA. As a testing center we can provide Free, Ampli-

fied, CapTel and TTY phones to individuals of any age and any income who have a genuine need for such a device.

To qualify for a phone you must have a standard landline phone service (Frontier, Century Link, Comcast, etc.), be a resident of Illinois, and be hard of hearing on a phone. Phones are offered free due to a tax that you are already paying on your phone bill; the tax stabilizes this program, allowing you to receive a phone at no additional cost.

Testing the phones takes only, on average, about 20 minutes from start to finish. To test the phones we simply have you use the phone to talk to us, you make adjustments until you can comfortably hear and understand what we are saying. Next, we go over the four choices and help you choose the phone that will work best for you.

If you are planning on attending this Open Testing Event please bring a copy of your full phone bill and your driver’s license or ID, and we

How can I appeal a Medicare denial?

Dear Marci, Last month I had to go to the hospital and I called an ambulance to take me there. I got my Medicare Summary Notice for that time period, and I saw that Medicare denied payment for the ambulance ride. I think that Medicare should pay for my ambulance trip. Is there anything I can do to get Medicare to pay for the service?

– Jennifer (Towson, Maryland) Dear Jennifer, Yes, you have the right

to appeal Medicare’s denial of your ambulance trip.

Generally, Medicare beneficiaries have the right to appeal if Medicare denies payment for a health care service or item. If the ambulance trip was medically necessary and was the only safe way to get you to the hospital in your condition, Medicare should cover your trip.

The steps to appeal the decision are listed on your Medicare Summary Notice (MSN). If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, the denial and

appeal information will be listed in your Explanation of Benefits (EOB) notice.

Remember, if you have Original Medicare, you will receive a Medicare Summary Notice (MSN) every 3 months detailing the health care services you have received, what Medicare paid for these services, and what you may owe.

Read your MSN carefully each time you receive it to check if Medicare has denied payment for any services. If Medicare denies a service, it will be clearly

listed on your MSN. The last page of your Medicare Summary Notice will detail the steps to take to file an appeal. If you are confused or unsure of what to do, you can call 1-800-MEDICARe (1-800-633-4227) or your provider for help. In order for your appeal to be considered, Medicare must receive the appeal within 120 days of the date on your MSN. This date appears in the box on the last page of your MSN. Keep in mind it is important to include relevant medical records

and a doctor’s letter of support in any appeal.

Know that there is more than one level of appeal, and you can continue appealing if you are not successful at the first level of appeal.

Make sure that you follow the rules outlined in the appeals process, and that you keep to the time frame for submitting appeals.

If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, your Explanation of Benefits notice (EOB) will list the health care services you have received over a period of time, similar

to the MSN. If your plan is denying a service, this information will be listed in your EOB. Your plan will also send you a separate notice, the Notice of Denial of Payment, stating that a service was denied. The notice will give more instructions about appealing your plan’s decision.

AARP sets its sites on tax help Welcome to our AARP Foundation Tax-Aide sites. Our sites are staffed with AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers who have been trained and certified by the IRS to prepare a range of individual income tax returns. Please take a moment to read the following information to ensure a smooth process for both you and the volunteers at our sites.

• Please do not ask that a volunteer make any exceptions in your case.

• If you have questions that we cannot answer, you may need to consult a paid tax professional.

The following appointment schedule rules are in place for sites that require an appointment.

• If you can’t make your appointment, you need to call to inform us as soon as you know.

• Our appointments are set up to handle one return per appointment.

• You are responsible for the accuracy of your return.

• You are to ensure the return is complete and accurate before you sign the Form 8879.

Once your return is prepared it will be given a quality review by a second trained and certified volunteer in order to help ensure that it is thorough and accurate. This quality review service is done for your benefit to ensure that you receive the best service that we can provide.

You can expect our volunteers to treat you in a courteous and professional manner. In return,

our volunteers expect you to treat them with courtesy as well.

Spring Prom in the Post House ballroom You can cast your votes for king and queen Stop in at the Lee County Council on Aging Senior Center and vote for your prom king and queen. Each nominated king and queen has a voting box at the Senior Center. Votes totals are based on the dollar amount (“votes”) each candidate receives. The person with the most votes wins and will be crowned at the

spring prom on April 11.

All money received will help support programs at the Lee County Council on Aging.

Tickets to the prom are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.

The prom will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 11, Post House Ballroom.

Entertainment at the prom will be provided

by Super Red Hot DJ, who will play all the hits for prom-goers’ dancing pleasure.

What’s going on in the ADRC this month?

What is an ADRC? LCCOA and WCSC are Aging and Disabled Resource Centers (ADRC). We have Certified Information and Referral Specialists for Aging (CIRSA) and Senior Health Insurance Program volunteer counselors. We provide Options counseling, Medicare counseling, information and assistance to anyone who is 60 or older and persons with disabilities.

We receive training on a variety of programs and network with several agencies in order to be informed of the options available in our community.

Are you living on a fixed social security and/or retirement income and having trouble getting by? Is your Medicare coverage confusing? Are you turning 65 and not sure what to do next? If you can answer yes to any of these questions we may be able to help you.

This month, ADRC staff members are continuing to renew applications for the Benefits Access Program, the

Senior Citizens Homestead Exemption (PTAX-329), and Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze (PTAX-340). If you don’t file taxes we still need the tax forms they mailed you in January showing your income for 2014. These financial papers are very important. Tax documents are financial papers, for example: SSA-1099, 1099-R, W-2, 1099-I, 1099-DIV, 1099G, etc. These types of documents should be kept in a safe place and you should keep them for the minimum of 3 years. The best practice would be keep them for 10 years.

Transportation Agencies schedule visits to reach out to area passengers The Lee County Council on Aging continues to be a supporter, provider, and operator for the Lee-Ogle Transportation System, not only for the senior population they once facilitated, but also for the general public’s needs. As partners, both agencies continue to support each other. One specific department within Lee County Council on Aging is the Outreach Department. As many of you know, LCCOA Outreach staff member Ruth and Samantha visit sites all over Lee County for those members who cannot make it into the Senior Center in Dixon.

The days, times and locations of Ruth and Samantha’s upcoming visits are: • Paw Paw Community Building: first Thursday of every month from 10-11 a.m.

• Ashton Library: second Monday of the month from 1-2 p.m.

• Franklin Grove Library: second Monday of the month from 2:30-3:30 p.m.

• Amboy Community Center: third Wednesday of the month from 10-11 a.m.

• Sublette Community Center: third Wednesday of the month 11:30 a.m.

-12:30 p.m.

It is important that the Lee-Ogle Transportation System supports the Outreach Department to provide transportation, either to the Senior Center or any of these site visits!

Sheriff Kelly Wilhelmi and States Attorney Trish Joyce will give a presentation: “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Scams, But Were Afraid to Ask.” The discussion will cover common fraud schemes, including telemarketing fraud, investment-related schemes, internet scams, identity theft, and fraud specifically targeting seniors. We will also offer tips for avoiding scams. The first 50 people to attend will receive a free box of Girl Scout cookies!

CUB phone bill clinic at LCCOA 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 7

Attendees can bring their phone bills in for a free analysis by experts from the Citizens’ Utility Board, which will give people tips on how to cut their bills. At clinics across Illinois, CUB has shown consumers how to trim their bills by an average of more than $200 a year by dropping unnecessary services. Medicare Information Class at Whiteside County Senior Center 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 10

The basic information we provide will help people new to Medicare, or those who just want more information make a more informed decision when it comes to their options with Medicare. Our Outreach Department staff member are trained Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) volunteer counselors. SHIP is a free counseling service provided by the Illinois Department of Insurance.
