Reunion Leaf River High School 41st Alumni Event The Leaf River High School 41st Alumni Event will be March 7, honoring the Class of 1965. The doors open at 4:30 p.m., followed by a sandwich supper from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at River Valley Complex, 605 Main St., Leaf River. Volleyball will start at 5 p.m., the program at 6:30, and the basketball game at 7. The alumni band also will perform. Members of the Class of 1965 get in free; volleyball players and basketball players pay $1. Setup time is 6:30 p.m. Friday. Volunteers are needed to help. Valerie and Ryan Simon were married Sept. 13, 2014, at White Deer Run in Vernon Hills. The matron of honor was Sara Petersen. The bridesmaids were Jade Huber, Chrissy Tluczek, Ashley Bartlow, and Emily Simon. The best man was Nick Shoger. The groomsmen were Zach Arquilla, Mark Bennecke, Ryan Arquilla, and Sean Thivener. The bride graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Illinois University and currently is obtaining her certification in office management, while working as a nanny for a local family. The groom is a graduate of Capital University Law School and has been admitted to the Illinois Bar. The couple honeymooned in Punta Cana, and make their home in Carpentersville.

Mr. and Mrs. George Howard “Bud” Thompson will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary March 4, 2015. A family celebration is being planned. 70th Anniversary Mr. & Mrs. Bob Yarbrough Mr. and Mrs. Bob Yarbrough of Morrison celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary March 2, 2015. A family celebration is being planned for this summer. Bob Yarbrough of Morrison and Pearl Housenga of Fulton were married March 2, 1945, at the parsonage of the Christian Reformed Church in Fulton. Dr. James Putt officiated. Their attendants were Elsie (Blink) Holesinger and the late Floyd Holesinger. Bob served with the U.S. Navy during World War II, as an electrician mate in the submarine service. The couple then owned

and operated Yarbrough Electric in Morrison, until retiring in 1988. They are the parents of three children, Jan (Arnie) Drolema and Deb (Pete) Swearingen, both of Morrison; and Mark (Becky Berning) Yarbrough of Galena. They have five grandchildren, Mitch (Myriah) Drolema, Andy VanOsdol, Adam (Ann Hinrichs) Swearingen, Jacob (Georgia Foltz) Yarbrough, and Emy Yarbrough; and seven great-grandchildren, Schyon, Skylar, Taylor, Ella, Johnathan, Robert, and Millie. Bob has taught and coached at Sterling High School for 43 years, and Kim works at Jefferson Elementary. They are the parents of Ryan (Lisa) of Elmhurst, Lindsay of Addison, and Allison of Naperville. They have one grandson, Dylan DaWayne.

102nd Birthday

Sterling native turns 102 Roy A. Hess, born to Charles and Essie (Landis) Hess, will celebrate his 102nd birthday March 7, 2015. Born in Sterling, he was raised on a farm north of town. After Sterling High School graduation, he worked at Lawrence Brothers for 4 years. After graduating from Wheaton College in 1939, with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, Roy married Gladys Witmer, also of Sterling, in 1940. They were married more than 68 years until 2009, when Gladys passed away. Their union has been blessed with six children, 17 grandchildren, and 42 great-grandchildren. Before moving back to Ster-

ling to run the family farm for 16 years, Roy worked as a chemist for 5 years in the Chicago area. He then worked well into his 80s for New York Life Insurance Co. He is a member of Faith Baptist Church in Sterling and a member of Gideonâ€™s International since 1972. In 2010, he was honored by Wheaton College for being their oldest living wrestling alumnus, having been team captain during his senior year.
