mate I’m sure you have read how many social service programs are being cut, so your support means more to us than ever. If you are not able to attend, I ask that you consider paying for the tickets anyway so that someone less fortunate is able to come. Thanks.

This year LCCOA again will participate in the Illinois Senior Spelling Bee Program. Seniors 50 and over (seniors?) are eligible to compete in local and regional bees around the state, culminating with the crowning of the state champion speller at the state fair in August. Our local bee will take place Saturday, March 21.

This year, thanks to a generous sponsor, we will

offer a $75 prize to the winner of our local competition, who will also have the opportunity to compete in the regional bee. Our second-place winner will receive $50.

As I said, this competition is open to anyone 50 and over. If you would like to compete, please contact us before the date and register. If you’d like a little early practice, we will be holding another of our practice bees at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 11. Just show up and have some fun.

The March calendar is full of great events, and I hope you read about them in this copy of the Echo; but right now, I’d like to jump the calendar forward a bit and tell you

about a just announced special event that we will be a part of. On July 24, LCCOA, along with our good friends from the ARC of Lee County, will host a great Drum and Bugle Corps show at Dixon High School as a fundraiser for both agencies.

Drum Corps shows have been an important part of Dixon summers since at least the early 1960s, and we are thrilled to be putting this great show on. If you have been to shows in the past, or are newly curious, be sure to mark this date on your calendar so you’ll be sure not to miss it.

If you were a ticket holder or sponsor for last year’s concert you should receive a letter or phone call shortly asking if you want to renew your commitment for tickets or a sponsorship. If you haven’t heard from us or didn’t purchase tickets or a sponsorship last year and would like to purchase tickets or be a sponsor, call us at 815-622-9230 or 888622-9230 and we will be glad to explain the many options, available tickets and a sponsorship.

We greatly appreciate everyone’s patience as we are constantly learning new things about concert promoting and ticketing on a daily basis. We will have newspaper ads and radio spots coming out in

March, so look for them as they will have these phone numbers also.

The concert is WCSC’s major fundraising event of the year and we appreciate the great support the local communities have provided through the years. If you cannot attend the concert and would like to help the WCSC, please feel free to make a general donation.

All proceeds from the concert and donations to WCSC go to support the programs, activities and services we provide to the senior citizens in our area! All general donations are tax deductible! Though the sun tells us that spring begins on March 21, the meteorologists have been telling us for several years now that based on wind and other patterns spring actually begins around March 1. I like their view better this time of year. How about you? (They also tell us winter begins Dec. 1, so I guess we can’t have it both ways; but right now December is a long way off) Before we completely

say good-bye to cold weather we have one more cozy event for you this month. March 18 is the date for our 25th annual chili and soup supper. That’s right – 25th annual! It’s hard to believe.

Come up to the beautiful Post House Ballroom and enjoy some of our delicious chili or creamy chicken soup. You’ll also get something to drink and a dessert with your ticket. (And, for those

interested in something stronger, the Post House bar will be open for cash purchases.)

LCCOA members will receive their tickets in the mail this week. Please be generous about purchasing them, as they help us keep the doors open and our services available to anyone who needs them.

LCCOA’s annual Spring Prom is Saturday, April 11, at the Post House Ballroom. This prom is for ages 21 up to 121. We invite you to come enjoy a night of dancing. Tick-

ets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. The ticket price includes snacks, grand march, music by Super Red Hot Karaoke, and much more.

We had a great turnout as LCCOA co-sponsored the monthly Paw Paw Senior bingo on Feb. 11. We discussed services and programs that LCCOA offers and took suggestions for programs and activities people would like to see brought to the Paw Paw area. Prizes were won and a good time was had by all! Thank you to all who helped make this possible and for allowing us to come in and join your bingo event.

How does Medicare cover vaccines?

Dear Marci, I got a pamphlet from my doctor’s office reminding me to get all necessary vaccines. I want to talk to my doctor about getting these vaccines, but I’m not sure how Medicare will cover them. How does Medicare cover vaccines?

– Eddie (Denver) Dear Eddie, Medicare covers vaccines differently depending on which vaccine you need. Most vaccines are covered under Part D, but some are covered under Part B. Different costs apply to vaccines depending on how they are covered.

Medicare Part B covers vaccines if you have been exposed to a dangerous disease. For example, if you step on a rusty nail, Medicare will cover a tetanus shot. Additionally, Medicare Part B covers the influenza, pneumonia and Hepatitis B vaccines as preventive services.

These vaccines are covered by Part B if you have Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan.

If you receive a Part B-covered vaccine after exposure to a dangerous

disease, you will pay the normal cost sharing for Part B services. If you have Original Medicare, Medicare will cover 80 percent of the cost, and you or your supplemental insurance will be responsible for 20 percent once you have met your Part B deductible.

If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, you typically will pay a copay for this service. Contact your Medicare Advantage plan directly to ask about specific vaccine costs.

If you receive one of the three preventive vaccines

covered under Part B, Original Medicare will cover the costs with no coinsurance or deductible, as long as you see a provider that accepts Medicare assignments. A Medicare Advantage plan will cover the costs with no co-insurance, copays or deductibles as long as you see an in-network provider.

All other vaccines are covered by Medicare Part D. Both Medicare Advantage prescription drug plans and standalone Part D plans must include all commercially

available vaccines on their drug formularies, including the vaccine for shingles (herpes zoster).

However, for these vaccines covered by Part D, you may pay different amounts depending on where you get vaccinated. Check directly with your plan for coverage rules and costs.

In general, you will pay the least for a Part D-covered vaccine if you receive the shot at a pharmacy that is in your plan’s network, or at a doctor’s office that will bill your Part D plan directly for

the cost of the vaccination process. When you are at your doctor’s office, ask your doctor to call your Part D plan first to find out if there is a way that your doctor can bill your plan for the vaccine.

There may be a way for the doctor to submit the bill so that you will not have to pay the whole cost up front.

If your doctor cannot submit the bill for the vaccine to your Part D plan through a partnering pharmacy, or cannot directly bill the plan for the drug, you may need

to pay more for your vaccination. If this happens, your doctor will bill you for the entire cost of the vaccine, and you will have to pay the cost up front. Then you will have to follow your Part D plan’s rules to get a refund. Know that your doctor has no limit on how much they can charge you for the vaccine, but your Part D plan will pay only its approved amount for payment. You will be responsible for the difference between the doctor’s charge and the plan’s approved payment amount.

If you have Extra Help, the federal benefit that helps people with low incomes pay for their prescription drugs, you can go to any doctor or in-network pharmacy for a vaccine. You will be covered for the vaccination and will be responsible only for the Extra Help copay.

How do you spell fun? Try B-E-E Show off your spelling talents at a Senior Spelling Bee. It’s a fun and brain-healthy activity, and it’s free!

The State Senior Spelling Bee competition is an exciting statewide program that provides adults age 50 and older the opportunity to showcase a lifetime of knowledge

and to celebrate years of experience through spelling abilities. The program is coordinated by the Association of Illinois Senior Centers with the help of the Illinois Department on Aging.

The competition includes three levels of competition: local, regional, and finals.

Local bees will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 21, at the Lee County Council on Aging in Dixon; and at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 7 at the Whiteside County Senior Center in Sterling.

The regional spelling bee location will be announced the middle of March.

The finals will be at 1

p.m. Monday, Aug. 10, during Senior Day in the Illinois Building Auditorium at the state fair.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide sites are staffed with volunteers who have been trained and are certified by the IRS to prepare a range of individual income tax returns. Lindsay Anderson, one of our ADRC (Aging and Disability Resource Centers) representatives and a SHIP (Senior Health Insurance Program) adviser, was surprised by two baby showers on Friday, Jan. 30, and Thursday, Feb. 12, one by line dancers and one by employees and volunteers.

The line dancers at Whiteside County Senior Center surprised Lindsay on Jan. 30. She received many nice gifts and a great lunch was served. Her husband and mother-in-law also came. What a nice surprise!

Bill Schell was crowned King and Mary Nasluchacz was crowned Queen at the Whiteside County Senior Center on Friday, Feb. 13. They were really surprised.

It’s music for a Corps audience Petunia City Brass brings drum and bugle corps to Dixon Mark your calendar for Friday, July 24. On that night, the Lee County Council on Aging and the Arc of Lee County will sponsor a Drum Corps International Open Class Drum and Bugle Corps competition at Dixon High School.

This event, coming just 2 weeks before the Corps World Championships, is called “Petunia City Brass” and it will find the corps in top form and promises to be a great event.

Scheduled to appear are The Vanguard Cadets from Santa Clara California, making their first appearance in Dixon.

Also appearing are Genesis, from Austin, Texas, (which placed third last year); The Colt Cadets from Dubuque, Iowa, (10th place); and the Racine Scouts from Wisconsin.

We’re also pleased to bring to town a leading corps from Drum Corps Europe: Jubal, from Dordrecht, Holland. Jubal has won many European championships and tours the U.S. every few years, competing in Drum Corps International world championships. At 104 years old, Jubal claims to be the oldest preforming drum and bugle corps in the world.

At 104, the group is as old as the beautiful building which houses both Lee County Council on Aging

and the Post House Ballroom! The last group performing in competition is Shadow Armada band from Oregon, Wisconsin, a three-time Mid-America Competing Band Directors Association (MACBMA) champion .

MACBMA units use slightly different instrumentation than a strict drum and bugle corps, but their shows are very similar. You don’t want to miss this exciting night as Drum Corps, which has a long and storied history in Dixon, dating back at least to the 1960s, returns to Dixon on July 24.

What’s going on in the ADRC this month?

What is an ADRC? LCCOA and WCSC are Aging and Disabled Resource Centers. We have Certified Information and Referral Specialists for Aging (CIRS-A) and Senior Health Insurance Program volunteer counselors.

We provide Options counseling, Medicare counseling, information, and assistance to anyone 60 or older and people with disabilities.

We receive training on a variety of programs and we network with several agencies in order to be informed of the options in our community.

Are you living on a fixed social security and/or retirement income and having trouble getting by? Is your Medicare coverage confusing? Are you turning 65 and not sure what to do next? If you can answer yes to any of these questions, we may be able to help you.

This month ADRC staff members are continuing to renew applications for the Benefits Access Program. The program provides a license plate discount for people with disabilities and seniors 65 years and older.

Income limits apply.

The program has to be

renewed every 2 year and applicants can reapply 90 days before their expiration date.

The Senior Citizens Homestead Exemption (PTAX-329) and Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze (PTAX-340) renewals went out in the mail in February. What help do these applications provide? The Senior Citizens Homestead Exemption provides a $5,000 reduction on your equalized assess value (EAV) for your property. Your property taxes are assessed from your EAV. The Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze helps freeze

your EAV on your property for the taxable year you first become eligible. The income limit is $55,000 gross taxable income per year for the household.

You have to be 65 years old to apply for the Senior Citizens Homestead Exemption and Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze. Utilizing exemptions for which you are eligible and applying for the Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze helps lower property taxes in many cases, so take advantage of them.

We help fill out these applications and also notarize them as well.

We will need your 2014 gross taxable income to complete the Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze (PTAX-340). If you file income taxes you will need to have those completed first. If you don’t file taxes we still need the tax forms mailed to you in January showing your income for 2014.

Financial papers that report your income are very important. Tax documents are financial papers. If you receive papers that have SSA1099, 1099-R, W-2, 1099I, 1099-DIV, 1099-G, etc., these types of documents should be kept in a safe

place and you should keep them for the minimum of 3 years. The best practice would be keep them for 10 years.

Give us a call and set up an appointment if you would like help from the WCSC and LCCOA Outreach staff. The WCSC offers a basic Medicare information class. WCSC and LCCOA Outreach staff travels to several locations each month in Lee and Whiteside counties.

Since 2012, our program has grown by 30 percent and this fiscal year alone we have had a 13 percent increase in ridership.

We are happy that our community members are aware that WCPT offers public transportation for residents of all ages throughout ALL of Whiteside County. Laughter Yoga, presented by Homebound Healthcare, is a gentle, feel-good event for all ages and abilities. It combines unconditional laughter with yogic breathing.
