3+1 adds up to more flexibility for students Sauk, NIU sign partnership deals BY JERMAINE PIGEE

DIXON – Technology students at Sauk Valley Community College can now earn a bachelor’s degree from Northern Illinois University without stepping foot on the DeKalb campus. Sauk students who find themselves out of the area also can finish their associate’s degree at the DeKalb campus. Officials from Sauk and NIU came together Tuesday afternoon to sign two agreements that provide such flexibility for their students. One is a reverse transfer agreement that allows students who transfer from Sauk to NIU without having earned their 2-year associate’s degree to finish up there. The other agreement, called 3+1, allows manu-

facturing and technology students to get their 4-year bachelor’s degree from NIU without even stepping foot on the DeKalb campus. The agreements were signed at Sauk by NIU President Doug Baker and Sauk President Dave Hellmich. They take effect immediately. “We hope these agreements are just the beginning of a new partnership between Sauk and Northern,” Hellmich said. Through 3+1, Sauk students can take 60 hours of classes, and earn a technical associate of applied science degree. To get their bachelor of science degree in technology, with an emphasis in applied manufacturing technology, they then must take 30 hours of general education or BS prerequisites, plus 30 hours of NIU technology courses. Those last 10 classes, NIU’s College of Engi-

neering and Engineering Technology, now can be taken online. “This is a wonderful opportunity for tech students to get their associate degree and further their education,” said Steve McPherson, associate professor of technology and electronics at Sauk. “It’s also an excellent opportunity for industry as a whole to develop a more educated workforce with a more complete skill set.” Taking those extra steps to obtain a bachelor’s in the field will benefit students, Baker said. “You learn a lot in the programs and a lot of really important stuff,” Baker said. “Getting a bachelor’s degree opens a whole bunch of additional doors. I think it shows our regional business community the willingness of higher education to collaborate.” Under the reverse transfer agreement, credits earned in any

department at NIU can transfer to Sauk, to meet the degree requirements for an associate’s degree, just like Sauk credits transfer to the NIU, but in reverse. Sauk is the 11th Illinois community college to partner in this way with NIU. “This project is a winwin, with no cost to students and minimal cost to institutions,” said Jerry Montag, NIU director of records and registration. “Sauk benefits from the increase in completions and student success, and NIU benefits from its strengthened relationship and communication with its community college partners.” Baker hopes both

A rural rainbow Sauk Valley woman helps county get squared away with its colorful side BY LONNIE C. MILLER Special to Sauk Valley Media

SAVANNA – When a Carroll County woman took on the job of documenting her county’s barn quilts, it was no small task, but she had to start somewhere. And that’s just what Connie Zink did – at square one. Since then, she’s helped gather information on the county’s quilts, and there’s quite a few – about six dozen different quilts are featured on the Barn Quilts of Carroll County page at visitcarrollcountyil.com (select “barn quilt trail” from the “virtual tours” button on the left). But the quilt project isn’t done yet. Zink is looking for the public’s help to wrap up the quilt project. In the meantime, people can check out the quilts online or take a day trip through the county to see the other colors of fall – a cornucopia of color hanging high, and low. There are big ones on barns and little ones on mailboxes. Some salute a favorite sports team, and some salute America. But most of all, they’re just darn colorful. It’s a project that county ag and tourism groups hope will not only celebrate the county’s heritage and its residents’ creativity, but attract tourists, too. Who needs the bridges of Madison County when you’ve got the quilts of Carroll County? Barn quilts aren’t really quilts at all, at least not the kind you cover up with. They’re made of wood or metal, and most often are one large square, although sometimes – like their cloth cousins – they can be made up of colorful pieces that are assembled into a larger quilt. They can be freestanding, but are usually hung on a barn or other outbuilding. Sometimes they just dress up a building, but other times they can represent something special to the family. The Carroll County Motel and Hotel Tax Board and members of the county’s Farm Bureau tapped Zink to take on the trail project, the goal of which is to locate, document, and map the barn quilts – and in the pro-

Connie’s keeping plenty busy, but she can’t do it all alone. She needs the public’s help to complete the massive project. She’s taken more 200 photos and traveled all over Carroll County, gathering information on barn quilts, but she knows there are more out there. Got a quilt that’s not on the list? Let her know. And if you’re already on the list, she asks simply that you verify the information. Don’t have a quilt at all, but would like information on how to be a part of trail? Let her know, or you can research barn quilts online to make one of your own, or find a business that sells them. The project’s Facebook page also lists people in Carroll County who make them. And if you have a quilt that’s on the list, but would rather not have it there, that’s OK, too. Just let her know. What’s come to be known as The American Quilt Trail Movement is credited to Donna Sue Groves, an Ohio woman who wanted to honor her mother, a noted quilter, with a painted quilt square on the family’s barn in Manchester, Ohio. Groves eventually contributed to a book, “Barn Quilts and the American Quilt Trail Movement,” written by Suzi Parron, and a national quilt trail movement has unfurled across America. While there’s no book in Carroll County’s future right now, organizers have a brochure, and plan to create a printed map, in addition to the website and Facebook page.

Samples set for safety, potency tests UIC obtains OK to move forward CHICAGO (AP) – Another important element is falling into place for Illinois residents to begin using medical marijuana: A lab at University of Illinois at Chicago has obtained state approval to conduct safety and potency testing. Though a second approved Chicagoarea lab has lost its funding because of the pilot program’s low patient count, UIC lab director Karl Larsen said Tuesday his lab is ready to start testing marijuana samples for harmful substances on the plants as well as drug potency. Until now, the lab has focused on testing racehorses for performanceenhancing drugs, and Larsen hopes revenue from marijuana testing will make up for a decline in lab fees from horse racing in the state, he said. “We thought it would be a good field for us to help ensure when people get medical marijuana, they’ll have a good product and a safe product,” Larsen said. UIC will test marijuana for harmful microbes, poisons from fungus, pesticides and solvents – all according to standards spelled out in state regulations, which are more rigid than those on the books in other states but match the industry’s highest voluntary standards, experts said. Retail sales of medical marijuana are expected to begin in state-licensed dispensaries by early November. “Sales will begin after cultivation cen-

ters are given the opportunity to test medical cannabis products with a lab approved by the Department of Agriculture,” Joseph Wright, director of the state’s medical cannabis pilot program, wrote in an email to The Associated Press. Nine cultivation centers have state approval to begin growing and at least two have begun harvesting. Dispensaries in Mundelein, Canton and Quincy have active state licenses and are ready to open when products are on the shelves and patients receive their stateissued ID cards. Illinois has approved just 3,100 patients for the program, far fewer than investors had expected. That has led David So’s ICR Labs in suburban Chicago to lose its financial backing, he said. “Our lead investor just walked away from the deal because we have such a low patient count,” So told the AP. “It puts me in a very tough place.” Setting safety standards is a tricky business that has stymied other states. The federal government considers marijuana an illegal substance, so no federal agency has set safety requirements for which pesticides can be used. Last week, two marijuana users in Colorado filed a lawsuit against a commercial grower they said used an unhealthy pesticide, a case lawyers say is the first product liability claim in the nation involving the legal marijuana industry. Without federal safety guidelines for cannabis consumption, Illinois based its safety requirements on best practices in other states, said Bob Morgan,

CHICAGO (AP) – People who win more than $600 in the Illinois Lottery won’t get their money right away because of the ongoing state budget impasse, as officials said Thursday that the agency coffers had run out of money. Last month, the Illinois comptroller’s office said that without a budget for the July 1 fiscal year, the office didn’t have the authority to write checks of more than $25,000 and payments would be delayed. Lottery officials said Wednesday that they anticipated the agency’s check writing account would be exhausted the next day and that there was no legal authority to replenish it. As of Thursday morning, the account – used to pay winnings between

Prizes $600 and below are paid by retailers using money from ticket sales and will continue to be awarded. “Once a budget is passed in Springfield, all outstanding claims will be paid,” Illinois Lottery in a statement. Two lottery winners have filed a federal lawsuit against the Illinois Lottery for stopping payouts of prizes above $25,000 because of the budget impasse. The lawsuit seeks to force the lottery to pay winners of more than $25,000 with 5 percent interest and asks that the lottery be barred from paying its administrative or operational costs until the winners receive their prizes. The lawsuit alleges dozens await more than $288 million in prizes.

Better with buffalo

Pulled chicken sandwiches worth the wait

uring what was likely one of the last warmweather weeks of the year, I was debating what to make for dinner. I was craving buffalo sauce, but didnâ€™t have any wings at the house. But, because of their convenience and health benefits, my fiancee and I never have a shortage of chicken breasts in our freezer. In the style of buffalo wings, what could I make that would hit the spot and send the summer out in style? Pulled chicken sandwiches in buffalo sauce. Boom! Thatâ€™s what. So, I started the slow cooker, cooked up some homemade sauce, seasoned the chicken and let it sit. Now, Iâ€™m sitting there, too, hanging out on the couch. â€œYou know whatâ€™d be good on those sandwiches? ... Homemade pepper coleslaw,â€? I say to myself. But, I donâ€™t have all of the ingredients for that. Are you telling me Iâ€™m going to the store, after all? Ugh. Iâ€™m going to the store. Sometimes, Iâ€™m just totally not in the mood to get groceries. Just get in and out. Donâ€™t get distracted. It wonâ€™t be that bad. Yes, Iâ€™m talking to myself again.

I get what I need, and Iâ€™m close to checking out. And then there it is, staring me in the face. Velveeta. Itâ€™s not even real cheese. Why do I even like it? Why does a cheese dip â€“ made with fake cheesy goodness â€“ sound so good right now? I donâ€™t know, OK? But it does, so itâ€™s happening. I leave with more bags than I expected, but while Iâ€™m a little disappointed in myself Iâ€™m going to chalk it up to a big-time cheat day, and enjoy myself. And that happens. Youâ€™re not always going to eat perfect meals. Itâ€™s all about enjoying when you choose to indulge, and then getting back on the horse the next day. Itâ€™s hard to eat cheese dip on a horse anyway. So, if today is your ride on the wild side, then hereâ€™s a simple and tasty dinner to enjoy.

shire sauce Âź tablespoon cayenne pepper Âź tablespoon garlic powder Salt, pepper to taste 1. Chop onion and jalapeno and place them in the slow cooker. 2. Season your chicken breast and put them in the slow cooker. 3. Mix ingredients for sauce in pot on stove and bring to boil, then let simmer. The longer you simmer, the thicker the sauce. 4. Once youâ€™re ready, pour the sauce over the chicken in the slow cooker. Let chicken cook on high for 4 hours. 5. Once the chicken is able to be pulled apart easily with a fork, take the breasts out of the slow cooker. 6. Put the sauce through a strainer to catch the onion, and jalapeno. 7. Pull chicken apart. Once it is pulled apart, pour sauce back over chicken and let it cook on low for 30 more minutes.

Makes: 8 to 10 sandwiches Prep time: 30 minutes Cook: 5 hours 4 large chicken breasts Â˝ yellow onion Â˝ jalapeno Package of buns Seasoning: Salt, pepper, Tony Chachereâ€™s Creole seasoning For sauce 1 5-oz. bottle of hot sauce Â˝ cup butter 1Â˝ tablespoons of white vinegar Â˝ tablespoon Worcester-

1/ red onion 3 Â˝ red pepper Â˝ yellow or orange pepper 1 package of shredded red cabbage 1 package of shredded coleslaw mix 6 tablespoons of Miracle Whip 2Â˝ tablespoons white vinegar Salt, pepper to taste 1. Cut the pepper and red onion into skinny 2-inch long pieces. 2. Mix with shredded cabbage

NOTE: If you are not a huge fan of vinegar, tread lightly. If you like more dressing, add more of each. 4. Season with salt and pepper, stir, and let sit in refrigerator for 30 minutes before serving.

Empty cheese and condensed can of cream of mushroom soup into the slow cooker; set to low. 2. Brown ground turkey on stove; mix with cheese. 3. Dice onion and jalapeno and add to slow cooker. Season with red pepper flakes. 4. Let cook for around 30 minutes. NOTE: If your slow cooker runs hot, keep an eye on it. The processed cheese can burn pretty easily at the slow cookerâ€™s hot points.
