Youth leader’s vision: Memorial Skate Park

Loveland director: Repurposing pool wouldn’t cost district a dime

Not everyone’s going to like the idea, Wilson admitted, but he said it’s worth considering.

Wilson proposed a partnership between the two groups that would turn Memorial Pool into Memorial Skate Park at no cost to Dixon Parks.

The board oversees Veterans Memorial Pool, a facility that was closed 15 years ago and that would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to revive. It’s decaying, routinely trespassed, and becoming difficult for the cash-strapped district to maintain.

Wilson, who leads Project GenNex, a group of teenagers and adults whose aim is to bring a youth center to Dixon, said teens like to skate, but they have nowhere safe to do it.

On Wednesday night, he offered an idea that could solve both the district’s dilemma, and GenNex’s.

Ready, aim, win: Rigler racks up impressive record In a sport dominated by men, Janice Rigler has made her mark

STERLING – Janice Rigler is a rare bird. The 63-year-old Sterling woman is the second-best female trapshooter in North America and one of only a handful of competitive female trapshooters in the area.

“I had never been around guns in my life,” Janice said while surrounded by rifles and shotguns in Rigler’s Shooting Sports Supply, the shop she owns with her husband, Ken, in Rock Falls. “But I tried it, and I was hooked.” “I missed a lot of targets for a long time before I got into the groove,” Rigler continued. “Then I just loved the competition. You want to get ’em, you want to break ’em, and when you do, you get this big puff of black smoke. … It’s so satisfying.”

Trapshooting is one of the three major disciplines of competitive clay pigeon shooting.

Janice uses a 12-gauge shotgun – a Perazzi MX10 combination gun that has both a single barrel and an over-under barrel, which allows her to compete in single-target and double-target events.

Her other equipment is pretty bare bones: ammunition, of course (and lots of it; she

Janice has an impressive record. She is the No. 2 woman on the All-American Team; she was No. 8 on the team in 2013, the first year she qualified for the prized spot.
