Haunted house owner enjoys delivering some thrills, chills and a few ghostly giggles MOUNT CARROLL – Halloween is getting scary close. For some, like Jim Warfield, every day is All Hallows’ Eve. The 67-year-old not only runs, but lives in a haunted house with his wife, Jessica. You need not wait until late-October to take a tour. Raven’s Grin Inn is open year-round.

The house was built in 1870 and has been a schoolhouse, a speakeasy, and a car dealership, among other things.

Warfield, 67, said he made his home into a haunted house for entertainment purposes, but many people have claimed to have had real supernatural experiences while inside his home. “People would go down to the wine cellar during the tour and I would walk down the steps and they would say, ‘Wow! That was really neat, how’d you do that?’ and I said ‘What?’ and they said, ‘That woman back there in the corner with the dark hair and the white dress, she floated across the room,’� said Warfield.

The only problem is: that wasn’t part of the attraction.

Warfield said people have had similar experiences in the wine cellar.

Despite living in a house that has had a plethora of ghost sightings, he said it doesn’t bother him very much because the ghosts

plumbing in the house.

Warfield has spent countless hours turning it into the haunted house of his dreams. “I make all of my own stuff; I try not to copy other people,� he said.

As for the art of scaring, Warfield said it’s all about the build-up and less about the jumpy scares. “Having a haunted house, you have to set people up for it, you have to make their anticipation level go up,� he said. “My house is not like a Hollywood horror movie.

I think Hollywood does a big disservice with most of the movies they make because ... they take something that’s more subtle and then they keep adding on to it and adding on to it.�

It’s all about the perfect balance of humor and horror, Warfield said.

For instance, one of the many tales visitors will hear centers on a graveyard just across the parking lot and beyond a wooded area near his house. “I like to tell people that right beyond those trees is a graveyard ... 6,500 cold, hard stones. There’s a lot of dead people buried up there, most of my relatives are buried there, and most of them – are dead,� he said with a cackle. “The tallest stone you’ll find in that graveyard has my last name on it.�

seem to mind their own business for the most part.

Warfield said Raven’s Grin Inn is a haunted house that all ages truly can enjoy, which is why he adds a little bit of humor to his tours. “We try to have fun here, and I’ve had some people halfway through the house ask me to stop making them laugh because their face hurts,� he said.

Some might wonder where the name Raven’s Grin Inn originated.

According to Warfield, it has some literary and comedic affiliations. “I sat down and thought about it for a long time before I came up with the name. I had about 85 different names I had come up with,� Warfield said. “One of the most popular poems in the United States was Edgar Alan Poe’s ‘The Raven.’ It’s spooky, but it’s not over the top, but I wanted to entertain people, not terrorize them, so the raven is grinning.�

The house is four stories with dozens of rooms.

Warfield takes his customers on a room-byroom, hour-long tour filled with twists, turns, tunnels, secret passages and much more. All while delivering his own monologue of the house’s haunted history.

He purchased the house in 1988 for $3,000, against the wishes of many folks in town who warned him it was haunted.

Family enjoys welcoming visitors to mingle with exotic animals – oh, yeah, and a 40-pound rabbit

PROPHETSTOWN – In an area where you can barely go 5 miles without seeing cows, horses or pigs, Dwight and Wanda Deitrick are breaking the mold by sharing their love of alpacas with the community.

The retired couple – Dwight a former businessman and Wanda, who taught for 30 years – originally raised feeder pigs and cattle on their 50-acre farm.

“One night, Dwight was reading a magazine,” Wanda said. “He found an article about alpacas, and the rest is history.”

That was 11 years and 71 alpacas ago.

They began with seven animals and are still growing. They’ve shown alpacas at farm shows and won several ribbons in competitions.

But what they most enjoy is bringing crowds to Deitricks’ Alpaca Ranch, whose doors are open year-round to the public and groups from schools, clubs, and special needs associations.

The ranch also hosts a free open ranch event during the National Alpaca Farm days – this year, it was last Saturday and Sunday – where people can come and learn about the alpaca lifestyle.

Fibers are sheared from the alpaca once a year and cleaned on-site before being shipped to another location to be made into yarn, hats, and scarves that are sold in the family-run store. Each alpaca generally produces 6 to 7 pounds of fiber per shearing and the fibers are as warm as wool but lighter. The store carries 20 of the 22 natural colors alpacas produce.

Deitrick’s stepgranddaughter-in-law, Tracy Livesay, has been working at the farm since 2012, helping with the sales, marketing, and cleaning the fibers. She spent 25 years in Chicago working in high property management before mov-

ing to the area and said her new line of work is both peaceful and dreamy.

“I like that it never feels like work,” Tracy said. “I love working with the alpacas and getting to help knit items in the store.”

The 2-day open house brings in 200plus visitors. There’s more to it than repeat customers and the business they bring, Dwight said. He and Wanda plan to keep doing what they’ve been doing for a long time.

“We like having something people enjoy,” he said. “And we like seeing people enjoy and get excited about the alpacas.”

She goes a cut above and beyond Rock Falls native lends a hand to give haircuts to those in need

STERLING – It’s hot out. If you’re homeless, how good would a haircut feel? How much would that buoy your spirits?

Pamela Rose, a 38-year-old Rock Falls native who lives in Rochelle, recently found out it feels pretty good to be the one with the sheers, too.

In July, the stylist/educator walked the streets of Chicago, handing out gift bags of toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, the sort of stuff easily taken for granted.

It was so nourishing for her soul that she organized a Haircuts of the Homeless event Aug. 28 in Rockford. She did the same thing the next day at the salon where she works, RoccoS in Rochelle, where 52 people turned out over 4 hours, and on a Monday no less.

“That made me want to go back to where I grew up and give back,” she said.

“People aren’t aware of how many others are in need in small towns. In small towns, you don’t see as much of it, but it’s still there.”

She’s teaming up with Firehouse of God Ministries in Sterling to host an event at 1 p.m. Sunday in the church’s lot at 306 Fifth Ave. in Sterling. More than a half-dozen barbers and stylists will give a lift, even if it’s something of a luxury, to those who so badly need to catch a break.

“Sometimes, the simplest things can mean so much to people,” said Annie Vroman, secretary at Firehouse of God Ministries. “I know there are individuals out there who have no means whatsoever, who struggle month-to-month with the normal things. A haircut is a luxury.

This can take one small burden off of the homeless who are truly struggling.”

Rose will bring some alreadyassembled gift bags, but is always looking for more donations. After

all, when she scrambled to catch her train out of Chicago back in July, her lasting visual was a gentleman sleeping on a bench – naked, aside from the reusable shopping bags that covered him.

“That was God’s way of saying, ‘You’re not done. You need to come back,’” she said.

Not everyone would so eagerly answer such a call, Vroman said.

“I was quite moved by it myself,” she said. “For someone to venture out in the streets of Chicago. It’s an amazing thing, her ministry.”

Rose found it emotionally exhausting to walk by folks in the Chicago streets, so many of them with their hand out. A wife and a mother of five teenagers, “financially, there’s not much I can do for them. But I can cut their hair.”

She’s looking for donations of all sorts. She’d really like to get clothes she can give to the homeless when she returns to Chicago this fall.

She’ll also accept gift cards – when a Rockford Walmart gave her crew a gift card, they bought hot dogs and cooked them for their customers.

Just like at the salon, she and her stylists enjoy making small talk at these events – to learn about their customers and lend an ear for those excited to simply have someone to chat up.

“In Illinois, they’re closing so many institutions for people with disabilities,” Rose said. “You never know why people are put into the situation they’re in.”

Not all retailers are trimming back their brick-and-mortar footprints.

Dollar stores and offprice chains, taking advantage of solid sales and bargain-hunting shoppers, are on an expansion kick, claiming half the spots on a list of 10 retailers adding the most new store square footage, according to commercial real

estate and analytics firm CoStar.

Dollar General, second overall, led a trio of dollar stores in CoStar’s top 10, based on retailers’ announced U.S. store openings as of the second quarter of 2016.

Dollar General, which started the year with nearly 12,500 stores, has announced plans to open 900 more this year and another 1,000 in 2017. Last week, the chain said it’s looking to hire 10,000 new employees by midOctober.

DIXON – The drug addict’s road to recovery can be rough. Sometimes, tragically, it spirals off into a dead end. But sometimes, people are lucky enough to find a safe passage, like the one in Lee County.

Safe though that passage has been, it hasn’t always been smooth, and its end wasn’t always clear – but it was a new course, and one that’s still being mapped.

In Dixon on Wednesday, the people who’ve been a part of that journey celebrated a symbolic mile marker: The 1-year anniversary of the Safe Passage Initiative, a program that aims to save the lives of heroin and opioid addicts by getting them into treatment instead of jail. Users can come to the police, surrender their drugs and paraphernalia, face no criminal charges, and be accepted into drug rehab, no matter their ability to pay.

A year later, many people have come a long way, but the road ahead is long, and some days it seems like there’s no end in sight, but that doesn’t deter the people who are helping addicts on their journey.

“One life we save each day is better than what we were doing a year ago,” Lee County Sheriff John Simonton said Wednesday during the 1-year celebration of the Safe Passage Initiative.

A new approach was needed to combat the problem.

The answer formed by the DPD, Sheriff’s Office and a slew of local leaders and organizations was Safe Passage.

Alyssa Irvin is one of the people – along with 106 others – who’s making the journey to recovery. There have been months of uneasy travel, but she’s committed to staying the course. She was at Wednesday’s celebration to thank the people who helped her.

“Without the help of my mother, the Safe Passage program and the Dixon Police Department, this would not be possible; I’d probably be dead or back on drugs,” she said. “You guys are needed, appreciated, loved and life-changers.”

Langloss said heroin addiction is a disease where those plagued by it are often turned away from receiving help and are sent home “to play Russian Roulette.”

“Drug overdose is the No. 1 cause of accidental death in the United States,” Langloss said. “It has well surpassed vehicle accidents, well surpassed any accidents in industry at work, and it is most definitely preventable, and more has to be done.”

The nation’s successful recovery rate is 10 percent, and Safe Passage’s recovery rate surpasses 65 percent, KSB Hospital President and CEO Dave Schreiner said.

The main goals of the program were to place addicts directly into treatment – within an hour or so of walking in the door – to change law enforcement’s view to see the addiction as a disease that can’t be cured with punishment, and to make sure the recovering participants have a timely transition to outpatient and outreach support.

Langloss and Simonton are working with 40 police departments in Illinois and Iowa to institute similar programs.

ookie bars, sliced pie squares, granola bars and crisped rice treats.

Whether topped with a drizzle of chocolate or crumbly streusel, bars are the go-to treats for bake sales and school lunches, perfect for potlucks and office parties, or simply a snack when you’re on the run.

No-Bake Peanut Butter Bars Time: 30 minutes, plus chilling times Makes: 16 to 20 bars 1 (12-ounce) jar plus 1/ cup smooth peanut 3 butter, divided ½ cup (1 stick) butter, softened 2 cups powdered sugar 1 (12-ounce) box crisped rice cereal 2½ cups chocolate chips, divided ½ to 1 cup roasted salted peanuts, coarsely chopped 1. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat 12 ounces peanut butter and the butter until smooth.

Add the powdered sugar and beat until smooth.

2. Crush the crisped rice cereal to a coarse

meal: Pulse the cereal in batches using a food processor, or place the cereal in a large sealable plastic bag and crush using a rolling pin.

3. Add the cereal to the peanut butter mixture and beat to combine.

Press the mixture into a greased 13- by 9-inch baking dish. Chill until firm.

4. Place 2 cups chocolate chips in a glass measuring cup or dish and microwave, stirring every 30 seconds or so, until melted and smooth. Stir in the remaining 1⁄3 cup peanut butter until fully combined and smooth.

Spread the melted chocolate mixture over the peanut butter bars. Sprinkle over the peanuts. Melt the remaining ½ cup chocolate chips, then drizzle the melted chocolate over the peanuts.

Chill until the chocolate is firm, then cut into bars.

Salted Caramel Shortbread Bars Time: 45 minutes, plus cooling times Makes: 16 to 24 bars For shortbread 1½ cups (3 sticks) butter, softened 1 cup powdered sugar 3 cups (12.75 ounces) flour

For a crumbly berry bar, top a sable-inspired cookie base with jam and fresh berries or fruit, then crumble more of the cookie mixture on top. ½ teaspoon baking powder 1. Heat the oven to 350 degrees.

2. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, or in a bowl using a hand mixer, beat the butter and sugar until creamy, 3 to 4 minutes. Mix the flour and baking powder together and beat into the butter mixture.

3. Press the dough into the bottom of a 13- by 9-inch baking dish. Bake until golden, 30 to 35 minutes. Cool to room temperature.

For caramel and assembly 11⁄3 cups sugar ½ cup water 1 teaspoon corn syrup 1 cup heavy cream ¼ cup (½ stick) butter 1¼ teaspoons vanilla extract Prepared cooled shortbread 1 teaspoon very coarse sea salt, preferably Maldon 1. In a large saucepan, combine the sugar, water and corn syrup, stirring until the sugar has the consistency of wet sand.

Place the saucepan over high heat and cook until the sugar dissolves and begins to boil. Do not stir the sugar, as this might

cause it to seize.

2. While the sugar is cooking, combine the cream and butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Keep an eye on the sugar while you’re heating the cream to keep it from scorching.

Cook until the butter melts, stirring it into the cream. When the mixture has come to a simmer, remove from heat.

3. Continue to cook the sugar until it darkens to a rich caramel color, 7 to 10 minutes – the sugar will darken quickly and noticeably and will smell faintly nutty. Swirl the pan as the sugar darkens to judge the true color of the caramel (the sugar might darken in patches if there are hot spots on the stove). Watch carefully, as the sugar can easily overcook at this point and burn.

4. As soon as the color is darkened to a rich caramel, remove the pan from the heat and quickly add the cream mixture in a slow, steady stream.

The sugar will bubble and steam as the cream is added; be careful as both the mixture and steam are very hot.

Carefully stir in the vanilla, then continue to stir until the mixture stops

bubbling. Remove from heat and set aside until cool to just warm.

5. Pour the cooled caramel over the shortbread, using a spatula to push it to the edges of the dish for an even layer. Sprinkle over the coarse salt. Refrigerate until cold, then cut into bars.

Berry Bars (vegan) Time: 1 hour, plus cooling time Makes: 12 to 16 bars 1¼ cups refined coconut oil 1 cup vegan sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1¼ teaspoons almond extract 3 ⁄4 teaspoon salt 2 cups almond meal 1½ teaspoons baking powder 3 cups (12.75 ounces) flour 1 cup berry jam or preserves 1 pint fresh berries 1 cup sliced almonds 1. Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 13- by 9-inch baking dish.

and salt until well combined, 1 to 2 minutes.

3. By hand, stir in the almond meal, then the baking powder and flour until thoroughly incorporated. The dough will be somewhat crumbly; this is OK. 4. Place 3⁄4 of the dough mixture into the greased baking dish, pressing to form an even layer across the bottom of the dish.

5. Spoon the jam over the dough, spreading to form an even layer that reaches almost to the edges of the dough.

Sprinkle over the berries.

6. Add the sliced almonds to the remaining dough, pressing until the mixture will clump in your hands. Crumble the mixture over the berries and jam.

7. Bake the bars until the topping is firm and lightly browned, about 45 minutes. Remove and cool on a rack before cutting into bars.

Note: Sugar is often processed using animal bone char, which is unacceptable to many vegans. This recipe calls for vegan sugar (animalfree processing), which is generally available at health food markets, as well as online.

• Work directly with the engineering and maintenance departments on Sanitary Design of equipment and modifications prior and during installation as it pertains to HACCP Change Control. Perform weekly integrity reviews of production equipment.

• Be an active member of the Factory Food Safety Team.

• Maintain up to date working knowledge and skill levels in all areas of Food Safety and be capable of informing and directing others with all pertinent changes that affect them.

• Train and supervise all assigned employees and/or direct reports as appropriate.

• Support activities to achieve compliance with the Nestlé Quality Management System requirements and other applicable instructions and standards.

• Primary contact for the factory Food Defense Plan development, implementation, review, and update.

• Function as a resource in the development, coordination and administering of Food Defense related activities as dictated by the Food Defense Plan.

• Be able to develop and deliver training related to Food Defense. Understand the FDA Food Defense 101 Training, which includes ALERT and FIRST training.

The City of Sterling is seeking an experienced I.T. Manager to assume responsibility for managing the municipality’s internal I.T. functions under the supervision of the Police Chief. This individual will plan, coordinate, direct, and design I.T.-related activities for the municipality as a whole. The I.T. Manager will work closely with decision makers in all departments to identify, recommend, develop, budget, implement, and support costeffective technology solutions for all aspects of the City. This person will also define and implement I.T. policies, procedures, and best practices to ensure continuity and security. The I.T. Manager provides leadership and direction to other I.T. team members and is accountable for coaching, mentoring, managing, and leading I.T. personnel as well as assisting in helpdesk functions. The position is also responsible for procurement and relationships with outside vendors.

The successful applicant will be highly self-motivated and have significant experience in all I.T. aspects including Exchange, Active Directory, DNS protocols, virtualization, as well as LAN, WAN and VoIP operations. Must pass Criminal Justice Fingerprint/ background check, pass drug screening and hold a valid Illinois Driver’s license.

The City of Sterling offers an excellent work environment, fringe benefits, and IMRF pension. Salary is $57,000-$76,633 DOQ.
