DIXON – Local transportation officials are making a lot of connections with their new bus route. The new Interstate 88 Greyhound Bus route is nearing its third full month of usage, and already they’re surprised and excited at how many people are catching a ride. Launched in June, service features four daily routes from Davenport to Chicago, with Dixon being one of five stops along the way. The Dixon-based LeeOgle Transportation System obtained federal funding to launch the program, which was years in the making, LOTS executive director Jaime Blatti said. So far, the number of passengers using the Greyhound route is promising, she said. “We were all pleasantly surprised and excited with the preliminary ridership reports,” Blatti said. “It shows there is a great
need for this service.” In June, the route had an estimated 380 total passengers. In Dixon, 18 boarded buses and 22 people got off in the city. The numbers rose to 468 in July, with 42 boarding and 33 disembarking in Dixon. Those numbers should rise again for August, Blatti said. The intent of the program, she said, is to connect people in rural Dixon to the rest of the country. Most of the passengers use the bus to reach major cities, like Atlanta, Milwaukee and Omaha, Nebraska. Blatti said she sold a ticket for a trip to Mississippi on Monday. “It’s not so much getting you to Chicago,” she said. “It’s after you get to Chicago, what other meaningful connections are there to get you to Dallas or Tucson or Myrtle Beach? When we set up these routes, it’s not as simple as how long it takes to get from Rochelle to DeKalb. When we get to Chicago or
Davenport, it’s about how many different buses can we take and to where. “We’re offering people in the rural community like Dixon the opportunity to get national.” After a “soft launch,” during which passengers could buy tickets online only, Blatti said tickets now also are being sold at the Ronald Reagan Transit Center at 210 E. Progress Drive in Dixon. Most passengers travel to and from Chicago, which Blatti called a “major Midwest transportation hub.” Data estimates show that 92 percent of the 850 passengers in June and July went to or left from the Windy City. The program offers four bus routes now (two in each direction) that hit Dixon at 8 a.m., 9:55 a.m., 1:45 p.m. and 7 p.m., with other stops in Naperville, DeKalb, Rochelle and Moline. The heaviest concentration of passengers is on the middle two routes – 301 of July’s

And as football season approaches, LOTS is looking at DeKalb’s Northern Illinois University Huskies as being a major draw for sports fans. Some discussion involves adding a fifth bus route to accommodate an expected usage spike. Or Greyhound might start to use larger buses to carry the expected surge in passengers. Because this is a federally funded pilot program, Blatti said, the numbers are important to show that buses are a useful mechanism to Dixon and other communities. It has 2 years to show the Federal Transportation Administration that it’s a worthwhile endeavor to continue to fund. That’s another reason popularity at the onset is a promising sign. Blatti hopes to remove the

Four cool coleslaws that cut cabbage Raw vegetables add crunch, twist to classic dish BY JUDY HEVRDEJS Tribune News Service
Bored with the usual slaws? The mayo-doused number at the deli or your aunt’s vinegared version? Don’t fret. We’ve dug up recipes that get to the root of your problem – which is that cabbage is so 245 years ago. The koolsla recipes the Dutch brought to this country circa 1770 used cabbage. And that’s been pretty much the base for coleslaws ever since. But chefs and culinary pros like to tinker with classic recipes, so they’re using beets, kohlrabi, carrots, fennel, celery root. All are sturdy, colorful, flavorful. All have slaw potential. The fennel slaw served with a roasted fish sandwich at Found Kitchen and Social House in Evanston, began with a rethinking of classic coleslaw, explained Nicole Pederson, the restaurant’s executive chef and partner. “We call it a slaw because it’s raw vegetables all sliced very thinly,� she said. Shaved fennel is mixed with ribbons shaved from different colors of baby carrots. A bit of napa cabbage is added along with pickled onions, and it’s finished with lemon juice and olive oil. What sets these new slaws apart from their salad siblings is the shredded or thinly sliced ingredients, said cookbook author Rick Rodgers, whose recent “The Big Book of Sides� (Ballantine Books), features several slaw recipes, including one that teams kohlrabi with almonds and apples. He suggests cutting raw vegetables 1/4-inch or sometimes an 1/8-inch thick. “Slices have to be small enough to be tender without cooking.� That thin slicing and crunch from raw vegetables make these updated slaws a perfect accompaniment to so many dishes, summer’s grilled meats and fish among them. It’s a good way to add a fun texture to a meal, said Pederson: “When they’re shredded, they seem so much lighter.� What about dressings? Well, there are no rules. “Except for the fact you have to kind of bow to regional or family preferences,� said Rodgers, citing a diner coleslaw popular in New Jersey that marinates all the vegetables in a sweet

But stay away from graters: “The typical box grater will make the shreds too fine, and you end up with vegetable puree.â€? • Balance flavors: “I use radish a lot because it’s got that heat and brightness to it,â€? said Nicole Pederson. “Put carrot in, and that sweetens it up, rounds it all out. Beets raw are really sweet and delicious, but they have a backbone of earthiness.â€? She may use a mix of beet varieties, such as candy stripes and goldens. • Consider colors: Use the same sensibilities you would to make a side dish look nice, Rodgers said. • Add herbs: “We like to add a lot of fresh herbs right at the end,â€? said Pederson, who’s favoring dill and summer savory at the moment. • Shred an apple: “Apple blends in because its texture is softer,â€? said Rodgers. “It is a flavor element that’s nondetectable.â€? Raw Beet Slaw with Fennel, Tart Apple and Parsley Prep: 25 minutes Makes: 4 servings Diane Morgan, author of “Roots,â€? (Chronicle Books) suggests serving this at a barbecue, at brunch with cured salmon or alongside country pate. Use a mandoline or a sharp chef’s knife to cut beets into matchsticks. Use disposable surgical gloves, or you’ll end up with red hands. 3 tablespoons extravirgin olive oil 1 tablespoon each: fresh lemon juice, freshly grated orange zest 1/2 teaspoon each: honey, fine sea salt
1/8 teaspoon freshly ground pepper 1 medium red beet, 3 to 5 ounces, peeled, cut into matchsticks 1/2 fennel bulb, trimmed, halved lengthwise, cored, cut into matchsticks 1/2 medium crisp tart apple such as Granny Smith, cored, cut into matchsticks 1/2 cup firmly packed chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley In a small bowl, whisk together oil, lemon juice, orange zest, honey, salt and pepper. In a medium bowl, toss together beet, fennel, apple and parsley. Add dressing. Mix gently to coat ingredients evenly. Serve immediately, or cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. Remove from refrigerator 30 minutes before serving. Slaw can be made up to 8 hours in advance. Presentation note: If you don’t serve immediately and want to prevent the beets from tinting the fennel, keep beets separate (dressed with half the dressing) and mix in right before serving. With machine running, gradually add oil through hole in the lid. Or crush garlic through a garlic press into a medium bowl. Add vinegar, miso and soy sauce; whisk until combined. Gradually whisk in oil. In a food processor fitted with the coarse shredding blade, shred carrots. Do not shred carrots too fine. If your food processor only has a fine shredding disk, use a V-slicer to julienne carrots into strips less than 1/8-inch wide. In a medium bowl, toss together carrots, scallion and vinaigrette. Season with salt and pepper. Slaw can be covered and refrigerated up to 8 hours. Serve chilled or at room temperature. Top each serving with a sprinkle of sesame seeds. Stir in tarragon, parsley and chives; taste for salt and season with pepper. Toss kohlrabi matchsticks with just enough dressing to coat well. Garnish with chives. 2 garlic cloves, crushed 4 medium fennel bulbs, cleaned and trimmed to bulbs only, fronds chopped and reserved 1 large Granny Smith apple 1/3 cup chives, cut in 1/4-inch pieces Kosher salt, freshly ground black pepper to taste 4 cups baby arugula 1/2 cup salted, toasted sunflower seeds For gastrique, whisk together brown sugar, maple syrup, vinegar, orange zest and juice, cloves, cinnamon and garlic. Bring to simmer over medium heat. Simmer uncovered until liquid is reduced by about half, about 3/4 cup; about 15 minutes. Strain; set aside for immediate use. Or cover and refrigerate. Cut fennel bulbs in half lengthwise; shave very thin with a mandoline, starting with tops down to the base. If you don’t have a mandoline, do your best with a sharp knife. Peel, halve and core apple; slice thin crosswise. In a medium bowl, toss fennel, apple and chives with gastrique. Season with salt and pepper. Cover; let marinate 30 minutes to one day. To serve, place about 1/4 cup fennel salad on a plate. Top with a fat pinch of arugula. Sprinkle with sunflower seeds; top arugula with more fennel salad and seeds. Serve immediately. Store any unused arugula separate from fennel salad. Fennel salad is good for 5 days in the refrigerator. DIXON – A book kiosk, where park users can pick up and drop off used books, is coming to John Dixon Park within the month. Dixon resident Roberta Berwanger, who came up with the idea, will donate the kiosk. The Park District is willing to give the lending library a try, on the condition its doesn’t prove too problematic, board members said at Wednesday’s meeting. At first, Chairman Ron Pritchard and board members Shane Miller and Steve Pritchard were concerned about extra work for park staff, should the kiosk be vandalized. “I think these lending libraries are an excellent idea,” Ron Pritchard said. “I don’t think they belong in the park. … I’d be concerned with what people put in there – trash, [adult materials]. This is going to be open to kids.” Steve Pritchard also raised concerns about the cost to install the 4-foottall wooden kiosk. Duane Long, director of maintenance, said installation would be less than $10, but he doesn’t have the staff to monitor the kiosk more than once a day. The district will take the kiosk down if it becomes too much of a hassle. “I think it’s a great idea,” board member Ben Nagy said. “It’s very mobile from the looks of it. I know it’s utilized in other places often. If we have an incident, we can take it down.” Since the agenda item did not require a vote, the board authorized park staff to install the kiosk, which already is built, within the month. “I think these lending libraries are an excellent idea,”

MORRISON – It’s time for budding entrepreneurs to chase their dreams. Fast Pitch competitions are becoming increasingly popular nationwide. Similar to the popular television show “Shark Tank,” the contests give competitors a chance to pitch their business ideas to a panel of experts who can help make their dream of business ownership a reality. The Morrison Area Development Corp. is partnering with the Small Business Development Center at Black Hawk College in Moline to bring Fast Pitch to Morrison. Kim Ewoldsen, MADC executive director, first pitched the idea to the board, and it was well received. “They liked the idea, and one of the board members put me in touch with Joel Youngs at Black Hawk, who had been involved with a similar event for Henry and Stark counties,”

Contestants can come from anywhere, as long as the business takes root in Morrison. The inaugural Fast Pitch event will have some flexibility built in, and it can be tweaked later if the idea takes off, Ewoldsen said. “We want this to become an annual event, and we believe the sky is the limit, so we’re not putting any parameters on it,” she said.

Then contestants prepare for the actual fast pitch, a 10-minute presentation of their business idea. A fast pitch practice session is set for Oct. 22, and the final competition will be held Nov. 10. Ewoldsen isn’t certain about the venue, but thinks the pitches will be made in the Morrison auditorium. Ewoldsen said the practice panel is likely to have local members, while experts from outside the area will judge the finale. The staff at Black Hawk will be available to help contestants through any part of the process.

If you can’t, it’s going to direct you.” He said that having a central place to meet and plan is critical in successfully getting through an emergency. “[The trailer] would go to sites like [the tornado in] Sublette, but it would also go to those places that – let’s say there’s a lost person – it would be a good planning site for that,” Lalley said. “Or a large hazardous material event. Any time that there needs to be organization and planning, it would be useful.” Lalley estimated the cost of such a trailer would be about $80,000. There’s no word yet on from where that money might come.

SUBLETTE – A little more than 2 months after an EF-2 tornado ripped through the southern portion of the Woodhaven Lakes campground, more than $500,000 has been spent on recovery efforts. In the storm, 900 properties were damaged, and 1,400 lots received tree damage, the Woodhaven Lakes Association reported. No one was seriously injured during the storm, although it displaced many. Residents who weren’t in the campground at the time of the storm weren’t allowed on to their property until about a week afterward. Once they were, property owners started lining up at the front gates at 6:30 a.m., even though they wouldn’t be opened for 2 hours more.
