Animal control adopts new home Supervisor: Streamlined system will be beneficial

DIXON – For the first time in ... well, ever, Lee County Animal Control is getting its own building.

And Wednesday was moving day for people and boxes and the one animal housed there – a black-and-white male pit bull terrier.

Animal Control has been looking for a new space for years, said Teri Zimke, animal control supervisor.

The agency has been leasing space from Ashton Animal Clinic to house animals, but the office has been in the old Lee County Courthouse.

The new arrangement is going to make a huge difference, Zimke said, not only for families looking to adopt, but also for animal control workers.

“It’ll be a lot better, because we’re at one place, so people can come and they can view the dogs here instead of going to an off-site place,” she said. “We can do all the paperwork here and not have to transfer anything.

It’s going to work out great.”

The last time the county looked at new space

for animal control, the cost to build would have been between $366,000 and $460,000 – a cost that was, in the end, deemed too high by the county board.

The new space at the old Granite Works building in Dixon Industrial Park, 280 E. Progress Drive, cost half that.

CHICAGO (AP) – With the number of Illinois medical marijuana patients inching slowly upward to 2,600 on Wednesday, the state’s licensed growers are finetuning their models to get the right number of plants in the ground.

At least one company hopes to have marijuana growing this summer.

Others are still months away from planting.

They’re all tracking the official patient total with interest and trepidation.

“They’re watching it

In June, Illinois sent about 100 approval letters to patients who qualify to use marijuana, bringing the total to 2,600, the Illinois Department of Public Health said. About 22,600 people have started the application process on the program’s website.

Of those, about 3,200 have submitted a complete application, 100 more than last month.

The low numbers might be related to patient complaints about a fingerprint-based background check requirement. Some

Having a Frank discussion with local students Rock Falls writer stands tall, tells grads not to sell themselves short

H

ere’s a reminder that is bound to make me less popular among the kids: Before we know it, school will be back in session.

Whether you yourself or a family member or friend is entering high school, the senior year or even college, I’ve got a recommendation: Aaron Frank’s student survival guide, “Don’t Sell Yourself Short: A High School Grad’s Advice on High School and Beyond.”

It, too, features some advice that wouldn’t go over well with certain crowds: the party crowd, the athletics-above-everything superfans, and the slackers might think the book doesn’t have anything to offer them. Wrong again, tough guys. There’s something in the book for all of them at every point of their life. Whether they put it to use is entirely up to them.

As I read it, I found myself wishing I had had a copy before I

began high school. Perhaps what is most impressive is that I always thought I was mature for my age, yet Aaron, 18, is light years ahead of where I was, in terms of the maturity with which he commands such amorphous topics as popularity.

Despite covering his Rock Falls Rockets in a couple of postseason golf meets, I first truly met Aaron on New Year’s Day, when the future business leader of America carved out half an hour for me to pop by his house and talk shop for a column.

(As an aside: Aaron couldn’t help but grin when he told me during a chat Tuesday afternoon that he is entertaining being a writer – “You can’t rule that out, right?” he said.)

He told me about his 34 on the ACT, about turning rejection from Stanford into motivation, and generally wowed me with his genuine, indomitable spirit.

That spirit comes through in spades throughout the book, whether with carefully chosen anecdotes from the classroom, admissions of regret, or Aaron’s innate sense of how to succeed.

And not just in the classroom and in a career – although the book has plenty of pointers on how to get rich, if that’s what you want. More so, Aaron wants to help the world be a better place. And his book will reach the masses. But locally, it’s got enough punch to, in the very least, build a stronger Class of 2016, 2017, and beyond.

His goal is for every high school student in the area to have a copy this fall, and then for every incoming fresh-

man in subsequent years to get a copy, too. He also wants all students in the Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities program – here, at the Whiteside Area Career Center and elsewhere – to have a copy.

Now, sponsors are needed to get all those copies into kids’ hands. So Aaron will be pounding the pavement and meeting with decision-makers right up until he leaves for Loyola University Chicago in mid-August.

Aaron preaches the gospel of the CEO class, a springboard I wholeheartedly agree any self-starter should look into. He urges networking and the unavoidable fact that it’s often not what you know, but who you know.

Admirably, he’s always quick to tack on an important disclaimer: “I’m not going to tell you how to live your life. Take whatever advice you want.” In fact, he’s totally down with you being a burger-flipper, but in my favorite excerpt from the book, he demands you “be the best burger-flipper out there.”

That quote is the bridge between the first two chapters, titled “Life is not a laser beam ...” and “... But Life Requires Laser Focus.” I challenge you to pore over those chapters and resist the urge to take on the world, for at least a moment.

It’s truly a blessing to have a published author walking among us and, better yet, one who is out for the greater good. So whether you want to be an investment banker, a rock star, a journalist (see me after this) or a short-order cook, do yourself a favor and pick up “Don’t Sell Yourself Short.”

Strawberry salad a summer delight

Strawberries are a great addition to salads.

In today’s recipe they are tossed in a mix of baby spinach leaves, cucumber and tangy feta cheese. You can serve the salad as a side dish or topped with grilled chicken or fish as a main dish.

The vinaigrette in this recipe also incorporates strawberries with the addition of strawberry jam. While there are three recipes here, all come together quickly. Make the strawberry jam first so it can sit and cool. It will keep about 5 days in the refrigerator. Use the jam as a spread for toast or muffins.

Summer Salad with Strawberry Vinaigrette Serves: 6 (generously) Preparation time: 15 minutes Total time: 15 minutes 12 ounces baby spinach leaves ½ cup sliced red onion ½ English cucumber, cut lengthwise, sliced 1½ cups fresh strawberries, sliced 4 ounces feta cheese, cut into cubes Salt and pepper to taste

1 pound whole strawberries, washed, hulled Âź cups sugar 3 â „4 cup water Juice and zest from one lemon Pinch of salt In a saucepan, combine all of the ingredients. Heat

over medium, stirring until the sugar has dissolved.

Bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer.

Cook until the mixture achieves a deep red color and has thickened, about an hour. The strawberries will break down and add to the thickness. Transfer mixture to a heat-proof jar or bowl and let cool to room temperature. Store in the refrigerator up to one week.

An eye exam is a good idea, especially if things are starting to look a little fuzzy around the edges.
