State salutes Dr. Sala Pakistan native named AsianAmerican public health champion BY CHRISTI WARREN
ROCK FALLS – This is one of those stories of hope, of hard work paying off, of dreams coming true. As Dr. Nirav Shah, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, said at the Whiteside County Health Department on Wednesday morning, this is one of those stories that shows the good that immigrants can bring to our nation. Just after 10:30 a.m., Dr. Muhammad Salahuddin became one of a very small number of doctors in the state to be honored for his service to public health, having worked in the sphere since 2006. Salahuddin was named an Asian-American public health champion and thanked for the contributions he’s made. Salahuddin knew from a young age that he wanted to be a doctor. He grew up in Lahore, Pakistan, the capital of the Punjab province and a beautiful, bustling metropolis, filled with culture and history. When he was in fourth grade, his parents died. It was then that he realized what he wanted to do with his life. He would walk through the countryside and see these people – sick people, people without health care. “It occurred to me, Why not become a doctor?� said Salahuddin, 78. Dr. Sala, as he’s affectionately known, came to America – to the Chicago area – in 1986 with his wife. “I wanted to learn the

most modern medicine,� he said. “That was my ambition. That’s it. And, I did learn, and today I am here.� After he went through medical residency and training, he began to look for places to live. He settled on Sterling. “The name was fascinating,� he said, laughing. Beth Fiorini, administrator of the health department, was sitting in on the interview, and she laughed, too. “You liked the name Sterling?� she said. “I liked the name!� Salahuddin affirmed. When he first arrived in town, he worked as a
temporary doctor at the mill clinic before being taken on full time. In 2006, he came to work at the health department. He still makes the journey back to his home country when he can, usually for about 3 months out of the year. “They don’t have as good of medical care as they should, so, I spend my time with them. I diagnose them, treat them, refer them, even personally go to help them. It gives me a lot of comfort, and I feel sort of compensated doing that.� Shah is also of south Asian ancestry, some-

STERLING – When Carol Fitzgerald, executive director of the YWCA, bids her adieus in July after more than 29 years with the organization, someone will be there ready to take the
months once the YWCA has settled on a permanent replacement to fill Fitzgerald’s shoes. Before retiring in November 2011, Mershart was YWCA director in Madison for 13 years. Mershart will stay in a hotel while she’s here and do some commuting from Madison, Fitzgerald said, but will spend
most of her time in the Sauk Valley, likely 4 days a week. Mershart’s selection as interim director came from the national board and the local transition committee after they received a number of referrals for retired directors who were interested in taking on the interim job. Fitzgerald, 61, began her role
as executive director with the local YWCA in September 1985. Her retirement, she has said, will focus on spending more time caring for her granddaughter, who as come to live with her and her husband, and exploring other volunteer opportunities. Her retirement officially will begin July 1.

STERLING – A bill that will help domestic violence victims get back on their feet after leaving their abusers is now headed to the Gov. Bruce Rauner for his signature. The bill, co-sponsored by state Rep. Mike Smiddy, D-Hillsdale, is focused on extending the amount of time victims of domestic violence have to become more financially stable before making an initial deposit for utility bills. Carol Fitzgerald, executive director of the YWCA of the Sauk Valley, said that will be a great thing for domestic violence victims, both locally and statewide. “Domestic violence victims are often victims of economic abuse,” she said. “So, that means that a bad economic record can follow them. Then, what happens is, when people have a bad economic record and they go out to look for separate housing or go out to sign up for utilities, they’re not able to get that. “Sometimes the abuser takes out credit in their name and ruins their credit, and so having

more time to pay those utility bills, that’s a real benefit for the victim.” Fitzgerald said it was common for victims to come to the YWCA for help in getting back on their feet financially. “The financial cost of moving from an abusive living arrangement can keep people in dangerous situations,” Smiddy said in a news release. “As state leaders, we need to take steps to reduce the financial hardships of victims, and allowing additional time to establish initial payments is a great first step.” Senate Bill 1645 requires that before benefits are approved, the violence must be certified by medical personnel, a law enforcement agency, a state’s attorney, the attorney general, or a domestic violence shelter. “This is a great step toward helping people move forward out of abusive relationships and into a positive future,” Fitzgerald said.

Structure closer to demolition Rockford

ROCK FALLS – The city received a verbal commitment this week from environmental regulators that the Limestone Building would be removed soon from the riverfront. The city learned in spring 2014 it would receive a $200,000 assessment grant from the federal Environmental Protection Agency to start the process of demolishing the troublesome building in the 200 block of West First Street. As a featured city, Rock Falls will present its cleanup story at the National Brownfields Conference Sept. 2-5 at the Chicago Hilton. The city has received about $6 million in EPA funding to assist with riverfront cleanup. EPA officials were in town Monday for a conference planning session, and the Limestone Building also was discussed. “We met with the Illinois EPA, U.S. EPA, and Terracon Monday to assemble our program for the September conference,” Mayor Bill Wescott said. “They concurred that this building must be demolished soon.” Terracon is a Naperville-based consulting firm that helped the city to get the assessment grant. The firm was also hired to oversee the project. Terracon was hired to develop a comprehensive community development plan that was completed

A recycling plan was made for the limestone. Other items, including the stairs and circular metal staircase, will be part of the plans. “We’re going to salvage as much as we can, but the Public Property Committee will figure out the specifics of repurposing the materials,” Blackert said. Farm equipment was manufactured at the Limestone Building from 1867 to 1961, and the edifice has been vacant since. The city acquired the building in 2009 as part of a larger plan in which the city used EPA brownfields grants to remediate several other riverfront structures from 2005 to 2009.

Blackert said the additional money would come from an IEPA revolving loan fund. The fund stipulates that the money doesn’t have to be paid back until there is development at the site. She said the city hopes to have the demolition completed by late fall. “We have one more quarterly report to file, and then EPA can sign off on the demolition,” Blackert said. “Then the work

Break chicken fatigue with fantastic recipe BY LUCAS PAULEY
F
or those trying to lose weight – or just eat healthier in general – eating the same meals and foods can become monotonous. This can lead to frustration and reverting to old habits. This is the main reason that I believe strongly in challenging yourself in the kitchen and having a “cheat day” once a week. During my ongoing journey of attempting to improve my health, I’ve been asked countless times, “Don’t you get sick of eating chicken and vegetables all the time?” Well, the answer to that is somewhat complicated. There’s no doubt that chicken has been a big part of my lifestyle change. Its health benefits – low in fat and calories; high in protein and nutrients – are why many people rely on it when trying to get or stay healthy. You can do so many things with chicken. I promise you, it’s a beautiful world out there that features more than just lemon pepper seasoning and famous barbecue sauces.
Enjoy the burn? Make your own homemade hot sauce or dry rub. Have a little more of a sweet tooth? Try a barbecue sauce featuring a base of raw, natural honey and fresh tomatoes. But, even with all the endless possibilities, sometimes I suffer from what I call “chicken fatigue.” Sometimes, your mind, body and soul are screaming out for some sort of break from the routine. During my most recent uprising of the taste buds, I decided to try something I’d never cooked before: Pork tacos. More and more health officials are promoting the benefits of eating pork. Obviously, leaner cuts are much healthier than bacon, which contains large amounts of fat and sodium. So, when you eat pork in moderation, you can enjoy one of the most versatile meats in the world virtually without guilt. In this recipe, the final step of cooking the pork on the stove in its own juices is recommended, but can be skipped for those trying to keep things a little healthier. I encourage you to alter my recipe, give me feedback, and share some recipes you go to when you’re getting a little tired of chicken. Hope you enjoy!

Pork tacos Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 6-8 hours Makes: About 10-12 tacos 2.5 lb pork shoulder with bone ½ onion, chopped 1 jalapeño, chopped 1 orange, squeezed 3 cloves of garlic, minced Package of whole wheat tortillas Seasonings to taste: Salt, pepper, red pepper flakes, chili powder and cumin seed For your toppings (base this on how many you’re serving at one time): jalapeños, onions, tomatoes, cilantro, limes and cheese Directions: 1. Season your pork, place it in the slow cooker, and set it to low. 2. Chop jalapeños, onion and garlic and place them on and around the pork shoulder. 3. Cut orange in half and squeeze juice over the pork shoulder. 4. Close lid and let it cook. 5. During the cook time you can chop and prepare your toppings, and then store them in the refrigerator. 6. Once the meat is breaking apart and tender, carefully lift the pork shoulder out of the slow cooker and place on a larger pan that you can use to shred

The 2nd SHIFT DISTRIBUTION ASSOCIATE full-time position is responsible for filling customer orders for shipment, loading trucks, material receipt, material storage and processing completed orders for shipment via Parcel, LTL, and truckload. The 2nd SHIFT RECEIVING ASSOCIATE full-time position is responsible for receiving inbound materials, unloading trailer and movement of product throughout the facility on a Forklift. Requirements: Must have a strong work ethic with an excellent attendance history. Must be detailed and quality oriented and have the ability to work independently to support facility goals. Previous material handling experience preferred. Experience with Forklifts (or similar), handheld RF scanning equipment, and warehouse management systems a plus. High school diploma or equivalent required. Ability to perform repetitive lifting up to 50 pounds, constant walking, standing, bending, twisting, stooping and reaching. Wage advancement is based on skills acquired and range between $12.10 & $13.85 (includes shift premium). A quarterly bonus with a potential pay out, up to 10% of gross compensation.
