Q: My brother renovated my second-floor bathroom, which included a new tub, faucets, shower, and a diverter. Now, every time I do a load of wash, when the first-floor washer is filling up, a lot of water comes out of my shower faucet. A: I am assuming your brother is not a professional plumber, just a nice guy who was trying to help his sister and save her the services, and thus the expense, of a professional. But you may well need a plumber to unravel this mess. I am not a plumber. Still, I’ve talked to enough of them over the years to have a couple ideas you should have followed up on, at least. If water were coming up through the shower drain as the washer drained, the cause might be a partial clog in the house’s main drain. Wastewater, in this case, would be getting forced back into the shower area by the blockage. Your problem is not wastewater backup, but some sort of crossed supply-line connection that carries water to both shower and washer, instead of one at a time.

Q: Our bathroom sink has a sewerlike odor coming out of it. The only things that go down the drain are soap, water, shaving cream, beard from shaving, toothpaste, and a small amount of hair. I removed the drain pipe, and there is a black, slimy, gelatinous substance coating the inside of the pipe. It wasn’t enough to clog the pipe, but that is the substance that’s smelling. What is the black stuff, and how do we get rid of it and the smell? A: That odor is from exactly what you have been sending down the sink, adhered to the trap by the grease created by soap and skin oil. It happens to everyone, and to every sink. Some people pour a mixture of baking soda, vinegar, and lemon juice into the drain to clear that decomposing mess from the inside of the pipe and make it smell fresh. You might want to periodically clear the hair and soap that sticks to it out of the drain to reduce the opportunity for goo to build up.

Foggy windows can be cleared or replaced

AKRON, Ohio â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Marie Poling thought she was looking at an expense of thousands of dollars to replace all the windows on her Northfield Center Township, Ohio, house. The insulated glass in the homeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bay window had gotten foggy, and she figured her only option was new windows. Then she found out about a process that removes the moisture from inside thermal pane windows. So for a few hundred dollars, she has a clear view once again. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was cheaper, much easier, and very fast,â&#x20AC;? Poling said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was awesome.â&#x20AC;? Polingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bay window had experienced a failure of the seals in its insulated glass units, a common malady of thermal-pane windows. Those types of windows are made by sealing air inside two layers of glass. Over time, expansion and contraction cause the seal to weaken and eventually fail, allowing water vapor inside. When that vapor condenses on cold glass, it creates a foggy appearance. But that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean a homeowner has to replace the window to get rid of the cloudiness. Two methods are available to deal with the problem: removing the glass and replacing it with a new, factory-sealed unit, or drilling into the window to remove the moisture. Both give you back a clear window, but the first method also restores the windowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s original insulating value. The second restores only the clarity, but at a lower cost.

Chad Bradley, the owner of Glass Guru of Macedonia, sprays a drying agent between panes of a thermalpane window as part of a process to remove moisture from a thermal window in Medina, Ohio. Poling chose the moisture-removal option. She hired the Glass Guru of Macedonia, the Northeast Ohio franchise of a California-based company, to defog her windows earlier. The Glass Guruâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s process involves drilling tiny holes

in the glass, removing the stains and moisture, and then plugging the holes with clear plastic vents. The process can be streamlined for windows without stains, because cleaning isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t required, said Chad Bradley, who owns the Macedonia franchise. While the method wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t restore all of a windowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s original insulating value, Bradley said it will reclaim some. He said a thermal pane window with a broken seal loses about 20 percent of its insulating value. After the Glass Guru repair, the loss is reduced to about 10 percent, he said. On a frigid day, Bradley and Josh Clarkston, the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lead glazier, braved 14-degree temperatures to repair a number of windows on a house in Medina, Ohio. Clarkston used a rotary tool to drill two holes in a casement window, one in the top right corner and the other in the lower left. He continually squirted the spot he was drilling with liquid to keep it cool and prevent the glass from cracking. Next Bradley inserted plastic tubing into both holes and pumped a cleaning solution into the top hole to remove the water stains, angling the spray to reach all of the windowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inside surfaces. The cleaner dripped down the glass and drained out the bottom tube into a collection tank, aided by suction from a hand pump. The process was repeated with a rinsing agent, which left streaks and some sudsy residue between the panes. But when Bradley pumped an alcohol-based drying agent into the window and followed by blowing compressed air from an aerosol can into the two holes, the residue disappeared.

Your next refrigerator might not even have a compressor. GE Appliances is developing magnetic refrigeration for residential use, a technology that needs no refrigerants or compressors and promises to increase the energy efficiency of refrigerators by 20 percent. Magnetic refrigeration â&#x20AC;&#x201C; technically called magnetocaloric refrigeration â&#x20AC;&#x201C; is not a new concept, but it hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t yet been used in residential refrigeration. That should happen within 5 years, the company said in a news release. Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s how GE describes the technology: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The system uses a water-based fluid rather than a chemical refrigerant such as Freon to transfer heat from inside the refrigerator and achieve the cooling process. Instead of a compressor, magnets are used to create a magnetic field that agitates particles in the fluid causing it to cool. The strength of the magnetic fields determines how cold the fluid becomes, and in turn, how quickly it cools the refrigerator.â&#x20AC;? The lack of refrigerant also will make recycling used refrigerators easier and cheaper, noted Venkat Venkatakrishnan, GE Appliancesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; director of advanced technologies.

Cleaning and stain removal tips (MC) Whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s carpeting, clothing or upholstery, a new fabric can be ruined at the arrival of that first stain. Spills and spots can quickly mar the surface of any item, transforming a prized possession into an eyesore in a matter of seconds. But knowing how to treat a stain can save such items from the scrap heap and save their owners a substantial amount of money along the way. * Mildew: Rare is the homeowner who hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t battled mildew at one point or another. Bleach and baking soda are the materials most often used to tame a mildew outbreak. Depending on the severity of the mildew, begin with one part bleach to one part water in a spray bottle. Allow this solution to sit on the mildew and then rinse. If this does not work, mix one part bleach to three parts baking soda to form a paste. Use an old toothbrush or scrub brush to scour the mildew, allowing the concoction to set for roughly 30 minutes before rinsing it off. If the mildew is still stubborn, increase the amount of bleach in the cleaning solution. Remember to always clean in a well-ventilated room. Diluted bleach also can remove mildew from siding or plastic patio furniture. Never mix bleach with an acid, such as ammonia or cleaning products that contain ammonia. * Red wine: Anyone who has hosted a party where adults are drinking wine knows the potential for a spill is significant. Red wine can stain quickly, so fast action is necessary to prevent wine spills from causing permanent damage. Use cold water to flush out the stain as much as possible. When cleaning spills on clothing, flush the red wine from the back of stain or the underside of the fabric. This is not often possible when cleaning spills on carpets and upholstery, so in such instances blot the stain with a clean cloth, such as a white rag, that will not transfer any additional coloring to the stain. Sprinkle table salt on the wine stain and allow it to sit for two to three minutes. Rinse thoroughly with cold water while blotting up the excess. Continue to rinse until the stain has dissipated. *Oily stains: Oil and water do not mix, so using water to try to treat an oil-based stain will only exacerbate the problem. The first step to cleaning oil-based stains is to use something absorbent, such as corn starch or talcum powder, on the stain and blot with a cloth. This will help draw some of the oil out of the fabric. Lay paper towels down on a table and place the stained clothing face-down on the towels. Use a dry cleaning solvent on the back of the stain and push down to blot out the oily residue onto the paper towels. Repeat the process until the oil is removed. Apply a laundry pretreatment product or even plain laundry detergent to the stain. Wash in the hottest water that is safe for the fabric and allow the item to air dry. * Pet stains: As young puppies learn to house train, they can leave messes indoors, while cats may soil areas of the home if they are scared or finicky. Pet stains should be treated thoroughly because not only do they look unsightly, but they can begin to smell as well. Leaving odor behind may encourage the pet to urinate in the same area over and over. Plain, white vinegar is a good tool for pet stains. Blot up as much of the urine as possible. Use a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water on the stain. Spray it onto the soiled spot. Blot up the remainder with a dry, clean cloth. Repeat as necessary. To remove any residual odor, sprinkle baking soda on the spot after it has dried. Let the baking soda sit for up to a day. Then vacuum up the powder.
