Bi-County students dance the day away during inaugural event BY JERMAINE PIGEE

STERLING – Justin Richards, a student at Bi-County Special Education Cooperative, was dancing by himself Friday right before the DJ began playing “Teach Me How to Dougie.” Once the dance song started playing, Richards, 18, lit up, dancing like there was no tomorrow as his classmates made a circle around him. “This is a great time,” Richards said, catching his breath, sweat dripping from his face. “This is awesome.” For the first time, Friday afternoon was prom day for Bi-County’s 24 students. Because most of their classes are at the Whiteside Area Career Center, most of the kids don’t have an opportunity to attend prom. “They have watched other students go to prom, and it’s something they have wanted to do for a while,” said Kim Martin, who, along with fellow life skills teacher Taylor Breedlove, organized the event. Students got dressed first thing in the morning at the career center. The clothes the students wore were donated, and Hair Gallery, located in Sterling, did the girls’ hair. Once dressed, the students took a ride in a limousine to the Candlelight Inn in Rock Falls for lunch. After they ate, the students attended the prom at the Rock Falls Community Building. The theme was “Candyland,” with candy deco-

rations throughout the building and miniature pieces of candy on the tables. Students laughed, posed for pictures, and danced to popular songs such as “Shake it Off” by Taylor Swift and “Turn Down for What” by Lil Jon and DJ Snake. By random draw, Richards was named the prom king and Alexis Sleck the prom queen. “We drew names from a hat just to keep things fair,” Martin said. Members of the community had chipped in. Candlelight owner Matt Prescott provided food, Breedlove Automotive in Dixon donated money for decorations, and photographers from Jody Lynn Photography donated their time to take pictures. Brent Martin, owner of American Family Insurance in Sterling, rented the community building for the students. “I always thought these kids went to prom with the other schools,” Martin said. “Every junior and senior should get a prom. I was more than happy to donate the building and help out anyway I can.” Kim Martin said the prom will most likely take place again next year. “Everything turned out so nice, and the kids have been so happy,” she said. “We could not be more thankful that this happened.” Marneesha Glover, 20, said she had never been to a prom until Friday. Wearing a puffy blue dress, she rarely sat still.

Even thought she did not have a date, she danced to almost every song that played during the 2-hour prom. “I’m having a blast,” she said. “I love doing this and I can’t wait to do it again.” Michael Krabbenhoeft

DIXON – The Dixon Family YMCA is the proud new parent of three pieces of strength-training gear that are – and here’s the cool part – wheelchair-accessible. They’re the first of their kind for the building and, says CEO Andy McFarlane, the first of their kind for any public health facility for miles around The Y, which bought the upper-body equipment thanks to gifts from donors, took delivery April 17. Members are invited to come out and check out the new gear this week. The idea to buy the gear came during a brainstorming session at which YMCA executives were looking for unserved corners of the community, McFarlane said. “We’re thinking anybody that is paralyzed from the waist down could come in and use the equipment,” he said. “We could potentially have disabled vets come in. We could also have people in rehab, working closer with our partnership with KSB Hospital. “This could help uplift the services that we’re able to offer to the Dixon community, and we’re really excited about that piece of it.” The equipment that was replaced by the near gear was donated to Reagan Middle School this month. “It’s a win-win for everybody in the community,” McFarlane said. For his part, Kreider Services CEO Jeff Stauter thinks the new equipment is going to mean great things for the community. “With having accessible weight equipment, when you look at the number of people who need it ... mak-

ing a great community asset like the Y even more accessible is a wonderful, wonderful thing,” Stauter said. A lot of places don’t have that attitude, but I’ll say the Y in Dixon is great when

Moline’s fleet of alternative fuel vehicles draws attention from its neighbor MOLINE (AP) – Moline’s use of alternative fuels to power its city fleet has caught attention across the border in Iowa. The Moline Dispatch reports at least 80 percent of the western Illinois city’s vehicle fleet runs on something other than gasoline. That includes electric cars, as well as vehicles and equipment that use an 85 percent ethanol blend, compressed natural gas, propane and biodiesel. The Iowa Clean Cities Coalition has asked Moline’s fleet department to lead presentations on its efforts this

native-fuel vehicles are purchased when it makes financial sense, but said that isn’t always the case. He said the environmental impact is secondary but still important. “You don’t do green for the headlines,” Schulte said. “You make sure it makes sense for the city.” The city has bought three electric cars and seven natural gas-powered vehicles and equipment in the past year. A city analysis of the electric cars’ cost over their lifetime, including purchase price and maintenance, says each will save Moline $5,043 over

buying a sedan that uses gasoline. Buying a Ford F-250 pickup that runs on natural gas saves $25,611, according to the city’s analysis. The city bought four. Schulte said the city could replace as many as 12 vehicles with natural gas-powered models this year, and has six propane-powered commercial mowers on order. “If it makes sense financially to do this, and it’s good for the community and environment, then it is the right thing to explore,” Schulte said.

Fire chief hangs up his hat Thursday Heller gives credit to volunteers BY VINDE WELLS Shaw Media

OREGON – Being able to help his neighbors was one reason Oregon Fire Chief Don Heller devoted the past 38 years to being a volunteer firefighter. “Being there meant a lot to me,” he said. “We get the call, and it’s the worst day of their lives. It was great just to be able to help out your neighbors and see the look of gratitude on their faces when it was taken care of.” Heller, 60, fire chief for the past 14 years, retired Thursday. Al Greene, an assistant chief, will succeed him. A lifelong Oregon resident, Heller, a carpenter, joined the department in 1977 at the encouragement of then-Chief Jim Rosenbalm. He was appointed a lieutenant 3 years later on the all-volunteer department, then became a captain, and chief in 2001. “I enjoyed the camaraderie of all the guys I went through all these years with, and I wanted to give back to the community I live in,” Heller said. He said Rosenbalm and other veteran firefighters were his mentors over the years. “Those early guys shaped you and told you what the department was all about,” he said. “That’s what I’ve tried to instill in the guys today.” Heller had planned to retire last year, when he and his wife, Kathie, moved to Byron. He decided to stay on for a few more months to help get a referendum passed April 7 to add an ambulance service to the fire department. Voters passed the measure by a landslide, 1,251 to

173. “I feel pretty good about that,” he said. Although Heller valued his service to the community, it came with some sacrifices. “You miss out on a lot, time with your family, dinners,” he said. He recalled one Christmas morning when the fire department was called first to a house fire and then to a grass fire. He and Kathie were hosting Christmas that year for both his family and hers. “When I finally got home, my parents were the only ones still there. The dinner was over, the presents were opened, and everyone else had gone home,” he said with a grin. Exhausted, he climbed into bed only to be called out again to an all-night barn fire. “You didn’t think about it,” he said. “You just got up and went.” The biggest fire of his career was a blaze that destroyed the former Carnation Milk plant on Dec. 5, 2007. More than 20 departments came to help. Another memorable blaze, Heller said, was the one that destroyed the First Presbyterian Church. The call came in merely as smoke in the basement. “I remember my wife had just fixed breakfast. I said I’ll be right back,” Heller said with a chuckle. “That was Saturday morning. I got back Monday morning.” Over the years, he spent about 30 hours a week, often every evening, on fire department business, in addition to working a full-time job as a union carpenter. Training to be a volunteer is more demanding now than when he joined, Heller said. “When I first joined, the older firemen showed you what you needed to know,” he said. “Now you need Firefighter II or even Firefighter III.” Regulations are stricter and more numerous.

Co-author of book series dives into new genre with sci-fi offering BY CHRISTI WARREN

CHICAGO – Joshua Russell has been creating stories since he was 8 years old. And now, as one-third of the writing team behind the new young adult scifi series, “The Universe Eventual,” he’s still creating. The first of the fivebook series, “Chimera,” was released Saturday. Russell, 35 and a 1997 Rock Falls High School grad, grew up outside of Nelson, one of five siblings. His parents are Peter and Cindy Russell. In high school, he ran for the cross country team, and in his spare time, he made movies. Except for the whole aging thing, not much has changed. While he teaches screenwriting as a professor at DePaul University during the day, he creates independent films

by night. Russell, along with friend Nathan Beauchamp, and Nathan’s sister, Rachel Tanger, make up the books’ pseudonymic author, N.J. Tanger. The first was written by Russell and Beauchamp, with Tanger editing, but the next books are more of a combined effort by the trio. They’ve already written the second and third, and readers can expect the second book out midsummer, Russell said. So what sparked the idea behind the series? “We probably drank too much Scotch one night and decided we were going to do a book series together,” he said. “So that was 3 years ago.” Russell never has been one for sci-fi, but he delved head-first into the project and gave it his best, which, it turns out, isn’t too shabby.

“It was all fire. Now you’re fire, you’re EMS [Emergency Medical Service], you’re HAZMAT [hazardous materials], and you’re rescue,” he said. “For the most part, the changes have been good.” Heller gave credit to volunteers who are willing to get the needed training. “My hat’s off to them – they sacrifice a lot,” he said. He also appreciates all the cooperation and help from other area departments through mutual aid over the time he has been on the department, especially those that bore the brunt of covering the fire district for the 2 weeks it was without an ambulance service last summer.

Turn up heat with spicy shrimp dish BY LINDA GASSENHEIMER Tribune News Service

Stir-fry some shrimp with hot pepper sauce, garlic, ginger and lemongrass for a succulent, quick, Thai-flavored dinner. Lemongrass is the secret to the flavors in this dish. It adds a tang like that of lemon or lime and is one of the most important spices used in Thai cooking. It looks a little like a scallion with long, thin, green-gray leaves and a lighter bulb at the tip. If you canâ€™t find it fresh, there is a lemongrass paste that works well, or use lemon zest as a backup. To use fresh lemongrass, remove the outer leaves and slice the pale inner leaves and bulb into thin slices. Sesame noodles with snow peas complete the meal. Fresh snow peas add a crisp texture to the noodles. If in a hurry, use microwaveable rice and add peas instead of the sesame noodle recipe. The secret to stir-fry is to prepare all ingredients first and line them up on a plate or cutting board in order of use. That way you donâ€™t have to keep looking at the recipe to know what goes in next. Another tip is to make sure your wok or skillet is very hot before adding ingredients. The oil should be smoking. Helpful Hints: â€˘ Use a food processor to chop

onion and peanuts. â€˘ If using ground ginger instead of fresh, mix it in with the sauce. â€˘ To save cleaning time, make stirfry shrimp, remove to a plate and use the same wok, without washing it, for the noodles. Fred Taskerâ€™s wine suggestion: A big, rich California chardonnay would nicely handle these spicy shrimp. Countdown: â€˘ Stir-fry shrimp dish. â€˘ Stir-fry noodles. Per serving: 310 calories (23 percent from fat), 8.1 g fat (1.2 g saturated, 3.3 g monounsaturated), 276 mg cholesterol, 39.1 g protein, 24.4 g carbohydrates, 3.0 g fiber, 259 mg sodium
