FRANKLIN GROVE – Franklin Grove Living & Rehabilitation Center is expanding. The for-profit continuing care retirement community is adding a 3,300-square-foot therapy gym; six private Medicare suites adjacent to
the gym, for another 3,300 square feet; and a 2,200-square-foot dining room, Kathy Clark, the resident services coordinator, said Wednesday. Thanks to the addition of the gym, the facility now will be able to offer outpatient therapy for new and continuing patients, Clark said. The state-of-theart gym will have a homelike feel, with a kitchen and a laundry room,
she said. One of the neat features will be an indoor car, to be used to help patients practice getting in and out. New bathing suites are part of the package. There also will be a patio and courtyard off the new dining room, she said. HOME CONTINUED ON 2

Work on the footings for the new buildings has begun; construction is expected to be done by the end of October. “We are so excited,” said Clark, who has worked at the 45-year-old center for more than 40 years. “We just think this is so positive, for the community for the area.” The facility, in business for more than 45 years, is owned by Skokie-based Momentum, and provides “a continuum of care” – everything from The Meadows, apartments for seniors who live independently, to assisted living, to short-term respite care, to hospice care. Man killed by train Coroner’s office identifies victim By JERMAINE PIGEE
ASHTON – A man walking along railroad tracks in Ashton on Thursday died after being struck by a Union Pacific Railroad train, officials said.
Andrew Jonathen Ruiz, 22, of Ashton was pronounced dead by the Lee County Coroner’s Office at the scene of the accident near Douglas Avenue. The accident happened at 2:50 p.m., according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Department. When officials arrived, they found a man lying alongside the tracks. Lee County Sheriff John Simonton said an investigation revealed that Ruiz was walking east along the edge of the rail on his way to
work at Crest Foods when he was struck by the train. “The train was traveling in the same direction,” Simonton said. Officials from the Ashton Fire and Police departments, Lee County Sheriff’s Department and the Lee County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene. The Illinois State Police were also on-scene. The accident remains under investigation.

“We’re looking back, but also looking forward,� said Jan Bristol, one of the committee members. “It’s a great place to come home to. It’s not the same as it was, and it never will be the same as it was. But it’s the best small town it can be.� Thomson is a town in the midst of a renaissance. Almost 15 years ago, the state built the 1,600cell maximum-security prison but couldn’t afford to run it. The federal government bought the prison in 2012, and in January 2013, funding was approved to finally activate it. While some workers are on site, the prison likely won’t be fully active for
3 years. But the village already is seeing small, positive changes as a result of the long-awaited prison. “We’re going to have a rough couple of years,� Trager said. “It’s going to be bumpy.� Thomson is bracing itself for an influx of people and vehicles and the inevitable strain on its existing infrastructure. “It’s going to be painful growing, but it’s OK,� Trager said. “It’s expected.� The town is reaching out to the prison, which already has a warden and several dozen employees, and inviting that new group of people to join the fold, starting with the sesquicentennial celebration.
“We want to involve them,â€? Trager said. “As much as this is about Thomson’s past, it’s also about Thomson’s future – and the Bureau [of Prisons, which owns and operates the facility,] is our future. “We are excited to have them here. We are welcoming our new neighbors with open arms.â€? Trager hopes the village can put the past 15 years of disappointment behind it. “The morale here has been so low,â€? she said. â€œâ€Ś We’ve been hanging on by our fingernails for so long. Somebody is throwing us a rope, and we just have to grab that rope.â€?

Happy post-Purim, good people of the Sauk Valley! So, full disclosure: I’m not Jewish, but I have been to my fair share of bar and bat mitzvahs. – usually invited, but once or twice I just kind of accidentally wandered into the party. I also like to write about food, and love, love, love Jewish cooking. So, in honor of one of the most fun Jewish holidays, I decided to teach you all how to make hamantaschen: sweet, triangle-shaped cookies usually filled with some
kind of a fruit, nut, or candy filling. Say it with me: Hamen-tosh-in. Good job! Purim, which fell on sunset, March 4, to nightfall of March 5 this year, celebrates the defeat of Haman (the bad guy) and his plot to kill the Jews, by Esther (the Jewish hero). The story is actually pretty dark as far as hero stories go, and ends in a monumental bloodbath of Persians, but let’s get back to cookies. Hamantaschen are so named for, the Internet says, a variety of reasons. Perhaps they resembled Haman’s ear. Or is it his hat? Or maybe they were popular German pastries that got folded into Jewish tradition because the German word kind of sounded like Haman.
In any case, the most popular telling of the history of modern-day hamantaschen is that the threepointed cookies resemble Haman’s three-pointed hat, which, sure – they do. Cookies!
Hamantaschen dough 1 cup butter or margarine 2 cups sugar 3 eggs 4 cups flour Filling Jam, perhaps chocolate, caramel might be cool, whatever your heart desires Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 2. Mix first three ingredients together, then add flour.

Hamantaschen are sweet, triangle-shaped cookies usually filled with some kind of fruit, nut, or candy filling. In this case, SVM reporter Christi Warren filled them with jam. 3. Using a rolling pin or some other equally hard cylindrical item (wine bottles work in a pinch), roll dough into about a ¼-inch sheet. 4. Cut into 3-inch to 4-inch circles using a cookie cutter (or comparably sized drinking glass, jar lid, etc.) 5. Put about 1 teaspoon of the filling of your choice (I used jam because I’m lazy) into the center of the cookie. 6. Beat one extra egg to create an egg wash. 7. Apply egg wash to exterior edge of circles, and pinch cookies togeth-
er to create the triangle shape. Put more egg wash on the creases to
make sure they stick. 8. Bake for 20-ish minutes, and enjoy!
