DIXON – A Dixon man who pleaded guilty in December to reckless homicide was sentenced to 3 years in prison Wednesday. In June, Kimberly Landwer was dragged for about 20 feet after she reached into the passenger side window of 19-year-old Keith J. Shomaker’s car as he continued to drive. Landwer, 25, fell, hitting her head on the pavement in the 100 block of East Seventh Street. She later died at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria from her injuries.
Shomaker was apparently using drugs around the time of the incident. Reckless homicide, a Class 3 felony, carries a maximum prison sentence of 5 years. Before announcing his decision, Judge Ron Jacobson delicately explained his reasoning, walking through the process that he took to get to his ruling. Most important, it seemed, was Shomaker’s history of drug abuse. During Tuesday’s hearing, Lee County State’s Attorney Anna Sacco-Miller brought up the fact that Shomaker attended an in-patient drug

DIXON – How the downtown streetscape project will happen, and when, became a bit more evident Wednesday at City Hall. During a second public meeting with engineering firms Wendler Engineering Services Inc. and Willett Hofmann & Associates, it was revealed that the project would be done in five phases. Streetscape work, which would include new sidewalks and roads, could start soon after Memorial Day, said Jeff Reis of Willett Hofmann, and be completed by November. Other than the addition of more green space and different locations for trees, little has changed to the project’s aesthetics since the first public meeting Jan. 22. The new development Wednesday was phasing for the work and details for how the firms will try to keep open pedestrian and street traffic on First Street. The first four of five phases would be expected to take between 5 and 6 weeks to complete, Reis said. The fifth phase is expected to take 2 weeks. The order of the first and second phases can be switched, Reis said, if needed, because they’re on the same block of First Street. POLO – A man in early February stopped an 11-year-old boy walking
home from school and groped the child’s genitals, police say. On Thursday, the Polo police issued a news release about the incident, a day after the boy reported it. It is believed to have happened about 3:30 p.m. around Feb. 5 in the 100 block of South Pleasant Avenue. Authorities are looking for the man based on the boy’s detailed descrip-
tion. The man physically stopped the boy and groped him, but did not speak to the youth, according to the release. The boy told police he hit the man in the face, causing him to release the child, who ran home. “The juvenile decided not to tell anyone about the incident until now,� the release said. Before the incident, the
boy had seen the man five different times in the area of South Prairie Avenue and East Mason Street, but hadn’t spotted him since.

IN BRIEF Dead animals lead to cruelty charges MAPLE PARK (AP) – The Kane County sheriff’s office says it arrested a suburban Chicago woman after finding 10 dead animals and others that were malnourished on a pair of farms. According to the Daily Herald, the horse, pony and other animals were found on farms near Maple Park and in
Hampshire in Kane County. The sheriff’s office says 34-year-old Stacy Fiebelkorn was arrested Tuesday and charged with cruelty to animals and failure to provide adequate food, shelter and care. She is free on bond. Authorities say they found “numerous� ill and malnourished animals.

DIXON – The Lee County Sheriff’s Department is warning businesses of a scam involving an international business directory. People are calling businesses, churches and nonprofit groups, claiming to be a directory company verifying addresses by phone or fax to confirm existing phonebook listings, according to the Sheriff’s Department. Once the businesses verify the information, the company
signs them up for services and sends several invoices demanding payment or threatening legal action. The directories are never distributed or promoted as promised, but are simply websites with various business listings, the Sheriff’s Department reported in a news release. The scammers are based internationally, but use post office boxes or mail drops to appear as if they are in the United States.

f you’ve resolved to eat more healthfully in 2014, think soup. It’s filling and, when made with the right ingredients, can make you feel better by the bowlful. “There is research that suggests when you have a bowl of soup before a meal, you consume fewer calories,� said Bethany Thayer, registered dietitian nutritionist and news media spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “The fluid is helping give that sense of fullness.� You need only look to the latest food trends for soup recipe inspiration. Vegetables are everywhere right now, and for good reason. They are loaded with fiber, vitamins and minerals. At Russell Street Deli at Detroit’s Eastern Market, soups are big business (they serve about six varieties on any given day) and the most popular are the ones packed with greens, says chef Derrick Bonds. “We always try to make them as healthy and hearty as possible,� Bonds says. And home cooks can, too: Just go for the greens, says Larissa Shain, a registered dietitian with the Metabolic Nutrition and Weight Management Program at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland hospital in Pontiac, Mich. “Using the green leafy vegetables and cruciferous vegetables means it will be high in vitamins and fiber,� she says. And green veggies, Shain adds, contain chlorophyll, which is rich in magnesium. “Magnesium lowers your risk for strokes, diabetes and osteoporosis.� Shain’s other tips for healthy soups: Use a low-sodium stock (her favorite is Trader Joe’s boxed chicken stock with 70 milligrams of sodium per 1 cup), no-salt-added canned beans and fresh or frozen vegetables. Today we spotlight five soups that taste good and are good for you. They are low in sodium, fat and calories, and high in vitamins and fiber.
Slow-cooker Broth Larissa Shain says you can make your own broth as a base for soups. Here’s how: Place a whole chicken, water and vegetables (onions, carrots, celery) in a slow cooker. Let it cook all day on low. Remove the chicken, pick the meat off it, strain the liquid into a bowl. Cool and refrigerate it. Chill it until the fat rises and gels on the top. Remove and discard the fat.
Spicy Pork and Mustard Greens
Soup Serves: 4 / Preparation time: 15 minutes Total time: 45 minutes ½ pound ground pork tenderloin 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 tablespoon finely grated fresh ginger 1 teaspoon Sichuan peppercorns, crushed ž teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes ½ teaspoon crushed cumin seeds 1 tablespoon canola oil Salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth or stock 4 cups packed torn mustard greens 4 green onions, thinly sliced 2 tablespoons low- or reduced-sodium soy sauce 1 teaspoon fish sauce 8 ounces wide rice noodles Mix pork, garlic, ginger, Sichuan peppercorns, red pepper flakes and cumin in a medium bowl. Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add pork mixture; season with salt and pepper and cook, stirring and breaking up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through, 8-10 minutes. Add broth and bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer until flavors meld, 8-10 minutes. Add mustard greens, green onions, soy sauce and fish sauce and cook, stirring occasionally, until greens are tender, 5-8 minutes; season with salt and black pepper. Meanwhile, cook noodles according to package directions; drain. Divide noodles among bowls and ladle soup over. Adapted from Bon Appetit Magazine, January 2014 issue. Spicy Cauliflower Soup with Almond and Pepper Relish Serves: 8 / Preparation time: 15 minutes / Total time: 40 minutes Kosher salt 7 cups cauliflower florets (about 1 medium head) 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided Ÿ cup slivered almonds (toasted) or Marcona almonds, finely chopped Ÿ cup diced roasted red peppers 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon thinly sliced fresh mint 1 medium clove garlic, minced ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes Freshly ground black
pepper Bring 6 cups water to a boil in a 4-quart pot over high heat. Add 1 teaspoon salt, then add the cauliflower and boil until very tender, 10 to 12 minutes. Drain the cauliflower in a colander set over a large bowl to catch the cooking liquid and let the cauliflower cool slightly. Working in 2 batches, purĂŠe each batch of cauliflower with about 2 cups of the cooking liquid and 1 tablespoon of the butter in a blender until very smooth. Start out using less of the cooking water so you reach the desired consistency. Season to taste with salt. You can make the soup up to 4 hours ahead. In a small bowl, combine the almonds, peppers, oil, mint, garlic and pepper flakes. Season to taste with salt and pepper. The relish can be made up to 1 hour ahead. When ready to serve, gently reheat the soup over medium-low heat. Garnish each serving with a spoonful of the almond relish. Thinly slice two of the chile halves crosswise. In a large saucepan, bring the broth to a boil over medium-high heat. Add the sausage meatballs and cook, stirring occasionally, until browned and cooked through, about 10 minutes. Add meatballs to the soup and bring to a simmer over medium-high heat. Cook 5 minutes more to meld the flavors. Stir the cider vinegar into the soup and season to taste with salt and pepper.
