Dan Fisher explains the restoration process the Fisher House underwent to turn it into a bed and breakfast.

W

hen Dan and Peggy Fisher visited Clinton, Iowa, a few years before Dan was set to retire from the Air Force, they noticed an old Queen Anne Victorian house for sale on the corner of Fifth Avenue South and South Fourth Street and an idea began to materialize in their minds.

“We were home on leave. We just got back from Japan,” Dan, co-owner of Fisher House Bed and Breakfast, said. “Part of my retirement plan after the military was to rehab an old house just as a retirement project.

“I hadn’t ever thought of anything on this scale though. We joked about the house and said it’s a neat house that would be cool to see inside.”

Dan and Peggy went about their business and forgot about the old Victorian for a few months until one day, when Dan was surfing the Internet, he came across a listing for the house and his curiosity returned.

Dan called the real estate agent for the house and his own agent, asking about the house.

“It was in fairly rough shape; it was a foreclosure,” Dan, 50, said. “We thought it would be a cool project, but we also thought,

‘What would we do with something like that?’

“We were originally just thinking of buying a place to live out our retirement. My wife said that porch and the style of the house really lends itself to a bed and breakfast.”

After doing some research, Dan realized the area lacked a bed and breakfast and the rest was history.

After some haggling, the couple purchased the more-than-130-year-old house and began a renovation project that lasted 4 years.

Dan said he and his brother worked on the house 5 to 6 days a week. “It was extensive, quite an investment in sweat equity. ... Ninety percent of the work we did ourselves,� he said.

The bed and breakfast has been open since October 2014 and features four different rooms on the second floor to choose from, each with its own bathroom. There is also a fully functioning guest kitchen.

Each room is named after people who at one time or another occupied the home. “The land was purchased in 1881. We have a census form in 1885 of the Baldwins living in the house, so sometime in that 4-year period, the house was built,� Dan said. “Charles Baldwin was a hardware dealer.

After him and his wife, Martha, passed away, ‌ the house was sold to Frank and Annabelle Ward. Their family owned the house up until the late ’90s or early 2000s�

Each room has its own individual character. Although the house has been completely remodeled and updated, Dan made sure it maintained its historic charm – original fixtures, woodwork and stained glass windows remain throughout the house.

In addition to the house maintaining its original charm, Dan and Peggy have added their own charm. They serve their home-cooked meals family style. “We’re not gourmet chefs, but I think everyone enjoys the way we do the breakfast because they don’t have to cook while they’re here,� Dan said.

As far as future plans for the historic Fisher House Bed and Breakfast, Dan said he is working on renovating the attic to make it a permanent living space for him and Peggy so guests will have more rooms and free reign on the main floor of the house. “When the guests come in right now, I think they feel they’re coming in and intruding in our space because we live [on the main floor]. Where if we’re upstairs, they’ll feel more like it’s part of the social area,� he said.

hat started out as a business venture on a whim quickly turned into a solid foundation and means of income for the Balk family.

Bill Balk, owner of Eagle River Liquors, decided it was time for a change after owning what used to be known as Fulton Recreation Lanes for several years.

“I had a chance to buy this building in a silent auction, and I was the lucky bidder,” Bill, 69, said.

That was 22 years ago.

Bill said despite his enthusiasm, many local

liquor store owners at the time scoffed at his business decision.

“When I started, there were three other liquor stores in this vicinity and they all said I wouldn’t last 6 months. Well now, they’re all gone,” he said with a chuckle.

After Bill purchased what is now Eagle River Liquors, he continued to own the bowling alley for 4 more years, but eventually decided to just focus on ownership of his liquor store, as running two businesses was beginning to take a toll on him.

“When I opened this, I worked 13 years

before I took a day off,” he said.

With the ability to focus solely on Eagle River Liquors, and his sons becoming old enough to help, the business began to blossom.

“Me working here just sort of happened by accident,” said Brad Balk, 41. “I was home from college, Dad had this idea and bought the building on a whim. ... Originally, he owned the bowling alley and I was working more there but it seemed like I fit better here.”

Brad and his brother Rob, 40, both work fulltime at Eagle River Liquors with their father.

Brad said he enjoys what he does and takes the time to hand-select quite a few of the products they sell in the store.

“I do some exclusive whiskey barrel picks about once a year,” Brad said.

Brad travels down to Kentucky and visits several distilleries.

“They literally roll out various barrels to choose from, and I go through and taste them all and select the one I think is the best for the store, he said. “Then they bottle it just exclusively for us.”

Eagle River Liquors, named in recognition of the eagles often spotted flying above the Mississippi River, also houses more than 200 types of craft beer.

“With craft beer, it’s really tough to name a popular kind because it rotates so much,” Brad said. “Craft beer drinkers are always looking for the next beer. There’s very little brand loyalty or even style loyalty.”

“I typically order small amounts of anything, even beers I think are going to be popular, because you never know if you’re right,” he said. “I’m constantly cycling through one product into the next, because people are just onto the next thing.”

Brad added that he is always willing to help a customer select a beer or liquor that would best fit their needs.

“I generally try to get a sense of what they liked before, so I’ve got a baseline of what I think compares closely to it or what they’re kind of leaning towards,” Brad said.

Bill sometimes takes a different approach in assisting customers with their liquor choices.

“I have a lot of older women who will bring a bottle up to me and say, ‘What would go good with this?’ and I usually say, ‘Me,’ and then they just laugh,” Bill said.

He added that what really sets his liquor store apart from many others is the drive-thru window where patrons can pull up and purchase

“We have regular customers that come from all over. ... In the last week, we’ve sold probably $10,000-worth of hand-picked liquor,” he said. s

ooking for a one-of-a-kind item for your home?

A Place in Time in Clinton, Iowa, features creations from more than 25 different crafters at its shop.

Owner Bonnie Ugarph opened her business in October 2014. A crafter herself, she wanted to provide a local outlet for other crafters.

“If you know anybody that’s a crafter, they like to stay making stuff,” Ugarph, 43, said.

“So this gives them a space where they can put everything. They don’t have to do craft shows where they have to worry about setting up and tearing down.”

The shop features an array of items all strategically displayed in a way that truly makes the customer feel as if they are discovering their own special treasure.

The store is filled with hand-made items of all sorts including wall decor, mugs, rugs, soaps, jewlery, cards, candles, wreaths, up-cycled furniture, and much more.

“Even if you came in last week, if you come in this week, you’re going to see something you didn’t see,” said fellow crafter Sallie Pool, 45, who helps Ugarph run her shop. “There’s a lot to see, and that’s why we set up the way we do.

It’s fun to search and feel like you’re finding something.”

In addition to the items being hand-crafted pieces, customers have the option to personalize just about anything in the store.

“Unlike [non-local retailers], you can customize anything. We know the vendors; we can contact them,” Pool said.

“When I was working on furniture, a lot of the pieces [were] from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s and they have served their place in time and now we’re big into up-cycling,” Ugarph said.

“So I get a piece of furniture and paint it and I bring it back to life by giving it a new face, so to speak. Now, it’s serving a new place in time.”

Being a crafter heself, Ugarph said she tries her best to cater to her vendors’ needs. She added her profits also come from the items she sells, and she does not recieve an hourly wage.

Pool said what makes the shop special is how

many different people are contributing to the store.

“When you shop here, you’re not just shopping a local store, you’re shopping at 30 different local stores and every person who puts their stuff here is a representation of our community,” Pool said.

Pool summed up the concept of the store: “It’s Pinterest come to life.”

Impressed is an understatement, according to Pool, when it comes to how much the store has grown. She said she can’t wait to see how else they can expand in the future.

“Over the last 2 years, we’ve had people come and go, and I think right now, we have such a solid core of crafters that we’re a little more stable and now we’re more able to branch out more,” she said. s

A

fter living in fast-paced, trendy Los Angeles, fashion-gurus-turned-coffee-connoisseurs Jay and Jenna Sanders decided to bring a slice of the city to Iowa.

Jay and Jenna both attended fashion school on the West Coast, and shortly after, got their start working at the same fashion shop in Los Angeles.

“We both started working at Gucci on Rodeo Drive, and we kind of hit it off,” Jay, 35, said. “We dated around coffee, and hit it off that way.”

Jay and Jenna discussed owning a coffee shop when they still lived in Los Angeles.

After discussing the idea with her father over the phone, he brought up that there was an open retail space in downtown Clinton – an area he said was in desperate need of a coffee shop.

“The coffee scene, if you will, out here was dismal,” Jay said. “It was just drive-thrus – it wasn’t much of anything as far as specialty coffee. We knew that that was our niche. Craft coffee was emerging in the larger cities.”

For the past 5 years, 392° Caffé, named after the temperature at which coffee begins to roast, has brought coffee lovers from all walks of life out of the woodwork.

“We’re always experimenting with coffee; we’re always getting better.

It’s like we’re selling the experience of coffee instead of just the coffee and food,” Jay said.

In addition to coffee, the shop provides a variety of culinary creations all made from scratch, using local ingredients.

“Any ingredients we buy from the store have to be traceable back to some farm, otherwise we get it from my brother-in-law who has a farm in Morrison,” Jay said. “Over the last 5 years, we’ve gained a ton of loyalty. This area, in general, isn’t very risky with food – they’re very basic. So, we’ve taken them out of their comfort zone and pleased them with the outcome. They expect outside-the-box from us. The L.A. Club is a classic and everyone loves it.”

The L.A. Club consists of turkey, bacon, avocado, spinach, a Parmesan spread, and Swiss on Italian bread. Jessica Baker, a Clinton resident and a regular at the shop for the past 4 years, ordered an L.A. Club shortly after entering the coffee shop.

“The food is amazing; the drinks are amazing,” Baker, 29, said. “The food is definitely a lot more fresh. We know that everything is made in house.”

In addition to sandwiches, the contemporary coffee shop offers wraps, paninis, breakfast burritos, salads and pastries made fresh each day.

When it comes to beverages, the coffee bar offers a variety of caffeinated options including drip coffee, iced coffee, americano, cappuccinos, lattes and more.

arb Suehl-Janis, 67, has been a member of the Kiwanis Club in Fulton for more than 27 years.

In her eyes, it’s essential to give back to the community in as many ways as she can – and that’s exactly what she does.

“I just have always been a person that believes you have to give back,” Suehl-Janis said. “I’m a Barb Suehl-Janis successful Realtor. I do a lot of good business in our community, and I think you can’t just be a taker – you have to give back. It’s just special, and once you start, you want to keep on doing it.”

Barb Suehl-Janis, members of Kiwanis club and other local volunteers also make meals for more than 400 people on Christmas day. They host a Christmas meal at the Fulton Fire Station and deliver meals to the less fortunate around the area.

She’s involved with the Fulton Chamber of Commerce, the ladies auxiliary at Mercy Medical Center, the Quad City Area Association of Realtors and is an active member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church.

She said she thrives on staying busy and active in her community and wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I’ll never be a lady that sits at home and watches soap operas – ever,” Suehl-Janis said.

The Fulton Kiwanis Club has 31 members, and Suehl-Janis serves as secretary.

“Our mission is to serve the children of the world,” she said.

This is something the Kiwanis Club truly takes to heart, especially during the holiday season.

In honor of Suehl-Janis’ late husband, Harvey Suehl, the Kiwanis Club partners with the Fulton Sparkettes, an auxiliary for the Fulton Fire Department, and collects names of all of the children from local schools who receive free lunch and buys them winter attire.

“I don’t know what [the kids] would do if we couldn’t do this project because the secretaries at the schools tell us, ‘It is so nice to see these kids come in with hats and gloves and boots; they’ve been wearing nothing to school for a coat or anything,’” Suehl-Janis said.

She begins shopping for the children’s winter apparel in the first week of November. Last year, the group helped 108 students.

Suehl-Janis said she does most of her shopping after she gets done with work every night.

“I try to do 10 or 15 kids a night,” she said.

“It takes so much time to get them all done.”

That equates to more than a week’s worth of shopping, but Barb’s work doesn’t end there.

She then brings all of the items to her business, where volunteers help her sort through and box up everything.

“It’s funny. We’ll have people come in and say, ‘Oh, is this not a realty office anymore?’

because all they see is just piles of clothes everywhere,” she said.

The clothes are delivered to the children about 2 weeks before Christmas. The delivery is done as anonymously as possible, Suehl-Janis said.

“What’s nice with this project is nobody knows who gave them what,” she said. “The parents can say from Dad and Mom; they can put whatever they want on there. Nobody has to know it came from us. We don’t care one bit; we just want the kids to be happy.”

“We cook all of the meals from scratch; no instant potatoes or anything like that,” she said.

Suehl-Janis attends midnight mass at her church so she is able to help serve the meals on Christmas Day. “You get so much out of it spiritually, mentally and physically. ... It’s so worth it,” she said.

“Just doing it for the right reason makes it all worthwhile.”

Suehl-Janis added she is just a piece of a much larger puzzle when it comes to her volunteer work.

“It’s a real community effort,” she said.

Suehl-Janis said what she looks forward to each holiday season is her 3-hour nap on Christmas Day after all of her holiday volunteer work is finished.

“I am totally ready for my afternoon snooze once I’m done,” she said with a laugh. s

O

ver the years, the Bicycle Station and Jensen Oil Co. in Clinton, Iowa, have gone from pumping gas to repairing automobiles to fixing bicycles.

Although gas stations and repair shops have proven to be profitable, Chad Jensen, the current owner, never dreamed he would turn such a profit from specializing in bicycles.

Chad, 46, bought the business from his father, Fred Jensen, in 2004. It was an automobile repair shop at that time. Fred bought

it from his father, Bill Jensen, in 1968, who founded the business in 1948 as a full-service gas station.

“We still do some automotive work ... tire repairs and oil changes. My dad is 74 this year and is still here helping out every day. I would send him home but he wouldn’t listen to me,” Chad said with a laugh.

Although the business still does occasional work on cars, the main focus is repairing and selling bicycles and bicycle equipment.

Back in 2004, Chad had no idea what was in

store for the future of his business after adding bikes to the mix.

“I thought I was still going to work on cars but I might work on a bike or two here and there – just something fun for me because I was good at it and that evolved into where it is now,” he said. “It was entirely an accident and unplanned. I’m just responding to what’s happening around me. ... It’s worked out great. We’ve stayed very busy.”

The Bicycle Station and Jensen Oil services bicycles of any brand. They accept trade-ins, and sell new and used bicycles. According to Chad, business has been booming the past few years.

“The guideline is, if it came from a bike shop, it’s a good bike,” he said.

“If it came from ... a big-box store, it very rarely is a good bike. It’s what we call bicycle-shaped objects.”

He said when it comes to bike repairs, there is one story in particular that will always stick out in his mind.

“One of the fun things that I did a few years ago, a woman in her 80s found the bike she had rode when she was a child and brought it in and asked us to restore it,” Chad recalled. “It was in a box; basically, it was just torn apart, pieces everywhere. It was dirty and rusty, and we restored it. It turned out looking like a brand new bike.”

The woman who had the bike restored, Phyllis Luckritz, ended up displaying her newly repaired 1941 Schwinn in her home, according to Chad.

“It looked fantastic; she was just so delighted,” he said.

In keeping with the family business tradition, Chad’s wife, Julie Jensen, began working at the Bicycle Station about 2 years ago.

“Chad’s mother has been doing the book work basically the whole time and she’s super good at doing it, but I’m starting to take over that,” Julie said. “I’ve been doing that for a while now, but I’ve been working over in the bicycle shop also.”

Prior to working at her husband’s business, she was a waitress for many years and said she welcomes the more laid-back side of this business.

“Somebody just came in, he wasn’t even looking to get on a bike today, he was just looking to come in and chat,” she said.

Chad mirrored his wife’s sentiments, saying since the business has been around for so many years many locals feel comfortable just stopping by to chat.

“We have people that come in here on a daily basis that don’t need anything,” he said. They just come in to visit, hang out, read the paper.”

He added people tend to have more upbeat moods coming into the business now that the focus is more on bicycle repair.

“We liked our customers a lot when we worked on cars, but when we switched over to bicycles, the customers are in a better mood when they see you because their car isn’t their bike,” Chad said. “If your car is broken all they can think of is, ‘What’s this gonna cost?’ ... Everybody is happier now. It’s fun.” s

atrick Mooney has loved art for as far back as he can remember – especially pottery.

Mooney, 72, has more than 38 years of pottery experience and he founded Rainbow Pottery at River Arts Center in Clinton, Iowa.

Rainbow Pottery is run entirely by volunteers, and their passion for art is the driving force.

“The basic mission that we have ... is not only to be an art museum but also to be a place where art occurs,” Mooney said. “The fact that we’re a not-for-profit business is one of our distinguishing characteristics, because what drives us is not profit. What drives us is service and opportunity.”

From four-wheelers to frogs, Pokemon to Pooh, Rainbow Pottery is filled with hundreds of ceramic molds that people can paint.

In a nutshell, a customer picks out which mold they would like to paint, then they are given a brush and dozens of paint colors to choose from. After they have finished, the painted mold is put into a firing kiln, which gives it a glossy finish and makes it more sturdy.

Then, they can take their newly created pieces home.

About 85 percent of the customers are between the ages of 5 and 12, according to Mooney.

He said he loves molding the minds of youngsters almost as much as he loves molding his clay creations.

“When you come and do this, ... you paint it the color you want to paint it, the way you want to paint it, not the way somebody else is expecting you to,” Mooney said.

This has proven to be difficult in the past, because Mooney said sometimes parents will instruct their children to paint their ceramic molds in a realistic manner. Mooney thinks kids should come in and feel free to be as creative as they like.

“I drive parents nuts when I tell kids to do that, but it’s OK,” he said with a smile.

Although children are the main customers, Mooney said adults should feel free to come in and give Rainbow Pottery a try, too.

“I have adults that come back every month. It’s relaxing,” he said. “It’s the kind of place where you can sit down, be challenged in yourself, ... and still have time to converse with other people and share what you’re doing and learn something.”

The $5 studio fee helps pay for the paints and use of the firing kiln, plus the cost of whichever ceramic piece you choose to paint. Participants can buy more than one piece.

Mooney also said he’s willing to work with families who might not have the financial means to pay for everything.

Mooney said he hopes in the future to get enough funding so Rainbow Pottery can afford to do a free day.

“I would love to have a free day,” he said. “That’s our mission, ... to get people to participate in art activities.” s
