so great for its 15,900 or so residents and those who visit it. Carroll County officially formed in 1839, after being carved from the southernmost region of Jo Daviess County. Today, the area remains largely an agricultural community, dotted with small towns and warm, welcoming people. Mount Carroll is the county seat, while

Chadwick C
hadwick, population 551, is the youngest community in Carroll County, but is steeped in local history. The first settler in the area was Jacob Isenhart, who arrived in 1853. The village was not formally established, however, until 1866, when the St. Paul Land Co. was sent to organize town sites along the stretch of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad line that ran from Aurora to Savanna. One of the things that attracted the land company to Chadwick was the apple orchard owned by Alexander Snow, which had gained a reputation as the apple center of the county. After the town was incorporated, wooden sidewalks were laid. A watering trough was installed at the town pump south of the hotel, kerosene lamps were put on posts at the principal intersections and hitching posts
built in the front of the stores and office buildings. One of the duties of the village marshal was to clean, fill and light the lamps every day. The first railroad station was a box car on the south side of the track equipped with the necessary wiring and telegraph instruments for receiving and sending messages on the movement of trains. A new station was built in 1887. Frank Lacy was the first agent, but was a telegraph operator only. There were no tickets for sale, and passengers paid their fares on the train. One of the worst disasters to strike the town in its early days was a fire that started at the back of Don’s Hardware store on Oct. 13, 1893. Trainmen passing through town spotted the blaze, and used the train whistle to alert the residents to the problem. Citizens awoke and formed a
bucket brigade, but the fire destroyed the wooden building and five adjacent businesses. Chadwick’s residents have also included significant historical figures who are part of local lore. Among the most notable early residents of Chadwick was Peter Bohn. He was born in Germany in 1782, and was one of the 100,000 men enlisted by Napoleon Bonaparte as part of the Federation of the Rhine. As a result, Bohn served in the military invasion of Russia and was one of the few survivors. Later, he moved to America. He and his sons owned 1,144 acres near Chadwick. When he died in 1866 at age 84, he was buried in Chadwick Cemetery. On his tombstone is engraved a mounted soldier bearing the flag of France, and it is said that a medal received from Napoleon is buried with him.

Lanark L
anark, population 1,457, was established in 1861 after D.W. Dame bought the land and laid out the city. The town was named after the ancient capital of Scotland and the home of William Wallace, in honor of the town’s Scottish heritage. As reward for his service to the community, Dame was elected the town’s first mayor. Like other towns in Carroll County, Lanark is proud of its past. One of the city’s greatest attractions is its historic downtown, where the buildings maintain their 1800s charm. In recent years, the town has undergone discussions to renovate some of the buildings in downtown Lanark residents also celebrate its proud history during Old Settlers Days, a festival that takes place in early June. Although Lanark is proud of its past, it also is concerned about promoting itself into the future. City officials have implemented several programs to help encourage businesses to open within the community while continuing to promote existing businesses. One of Lanark’s most unique attractions is the Standish House Bed and Breakfast, owned by Norm and Ingrid Standish. Norm Standish is a direct descendant of Myles Standish, who sailed to America on the Mayflower and became a military leader at Plymouth, Massachusetts. The Standish family moved to Lanark to work on the railroad, and now Norm and Ingrid run their bed and breakfast from their Queen Anne-style cottage at 540 W. Carroll St.

Milledgeville T he village of Milledgeville sprung up around a mill that was built here in 1834. Originally called Old Town, the name was changed in 1886 when Milledgeville was incorporated. As the town grew, it brought in the businesses needed to sustain people on the prairie. Before long, Old Town consisted of several general stores, two hotels, a livery stable, a shoe shop, taverns, a pool hall, several blacksmith shops, a bank, a post office and several other businesses. In an effort to further boost the town, town fathers raised $16,000 to encourage the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad to build a track through it. The line was completed in 1886, and the new depot soon was busy bringing in supplies and visitors and opening the town to the world at large. MILLEDGEVILLE CONTINUED ON 12

A second business district soon developed to the north of the tracks, each street corner was illuminated by oil lamps, and wooden boardwalks were added for the con-
venience of customers. In more recent years, starting in 1953, Milledgeville has been home to the Carroll County Fair, held each August. The town library began a history project in 2006, gathering documents and photos which can be viewed by community members and visitors.

Mount Carroll M ount Carroll, with its 1,684 residents, is proud of its history and small-town way of life. Like other communities in Carroll County, Mount Carroll was established in the early 1830s. Settlers were attracted to the area because of the open stretches of prairie that were cut by the Waukarusa River. The first person to stake a claim in Mount Carroll Township was Samuel Preston Sr., who soon was joined by Paul Otis and Granville Mathews. Over time, other settlers came and a sawmill was constructed to make it easier to build more homes, a tavern and hotel and the other businesses needed to create a new town in the Midwest. By this time, Mount Carroll had developed a wheat market. The local mill was grinding hundreds of bushels
of grain a day and sending a number of teams to Savanna daily, so the flour could be shipped to St. Louis. As the business grew, the mill became a sizable employer in the community. Today, Mount Carroll remains a largely agricultural community, although it also is home to three manufacturing firms. Mount Carroll also has its own medical clinic, which is associated with FHN, a Freeport-based health network. There also is a nursing home, pharmacy, health food store, dentist, two chiropractic centers and massage therapists in town. Since Mount Carroll is the county seat, it is home to the Carroll County Courthouse. An assortment of retail shops, restaurants and offices surround it. MOUNT CARROLL CONTINUED ON 14

Also of interest on the courthouse lawn is a Civil War Memorial, which was dedicated in 1891. In keeping with Mount Carroll’s pride in its history, the town elected to maintain the brick streets in the downtown area.
It also enjoys its small-town values and has adopted the motto “Where we take the time to care.” Mount Carroll is home to the well-known Timber Lake Playhouse, offering one of the finest summer stock theaters in Illinois. Just west of the playhouse is Timber Lake Resort, a campground where visitors can bring their campers or tents or rent
one of the furnished log cabins. Residents and visitors alike also enjoy visiting Point Rock Park along the Waukarusa River, horseback riding at Smooth Gait Ranch, and playing a round of golf at Oakville Golf Course.

Savanna S
avanna has been dubbed a sportsman’s paradise because of its prime location at the juncture of the Mississippi and Plum rivers. The town also is bordered by unglaciated hills, limestone bluffs and thousands of acres of preserved natural wilderness that are unlike anything else in Illinois. This natural beauty has become a major attraction for the city, which draws nearly a million visitors each year. The first pioneers to settle in the area were Aaron Pierce and his wife. They came in 1828 under the guidance of fellow traveler Vance Davidson, who had discovered the area while traveling from Rock Island to Galena. The Pierce family initially took shelter in an abandoned Native American hut until they could build their own home. To earn money, they gathered cordwood, which they sold to passing steamboats for fuel. SAVANNA CONTINUED ON 16

The Great River Trail begins in Savanna and travels south through many small river towns with traditions still steeped in the quintessential culture of the Mississippi River.

Eventually other settlers came to the area, and by the mid-1830s the community boasted a population of 200. The town’s prime location along the Mississippi River made it a major distribution point for commerce and agricultural goods coming in and out of Illinois and Iowa. It also
was a popular stopping point for steamboats running from Galena to St. Louis. In 1862, the Northern Illinois Railroad Co. laid track between Lanark and Savanna. In 1885, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad started laying track in Savanna, as well. To keep up with the growth, city officials began implementing programs to improve the overall quality of life for
Savanna residents by constructing a sewer system, parks, schools and a hospital. In 1929, the state further enhanced the area by buying 54 acres just north of the city for a state park. The Native Americans had called this land the “council bluffs of the upper Mississippi.” It later became known as Mississippi Palisades State Park. This park developed into a major outdoor paradise
for sportsmen and outdoor enthusiasts, who can now enjoy rock climbing, camping, fishing and winter sports in the park. Savanna was also home to several notable characters including NASA Astronaut Dale Gardner, waltz king Wayne King, and MLB player Pete Lister. Current residents enjoy the yearly Riverfront festival, Halloween Haunted Forest, and annual downtown Christmas Walk.

ucked away in the northeastern corner of Carroll County lies the village of Shannon. Founded in 1860 by William Shannon, it now has a population of about 780. The town contributes its growth to the establishment of the railroad, which brought residents and businesses to its streets. It’s a village proud of its achievements, the businesses that call it home, and the quiet way of life it offers its citizens. Shannon’s proximity to the Mississippi River and other attractions make it even more appealing to those who visit it and those who call it home. Shannon’s 2-day Homecoming Celebration is held Labor Day weekend. It includes entertain-
ment, carnival rides and games, a bags tournament, local food vendors, produce vendors, an antique tractor pull, pork chop dinner and the area’s largest parade held at 11 a.m. on Labor Day. Shannon’s Hometown Christmas is held annually the Friday and Saturday before Thanksgiving. The celebration features 15 to 20 businesses and private homes with excellent work by crafters, photographers, bakers, candy makers and much more. On Friday evening, a chili and soup supper is held at the fire station, where the kids can have their pictures taken with Santa and real reindeer. The evening concludes with a lighted parade around the City Park, where hot cocoa and cookies are enjoyed by all.

utdoor enthusiasts love Thomson, which lies on “the Great River Road,” one of the most scenic routes in the United States. The village’s proximity to the Mississippi River – and the parks that line its banks – make it an ideal place to commune with Mother Nature. The village is home to Thomson Causeway Public Use Area, operated by
the U.S. Corps of Engineers, as well as stretches of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife Refuge and the Illinois Mississippi River Trail. It is little wonder that thousands of people descend on this town of about 530 every year to hunt, fish, bike, hike, boat, camp and observe wildlife. Thomson also is famous throughout the region for its watermelons, which
grow into little behemoths in the area’s sandy soil. The crop, and Thomson’s rural way of life, are celebrated every year at the end-of-summer, 3-day Melon Days festival. The town also holds a annual Halloween Party and Fireman’s Pancake Breakfast. It is also the home of a new federal prison, a 1,600-cell maximum-security facility originally built as a state prison in 2001.
