Mount Morris lets freedom ring M

ount Morris, founded in 1848, owes its start to the founding of the Rock River Seminary in 1839 on what is now Kable Square. The seminary was sold to the Church of the Brethren and named Mount Morris College in 1884. The college closed in 1932, but many of its stately buildings remain. Mount Morris has seen its fair share of changes and growth throughout the years. Kable Printing Co., established by twins Harry and Harvey Kable in the late 1800s, later became a part of Quebecor World, a international publishing firm. The plant closed in 2011. The official Illinois State Freedom Online Bell is in its Kable Square. It is the Go to mtmorrisil. centerpiece of the village’s annual net to learn more. Let Freedom Ring Festival, held on July 4. Dedicated by Ronald Reagan in 1963, the bell is rung 13 times each July 4 to signify the original 13 colonies of the United States. The Mount Morris Historical Museum is home to many items representing all facets of village history. The village also is the gateway to White Pines Forest State Park. Pinecrest Community, on the south edge of the village, started as the Brethren Home in 1891. It has since grown to become a significant part of the Ogle County community. The Pinecrest Manor nursing home was built in 1963. The east wing is for skilled care, the west wing is for intermediate care. It also offers an Alzheimer’s care unit, Pinecrest Terrace. The village encourages residents to live a lifestyle that they prefer, whether that be in cottages, apartments, or within care units.

All roads lead to Rochelle

Submitted photo

Transportation is part of Rochelle beyond just its nickname. This 1918 Standard Oil filling station at the intersection of old Lincoln Highway and Lincoln Avenue in Rochelle was the first gas station built in Rochelle. After it closed, it housed several businesses. Today, it’s been restored to its original design and serves as the Rochelle Visitor’s Center and Tourism Office.

R

ochelle is known as the “Hub City” because of its location at the intersection of several major transportation routes. The first transcontinental highway in the United States, the Lincoln Highway, passed through Rochelle, as did U.S. Route 51, one the first highways to go the full north-south length of the United States. The Union Pacific Railroad and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway mainlines

cityofrochelle.net/ cross inside city limits, making the town a mecca for train-watching fans. Railroad Days is the town’s summertime festival, held in June. Rochelle also is the hometown of Joan Allen, a threetime Academy Award nominee, and the 1997 movie “A Thousand Acres” was filmed there.

Submitted photo

Perhaps Rochelle’s most famous resident, Joan Allen was born in the “Hub City.” Allen’s been nominated for an Academy Award three times, including for her role as first lady Pat Nixon in 1997’s “Nixon.” Allen is seen here with Anthony Hopkins, who played President Richard Nixon.

Ogle County state parks O

White Pines Forest State Park

gle County is home to several state parks providing outdoor activities year-round. Each park offers unique views and fun for all ages.

Castle Rock State Park

1365 W. Castle Road, Oregon 815-732-7329 dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/parks/r1/ castle.htm Castle Rock is along the west bank of the Rock River, off state Route 2. It’s representative of the Rock River Hills area, with rock formations, ravines and unique northern plants. A sandstone bluff, adjacent to the river, gives the park its name. Castle Rock is a large butte made up of St. Peter sandstone. There are only a few places in the state where St. Peter sandstone comes to the surface, although it underlies most of the state. It is a great place to hike, picnic, boat, fish, hunt, cross-country ski and toboggan. The only camping allowed at Castle Rock is in a primitive area, accessible only by canoe or boat.

Lowden State Park

1411 N. River Road, Oregon 815-732-6828 dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/parks/r1/ lowdensp.htm Lowden State Park, just north of Oregon, is one of the most picturesque sites along the Rock River. Legend has it that Chief Black Hawk, as he left the area after the Black Hawk War, talked of the beauty of the area and admonished his captors to care for the land as he and his people had. The park is named for Gov. Frank O. Lowden, who served Illinois during World War I. However, it is more famous for its 50-foot statue, The Eternal Indian, commonly referred to as Black Hawk, created by sculptor Lorado Taft in 1911. There are 80 campsites throughout the park, allowing visitors to enjoy outdoor activities such as picnicking, boating, and fishing. Art has played a significant

Lowden Miller State Forest

1365 W. Castle Rock Road, Oregon 815-732-7329 dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/PARKS/R1/ Castle.htm Nestled in the Rock River Valley, 3 miles south of Oregon, lies a 2,225-acre wooded area that is one of Ogle County’s most beautiful and historic sites. Impressive, 120-foot tall bluffs along 3.5 miles of riverfront are forested with hardwood and pine trees. The history of the area stems from the person who, in the early part of the 20th century, augmented the natural hardwood forest by planting pines – Frank O. Lowden, Illinois governor from 1917 to 1921. The forest preserve offers visitors outstanding outdoor recreational facilities, as well as hiking, cross-country skiing and hunting, and an equestrian trail. The site is also a field laboratory for the University of Illinois to conduct research. The forest was designated the first Illinois Tree Farm, thanks to the efforts of Lowden and his family to act responsibly and with love in regard to nature. Go to oglecountyhealthdepartment. org or call 815-732-7330 for the Oregon branch. For the Rochelle branch, call 815-562-6976. Pines Road, Mount Morris 815-946-3717 whitepinesinn.com/ Located in the heart of the Rock River Valley, this charming 385-acre park is the south boundary of the old Chicago-Iowa Trail, for years the principal route east and west across the northern part of the state. Among the park’s most interesting features are the concrete fjords that span the creeks, allowing the visitor to drive through its flowing streams. Two of the four park shelters can be reserved online, while the other two can be used on a first-come, first-served basis. There are plenty of outdoor recreation activities, such as hiking, fishing, camping and picnicking. Those who enjoy winter sports will love the cross-country skiing that White Pines has to offer. Camping is available for $10 a night per site. In addition, there is a modern lodge on site, White Pines Inn. It was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, but has undergone an extensive renovation and now is a restaurant and dinner theater. There are 13 one-room cabins and three cabins with four rooms for visitors to enjoy. The historic lounge, which is part of the main lodge, is filled with crafts and artwork, including a gift shop.
