Catherine Clark, an editor at Offbeatbride.com, says videography can, similarly, be a source of regret. “[Married women] see those popular wedding videos where there’s beautiful music and scenes from all the different things that happen,” she says. “They see those and they get jealous.”

Wedding coordinators, who handle logistics on the Big Day, are also a hot topic at Offbeatbride.com, with some brides saying they wish they had made that investment. For roughly $250 to $750, a coordinator will function as your go-to-person, doing set-up, herding friends and relatives, and making sure the ceremony and reception run smoothly.

Pastor offers custom weddings The Rev. Porter has done more than 500 marriage ceremonies

STERLING – Almost 30 years ago, the Rev. Scott Porter waved an emphatic, noncommittal hand.

He was 22 and newly ordained. He had hardly presided over a congregation, and he had never performed a wedding. He was apprehensive.

But back then, his pastor at Abiding Word Church had every confidence the young man would perform a lovely wedding for his friends.

Porter joined the 50-something-yearold man and woman in marriage – both for the second time – and since has performed more than 500 weddings for members of the nondenominational Christian church, of which he now is pastor, as well as for non-members.

White doves can add beauty, symbolism to any ceremony

auk Valley brides and grooms looking for a symbolic way beyond tossing rice or blowing bubbles to celebrate their happiness have another option: releasing white doves.

John Paul Schilling, 41, of Schilling Funeral Home in Sterling, and his fatherin-law, Mark Stanley, are the local purveyors and trainers of the ethereal doves of love – in this case, actually, white homing pigeons.

They started off with nine, and have since bred about 75.

Doves symbolize love, peace, happiness, and prosperity. Their color, Schilling says, “represents the bride and groom as they begin their life’s journey together in purity and with no regrets of their past.�

There are a few options when it comes to the release. The bride and groom each can release a dove as they walk out of the church, or at an outdoor ceremony.

As the doves fly higher and higher, then wing their way home, it symbolizes the

Porter requires couples to go through premarital counseling. For members of Abiding Word Church, he and the couple meet about four times before the marriage. For nonmembers, he and the couple meet at least once.

Each meeting lasts only about an hour but covers a lot of ground. “We talk about God, we talk about Jesus Christ, and we talk about the ‘big three’: communication, sex and money,â€? he says. “It all comes back to communication. ‌ They get married, they have kids, and they quit talking to each other or quit listening to each other, and then the kids are all grown up and leave the house and they look across the table and see some-

Porter relies on his personal experiences – he and his wife, Terri, have been married for 30 years – as well as the poignant stories he has amassed from doing more than 500 weddings over the years to relate to couples. “I tell lots of stories,� he says. “I share experiences with couples who have made it and others who haven’t.�

Porter ends his ceremonies with a unique blessing. “In Whiteside and Lee counties, if you look on a marriage license, you’ll see a man’s hand and a woman’s hand, and they’re shaking hands,â€? he says. “So at the end, I have [the couple] join right hands [and shake on it]. “It used to be that if you shook on something, you gave your word. Your word was your bond. ‌ I tell them, ‘Keep your word.

hopping for a bridal gown is a special experience for any bride, regardless of her style or dreams.

The Dressing Room at Déja Vu offers brides the opportunity to buy designer gowns without the designer price tag.

Owner Lou Ray began The Dressing Room 2 years ago because of a great opportunity that arose.

“Deja Vu had been open, selling antiques, for 5 years and we had not done any bridal,” she said. “I knew a lady that had a bridal salon who was retiring. She made the offer to sell her gowns to me, and that is where I began with bridal. Now I have three salons that send their overstock to The Dressing Room.”

Because of that, brides can find dresses from designers such as Mori Lee, Alfred Angelo, Allure, Allure Couture, Maggie Sottero, Blu by Enzoni, Eden Brides, Emerald, and Paloma Blanca.

The shop also has had a dress from the popular television show “Say Yes to the Dress,” which helps to illustrate the types of gowns that brides can buy off the rack at The Dressing Room.

Those dresses average between $300 and $500, however, during the summer blowout sale, dresses cost from $99 to $200.

Ray has found that brides want “what no one else has, to be unique.”

“Some brides want a fancy bridal gown,” she said, “while others choose something more simple.”

Although the bird cage veil is highly coveted, she has found that trains and veils have diminished in popularity, producing avenues for creativity for brides.

“Many of the dresses have trains,” Ray noted. “I have seen several brides during the alterations phase cut off trains and create sleeves. They have also used the extra fabric for other parts of their wedding.”

The Dressing Room also carries bridesmaid, mother of the bride, and flower girl dresses.

Ray has seen jewel tones rise in popularity, as individualism continues to become an important part of the wedding party.

By wearing her own color and style, each girl has the opportunity to show off her style.

Fitting Room provides professional tailoring and alterations for tuxedos

he Fitting Room provides engaged couples with professional tailoring and alterations for tuxedos, wedding dresses, and bridesmaid dresses. The store has been in business for more than 40 years; Tina Lira has been the owner since 2010.

Tina went to school in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, to train as a seamstress and to do alterations.

“At that time I just did alterations and made clothes for some family and friends,” she said.

But for 30 years, after coming to Rock Falls, Lira worked in occupations unrelated to her training and special talent. “A couple of my friends, really sweet friends, talked me into buying the business,” Lira said.

The Fitting Room works with Nedrebo’s Formal Wear, out of Madison, Wisconsin, as its tuxedo provider. The future bride and groom can scan through the store’s sizable catalog of this year’s styles and colors in Tuxedo fashions.

“Couples can choose any color or style they like,” Lira said.

Lira, along with her children Edson and Carla, take measurements and the tuxes are delivered to the store. The groom and groomsmen then come in to be fitted. If additional alterations are necessary, the Liras are ready to provide that service.

“We make sure that the pants are the right size for everybody,” Lira said.

Julie Grell, owner of Lundstrom Florist and Greenhouse, and Katy Selmi Downs, owner of Selmi’s Weddings and Events, offer up tips and advice for brides-to-be on how flowers can enhance their special day.

Both agreed that 6 to 12 months before the wedding is not too early to contact a florist. However, brides with a time crunch need not despair.

“We can work with just about any time frame,” Grell said. “We once had a frantic call needing flowers the same day.

Within an hour, we had a silk bouquet and boutonnière ready to go.”

The same goes for working with a budget.

“Personal flowers [such as bouquets] should have the biggest impact as they will be in your wedding photos forever,” she explained.

More and more brides are going with rental centerpieces to save on expenses.

Since centerpieces are not frequently in wedding photos, personal flowers should take center stage. The trend toward rental centerpieces saves on the cost of buying vases, candles and flowers. Table mirrors and flameless candles can also be rented.

With the advent of Pinterest – a popular virtual-idea website – many brides have already “pinned” favorite floral arrangements for their wedding day. Both Grell and Downs encourage brides to bring their “pin boards” or other photos so they can get a sense of the bride’s vision.

They have everything from back drops, netting and light swags above the dance floor, to huge lanterns hanging from the ceiling and rose petal aisle runners, Downs said.

“Most of them have been researching and planning this day their whole life, so they know what they want,” she said.

“Some brides do need suggestions, and we are able to share photos from the many events we have done to help them decide.”

Fresh flowers are still more popular that artificial, but care should be taken to select flowers that will stand up to the season and the venue.

“Make certain that if you have a summer wedding, you choose flowers that hold up well in the heat,” Downs advised. “Some flowers will not hold up very long in the heat for photos, and that can be a concern.”

The hardiest flowers include roses and orchids. They hold up well in both heat and cold without showing signs of stress.

More delicate flowers such as stephanotis, sweet peas and gardenias require the skill of a trained floral designer to help prolong their freshness.

Have a special or out-of-season flower in mind? For the most part, just about any flower can be ordered for just about any season.

“Sometimes they are a bit more costly,” Downs cautioned, “But my suppliers can get just about anything anytime of the year.”

Both women agree that roses continue to be the most popular bridal choice, but other flowers and design elements are trending, such as peonies, calla lilies and hydrangeas. For fall weddings, pumpkins and gourds can make for impressive arrangements.

“We have seen a trend toward shades of purple the last couple years,” Grell said. “Brides are also going more simple and natural, incorporating more baby’s breath, burlap and lace into their arrangements. Others are opting for single-stem bouquets and centerpieces.”

‘Share life’s moments’ Photographers can focus on the couple

ouples considering a photographer for their coming weddings have some good options in the Sauk Valley Area. Two excellent photography studios are Onsight Photography and Timestilling Photography.

Onsight Photography is owned by Amy Yonk. Her father was in the Air Force, so she traveled the world as she grew up.

“I was born in Germany and have lived in Houston and Fort Worth, Texas, New Mexico, Missouri, and I graduated high school in Germany,” Yonk said. “I’m a firm believer and supporter of our military.”

Like many, Amy honed her craft through years of personal experience.

“Photography has always been a hobby, since I was a little girl,” Yonk said. “I’m a retired accountant now, and I just had the opportunity to start my own business.”

We adjust easily, and do the kinds of pictures the couples think would be good. We just have fun. I guess you could say we’re laid back and easygoing.

“If they book a wedding through her, we both shoot,” Yonk said. “And if they book a wedding through me, we both shoot.”

Yonk and Anderson have received a lot of compliments from clients for the way they work together on shoots.

“We’re just good at reading people, and figuring out the kinds of pictures people want,” Yonk said. “We adjust easily, and do the kinds of pictures the couples think would be good. We just have fun. I guess you could say we’re

laid back and easygoing.”

Yonk and Anderson are so easygoing that they sometimes end up going above and beyond for their clients.

“We just try to help with everything,” Yonk said. “One time the flowers fell apart, so we pitched in and helped put them back together.”

Yonk suggests that couples schedule nine months to a year ahead of the wedding to secure Onsight’s services, “Though in the off season we have been able to fit weddings in within six months,” she said.

Traveling is still one of her loves.

“My husband, kids and I traveled with Rock Falls High School Fine Arts group to Paris, and Provence, France, Barcelona, Spain, and London,” she said.

So traveling to capture the moments on your special day, throughout northern Illinois and eastern Iowa, is a walk in the park for Yonk.

She hopes to keep growing her business and continue to offer affordable professional photography to the Sauk Valley Area.

“I was born in Transylvania, but it’s not like what you’ve seen in the movies,” he said, laughing.

That area, now part of Romania, was under communist rule for Horatio’s early life, but he said throughout their struggle they held on to hope that one day Americans would liberate them.

“It didn’t happen the way we thought, but through the accomplishments of Reagan and Gorbachev, and the revolution,” he said.

Nicoara said that when he was young, his heroes were the American soldiers. He loved and admired the United States, its freedoms and the potential it holds for anyone to achieve the American dream. It wouldn’t be long before he would find himself pursuing his dreams in the U.S. himself.

“Photography was, first, just a passion that developed as I grew up,” Nicoara said. “I had an uncle who showed me things about black-andwhite photography and how to develop film in dark room. Back then, not everybody had a camera; now everybody does, but I was one of very few who would carry a camera everywhere I went; on vacation, on a road trip, just enjoying myself and providing people around me with memories.

“I didn’t look into making it a business or career; it just happened,” he said.

While at earning a degree to teach physics, Nicoara worked as a DJ. “I had developed a portfolio taking pictures at concerts in Europe,” he explained. “I was interviewed by a major corporation from the U.S. that was looking to develop professionals, and I had the portfolio to show.”

After several years’ working with that company in the U.S., Nicoara set off to achieve his own American dream with Timestilling Photography in 2008. He ran into Nasko, who was also originally from eastern Europe. The two began
