Andresen Nature Center springing to life on the banks of the Mississippi

I

t’s a new attraction with a simple mission: teaching the public, and especially children, about the quiet joy nature can bring to their life.

After a year of gathering exhibits and renovating the former residence, the Andresen Nature Center is blossoming on the banks of the Mississippi River, at 409 N. Fourth St. In displays both permanent and seasonal, it offers its visitors up-close views of all kinds of little wonders: hides and pelts of native animals, a see-through beehive, various mounted animals, including a tom turkey, several other local birds and a cougar that once roamed the county, now perched in mid-stride on a rock.

The live versions of other critters, including deer, eagles and a bushytailed black squirrel, often can be seen through the center’s windows.

The mission of the city-owned center is “to educate, inspire, and encourage all to have an appreciation for our natural environment through exploration and demonstration,” Executive Director Kyle Kopf said in a

email last spring, as he was readying the two-story home, where he now lives, for its new life.

It’s a joint venture with the Whiteside County Soil and Water Conservation District, which had been looking for a permanent location to provide lectures and field trips, said Kopf, a Fulton native.

One room in the home is a lecture hall, and there’s also a nature and science library.

In the works is a large panel showing the 4-billion-year timeline of the history of Earth. It will include milestones in the natural history of the Fulton area, and answer questions such as: When did the local limestone rocks form? When did the Mississippi River first cut a valley through the area? When did the first Native Americans settle here? What now-extinct species once roamed the countryside around Whiteside County?

INSIDE AND OUT In the meantime, there are several other geography exhibits, and the

center’s outside is as interesting as the inside.

The property is about 100 yards from the riverbank, in a section where the Mississippi narrows considerably, and is bounded by vaulting bluffs and beautiful views on either side. About a third of the site is wooded, and it’s connected to even more woods.

Heritage Canyon is adjacent to the north.

The Center’s grounds will be planted with native wildflowers and grasses “to give visitors a feeling for what the county’s prairies were like prior to their being broken up for agriculture,” Kopf said.

Also as part of its mission, the center is offering a couple of summertime camps for preteens, one for bug lovers, and one for potential engineers.

Hours, at the moment, still are a bit sketchy.

Groups and others who would like to visit are asked to call several days in advance, so a volunteer will be available.

Speaking of volunteers, the Andresen Nature Center needs some – more volunteers, more hours. Folks

What’s in a name?

The nature center is named for a longtime local elementary school teacher who loved her little house on the river.

Arliss L. Andresen, who taught in Ashton,

Chadwick and Morrison schools, was 82 when she died on Oct. 16, 2012. She left her beloved home and its acre or so of land to her brother and sister, Harold Andresen of Chadwick and Darlene Ladd-Hogan of Farmington, Maine, and to a Fulton church.

According to Arliss’ obituary, posted on the

Law Jones Funeral Home website: “One of her greatest joys came from living by the river and the wildlife that would come right up to her house. Arliss loved to feed birds and squirrels, and loved watching the deer.”

She worried what would happen to her home once she was gone, and wanted somehow

“She loved that place, ...” he said. “She was always very careful that no trees were taken down that didn’t have to be, that sort of thing.”

So after Arliss died, he bought out the church’s share, and he and his sister donated the site to the city of Fulton, on the condition that it be turned into a nature center in her memory. s

About Andresen The Andresen Nature Center, 409 N. Fourth St., in Fulton, is open for special events and by appointment. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.

The center has an evolving wish list that includes a new frontage sign, and volunteers are needed to staff the center this summer.

Camps for kids The Andresen Nature Center, 409 N. Fourth St. in Fulton, is offering two camps for kids this summer: In Bug Camp, fourth- and fifth-graders will get up close and personal with creepy-crawly critters, collecting and learning all about insects, performing experiments with insects, dissecting arthropods, and so on.

The 4-day camp will run from 9 a.m. to noon July 6-9. Cost is $30; camp size will be limited to 20.

In Engineering Camp, middle-schoolers will learn about science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and the impact engineers have on society, through a variety of hands-on projects and activities such as catapults, egg drops, spaghetti towers and magic trains.

The 4-day camp will run from 9 a.m. to noon July 20-23. Cost is $30; camp size will be limited to 20.

Journey of Love For James Criss, the cause remains

H

ow do you get from Fulton, Illinois, to Seoul, South Korea? James Criss got there by way of a cause.

Criss has been around the block a few times and has lived in some of the largest cities in the world. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in architecture through the University of Illinois, at Chicago, and his first job out of school was in Washington, D.C., but he says it was the character and the example of his parents, and growing up in Fulton, that prepared him for the work that would become his life passion: fighting the worldwide scourge of human trafficking.

“My parents were just a huge influence on me. They were the type who, while eating out, would hear about someone planning on camping out because they didn’t have a place to stay the night, and they would have them stay with us. They were very discerning of the needs of others,” Criss said.

The way the people of Fulton support, help, and get to know each other also affected Criss’ development. “I remember, during the Flood of ’93, seeing the community support each other. I signed up with dad to walk the dikes to see if there were any leaks. Everyone helped to support those whose homes were destroyed,” he said.

While the cause of human trafficking wasn’t talked about at the time, the message that it’s up to us to “love our neighbor” got through to James through his parents’ actions.

“I had 27 foster siblings while I was growing up. I shared a room with one of those who was with us for 2 years. Joey had mental and physical issues. That experience allowed me to practice how to treat people with difficult issues in their lives, and learn how to make connections with them. It helped me to know how to pray for them, and how to help people, now, who have gotten stuck into this cycle of violence,” Criss said.

When asked how he would define human trafficking, Criss responds with passion.

“Human trafficking is one type of modern-day slavery,” he said. “It is the business of stealing humans and turning them into a commodity that fulfills an evil demand. This supply of humans are those without protection who are tricked and held in slavery through violence.

Some obvious examples are runaways, orphans, children who live in supremely poor families whose parents must work constantly to provide food for the family and therefore are not physically able to protect their children. The demand includes the sex industry, black market organ transplant industry, and child soldiers. It is difficult for me to even describe it in this way, because it sounds more “business” than “human rights,” but that is the sore truth. If the business of sex trafficking and other human trafficking wasn’t so lucrative, it would cease to exist. At the core, it’s economics,” he said.

The problem is becoming more visible in the public eye, but Criss said he was unaware of it for much of his life. “My wife, Jane, and I had decided we wanted to work in Washington, and as it turned out, she got the first bite, working for the Department of Defense,” he said. A friend from church told him of an opening for a position at the International Justice Mission. (IJM is a global organization that protects the poor from violence.) “I knew nothing about these issues at that point, but God quickly broke my heart for the whole problem of world-wide human trafficking,” he said.

Criss worked as a project coordinator for IJM until this past February. He and Jane had always talked about moving to Korea someday, as that’s Jane’s heritage, and it so happened that a Department of Defense job opened for Jane. So the couple moved to the other side of the world.

Criss’ work with IJM had involved connections with organizations in Seoul, who were also concerned about the human trafficking problem. “I knew of Onnuri Community Church, because of their justice work in Korea. It’s a 60,000-member mega-church, and the pastor has been focused on wanting to end human trafficking,” Criss said. So he began volunteering a day per week with the justice ministry of the church, but it wasn’t long before one of the pastors of the church told him, “One day a week isn’t good enough for us.” As of this writing, plans are in the works for Criss to play a pivotal role in the church’s effort to stem the tide of slavery in South Korea, and around the world.

While the big cities have provided him with his education, and with a platform from which to make an important contribution to justice in the world, Criss misses the simplicity of small-town life. “I like my privacy and space. Clinton was once home to lumber barons in a booming industry that employed thousands

BY KAYLA HEIMERMAN SPECIAL TO RIVER CITY LIVING linton once was known as the “Lumber Capital of the World.� The city along the mighty Mississippi River once was second in production only

to Minneapolis and accounted for more than 40 percent of the lumber cut in Iowa.

The Clinton mills at their peak supported two-thirds of the population and employed nearly 30 percent of all men.

The lumber industry in Clinton, which at the time was actually two cities, Clinton and Lyons, began in the mid-1850s, when would-be lumber barons W. J. Young, Chancy Lamb, and David Joyce came to the city. Young built the first of the great lumber mills in 1860, while Lamb founded his mill in 1857, and Joyce laid the foundation for the company that would bear his name in 1861.

The industry boomed, and with it, the population of the two cities. People built houses and started complementary businesses, such as those that made window sashes, doors, and moldings to outfit the building boom.

timber of Minnesota and Wisconsin, and because of its connection to the railroad, which fanned westward.

Lumberjacks cut down trees and floated log rafts down the river from the forests of Minnesota and Wisconsin. The sawmills cut those logs into lumber in Clinton, then shipped them west on the railroad to settlements of the nearly treeless prairies of Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado.

But Clinton was not successful only because of its proximity to river and rail. Clinton topped the ranks because its lumber barons were savvy businessmen who introduced the concept of vertical integration; that is, they owned the timber; controlled the lumberjacks; and owned and operated log rafts, sawmills, and lumberyards, said Matt Parbs, director of the Sawmill Museum in Clinton.

Before 1870, the Clinton sawmills were competing against other mills along the Mississippi River; all of them relied on Minnesota and Wisconsin timber owners to provide them with logs. But in 1871, Friedrich Weyerh채user of Rock Island

The lumber industry was at its peak from about the mid-1880s to the early 1890s as western expansion, and in large part, the railroad, created a demand for lumber.

At that time, Clinton and Lyons were home to 20 mills, and the industry employed 3,000 to 5,000 people (out of a population of about 20,000). For some years between 1870 and 1890, Clinton produced more lumber than any other city on the Mississippi River except Minneapolis.

In the 1880s and ’90s, Clinton boasted 13 resident millionaires, more per capita than any other city or town in the country.

But by the mid-1890s, after an economic depression in 1893 that slowed demand for lumber, and with the depletion of the forests in Wisconsin, mill activity ground to a crawl. By 1897, most of the mills in Clinton had closed. Practically overnight, 5,000 of the 22,000 people left the city. Between 1896 and 1906, fewer than 20 houses were built in Clinton.

In 1906, the last log raft came down the river to Clinton, Parbs said.

Despite its relatively brief stay, the lumber industry and its lumber barons left lasting marks on Clinton.

The Youngs, Lambs, and Joyces contributed much of the social glitter to Clinton The museum has a collection of vintage and antique chain saws as well as many other tools and pieces of equipment used in the logging industry.

as well as provided much of the leadership and financial foundation for nearly every civic enterprise during the city’s formative years.

The mills spurred the development of public utilities and infrastructure.

And the lumbermen and their families contributed to Clinton National Bank, the former Jane Lamb Hospital, the library, the YMCA, the YWCA, even Eagle Point Park.

“Clinton was defined and funded by these lumber barons,” Parbs said.

“It became really a part of our identity, our heritage. The everyday things we identified with have a connection to the lumber industry.”

Today, the last remaining mill connected to the heyday of the lumber industry in the Clinton area is the small Struve Mill in Hauntown; it is not in operation. The Sawmill Museum has many pieces of equipment from the mill in its permanent collection.

Processing such a large quantity of fish yields a large amount of waste, and at one time, the plant had to dump the waste at the landfill, which was not at all cost effective. Schafer started to think about all the nutrients in the waste they were just throwing away and decided to apply for a grant to divert that waste stream away from landfills and use it to create a new product. The family was awarded a $150,000 grant from the USDA Rural Development Initiative, which allowed them to start the process of creating a liquid fertilizer from their fish waste.

after purchasing the kit. People usually tend to purchase a car, then upgrade it with different shocks, motors and other accessories.

Along with the great selection of RC vehicles, D&D also carries drones.

If you’re looking for something small to fly around the living room, he’s got it. For around $35 you can purchase a tiny drone, and if you’ve got your sights set on something large that you can mount a camera to, well, he’s got that too – just bring your checkbook; those will run you around $500. He also stocks the shop with replacement parts for the drones.

Drones aren’t the only winged things you’ll find at Temple’s shop. He also carries a few helicopters and accessories at the shop, but they seem to be diminishing in interest. Temple says that helicopters can be extremely difficult to fly, so more and more people are choosing to pick up drones, which are much easier to fly and maintain.

If plastic model cars are your thing, you’re in luck. From futuristic models to your classic 1955 Chevy and most everything in between, D&D has more than 300 kits to choose from. The kits are moderately priced (compared to RC kits) and can take anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks to complete, depending on your skill level and attention to detail.

One unique feature about the shop – at least to the area – is that there is an outdoor course. The track is open on Wednesday evenings from 6 p.m. until everyone goes home, weather permitting. Temple says he tries to leave by at least midnight, but sometimes stays even later. He says it’s less of a “race track” and more of a place where everyone can bring their cars and just have a good time and talk about cars.

From 10- to 12-year-olds to the older generations, RC enthusiasts are all welcome at D&D. It’s the kind of shop where you might wander in not knowing exactly what you’re looking for, but you’ll leave with exactly what you need. Asked whether people ever worked on their cars right there in the shop, Temple said with a smile “Constantly; the place is never clean”. s

Millcreek gives golfers a scenic course to send their discs sailing

f spending time and money at a gym just isn’t your thing, consider disc golf. Fulton’s disc golf course at Millcreek Park is 9 holes on easy-to-navigate terrain that’s the perfect course for beginners. It’s easy on your pocketbook too. After the initial investment of your throwing disc (around $10) you’re set – no

more out-of-pocket expenses on your end. Not only is it a fun, affordable way to stay fit, it’s a great family activity. Mom and Dad can bring the kids and let them explore the park while you focus on your game.

The course was established in 2004, with the help of designers Brad Balk and Chad Eng, and welcomes disc golf enthusiasts from all areas.

Balk, a longtime disc golfer, thought it would be a great use of space to build the course in a

virtually unused area along the river. Because the terrain was fairly easy to navigate and elements of the course could easily withstand a flood (which tends to happen when the nearby Mississippi River goes up), this was the perfect solution.

Wander up the dike for a gorgeous view of the Mississippi, and take a rest along one of the many

benches that sit along the walking path.

Balk worked with the city of Fulton and other local business owners to fund the course.

Near each tee pad you’ll see signs for local businesses that helped fund construction for that particular hole, including the tee pad and basket. However, the city maintains upkeep of the park.

Balk, along with experienced golfer and designer, Chad Eng, designed the course after working on many other courses in the Quad Cities area. Like regular golf, disc golf courses can have nine holes, or 18 holes. The area the two men were given to use allowed for just nine holes, which is another reason that this course is great for beginners. Depending on your pace,

experience, and the terrain of the course, nine holes can take anywhere from 1 to 3 hours. Disc golf courses don’t usually come with golf carts, and Millcreek is no different, but it’s a great way to get in a low-impact workout by walking.

Situated around a soccer field with plenty of open space, it’s a great place to bring your little ones ,who can run free and exert energy.
