Jack Nicklaus has introduced his own line of premium ice cream, as part of the golfer’s ongoing efforts to introduce consumer products with a philanthropic tiein – this time with the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation. To bring the product to market, Nicklaus teamed up with Schwan’s Global Supply Chain Inc. to produce seven flavors of ice cream: Warm Spiced But-

The product was introduced earlier this year in select Kroger, Winn Dixie, and Bi-Lo stores, and if the pilot program is deemed a success later this year, sales of the ice cream could go nationwide. Beyond the ice cream pilot program in 2015, Jack and his wife Barbara hope to tie in other children’s charities to sales of the product. Golf’s “Golden Bear” said “he never had so much fun
in the research and development of a product.” Among other Nicklaus-branded or licensed products introduced in recent years that benefit children’s charities are water, wine, lemonade, sunglasses, and golf balls. According to a news release at nicklaus.com, Nicklaus, a recent recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal – the highest honor the U.S. Congress can bestow on an individual – and Barbara are devoted to myriad philanthropic efforts, most of which are focused on children’s health care. In 2004, the Nicklaus family founded the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation with the goal of providing families access to world-class pediatric health care.

He’s still on course But for Don Schuldt, that course has taken a new direction: tending to greens instead of teeing off of them BY BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5551 @BrianWeidman Some might say Don Schuldt is missing the best part when it comes to golf, but he doesn’t see it that way. The Sterling resident was once an avid player, but now rarely touches a club. He’s played three times in the past 8 years – in a couple of scrambles, and a family outing that was shortened from 18 holes to nine due to rain. He misses teeing it up, but only up to a point, because he’s around the game so much. He’s the head superintendent at Deer Valley Country Club, south of Rock Falls, and at Green River Country Club, just outside of Walnut. When not tending to those courses, chances are he’s
watching his daughter, Ember, play golf. Ember was a former Sterling High School and University of Illinois standout, and now is taking a whack at becoming a professional golfer, on mini tours in Arizona and Florida. It’s golf, golf and more golf for Don Schuldt – just not the kind most people crave. “I love the game,” he said, “but now my focus is in different areas than it used to be.” Seven days a week, especially this time of the year, he spends time at Deer Valley, where he is entering his fourth year as superintendent, and Green River, where he has been in charge for 6 years. At Deer Valley, he has a staff of 10 that he sends out at 6 a.m. 3 days a week to mow fairways and tees. The rough gets clipped 4 days a week, and greens are mowed every day. SCHULDT CONTINUED ON 11

Schuldt: A supervisor par excellence SCHULDT
CONTINUED FROM 9 The earlier the mowing gets done, the better, as to interfere as little as possible with the golfers on the course on a given day. “I like to hire guys to come in and do their job, and get out of there,” Schuldt said. Schuldt doesn’t get on the mowers too often at Deer Valley, with the staff he has to work with. He concentrates his efforts on keeping the equipment in working order, and making sure chemicals and fertilizers are mixed and applied properly. That’s a crucial part of being a superintendent. He was in charge at the former Rock River Country Club (now Rock River Golf and Pool) in Rock Falls for 20 years, and recalled using some chemicals that he thought would kill weeds on the tees. The chemicals were left over from a previous grounds crew, and ended up killing everything on the tees, including the grass. “I learned my lesson there,” Schuldt said. Now he won’t use any chemical or fertilizer unless he’s opened it and mixed it himself. The main difference between the courses he works for now, beside the number of holes (Deer Valley is 18 and Green River is nine), are the greens. Deer Valley’s are sand-based and require more water, chemicals and fertilizer to remain in top condition, while Green River’s have more soil mixed in, and require less maintenance. Schuldt is the main tender of

the greens at the Walnut course. Between the two courses, he often works from sunrise to almost sunset, and any traditional 8-hour workday, like many people have, is rare. “The only problem I have is there’s a lot of things I’d like to do,” Schuldt said, “but I just don’t have the time to do it.” Pride in his work, and yes, a bit of an ego, play a part in Schuldt making sure his courses are groomed the best they can be each day. “There’s nothing greater than getting a compliment about the golf course,” Schuldt said. “That’s what guys work for. When you get done and somebody says, ‘That course is really coming along’ or ‘That course is really nice now,’ it puffs you right up.” The question now is, when is enough enough? Schuldt, who turned 77 on April 28, plans to be the superintendent at Deer Valley the rest of this season and likely in 2016, but he’s already grooming a replacement in current top assistant Alan Moore. “When you’re 77, it’s a day-by-day thing. I only buy three bananas at a time now,” Schuldt said with a laugh. Schuldt isn’t sure what his involvement will be at Green River down the road. His wife Lou Ann has mentioned she would like her husband to slow down a bit, but Don keeps chugging along. “I can tell I’m not as spry as I used to be,” Schuldt said, “but I like the challenge. People say, How can you work 7 days a week? I don’t mind going out there. I enjoy it.”

We would like to invite everyone to come out and enjoy the Lake Carroll Golf Course and Restaurant. Lake Carroll is a public golf course, contrary to some beliefs, and restaurant located just north of Lanark in scenic Carroll County. The newly renovated 18-hole golf course is spread out over 220 acres, allowing for calming seclusion throughout your round. With newly renovated tees and bunkers, along with some other major changes, Lake Carroll golf course will prove to have some of the best playing conditions in Northwest Illinois. The relatively short yardage is quite deceptive, with the numerous doglegs, treelined fairways, strategically placed bunkers and well-manicured, undulating greens making the Lake Carroll golf course play longer than the listed 6,520 yards. The four different tees allow all golfers an enjoyable
