C.J. Wade wears many hats Local golf pro answers the call of the Sauk Valley BY BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5551 @BrianWeidman DIXON – For C.J. Wade, there is always something to do in the Timber Creek golf course pro shop. Even on a recent rainy afternoon, there were still golfers to be tended to. One wanted to go out and play, even on a soaked course. Definitely no carts, Wade said, but if you want to go out and walk a few holes, have at it. WADE CONTINUED ON 9

‘It was just time to part ways’ WADE

CONTINUED FROM 4 Another needed a bag of range balls, to get in some practice between intermittent showers. Some pre-tournament Masters coverage was on TV, but for Wade, it was merely background noise. There was paperwork to do. The pro shop needed to be ready to go in the morning, weather permitting. For Wade, it was just another day in a business that has been a bit of a whirlwind for the past 20 months. The 32-year-old was the pro at Emerald Hill golf course in Sterling from March 2006 until August 2014, when he was abruptly let go. It was a puzzling and frustrating period for him and his wife, Kara. He was out of a job, and they had just had their first child, Quentin. He’d had no plans to leave Emerald Hill, but now had no choice but to do just that. “It was just time to part ways,” Wade said. “I don’t hold anything against them, and I hope they don’t

hold anything against me. It was just time to move on. Emerald Hill is special to me, for more reasons than just working there. It was the course I grew up on, so that makes it a little extra special, but Timber Creek is my new home now.” Wade finished up the fifth, and final, season as the Sterling High School golf coach that fall, then it was time for a new challenge in the golf industry. A Dunham’s Sporting Goods store was opening in the Northland Mall, and Wade was in charge of setting up the golf display, including a golf simulator to analyze customers’ swings and fit them with the right equipment. He was at Dunham’s for about 6 weeks. “I learned a lot about retail and what goes into it,” Wade said. “There’s a lot more than people realize – just where a price tag goes, and how displays are supposed to work, things like that. It was good experience, because I had never done that before, but the general manager knew I was looking for another job, and that’s when Manteno came calling.” That would be in December 2014, when he became general manager at Manteno Golf Club. Making Timber Creek home WADE

CONTINUED FROM 9 Like at Emerald Hill, he managed the pro shop, but he also wore many more hats than that: He cut grass with the grounds crew, cooked food in the kitchen and mixed drinks behind the bar, to name a few of the duties he undertook. He was mindful of maintaining a healthy bottom line, making sure the budget was strictly adhered to. Wade enjoyed his new job, but still, there was a pull to the Sauk Valley. His home in Sterling hadn’t sold, and the bulk of family and friends remained in Sterling, where he was from, and Milledgeville, Kara’s hometown. Grandparents, among others, saw Quentin only on weekends, if then. Ed and Debbie Wade of Sterling, his parents, took care of Bogey, a husky who was not allowed in the apartment the Wades were renting in Manteno.

“We just didn’t feel like it was a good fit, not only for our small family, but our extended family,” Wade said. That all changed last summer, when there was an opening for the head pro job at Timber Creek. He started in August.

It was tough to leave Manteno Golf Club, where he enjoyed a membership that had a thirst for golf, and where he and Kara had made many new friends, he said. It also meant Kara had to leave a job in which she was just getting established. A chance to return to the Sauk Valley, however, was too tempting to pass up. Now Wade spends most of his days at the golf course, organizing the pro shop, schmoozing with the members and filling out the seemingly endless piles of paperwork. He hopes to give more lessons as the weather improves. He also must prepare for

a men’s Lincoln Highway tournament, to be hosted by Timber Creek in July. The one thing he doesn’t have much time for, surprisingly, is to play golf. He’s a oncea-week player, at most. “I played with a couple members, and they showed me the ropes out here,” Wade said. “I wish I could play more, but just don’t have the time between running the pro shop, giving a lesson here or there, and then other things come up. Plus, I’ve got a family at home. “Work and family come before pleasure, I guess.”

Discover Lake Carroll We would like to invite everyone to come out and enjoy the Lake Carroll Golf Course and Restaurant. Lake Carroll is a public golf course, contrary to some beliefs, and restaurant located just north of Lanark in scenic Carroll County. The newly renovated 18-hole golf course is spread out over 220 acres, allowing for calming seclusion throughout your round. With newly renovated tees and bunkers, along with some other major changes, Lake Carroll golf course will prove to have some of the best playing conditions in Northwest Illinois. The relatively short yardage is quite deceptive, with the numerous doglegs, treelined fairways, strategically placed bunkers and well-manicured, undulating greens making the Lake Carroll golf course play longer than the listed 6,520 yards. The four different tees allow all golfers an enjoyable experience on the course. Regardless of skill, Lake Carroll offers 18 holes of perfectly mixed scenery, serenity, challenge and personal attention to make every play day an experience to be remembered. At Lake Carroll, our mission is to offer great customer service, every time. That is why our pro shop staff has a PGA golf professional on site throughout the day. From offering expert advice on pro shop merchandise to lessons, we can help you with all of your golfing needs. Lake Carroll also has the largest, well-stocked pro shop in Northwest Illinois. We have it stocked with major brands of golf goods and boast the largest selection of in-stock shoes, from FootJoy, Nike, Puma and Adidas. We also offer Demo clubs – in brands such as TaylorMade, PING, Mizuno, Cobra, Nike, Cleveland and Callaway – for golfers to test on the range or the course. The PGA golf professional staff also are experts in club fitting, allowing golfers to get the equipment to match their unique swing. No two swings are the same; why should clubs be any different? Improving one’s enjoyment of golf is the Lake Carroll professional staff’s duty, which

Sauk Valley Media

is why it offers instruction for adults, groups, juniors and clinics tailored to make people into whatever kind of golfer they aspire to be. We offer a no-pressure setting, and the only expectation is to enhance the student’s enjoyment of golf. Lake Carroll has the pleasure of hosting many corporate and group outings throughout the year. It is the only course in the area able to offer a full-service restaurant and bar, and be able to accommodate any size outing, large or small. Many outings have taken advantage of the large outdoor patio and grills for their dining and entertainment needs. The Lake Carroll restaurant will offer the best full-service outing in the area, by assisting with food, drink, prizes, awards, scoreboards, formats and pre-set cart assignments for your convenience. One of the luxuries available at Lake Carroll is the full-service restaurant and bar, open to the public and featuring many different lunch and dinner menu items as well as a daily soup-and-salad bar. There are daily and nightly specials as well. Stop in before a round or call the clubhouse to make reservations. Lake Carroll offers all the services you will need for a great experience, and the staff looks forward to serving everyone. – This article was submitted by Head Golf Professional Jason Hill, Lake Carroll Golf Course.

Did you know? Professional sports teams, public and private golf courses and public parks rely on professional groundskeepers to maintain playing surfaces and park grounds. Golf course employees who maintain the grounds are often referred to as “greenskeepers,” but such employees do more than maintain putting greens. The responsibilities of greenskeepers and their staffs include mowing the greens, tee boxes, fairways and rough, and each particular area requires the use of a different mower. Golf course maintenance staff typically begin their workdays before the 38

sun rises, ending their days sometime in early afternoon so golfers can play without distraction. Groundskeepers for professional sports teams focus the bulk of their efforts on maintaining the fields, which require significant watering and fertilization to withstand the heavy wear and tear they receive during the course of a season. Professional sports team groundskeepers typically work very long hours during the season, often arriving many hours before game time and staying even after the game has ended. HOW TO: Help kids get into golf Golf is a game of skill that can take years, if not decades, to master. Many golfers find their time on the golf course both rewarding and relaxing, even on those days when the fairways seem impossible to find. Though many players never swing a golf club until they reach adulthood, it’s never too early to hit the links. Some of the world’s most accomplished golfers, including fourtime Masters champion Tiger Woods, began playing as toddlers, and many think getting an early start can lead to a more successful game down the road. Getting kids into golf is a great way for parents to bond with their children while enjoying the great outdoors. Golf can also be used to teach kids humility, sportsmanship and the importance of hard work. Thanks to the often frustrating nature of golf, parents may find it somewhat challenging to instill a love of the game in their youngsters. There are ways, though to introduce kids to this wonderful game that kids might just play for the rest of their lives. • Focus on having fun. Few, if any, golfers could say with certainty that golf frustrated them. The challenge of golf may be its most appealing characteristic to older players, but young kids can be overwhelmed by the challenges golf presents. By focusing on having fun instead of perfecting techniques, parents can get kids to look forward to their time on the links. The more fun kids have, the more likely they will be to embrace the game and its many challenges. Don’t put pressure on youngsters as they develop their games, but encourage them through their struggles and reassure them that you faced the same obstacles when you started playing. • Hire an instructor with experience teaching children. Instructors with experience teaching children will understand the basics of the game and how learning those basics provides a great foundation for future enjoyment and success on the course. Instructors who have taught kids in the past also know that teaching youngsters the finer points of golf requires patience and encouragement. Ask a fellow parent or an employee at the club where you play to recommend an instructor for your child. Take advantage of any kids’ courses your club offers. • Buy the correct equipment. Even the best golfers are bound to struggle when using the wrong equipment. While it might be unwise to invest in especially expensive equipment for youngsters likely to grow out of it in a few months’ time, deals can be found on used kids’ equipment. Used kids’ equipment is typically subjected to less wear and tear than used equipment for adults, as kids tend to play less often and fewer holes than adults when they do play. Make sure to find correctly sized equipment that kids feel comfortable using. • Play some holes. Instructors may teach kids the differences between the types of clubs and how to swing and putt. Golf is most fun, though when players are out on the links going from hole to hole. Instruction is important, but don’t forget to play a few holes with your child each week as well.
