Museum has Kable ties to the past – and more Volunteers keep Mount Morris history alive

L

ocal lore has it that Mount Morris was one of only two towns (the other was Hershey, Pennsylvania) that thrived during the Great Depression, thanks to the successful Kable Printing Co.

“People still wanted their chocolate, and they still wanted their reading material,” said Jerry Stauffer, curator of Mount Morris Historical Museum.

The museum, in the lower level of village hall, houses a significant collection of artifacts and memorabilia from the Kable companies — Kable Printing, which dates back to the late 1800s, and Kable News, a magazine distribution company that dates back to 1932.

“It was one of the biggest, if not the biggest, printing companies in the country at that time,” said Stauffer, who worked for the company for almost 30 years.

Kable Printing Co. shut down about 5 years ago, after more than 100 years in operation. The Kable News Co., however, still distributes hundreds of magazines and other periodicals.

The museum also has several items in its collection from Watt Publishing Co., started in the late 1910s by a man who worked for the Kable brothers.

Watt Publishing now is WATT Global Media, based out of Rockford.

The Mount Morris Historical Museum is dedicated to maintaining local history.

“We try not to be a general museum of ‘old stuff,’” Stauffer said. “We try to limit it to Mount Morris-related items, whether it be advertisements or items from local businesses, memorabilia from the schools.…”

In fact, the museum started more than 20 years ago, around the time the Mount Morris schools merged with the Oregon schools, with a collection of trophies and plaques from school sports teams and other clubs.

The awards otherwise would have been thrown away, Stauffer said.

Nearly all of the items in the collection have been donated. A few items have been purchased, such as a 1915 wide-angle photograph of the Kable Band in front of what is known as the Sandstone Building.

The museum does not keep historical records, except for the attendance books from the high school, therefore it does not offer genealogy services.

It does have some unique documents, however, including the original land abstract for the old Mount Morris Seminary, later known as Mount Morris College, which closed in 1932; and a collection of blueprints for homes and commercial buildings built by the Buser Lumber Company, which closed in the 1970s.

Boomers Spring 2016 The museum is housed in the village hall, which is known as the new addition to the old grade school; the museum pays no rent, no utilities, and has a small budget for acquiring new items and maintaining its collection, Stauffer said.

About 10 years ago, the museum was falling into disrepair. A new group of volunteers took over and did a complete interior renovation: outside walls were insulated and drywalled, three rooms were opened up and connected, the old ceiling and lighting were replaced, and new carpeting was installed.

The museum is open only on election days and by appointment. It would be open more often, but volunteers are needed to entertain visitors, Stauffer said.

Velma Kellen, 100, fueled her family of firefighters

f you live in or around town, you’ve run into a Kellen. And for that, you can thank Velma.

That’s because, most likely, a Kellen has helped you or someone you love, whether fighting a fire or responding to a medical emergency.

Or maybe Velma crocheted a blanket your baby used to stay warm in the winter. Or provided entertainment at your grandparents’ nursing home.

Velma, 100 years young, was a member of many groups over the years. And she was an honorary member of the Sublette Fire Department, where, between them, her husband, sons, grandkids and step-great-grandkids have served a combined total of nearly 300 years.

Boomers Spring 2016 “Every bit of it came from her,” her son, Bob “Buck” Keller, said while visiting Velma at Heritage Health: Therapy & Senior Care in Mendota. “She taught us what to do, and how to do it.”

When the alarm went off in the home of Velma and her husband, Gilbert – who served 25 years in the department – the boys would go upstairs to get ready, and she’d get the door.

“I’d get the door open, so they could go through it,” she said.

“By the time we’d get down, she’d have our coats to put on when we got outside,” Buck said.

If the guys answered a daytime call, they returned to a warm, delicious meal. If it was a nighttime call, coffee and doughnuts were waiting at the station.

“We always had someone coming in all the time, so I learned to make everything,” she said.

“They worked up an appetite.

And I was very proud of them.”

Buck served 38 years with the department, 28 of them as captain.

“I really enjoyed it. I did,” he

9 said. “The adrenaline rush as soon as the siren went. Everybody enjoyed it. The grandkids, they still look forward to it.”

“That makes me very proud,” Velma said.

‘I guess that’s why I made it to 100’ KELLEN

“Oh, yes. You never knew what kind of call they were going on,” she said. “It got easier and easier to relax, over time.”

These days, there are about 430 people living in Sublette. Nearly 150 of them attended Velma’s 100th birthday party in October at Our Lady of Perpetual Health.

“She’s one of those people who everyone in the community knew – from singing in the choir to square dancing,” said grandson Kyle Kellen, in his 15th year with the fire department and also a deputy with the Lee County Sheriff’s Department.

When she was younger, Velma loved to play baseball and basketball, and she loved to entertain – dance, especially – with the many groups she volunteered with. She square-danced until she was 87.

“I guess that’s why I made it to 100,” she said.

Velma was a member of numerous groups – from the Sublette Fire Belles to Modern Matrons.

In addition to feeding her army with her signature soups, she also cooked for funerals and other events at Our Lady.

Despite her volunteering spirit, she wasn’t about to let her children volunteer for her. Kyle said the only time he remembers her getting upset is if a grandson helped her out and tried to get away without getting paid.

“That’s about the only time I’d ever see her upset, if you’re trying to run out the front door before she’d pay you,” he said. “And if one of me or the cousins got away, she was just going to save it for your birthday or Christmas, and sneak it in there.”

Hellion to healer

When Velma’s sons got into trouble, it wasn’t a bad idea to start the line of questioning with John.

Hunting, fishing and trapping are passions of the Kellens.

But as a kid, John had a penchant for pushing the limits, often picking birds off branches while waiting for the bus to arrive.

But in 1973, when Buck, then the fire chief, started the department’s EMS service, the first EMTs were Donnie Mini and none other than John. In fact, he wanted to be a nurse, if only he could afford the schooling.

Then he won the lottery – $5,555, to be exact. His family members had to wonder what sort of guns or fishing gear he would spend it on.

His mother dared to ask, and he told her he was going to nursing school.

“I had more people tell me how good he was, and everything like that,” Velma said. “To think he was the most mischievous out of the bunch. He would do everything under the sun. And yet he turned out so good.”

His service was limited to 21 years. Cancer took his life in 1989, 7 years after Gilbert died after 2 years of dialysis. Gil lost a kidney in Japan in World War II, and passed around Christ-

mas time in 1982. No doubt, the holidays are hard for Velma.

But year-round, and for the foreseeable future, her legacy survives.

“Whenever they talk about the Kellen side of firefighting, when you go to the neighboring departments, they see your last name and automatically give you more respect than others,” Kyle said. “They know how your uncle has fought fires, and how your dad fought fires.

“When they see Kellen on the back of the jacket, they say, ‘God, it’s great to see you came up.’”

Kyle is one of six family members still serving the department.

“I was counting down the days until my 18th birthday, so I could join the department,” he said. “And I joined the minute I could.”

That was April 16, 2000. Now, another is potentially counting down the days. Janelle and Delbert’s second son, Mike, is a freshman in high school, and eager to get involved, Buck said, then sharing the best advice he’ll offer the firefighter in waiting.

“Take your time getting into it,” Buck said. “Don’t just jump into it because everyone else is doing it. Make sure you want to do it.”

A full life

When it hasn’t been testing her family’s mettle, life has been a celebration for Velma. Attending events through the department, or through Gib’s job as a mail carrier. Trips up north with the family.

And so, so many groups. So many people to love.

“We had so much all our lives,” she said.

“We always were busy,” Buck said.

atthew Andres is a University of Illinois law professor and director of the Elder Financial Justice Clinic, which provides free legal representation to seniors who have been the victims of financial crimes.

Andres spoke with U of I News Bureau Business and Law Editor Phil Ciciora about the prevalence of elder financial exploitation in the U.S. With the baby-boom generation retiring in droves, how common is elder financial exploitation? Is it likely to increase?

Financial exploitation is the most common form of elder abuse in the United States. It is estimated that older adults lose $2.9 billion of personal wealth each year to financial exploitation by unscrupulous businesses and individuals.

Incidents of financial exploitation are sure to increase, given U.S. census data and projections.

In 2010, there were 40.2 million people 65 and older. By 2030, it is projected that there will be 72 million people older than 65, and by 2050 that number is expected to reach 88.5 million.

‘$30 trillion in investable assets’ FINANCES

Baby boomers will be entering their golden years with nearly $30 trillion in investable assets, twice the number of investable assets held by the previous generation, making them highly desirable targets for all kinds of financial exploitation.

In Illinois, you helped to spearhead Public Act 99-0272, a law aimed at protecting Illinois seniors and the disabled from financial exploitation. Could you explain the law’s protections?

Public Act 99-0272 gives any victim of financial exploitation in Illinois a civil cause of action against their abuser if that abuser is a family member, caregiver or other person in a position of trust with the victim.

That means the victim can sue their abuser for financial exploitation. Under the law, not only are victims who prevail

in court entitled to recover the money taken from them, the court must also order the abuser to pay three times the amount stolen and the victim’s attorney’s fees.

Hopefully, this law will lead more victims to seek recovery of money fraudulently taken from them and encourage more attorneys to take on cases of financial exploitation.

You are the director of the Elder Financial Justice Clinic at the College of Law. Can you explain what the clinic does?

The Elder Financial Justice Clinic is the first law school clinic in the country focused on combating elder financial exploitation. Second- and third-year law students under my supervision provide direct legal representation to people 60 and older and other vulnerable adults throughout Illinois who have been victims of any type of financial fraud or abuse.

I started the clinic in 2013, and in our first 2 years of operation we have represented 34 clients in 14 Illinois counties.

To date, we have obtained $266,347 in restitution for our financially exploited clients.

What can adult children do to prevent their elderly parents or other vulnerable senior citizens from becoming victims? Are there any warning signs people should look for?

Unfortunately, too many seniors find themselves alone and without adequate support systems. Not surprisingly, these are the seniors who are most vulnerable to financial abuse.

The most important thing adult children can do is to be involved in their parents’ lives. If concerned and conscientious children can monitor their parents’ finances, they can catch many of the warning signs of financial exploitation – sudden changes in spending habits, large unexplained withdrawals from accounts – before it is too late.

And if parents know that their adult children are available to talk about financial issues, and the parents know to talk to their children when someone calls or rings the doorbell and asks for money, adult children can catch a great deal of potential fraud.

In the Elder Financial Justice Clinic, we also give our clients the following advice to help them avoid being victims of financial fraud: • Do not wire money or buy a prepaid card for purposes of transferring money. Con artists, often pretending to be a friend or family member, request that money be sent to them via wire transfer or prepaid cards, and once money is sent through these means it cannot be recovered.

• Do not give money to or contract with anyone who has called you unsolicited or has shown up at your house without an appointment.

• Do not pay up front for home repair services. Reputable contractors do not expect to be paid in full until the work is completed to the customer’s satisfaction.

• Before signing a contract for services, check out potential contractors and service providers on online review services, through consumer advocacy services like the Better Business Bureau, and through government agencies like the Illinois Attorney General’s Office and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to make sure they are reputable.

• Find out whether contractors and service providers are properly licensed before hiring them. For example, anyone doing roofing work in Illinois is required by law to have an Illinois roofing license.

• Research thoroughly whether a reverse mortgage or an annuity is right for you before purchasing one.

• Do not sign any ownership interest in your house over to anyone, even a family member, with an expectation that you can continue to live there. There are better ways to transfer property at death, including transfer on death deeds, and once someone else holds title to your house it is much easier for them to evict you and much more difficult for you to evict them.

• Do not sign anything that someone is pressuring you to sign.
