Having a backup plan ready is key PLANNER

With the help of a wedding planner, or event specialist, all the details will be well thought out and any questions answered before the big day arrives. A wedding planner has the process so wellestablished that she thinks of every contingency and always has plan A and plan B in place before the wedding day. “Every family is different, and has different needs. When they leave the conference, they have six pages of details that we’ve worked out. They also have a list of referrals for DJs, etc.” Having just completed rigorous training and trials to be inducted into the
American Institute of Floral Designers in July, SelmiDowns is most excited to offer creative and unique floral services to complement the wedding and reception. She has many ideas for saving money by getting as much use as possible from each component – for instance, some floral arrangements can be used at the church or ceremony, and later moved to decorate the reception area, so guests can enjoy them for the balance of the event. By the way, those behindthe-scene tasks can be done by Selmi-Downs and her staff – such services are available for an hourly fee based on the size of the wedding.

IXON – Couples seeking one-ofa-kind settings for their weddings should consider venues not usually marked for marriage ceremonies. The Historic Dixon Theatre, opened in 1922 on the site of the former Dixon Opera House, which was destroyed by fire in 1920, is one such place. The magnificent theater features a proscenium stage, an orchestra pit and dressing rooms; it seats 700 on the main floor and 500 in the balcony, including the box seats; and it features stunning Italian marble, crown moldings and rich burgundy and gold throughout the building. The crowning feature of the theater is a two-tiered, lighted, domed ceiling, which not only is beautiful, but also offers superb acoustics. The Historic Dixon Theatre has served as the venue for several weddings since volunteer operators Tom and Jodi Elmendorf opened it for their son’s nuptials in June 2011. It already has a few booked for next year and even one for 2016, but several dates still are available. The theater offers a dramatic backdrop for weddings, most of which take place on the stage, Jodi Elmendorf said. Couples are free to configure and transform the stage and the main floor, including the lobby, as they see fit, she said. “Every wedding has been different…” Elmendorf said. “From very small with just a few plants on the stage all the way to more extravagant … with the lobby and stage all decorated. “The way we look at it is it’s really an empty canvas. It’s beautiful by itself, but the sky’s the limit.” The theater also offers an indoor setting free of the formalities of a church or municipal facility, she added. And it’s filled with unique photo opportunities, she said. The rental fee for a ceremony starts at $650 and includes access to the dressing rooms. The theater, which also is available for receptions, also offers several decorative items for rent.

His real passion for photography began at CEDIM, a design school in Monterrey, Mexico, and followed him to the United States after he met his wife, Katie. One such moment is particularly important to Royer: He suggests that the bride not see her dad before she is finished getting ready, which creates “a special moment between father and daughter. Him being the first to see her in her dress, fully ready, is a moment that I love.” Candid, casual wedding photos are all the rage now, and Royer likes to take photos while the wedding party is prepping for the ceremony. His camera catches authentic moments when participants are simply being themselves, and the photos help couples remember the whole process, not just the ceremony. “One of the poses that I am known for is the ‘middle of the highway’ photo. The idea of risk and limited time to take the shot
really creates the atmosphere for a great memory.” But Royer also suggests that the bride and groom do some of the more traditional poses. “The couple should always think about how the photos will look in the future. What is popular now, may not be popular 10 years from now. The wedding is only one day, and it is better to have those more traditional photos than to not have them at all.” The best photos, he said, often come from ideas the wedding party comes up with themselves. “I always give them a chance to come up with something on their own.” In his quest for authenticity, Royer also offers his couples full color, unedited versions of his photos, and tries not to over-edit, preferring to employ as much natural beauty and light as possible.

“This is a special trip, and you want good memories and you do not want to remember complaining because the hotel was not what you expected,” Brechon continued. “Many times, their expectations are not what they are paying for.” According to a 2012 study done by TheKnot.com and Weddingchannel.com, more than 70 percent of destination weddings are within the United States. Las Vegas continues to be a popular spot, but there are many other beautiful locations to consider that do not require crossing the pond, Brechon said. That same 2012 study found that California, Nevada, and Florida (home to the only allinclusive resort, Club Med’s Sandpiper Bay) are the top states for couples planning a destination wedding, as was Hawaii for those planning a trip outside the continental United States. If traveling outside the United States, it is important to research marriage requirements and choose vendors carefully. Couples also should let potential bridal party members know well in advance, so they can decline if they are unable to attend.
Couples should pick destination wedding and honeymoon travel locations based on both of their wants and needs, “as the most important aspect of this special trip is for both of you to be happy,” Brechon said. For those looking for relaxation and romance, Maui and Oahu, Hawaii, as well as overwater bungalows in Bora Bora, are beautiful options, while Costa Rica is great for couples looking for more adventure, she said. Other popular locales include the Caribbean, especially Santa Lucia, Sandals Jamaica, and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. For couples who may have traveled less, a location such as Cancun, Mexico is a great option, because there won’t be as much culture shock as may be experienced in other countries. As destination weddings continue to rise in popularity, many resorts have a wedding planner readily available to help couples who are planning from afar. It is also important to research resorts. Brechon suggests Sandals, which have beautiful properties and are all-inclusive. Other countries, such as Mexico, continue to rise in popularity and provide many options for all-inclusive resorts.

Rhodes suggests they bring pictures, but not of just the hairstyle they are looking for. “Bringing in a picture of the complete look the bride is going for really helps,” the stylist said. “We create complete looks, matching hair and makeup. By picking makeup that complements the bride’s hairstyle, the look flows. “I love when brides also bring in photos of their dresses. This allows for a look that is complete and really makes a big difference.” With the right look, the bridesmaids can complement the bride in ways that many brides may not realize. “By bringing in a photo of the bridesmaids’ dresses, we can create a look that flows through the whole bridal party,” Rhodes said.

Owner has knack for repurposing PERSONAL

Sue Lanphere did her first wedding in 1992, going from seamstress to wedding planner with ease. Now some brides come to her for custom-made veils or hairpieces, while others ask for dresses, alterations, flowers, veils and/or reception planning. One day, when cutting down an old wedding dress to make it new, she saved the fabric and lace scraps to make flowers for the bridal bouquet. “I make things as personal as I can get,” Lanphere said. “Using family heirlooms and personal history makes it more meaningful.”
Sue Lanphere of Aunt Sue’s Bridal in Prophetstown creates pieces for your special event. She’s made personalized, hand-painted toasting glasses, and also offers rentals that include stemware, a photo booth, table and chair sashes and table runners.
For one wedding, she took brooches that belonged to generations of family members and incorporated them into the bouquet. Another time, she used the lace from the bride’s mother’s wedding dress to make table decorations for the reception. She also has added a men’s line, and will make vests and ties to coordinate with bride’s and bridesmaids’ dresses. Last fall, Lanphere made or altered a 24 homecoming dresses and designed the silk flower bouquets, corsages and boutonnieres to go with them. Some of the girls designed their own dresses, picking the top from one picture, and the skirt from another. Lanphere works in her home, sewing upstairs and doing flowers and painting in the basement, a handy arrangement for those nights that she is sewing until the wee hours of the morning. “This works out well for me, and I don’t have the added expenses of rent, lights and heat for a building downtown.”

The Barn at Allen Acres, 2206 Prophet Road off U.S. Route 30, offers a rustic, restored dairy barn and a country-themed farmhouse available for the rehearsal dinner, the wedding – and the wedding night. Owner Karen Rogers, a former American Airlines flight attendant, now lives in Crystal Lake, but the 3.5-acre farm was her family homestead for the last 80 years; it was farmed by her father and his father before him. “I do” proved to be the key to that question: A young Rock Falls couple approached her and asked if they could marry there, and The Barn at Allen Acres took on its romantic new role. Dustin Cardwell and Molly Benters, both 27, tied the knot there on Sept. 21. “Molly,” Dustin said, “was dead set in her mind that she was going to get married in a barn. I blame it on Pinterest.” “It was perfect,” said the new Mrs. Cardwell. “It was everything that
I’d hoped for. A lot of people doubted me, and said you can’t make this ugly barn beautiful, but I did.” Rogers was a big help, they said. “She’s the nicest lady,” Dustin said. “She helped us in every way possible, and she was just great to work with.” Rogers’ two-story barn has a 26-foot ceiling, exposed beams, original wood siding and original barn doors, and seats 150 comfortably upstairs, where the ceremony is held. The house has dressing rooms for the bride, the bridesmaids, the groom and his groomsmen, and bedrooms, including a child’s room, all decorated with country antiques.
The rental fee, which starts at $2,000, gets you the farm Thursday through Sunday, so you have plenty of time to decorate, like Molly did, and hang out with the wedding party. It’s open year-round, but take heed: The barn is not heated or air-conditioned.
It’s all a work in progress, Rogers said. At some point, she plans to have chairs and other wedding accessories available. But for now, she’s offering the venue only (and hay bales for seats, if you like). The couple are responsible for their own food, drinks, decorations and entertain-
ment, but Rogers will help find vendors and hotel accommodations for out-of-town guests. The barn does have lights and electricity, and Rogers also has an antique carriage perfect for wedding photos. Couples also can get married outside, if they prefer. There’s plenty of room for dancing under the stars. ...

The restaurant features home-style cooking, from individual meals to parties with several hundred guests. “Everything is homemade,” Henderson said. The recipes are a “collection through life,” much of which she learned growing up in the kitchen with her parents and grandparents. “We’ve had great cooks – not chefs – but real cooks, along the way, too,” she said. Erika and Zachary Oltmanns were married there on Jan. 4, 2014. “The food was outstanding,” Zachary said. “Erika and I got many compliments on how well the food tasted that night.” Their plans changed slightly because of a snow-
storm, but the staff went along unaffected, providing them and their guests with an amazing time, the Oltmanns said. “The White Pines staff quickly was able to rearrange the rooms to accommodate our over 250 guests,” Zachary said. “We had our wedding and reception at LaBranche. We couldn’t have thought of a better place to have it, to be honest. With the snowflakes falling outside, and the cozy fireplaces on inside, it was just perfect.” The Wedding Canyon is a picturesque, 6-acre rejuvenated gravel quarry. Saturdays book up quickly for the mid-May through early October season, but never is more than one scheduled at a time. The site features mature white pines, limestone formations, waterfalls, ponds, fountains, a large
variety of statuary, arches, trellises, and a seemingly endless amount of backdrops for photography. Although outdoors, it provides all the indoor conveniences, including air conditioned dressing rooms. It offers several add-on amenities: a horse-drawn carriage, a nondenominational pastor, 29 log cabins, cakes, and invitations. Staff has an extensive network of vendors and other providers who do what they can’t. “It is a mini destination,” Henderson added. “We have many brides from Chicago, some from around the world, who are formerly from here and come back home. We can plan things long distance, have a whole bridal and banquet staff. It is also a nice alternative for those who don’t belong to a church or simply love the outdoors.”

Andreoni advises that brides should not worry if they do not find ‘the One’ on the first visit to a bridal boutique. “Some brides fall in love with the very first dress they try, others may need to explore their options. Our goal at Marien and Mae is to find the perfect gown. “Almost any girl can wear any gown; the key is a great seamstress who understands the bride’s needs,” Andreoni said. “Many girls feel the need to shy away from strapless gowns because of the fear of constant readjusting. A great seamstress will create the proper fit so any issues are resolved before the big day, allowing the bride to be her most comfortable.” For brides who want to involve the groom but do not want them to see the dress before the big day,
there are other options. Asking for their opinion about how they would like the bride’s hair on the wedding day is a way for grooms to influence the big day without revealing the bride’s special wedding day look. But most important, Andreoni reflects, “the bride’s gown should reflect her taste and style. Her unique personality should be reflected through not only the gown, but in her look as a whole. hile formal wear for women has varied greatly over the generations, the tuxedo has been the formal staple for men for more than 125 years. An adaptation from the longtime standard, jacket with long tails, the tuxedo made its splash in the United States, at an exclusive sporting club, in Tuxedo Park, N.Y., in the 1880s. Since that time, there have been only minor variations each year, reflecting the current tastes and styles. Amanda Harrison, manager at Seno Formal Wear in Sterling, says recently they’re featuring a new cut. “We have a new modern fit, which is real popular. It’s more of a slimming cut that kind of hugs the waist,” she said. “This is a new line from Allure, by Jean Yves, that looks good on every body type.” Seno also offers fresh new colors.

About 70 percent of my inventory is new gowns.” It costs between $75 and $300 to rent a designer gown, although “some fall in love with the gown they wanted to rent and purchase it instead. There are special event dresses available also, including, prom, homecoming, informal, casual and shorter varieties. “I love hosting parties and events,” Hicks said. “With eight children of my own, five of them married, I know weddings can be outrageously expensive and extremely stressful. “I wanted to help alleviate some of the financial burden off of people and teach them some of the things I’ve learned.” She asks that brides call in advance to try on gowns, so she can spend more time with them. Hicks also offers a wide variety of themed, elegant and traditional wedding décor. Her store can set up and tear down “so your family doesn’t have to do that on your wedding day, and can be there with you while you’re getting ready,” she said. “I have a rental for everything
from the candles, centerpieces, vases and more,” Hicks said. “And if I don’t have it in stock, I know where to get it for you.” Bride-to-be Heather Neckolaishen heard of Something Borrowed Something Blue through a friend. She tried on several dresses, veils, jewelry and was doted on by Hicks, who helped with fasteners, buttons and anything Neckolaishen needed assistance with. Standing on a platform, before a full-length mirror, Neckolaishen wore an off-the-shoulder, full-length gown. She turned side-to-side, looking herself up and down checking the fit, smiled, and said, “I love this one. It has a completely different look than the first one I wanted. Now I’m not sure which to get.” Hicks took her cellphone and snapped a couple of photographs for Neckolaishen to share with her family and friends to help her make a decision and told her, “Just take your time. Come back when you’re ready.”

18 tips for an affordable wedding 1. Avoid guest list bloat. For some people, it can feel very tempting to invite hundreds of people to the ceremony. With each addition to your guest list, though, you’re adding a person that’s of lesser importance to you, compared to the people you’ve already invited. Instead of just adding more and more people, consider inviting fewer people and making the event more intimate. Try cutting your list in half, and see if you’re happy with it.
2. Ask for wedding help instead of wedding gifts. Do you have friends or family blessed with musical talent? Ask them to provide the musical accompaniment for your ceremony. How about a pal who’s a good amateur photographer, or videographer? Let them give the gift of their talent, offer to pay for their supplies, or work out a nominal fee or a trade of talents (they shoot your wedding, you sing at theirs ...) services.

4. Do catering yourself, or hire a family-owned restaurant. If you have a flair for cooking, you can handle your own food preparation with the help of family and friends. This drastically reduces the food costs for the ceremony. If this isn’t your forte, look around your community for a familyowned restaurant and ask the owners directly to cater your wedding. Familyowned restaurants are always the first place to check – they will almost always go the extra mile to make your wedding special and will also charge a reasonable rate.
5. Go minimal with flowers. Instead of having huge piles of flowers everywhere (something that will really last for only an afternoon), instead simply go with a single rose for each bridesmaid and a very small bouquet for the bride. If you know someone with a rose bush, you can actually easily make your own bouquets the day before the ceremony by cutting the roses yourself and trimming away the thorns.

8. Use a good home stereo system for the reception music. Rather than hiring a DJ, just use your own home stereo (or the stereo of a close friend). Put speakers around the dance floor area – there’s no need to spread them around the reception room. Then just create a few mix CDs from your own collection, or set up a playlist in a program on your computer – there’s all the music you need.
9. Have “vendor cards” in exchange for reduced rates. If you’re hiring people to provide services for your reception (musicians, a DJ, florists, caterers, photographers, etc.), offer to advertise for them in exchange for reduced rates. At the reception, put a small card in each person’s place that lists the businesses responsible for each service at the wedding, along with their contact information. Since this tends to be very effective advertising, many businesses will happily provide services at reduced rates in exchange for this opportunity.
10. Contact the local university for musical accompaniment needs. If you’d like live musical accompaniment for the ceremony (and perhaps for the reception), one place to look for lowcost musicians is at the local university’s music department. Ask whether any students are studying a particular instrument or vocal work and see whether they’re available to provide music for your wedding.
