Ever yone seems to have love in their hearts and it is no different here at Lee County Council on Aging.

LCCOA is buzzing. We have a wonderful month ahead of us. With books on love and friendship in our librar y; don’t miss out on our annual Book and Bake Sale on Feb 9. A bag of books is only $1.

We will provide the bag. If you would like to volunteer to bake, give us a call at 815288-9236; we would love to have your homemade goodies.

For those brides that have all

their wonderful accessories left from their beautiful weddings come sell your center pieces, sashes, table cloths candles etc. we are hosting another Accessory Sale in our Post House Ballroom. This is a great opportunity for our brides to be to purchase some amazing accessories at a discounted price.

Feb. 8 is LCCOA’s first Bingo Field Trip. We are traveling to the Meadows of Franklin Grove for a fun morning with their residents and of course a game of Bingo or two.

Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day -LCCOA is hosting a Business after Business (BAB) event.

s I write this, we are 15 days into the new year.

I can’t believe another year has come and gone. With the new year has come a bad case of wanderlust and I just can’t seem to shake it. If you have wanderlust like me (the desire to travel) you’ll want to check out the fantastic trips

Betty has planned for this year. She has done a fabulous job planning something for everyone! In June she’s headed to Mount Rushmore, in August you can find her in Colorado Springs, and in October she’ll be in Maine (I bet it’s gorgeous in the fall). If you follow us on Facebook, let

LCCOA, Papa Murphy’s and County Market are providing an opportunity to meet new people and learn about the businesses in our area.

LCCOA has had a request for a new game to be played on Monday afternoons at 1 pm.

The game is Rummikub. If you are interested contact Flo at 815-288-9236. If you have a set and would be interested in donating it; that would be great. The more sets the better.

LCCOA is looking for a small pool table to replace our regulation table. If anyone would like to donate a pool table, please contact Susan at 815288-9236.

An issue of a Golden Echo couldn’t go by without sharing our thanks to Laura Mangrum for a very interesting presentation on SRES (how to keep seniors in their homes).

EMPORIUM THRIFT CENTER

Greetings from everyone at The Emporium Thrift Center. February is here already, which means we will be starting our 13th year of operating The Emporium. Due to all the support from this county, we have contributed to the Whiteside County Senior Center for 12 years.

Thanks to all the volunteers who man the store each day and to all the folks who bring us their donations. It take this teamwork to make us a SUCCESS. Lets see if I can point out some of our bargains

for you. We have adult clothing of all types and sizes. There is still a lot of winter left and we have the things to keep you warm. We also have lots of accessories, hats, scarves, gloves, boots, shoes, purses and backpacks.

Your house could probably use some new accessories too. We have a wonderful selection of curtains, drapes , framed pictures, lamps and kitchen items. We received a wonderful donation of vintage linens. If you have an appreciation for old stop in and see us. Our shelves are filled with

beautiful old glassware. Sometime it is a treat to give the beautiful glassware as a special gift.

We appreciate all your donations. Just come in and tell us you are at the curb and we will help you bring it into the store. Quarter Madness coming to Post House

DIXON – A Quarter Madness auction to raise funds for Lee County Council on Aging and Goodfellows will be Feb. 24 at Post House Ballroom, 100 W. Second St. Doors open at 12:30 p.m., with the auction at 1:30 p.m. Participants bid using paddles to win a new product from local businesses and home business vendors. Items are auctioned off for 1 to 4 quarters.

Specific Relocation of Information Office hours for LCCOA and WCSC Outreach Departments will now be located in the center Information boxes.Remember it is always best to call ahead and schedule an appointment no matter which center you wish to attend.

WCSC will now share their monthly SHIP site information in the Weekly Activities section, as LCCOA does. Be sure to check this section when looking to see when the centers will visit the local sites within their county. Both centers only attend these sites upon appointments scheduled ahead of time.

Information on upcoming Medicare Choice Classes at WCSC will be located in the Upcoming Special Events section located in the back of the Golden Echo.

While the Medicare Q & A informational article (“Dear Marcy”) will no longer appear in the Golden Echo, any Medicare questions can still be answered by a Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) certified counselor from LCCOA

and WCSC, by phone or in person by appointment. WCSC offers a monthly Medicare Choices class (as mentioned above), and LCCOA offers Medicare presentations periodically throughout the year.

The ITAC (amplified phone program) article will not run every month. For persons interested in this program, both LCCOA and WCSC are still available to schedule an appointment for free amplified phones or cell phone amplifier testing (CapTel or TTY too) at any time during the year.

Both LCCOA and WCSC will continue to accept cell phones, iPads and iPods for recycling, however the reminder notice will appear in the Golden Echo only periodically throughout the year.

Despite the changes, the bottom line is that LCCOA and WCSC want to offer you the best, most pertinent information. This month the Outreach Departments from LCCOA and WCSC want to share about the changes made within their articles.The amount of space allotted for the Outreach articles in the Golden Echo has decreased. It is for this purpose that the LCCOA and WCSC Outreach Departments have decided to share a column in the Outreach area of the Golden Echo. This change has given both LCCOA and WCSC all the more reason to work together each month and collaborate information, announcements, and other happenings that they wish to share with their readers.

Both LCCOA and WCSC Outreach Departments are available to offer an array of services and resources to persons aged 60 and older, to those with disabilities, caregivers, and grandparents raising grandchildren. The centers have SHIP (Senior Health Insurance Program) and NIAAA (Northwestern Illinois Area Agency on Aging) trained caseworkers on staff, making it so that clients can stay educated and informed on programs that benefit them.

WCSC had two dogs from ”Love on a Leash” program came to visit us on Wednesday, Jan, 9. They were Pepper and Emi. This is an animal-assisted therapy program. It has been shown to have many benefits, including decreased pain medication use and increased socialization and communication.

Rules of the Road

DIXON – The Illinois Secretary of State’s Office will have a free Rules of the Road class from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 13 at Post House Community Center, 100 W. Second St. The class is designed as a refresher course to help people prepare to take a driving test.
