I

t is a New Year and all the Holiday festivities are now put to bed. My hope for all our seniors and all of Lee County that each and every one of our residents had a safe and wonderful Holiday.

As each year turns the corner I make all these plans for the upcoming year and I am very excited if 50 percent of my plans are achieved. This past year LCCOA has been very fortunate, all but one of my projects on my list has been accomplished.

If you haven’t toured LCCOA in a while you are in for a big treat. We have a new roof over our dining room with beautiful bright skylights. The stoop

to the Ballroom has been replaced, the alley and parking lot has a new face and a nice usable sidewalk that can take you right into our center. The walls are now all water proof – Yay! No more mopping. My next goal is handicap doors. How can we be a senior center without automatic doors???

All these projects couldn’t have taken place without the caring and passionate members of our community. Each member played a role in our renovation projects. Every dollar donated brought us closer to our goals.

new year is upon us and our 2019 memberships are now available! We have already had a few new members join us! It gives me pleasure to welcome our new and existing members to the Whiteside County Senior Center and the wide array of programs, activities, and opportunities that we provide! We have a commitment to offer activities and events that are appealing to each participant. The staff takes pride in our program offerings

– from Medicare information, health and wellness activities to card games, day trips and meals. Your membership with the WCSC not only offers you a wide array of activities but it also helps our organization thrive. Your commitment to helping our organization grow is sincerely appreciated.

If you haven’t had a chance to renew your membership or become a member, we would encourage you to do so this month! January starts our

Recently, our members enjoyed our Christmas dance and I must say, it was a wonderful afternoon. For those of you who attended, I hope you feel the same! I am so very thankful for Roger and the joy he brought our group. I truly enjoyed how happy you looked while dancing the afternoon away, talking with your friends, and just enjoying the music. We hope to have Roger back again this Spring.

I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and I look forward to seeing you when you stop in to become a member in 2019!

LCCOA & WCSC | TECHNOLOGY

Help available to hear better on the phone Illinois Telecommunications Access Corp. (ITAC) has added a program to help those with cellular service who are having trouble hearing on the phone.

The program still provides free amplified telephones and captioning telephones to Illinois residents that are hard of hearing.

Applicants must be certified as hard of hearing by a doctor, nurse practitioner, or audiologist; live in Illinois; and have a service that remits to the program.

Lee County Council on Aging (LCCOA) and Whiteside County Senior Center (WCSC) are selection centers for ITAC. Walk-ins are welcomed on Mondays 9 a.m.-

1 p.m. at the WCSC. Potential applicants can call the WCSC 815622-9230 Ext. 194 or LCCOA 815288-9236 in advance to set up an appointment to see about qualifying for this wonderful program.

Cell phones must be Bluetooth capable.

Applicants who wish to apply for this program should bring in their cell phone. Please bring a phone bill with all the pages for landline service or cellular service (prepaid cell users that don’t receive a phone bill must bring the cell phone) and proof of address (driver’s license, state ID, or a bill with the applicant’s name and address on it).

Recycle cell phones, iPads and iPods

The Whiteside County Senior Center and the Lee County Council on Aging are collecting used cell phones, iPods, and iPads to be recycled.

If anyone has any of these items lying around and wants to dispose of them, drop them off at the WCSC, 1207 W. Ninth St., Sterling, or the LCCOA at 100 W. Second St., Dixon. Thank you for your donation!

Getting help in Whiteside County – The Whiteside County Senior Center (WCSC) Aging and Disabled resource staff help with a variety of programs for older adults and persons with disabilities. Our walk-in day is on Mondays from 9 a.m.1 p.m. For Medicare counseling or more detailed assistance, please call us in advance to set up an appointment. Our phone number 815-622-9230 Ext. 194.

For our clients in Erie, Fulton, Morrison, and Prophetstown, we will meet with you by appointment on our site days-just call us in advance. We do appreciate a 24-hour notice if you need to reschedule or cancel your appointment.

Hours for the ADRC Department – Our hours are from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Thursday, and 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Fridays. On Mondays we take walk-ins from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. for the License Plate Discount Application, ITAC, and the Senior Tax Assessment Freeze and/or Senior Homestead Exemption. Please note, if the WCSC is closed on a walk-in Monday due to a holiday, we will observe the walk-in day on the Tuesday following the holiday.

Tuesday-Friday are by appointment only for Medicare counseling or for other more detailed appointments. If you would like an appointment, please call our department at 815-622-9230 Ext. 194.

GINGERBREAD HOUSE COMPETITION

Gingerbread house builders get creative Our third annual Gingerbread House Competition, hosted by Lee County Council on Aging, was a great success. This year we had 18 entries, which is an increase of five gingerbread houses over 2017.

LCCOA was thrilled by the support of our community.

The winner this year in the Children Category was Ean Lemke.

Our judges felt Ean’s gingerbread

house was a “creative use of materials.”

The winner in the Family Category was the Feldbush family’s “Family Farm.” The judges stated that it was “delightful use of materials, clever concept, charming and had darling critters.”

The winner of the Organization, Corporation, Business Category went to Heritage Square. Charm-

ing assemblage – apparently many contributed to the construction of the delightful village.

The People’s Choice Award went to the McGrail family. The judges’ comments where:”Unusual concept (the Dixon Arch), good use of materials. Smells good!” The whole family was involved.

Judy Dixon and Betty Predmore graciously accepted our request to

be our judges and did a wonderful job reviewing all entries. LCCOA was impressed at the amount of time each judge spent on each entry.
