One step closer Tigers move to 4-4, one win to go to become playoff eligible

ERIE — A key fourth-down tackle followed by a 39-yard TD run by senior Blake Janssen secured the momentum for the Princeton Tigers over the host Panthers of Erie-Prophetstown Friday.

After a third-quarter Panther drive of better than five minutes marked by long runs and momentum-killing penalties, Janssen burst through the line on fourth down and tackled Panthers quarterback Nathan Pierceson.

“I knew we needed it,” Janssen said, “so I went all out.

Everyone kept their assignments and that’s the way it turned out.”

Three plays later, Janssen broke free down the right sideline and plowed through two Panthers for a touchdown to give the Tigers a two-score lead at 27-14.

“It was a big momentum shift for us,” PHS coach Jesse Snyder said of Janssen’s tackle and touchdown. “Coach (Brik) Wedekind had a three-play script set up. We marched right down. Blake made a great cut

and our offensive line maintained their blocks. I’m real proud of them.”

The Tigers (4-4, 3-2) chanted “One step closer” as they came off the field after the game. If they defeat Sherrard next week, they will become playoff eligible for the second straight year.

The Panthers (1-7, 1-4) were able to pull within a touchdown at the beginning of the fourth quarter when Pierceson scored on a 17-yard run. But the Tigers took the momentum right back when Austin Wetsel returned the subsequent kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown and a 33-21 lead. That score proved to be the final score.

The Tigers scored first and last in the back-and-forth first half to take a one-touchdown lead into the latter half of the game.

Bret Emerson scored just 33 seconds into the contest when he followed up a 59-yard run with a one-yard TD scamper.

After going back and forth, sophomore quarterback Beck Robbins broke a 14-14 tie with only 10.6 seconds left in the half when he scored on a oneyard run of his own. It was keyed by a 38-yard pass completion to keep the drive alive.

Fantastic Mr. Cox Back scores 4 TDs as Dukes hold off Rockets’ charge

ROCK FALLS – Arthur Cox helped Dixon build up a big lead, and the Dukes were able to hold off one Rock Falls comeback bid after another Friday at Hinders Field.

In the end, it was the Dukes coming away with the 42-36 win, picking up win No. 6 on the year and clinching a spot in the postseason.

Cox had more than 112 yards rushing before the end of the first quarter. He scored his third touchdown of the game with 39 seconds left in the first half, adding another with a 57-yard run up the middle in the fourth quarter.

“Arthur always gives us that effort,” Dixon coach Dave Smith said. ”He’s one heck of a kid.

That’s the effort we get from him all the time.”

The Dukes handed off to Cox eight times on the opening drive, going 78 yards in nine plays. Cox carried it the final 5 yards. That came after a 41-yard carry into the end zone earlier in the drive was called back by a penalty.

“I was really tired by the time we

drove it down there,” Cox said.

Noah Wilcox also hit Andrew Wolber on a post route for a 56-yard touchdown, and Wilcox ran one in from 57 yards, but it was Cox accounting for more than 60 percent of the Dixon yardage.

“He’s tough,” Rock Falls coach Rich Montgomery said. “He’s got good strength, good hips, good balance. He just cuts, and he’s just elusive.”

The Rock Falls offense went backward on two first-half drives, but put things together in the second half.

“They showed a lot of guts tonight,” Montgomery said. “We talked at halftime. I drew a line on the board and I put ‘Rock Falls’ on one side of it and ‘success’ on the other side. I said ‘Guys, don’t be afraid to take that step.’”

OCK FALLS – If Sportscenter wanted to put together a Top10 plays from just the Rock Falls-Dixon game, there would be more than enough material.

The Dukes got plenty of big plays early from Arthur Cox, who rushed 40 times for 255 yards, but one of his rushes late sealed the game.

With the Dukes facing a fourth-and-two with just over a minute left and looking to kill the clock with a six-point lead, Cox took the handoff and went left, seeing nothing but a wall of black and green in front of him. He made a cutback, gained enough yardage for the first down and slid to a stop.

Had he not made it, the Rockets had a chance to throw a couple of deep passes and perhaps tie the game.

With that first down, all that was left after that was for Noah Wilcox to kneel on the ball and the teams to line up to shake hands.

Crown ’em again Golden Warriors roll to second straight NIB-12 West title

Sterling High School is once again NIB-12 West conference champions.

The Golden Warriors’ potent offense and strong defense helped them cruise to a 56-12 victory over the Ottawa Tigers on Friday night at Roscoe Eades Stadium.

“Winning the conference is awesome, and it’s the best thing I’ve ever been a part of,” sophomore offensive lineman John Rahn said. “I’ve never been on a team that is more bonded.”

This is Sterling’s seventh league title since 2005. This is also Sterling’s 25th all-time conference title, which includes wins in the Rock River Conference, NCIC and NIB-12.

“That is our program’s No. 1 goal, which is to win a conference championship,” Sterling coach Jon Schlemmer said. “Our kids worked hard throughout the season and offseason to be able to accomplish that goal.”

The win against Ottawa (1-7,0-4) is Sterling’s ninth straight NIB-12 West victory. Its last lost came at Geneseo on Oct. 10, 2014. Since losing at Streator and Geneseo in back-to-back weeks in 2013, the Golden Warriors (8-0, 4-0) have gone 12-1 in league play.

“Winning the conference means a lot,” senior running back Andrew Spaulding said. “This is 2 years in a row now, and we have been working for it all year. It’s really exciting to win again.”

Sterling did most of its damage Friday night in the first half, quickly jumping out to a 49-6 lead.

Rahn helped pave the way for Sterling to rack up 396 yards of total offense, 306 of which came on the ground.

“These kids played hard,” Schlemmer said. “Our offense was dominant tonight. They played really well, and we were able to score different ways and we got some different guys in the end zone. I was happy with how we played.”

Spaulding had two scores, both from 1 yard out. But, he can’t take all the credit.

Marcos on move Polo spreads wealth in Senior Night win over Raiders

POLO – If the goal of Senior Night is to earn some recognition for upperclassmen, well, Polo’s version Friday night was quite a success.

The Marcos had far and away their best offensive performance of the season in a 49-8 victory over Ashton-Franklin Center, almost certainly wrapping up a playoff berth with the win – but that wasn’t even the most fun part for Polo’s seniors.

The victory was wrapped up early – the Marcos (5-3, 4-3) led 42-0 at halftime – allowing coach Jeff Bumsted and his staff the chance to honor the seniors in a way that has become uniquely Polo.

On their first possession of the third quarter, the Marcos lined up in a wishbone formation and, one by one, a different senior was given the handoff.

First up was running back Tristen Aguilar – no surprise there.

But senior lineman Ben Peterson, sporting No. 70 on his uniform, took the next one. Then lineman Fabian Calderon, followed by linemen Matthew Binkley, J.J. Bardell, and Marcus Almasy.

The result was (surprisingly?) successful, with the Marcos marching down to the 13-yard line. Peterson’s number was called again on fourth-and-1, and he rumbled 13 yards for a touchdown.

“That’s something [offensive coordinator Hank] Grobe tries to do every year,” Bumsted said. “Obviously, if it’s a

one-point game, we wouldn’t do it, but winning or losing, he likes to give his linemen the ball on their last home game. [Peterson] will remember that touchdown for the rest of his life.”

Aside from the parade of lineman ball carriers, Friday’s game was a showcase from the first whistle, as the Marcos amassed 175 yards of first-quarter offense, including two touchdowns by Aguilar, who ended with 118 yards on 12 carries in the game.

Mathew Cheeseman scored two touchdowns 91 seconds apart, catching a fade from sophomore quarterback Braiden Soltow for a 3-yard score before returning a fumble 32 yards to give his team a 35-0 lead midway through the second quarter. Soltow completed six of his seven pass attempts on the day for 103 yards.

In all, it was the best showing of the year for Polo, in both points scored and margin of victory. Bumsted felt good about his team’s performance in its penultimate regular season contest, but knows his team could use a win next week against an Orangeville squad that, at 4-4, will be playing for its playoff life.

“I’m expecting a tough game. Taking care of business Bruins clinch playoff bid, eye TRAC title showdown with Newman PERU — After an unbearable 0-2 start, things are looking up for the St. Bede Bruins as they are now on a six-game win streak with their latest victim coming in the form of a 49-21 drudging of the Orion Chargers Friday night at the academy.

The Bruins got out to a 14-0 lead as their defense forced the Chargers to turn over their first two possessions.

“We know what we can do on defense, and we stepped it up,” Shipp said. “We’re really sticking to our jobs and every play you have one job to do and we do it.”

Defensive back Braidy Shipp jumped in front of an Orion pass and went untouched for 23 yards for the first score. On the very next possession, the Bruins defense forced a fumble that was recovered by senior defensive back Nick Szczepaniak. That possession was punched into the end zone two plays later on a one-yard plunge from Adam Poundstone with 9:14 left in the first quarter.

“It was kind of a blown coverage. We weren’t supposed to be in man and we were, it gave me the break on the ball,” Shipp said. “It got us hype, we could really hear

the crowd going.”

The Chargers worked their way back into the game knotting it up at 21-21 on a one-yard touchdown run from senior quarterback Craig Matson. But the Bruins quickly shut down any momentum, as they scored less than four minutes later on another Poundstone plunge, this time from five yards with 1:23 in the half.

St. Bede continued to lay it on from there in the second half, punching in three more touchdowns to put 28 unanswered points on the board and blow out the Chargers in convincing fashion.

“We had a great drive to end the first half and then we came out and took five or six minutes off the clock in the second half and we scored. PORT BYRON – The Bureau Valley Storm wanted to make sure any adversity on their side was nothing to worry about.

Playing without head coach Spencer Davis, who was suspended by the school this week, the Storm didn’t let his missing presence hurt them in a 43-22 road win against the Riverdale Rams.

Storm coaches would not comment on the matter, and stated that any questions regarding the matter would be handled by Bureau Valley Principal and Athletic Director Eric Lawson. Efforts to reach Lawson for comment regarding the matter were unsuccessful as of press time.

Davis weaved his way around several blocks on the Storm’s third play from scrimmage for an 84-yard score, which was answered with Brady Secrist’s 5-yard run and a Parker Corson conversion for an 8-7 Rams lead.

“We gave up a lot of big plays out there,” said Secrist, who led the Rams (2-6, 0-4) with 104 yards on 17 carries. “It was hard to stop their quarterback.

He’s a hell of a player. He’s so good.”

Fulton edges Rockets Fischbach returns two kicks for TDs; Clippers shut out Indians

Austin Schroeder’s 9-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Sweenie with 46 seconds to play lifted Fulton to a 28-27 victory against Rockridge in a key Three Rivers Rock game on Friday night in Edgington.

Cole McClary’s extra-point kick provided the margin of victory for the Steamers (7-1, 5-0).

Michael Pidde rushed 19 times for 107 yards and one TD to pace the Fulton offense.

Sweenie also threw for 150 yards.

Riley Fetterer rushed 26 times for 137 yards, and passed for another 146 yards to lead the Rockets. He scored on TD runs of 15 and 14 yards, and also tossed scoring passes of 65 yards to Xavior Calvin and 20 yards to Reed Nelson.

West Hancock 40, Morrison 35: Ethan Fischbach returned two kickoffs for touchdowns, and hauled in a 40-yard pass from Reilly Dolan, but it wasn’t enough as the Mustangs fell to the visiting Titans.

Fischbach’s kick returns were from 88 and 87 yards to account for Morrison’s first two scores. The Mustangs took

a 35-34 lead on a 74-yard run from Jarrett Ruchotzke with 9:09 to play, but West Hancock (8-0) struck back on a 5-yard run by Bryce Wilson with 1 minute to play.

The Titans were led by Will Fox, who had 29 carries for 318 yards, including TD runs of 5, 72 and 17 yards.

Amboy 7, Pecatonica 0: Dallas Schafer’s 25-yard TD reception in the third quarter was the only score of the game as the Clippers edged the Indians at Pecatonica.

Dakota 27, Milledgevile 0: The Missiles made the long trip to Dakota and were blanked by the Indians.

West Carroll 48, Galena 3: Kaleb Hartman receovered a fumbled kickoff in the end zone of the game’s first play to get West Carroll off to a fast start, and the Tunder rolled to a win against the visiting Pirates.

Kaleb Plattenberger scored on a TD run of 10 yards, and caught a 25-yard scoring pass from Kody Plattenberger in the second quarter.

LANARK – Chances came and chances went for the EastlandPearl City Wildcatz on Friday night.

The Wildcatz pulled within a touchdown in the second half of Forreston, the top ranked team in Class 1A, but the Cardinals delivered the knockout blow with a fourth-quarter touchdown in a 21-7 NUIC Northwest game.

The win moves the Cardinals to 8-0 overall and 7-0 in conference.

“They make you earn it,” Forreston coach Denny Diduch said.

“They came out in the second half and made a push, and thankfully we were able to answer with that score.”

Keegan Schubert pulled EPC (7-1, 6-1) within a touchdown with 1:54 left in the third quarter with a 6-yard touchdown run.

Schubert had 55 of his 77 yards in the second half.

“Coaches came up to me at half time and said that I was a better back than I showed in the first half,” Schubert said. “So I just started running harder.

“We didn’t come out tonight playing physical. We did that in the second half, and when we

scored, I thought the momentum had really changed.”

The teams traded possessions after the touchdown before Forreston mounted a 12-play drive that chewed up 57 yards and 4 minutes of clock. Anthony Christian put the Cardinals up 21-7 with a 5-yard run with 6:23 left.

EPC started the second half with a drive that stalled out at the Forreston 16-yard line. It was the second time that the Forreston defense held backed up close to their end zone.

“You never want to be in that position, but it doesn’t change the angles and the depth of the field,” Diduch said. “The defense made the plays down there when we need them.”

Same old, same old Hawks, Cardinals enjoy intense late-season showdown

STILLMAN VALLEY – It was a typical Oregon and Stillman Valley football game – over in less than 2 hours and nary a pass was completed.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, which had more total yards rushing (278236) than Stillman Valley, they lost for the seventh straight time.

In a 21-6 loss to the Cardinals, Oregon advanced into the red zone four times and failed to show any points for it. A touchdown run by Devin DeHaan in the final minute of the game finally got the Hawks on the board.

“We’ve had trouble finishing drives this year,” Oregon coach John Bothe said.

Oregon hurt itself by getting into a 14-0 hole early in the game, eerily similar to a loss to North Boone in Week 3.

“It was just like that,” Bothe said.

“And like that game, I was really happy with how we played defense the rest of the way.”

Noah Ledger capped off the opening drive for Stillman with an 18-yard touchdown run for a 6-0 lead. Minutes later, it was Nolan McNames getting loose for a 70-yard scamper on the quarterback option.

“They caught us in a formation we weren’t used to seeing,” Bothe said.

Oregon came into the game keying on Brady Atchison, who carried 81

times in the last two games. He only had three first-half carries, but the Cardinals led 14-0.

In the third quarter, a 46-yard run

by Chase Prehn put Oregon into the red zone, but a fumble one play later killed the drive.

Taking over on its own 19-yard line, Stillman converted three straight fourth downs on a 21-play drive to go up 21-0. Atchison, who had 19 second-half carries, went seven yards for the score.

“On those fourth downs, we didn’t have any breakdowns,” SV coach Mike Lalor said.

Three years after winning its fifth state trophy, Stillman (3-4, 3-5) continues a rare playoff drought, but played three undefeated teams (Byron, Genoa-Kingston, Johnsburg) this season.

“They’ll probably all finish undefeated,” Lalor said. “I wonder if anyone in Illinois has ever had a schedule with three 9-0 teams?”

Neither Bothe nor Lalor, the longesttenured coaches in the BNC with 18 years each, were discouraged.

“This game still had a playoff feel to it,” Lalor said. “There was a big crowd and great intensity. It was small-town football, played with class and respect.”

“No matter what the records, it’s always a good game with Stillman,” Bothe said.
