GRAY AREA Right Fit owner builds specialized programs for young and old

I

t was 30 years ago in the pop film classic “Ferris Bueller's Day Off” that Ferris said, “The question isn't what are we going to do? The question is what aren't we going to do?”

You could say the same thing about Suzanne Gray's career in exercise science, health, physical education, and athletics. And she has continued to accomplish great things in those related fields for more than three decades.

Today though, Gray's primary focus is as the owner of Right Fit, a sport, fitness and wellness facility in Willowbrook.

She's also very excited and busy with the addition of a second location coming to La Grange in the fall.

Right Fit isn't a typical gym. Not only was it designed to deliver results from all ages - from young children to senior citizens its program is based on achieving specific goals. Anyone can join a gym and use a variety of exercise machines and weights, but at Right Fit, customers benefit far more from small group training, as the specialized coaching staff guides them through a variety of challenging workouts.

“We remind everyone that comes in here that it's all about you,” Gray says.

“That's why the initial assessment is key in finding out their true goals. There are a lot of people that come in and say they can't do things, but there's no ‘can't' with our trainers. I don't know what goes on at other places, but it's rare for people that come here not to stay.”

Exercise doesn't come naturally for everyone. Many fear it, and changing

lifestyle is a big step. Those are the people who really drive Gray to do the work she does everyday.

“Those are the people we like to see come in here,” she says. “They're really frightened to be here, but if we can encourage them to come in here three times a week for 30 minutes of 1-on-1 training, and then into a group class, that's really a reassurance and what sells us. Our entire focus remains on you.”

In the past 10 years, Gray has given special attention to those with autism and other physical and mental challenges.

She developed the Raise the Bar© Autism Fitness Program, which is individualized to the distinctive needs of each patient, incorporating a variety of fun fitness activities.

“I was in Tampa many years ago giving a speech for an educational conference, and I was asked if I could write a book,” Gray says. “That got me out of my comfort zone a little bit and I started working with youth with autism, adults on the spectrum and others with special needs.”

She never could have imagined the path she would weave after just getting started. After graduate school, and while working her first job on Michigan Avenue in Chicago, Gray was introduced to the children of Jose Clemente Orozco Academy.

She was amazed by the lack of a structured fitness program at the school and created, “The Magnificent Workout for Kids.” still in use today.

“I fell in love with those children and wanted them to have the best fitness possible,” she says. “That really turned my life around.”

The program was named Illinois' best elementary school program and even received a visit by bodybuilder/actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, former president of the President's Fitness Council.

Since developing that program, Gray has created, directed and taught countless programs throughout the suburbs for park districts, schools, businesses and other organizations.

Despite her busy schedule, Gray makes sure to maintain her own health and happiness. The former cheerleader with the Chicago Luvabulls, who also was one of the top finishers in the Chicago Marathon enjoys cycling, loves animals, and values time and family.

“As I get older I try to keep it simple,” she says. “Less is more.”

Ultra-runner jets off on 100-mile courses, with help from cross-training and meditation

When Meghan Kennihan ran track in high school, her coach would punish the team with two-mile runs. But it wasn’t much incentive for Kennihan, who loved the long run.

Today, the 33-year-old from La Grange is a certified personal trainer and running coach. She is an ultra-runner, completing distances of up to 100 miles, and holds powerlifting records as well.

Kennihan loves the challenge of ultrarunning. “For me, I get into the zone. It’s my time, it’s very stress relieving and a challenge. You get dead legs but when it’s over you get that runner’s high. After my first 50-mile race I was done – but the next day I thought, ‘I feel like running today.’ It’s addicting.”

of my clients are businessmen who are constantly traveling to places like Japan. So we make a plan that fits their schedule. Or moms who only have say a couple of hours to work out in the morning,” she says.

Kennihan strongly believes in cross training. She does yoga, elliptical and rowing machines daily. She also does a lot of strength training, cardio and biking.

An avid biker, she takes 80- to 100-mile bike rides every other weekend.

Kennihan says it’s important to eat more and often. “Every client says they’re only eating 1,200 calories a day. If you exercise five times a week, the body goes into starvation mode,” she says, adding she eats 2,000 calories a day. “People are always saying they need to avoid fat. But you should see how many sticks of Kerrygold butter or coconut oil I go through in a week!”

“I’m huge on cross training for runners.

My body will break down if I do the same thing all the time. I can’t do that,” she explains.

A running coach works with clients on gait and running form and does strength assessments, all to avoid injury and knee problems and build strength, distance and speed.

Another thing you can’t do, Kennihan says, is forget to rest. One of the most common problems among dedicated runners is that they train too hard for too long. The coach finds she doesn’t need to push her clients to exercise – she pushes them to recover.

“A-type people need a coach to pull them back rather than push them in,” she says.

“People feel pressure or feel guilty. So I tell them, ‘Tell yourself ‘no’ and blame me.’”

“Sleep,” she insists. “I’d rather someone do a 15-minute run with more sleep. Your body and mind repair. With four hours of sleep, your stress levels soar.”

Which is why she’s recently taken up meditation.

“I do stress meditation in 10 minutes. I get up earlier in the morning. It’s amazing. It frees my head and gives me the space to be able to push through hard times.”

Kennihan also is an avid powerlifter.

Standing 5-feet-3-inches, and weighing 100 pounds, she can squat 150 pounds and bench 100 pounds. “I love going into the gym and guys see this tiny woman and think, ‘She can’t do that.’ In a dead lift I can do two times my body weight. It’s such an empowering thing.”

“It’s benefitted my running,” she says. “I was getting a lot of stress fractures, and now when I do things like work out with

Her competitive spirit was evident early on, as an active student-athlete. In high school, Kennihan played tennis, cheerleading and track and field, earning MVP honors twice in both tennis and cheerleading. In college, she taught fitness classes and her sophomore year she discovered distance running, entering the Illinois marathon in 2009 and nearly qualifying for the Olympic trials. Her accomplishments then, and today, serve as inspiration to others.

“Clients beg me for my race reports when I run these big races. Little girls of my clients love to hear what Coach Meghan does. For girls it’s not just running. Girls can be strong.”

Her dream is to teach high school physical education classes. “I never say never because I usually end up doing it.

I’m always coaching and teaching.”

A once-solitary pursuit becomes a decidedly communal experience

Jourdan Przybyla was a busy kid. Most of her weekends were spent with her dad, out and about in the Chicago area, checking out local places and trying new activities. One Saturday, he took her indoor climbing, and her life changed forever.

While in college at North Central in Naperville, she started working for Vertical Endeavors in Warrenville, and has spent the past year-and-ahalf as the group sales and program coordinator at Vertical Endeavors climbing facility in Glendale Heights.

Vertical Endeavors is the largest climbing facility in the United States with more than 45,000 feet of climbing walls and routes that rise up to 30 feet.

“I try to climb about once a week now,” she says. “My schedule is pretty on and off. I may climb one day for two hours or it might be four. It’s a great thing for your body, a great workout and I love the community.”

the atmosphere at Vertical Endeavors has been made highly social. Group outings, competitive teams, parties, and even just the high energy nature of the open gym itself, lend credence to the idea that rock climbing is better when it’s done with friends.

Outdoor lessons are offered at Devil’s Lake in Baraboo, Wisconsin, twice a month through September. The company also offers excursions and group experiences in rock and ice climbing.

And while it’s certainly both challenging and fun, what might be startling is that it can be calming, which is another reason why Przybyla continues to climb.

“It's a huge stress reliever and it's always a great feeling when you're done,” she says. “You might be sore, but it's a good feeling. It's like meditation when you're on the wall.

It's just you, figuring out how to get your way to the top.”

ATHLETICISM AND INSPIRATION This year, our nation celebrates the 25th anniversary of the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Passed by Congress in 1990, the ADA was the nation's first comprehensive civil rights law addressing the needs of people with disabilities, prohibiting discrimination in employment, public services, public accommodations, and telecommunications.

STROKE of genius Alyssa Gialamas swims to the record books as paralympian competitor

Alyssa Gialamas is a Naperville native who has launched herself to fame with her swimming accomplishments.

The 17-time American record holder won a bronze medal at the 2013 World Championships for the 200 medley relay, and swims for the Loyola University in Maryland Division I swim team, where she attends college. But her favorite accomplishment was competing as a 2012 London Paralympian. At the London 2012 Games 604 swimmers from 74 countries competed in 148 medal events.

“It doesn't get better than that,” she says.

“I got to compete at the world level and stand on the world stage.”

Gialamas was born with arthrogryposis, a condition affecting the muscle development in the joints. She needs braces on her legs to walk, and sometimes uses a wheelchair. However, she uses no adaptations once she’s in the water swimming.

“My family was always really into sports since I was really little.” Gialamas explains, “My parents grew up playing sports and my brother and sister played

as well. They always encouraged me to find something I loved and do something bigger.”

“I had a lot of energy so participating in sports was good thing,” she adds.

Her motivation in competition comes from a focused work ethic and an uncompromising nature in the pool.

“I always think there's something to be better at – especially in swimming.”

Gialamas says. “There are a hundred things to do right and a hundred things that could be done wrong but I'm always trying something new to perform better.”

Swimming was one of eight sports practiced at the first Paralympic Games in 1960 in Rome, Italy and is now one of the most popular.

Both male and female competitors, who are classified on their functional ability to perform each stroke, test their skills in freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke and medley events.

Athletes can have a physical, visual or intellectual impairment. As a result the rules of the International Swimming

Federation (FINA) are modified to include optional starting platforms and in-water starts for some athletes or the use of signals or “tappers” for those with visual impairments. No prostheses or assistive devices are permitted in the pool.

Like anyone, Gialamas has moments when she doesn’t feel like training.

“There always are times when you're just so tired and you don't want to get in the pool for a 5 a.m. practice,” she says, “but I have amazing teammates and an amazing coach, so I'm never alone and they're all doing it with me. They're all suffering with me. It motivates me to see other people doing it with me. That's what keeps me going.”

“I really want to get on the medal stand and I think I have a shot, but I definitely need to work as hard as I can to accomplish that,” She says, “Then I want to represent Team USA at the Rio Paralympics.”

And while Gialamas may describe herself as a “perfectionist” when it comes to swimming, she approaches her other life pursuits – school, family, friends – a bit more casually.

Gialamas is genuinely enjoying her summer but she’s definitely not just relaxing.

“Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays I swim from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. followed by an hour of weight lifting. On Tuesdays and Thursdays I swim from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. and then again from 2 p.m. to 4

“In order to be good at swimming you have to be happy and in order to be happy you have to do things outside of swimming that make you happy. I am more than just a swimmer, and having everything come together is important. ”

ADAPTING TO CIRCUMSTANCE

Competitive athlete changes approach, helps others

I don't have time to work out.

I’m not fast enough to run in a race.

I’m not skilled enough to compete at that level.

Whether wanting to get moving for the first time, in awhile or taking workouts or competition to another level it is easy to come up with excuses not to.

But, Jason Stubbeman of Downers Grove doesn’t believe in excuses.

“There’s always a way to get something done,” he says. You can make time in your schedule, find a way to get into that race, train with the right people and figure out a way to participate.

He should know. In addition to having come back from his own life-changing injury, Stubbeman now helps others find a way to adapt sports to fit their www.suburbanlifefit.com

In 2005, Stubbeman was finishing up college as an outdoor recreation major, running a five minute mile and on a road bike 60 miles a day training to compete in the Ironman triathlon. He was bouldering - a form of rock climbing done without ropes or harnesses - at a university rock climbing wall where he spent a lot of his time. He slipped. He had fallen off the wall dozens of times, but this time was different.

Three hospitals, a few ambulance rides and surgeries later Stubbeman woke to be told there was a 98 percent chance he would never walk. He had shattered the talus bone in his left ankle - a bone that is significant in weight bearing and maneuvering.

Stubbeman no longer has side–to-side motion in his left foot. The top of his foot is heavily arthritic and soft. He can no longer run or jump.

But Stubbeman didn’t let that stop him. He underwent therapy and worked to regain some of what he had lost.

“I did beat the 98 percent. I can walk fine.

I just can’t do the athletic things I typically would,” he says.

His plans of making a living backpacking through the woods derailed, Stubbeman shifted to management logistics and did an internship as a camp operations manager. He got into recreation programming full-time and with the assistance of his wife Ashley, a

therapeutic recreation specialist, began to look into athletics through adaptation.

his own experience to help others and continue his own fitness journey.

He got up on a bike seven months after his accident, but quickly found that wasn’t going to be a possibility.

“It’s a grey, tricky position,” he says of appearing able bodied to many, but not being able to perform beyond that level.

At the same time he isn’t dealing with some of the challenges of those with more severe disabilities. “That has been the hardest part from a personal perspective.

I don’t fit on either side of the coin.”

So Stubbeman found other ways to compete. He trained for and completed the 2008 Chicago Marathon in a racing chair.

He has competed and now coaches a wheelchair basketball team. He never really enjoyed basketball previously, but found playing in a wheelchair requires more strategy and the game is much more complex.

“There have been a couple of sports I have found like that. That’s been good,” he says.

He does lots of yoga and still does indoor rock climbing - now wearing harnesses and ropes.

Stubbeman has two children - daughter Diem, 3, and son Oakley, 6 months.

“They are my main motivation and reason for staying fit,” he says.

Stubbeman also has drawn inspiration from some of the clients he has helped.

He works with wounded military service men and women, people born with disability - some who have never tried sports, and others rehabilitating or facing an injury that has them rearranging their view on competitive sports and how they will navigate life.

Stubbeman has learned from adaptive sports that participating is sometimes just a matter of making adjustments to your perspective and approach and putting in effort and extra work. When applicable, he shares his story with other athletes overcoming obstacles.

“That feeling I had the first time I was on my road bike after the accident, it cannot compare to anything else in the world.

It sparked my interest in working with adaptive sports,” he says. “I never really thought about never being able to do things again. In terms of actually trying - it was never an option not to try. There was certainly plenty of doubt, but not trying was never an option.”

Many of them are unaware of Stubbeman’s story. His injury is invisible to most. Regardless, he is able to pull from

CANCER: TO SCREEN OR NOT TO SCREEN

T

hey are our fathers and our brothers. Our husbands and friends. Our children’s fathers and our own sons. It goes without saying that we want them healthy and safe. And as they age, one common concern is the risk of prostate cancer.

It is one of the most common types of cancer in men. One in three men aged between 40 and 60 has traces of prostate cancer, with the risk rising as men grow older. There is a test to screen for it, called prostate-specific-antigen (PSA), but it currently is under great debate. The quandary: an elevated score may or may not signify cancer; if there’s cancer, it may or may not ever progress; and exploring further with a biopsy may or may not cause complications.

That’s why members of the American Urological Association (AUA) recently changed their screening recommendations from encouraging healthy men over the age of 40 to have it to discouraging screening of men who are at average-risk under the age of 55. According to the AUA, men should “weigh the benefits against the potential harms.”

“Many of my patients tell me they heard that the PSA blood test is a bad test,” says Michael Rashid, M.D., urologist at Illinois Urological Institute, which has offices in Geneva, Aurora and Winfield. “The truth is that it is still a useful tool but like any tool, one needs to know how to use it properly.”

¢ THE PROSTATE AND PSA The prostate is a gland, about the size of a walnut, which helps make semen.

It also makes the PSA protein. In some men with cancer, PSA levels may be elevated. According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF), there is no unanimous opinion in the medical community regarding the benefits of prostate cancer screening. Those who advocate regular screening believe that finding and treating prostate cancer early offers men more treatment options with potentially fewer side effects.

Those who recommend against regular screening note that because most prostate cancers grow very slowly, the side effects of treatment would likely outweigh any benefit that might be derived from detecting cancer at a stage when it is unlikely to cause problems.

Indeed, according to Dr. Rashid, “the chance that prostate cancer will be fatal is only about 2 to 3 percent.” The National Cancer Institute (NCI) noted that, more than half of all American men have some cancer in their prostate glands by the age of 80 but most of these cancers never pose a serious threat to these men’s’ health.

“The bottom line is that PSA testing is associated with some risks, such as temporary biopsy related infection, side effects of treatment, and treatment of cancer that may have never become a health problem,” Dr. Rashid explains.

“However, in the right patient, PSA testing can result in treatment and cure of a cancer that would have shorted a life.”

¢ RISK FACTORS FOR PROSTATE CANCER, ACCORDING TO NCI: • OLDER AGE – Men who are 50 or older have a higher risk of prostate cancer.

• RACE – African-American men have the highest risk for getting this cancer.

For these men, the disease tends to start at younger ages and grows faster than in men of other races. The next race to have a high risk of developing prostate cancer is white men.

• FAMILY HISTORY – Men whose fathers or brothers have had prostate cancer have two to three times higher risk of getting it themselves. Men from families with a history of breast cancer also have a higher risk.

• DIET – Men who eat high fat diets are more likely to get prostate cancer. ¢ SYMPTOMS, ACCORDING TO THE NCI: • Trouble passing urine • Frequent urge to pass urine, especially at night • Weak or interrupted urine stream • Pain or burning when passing urine • Blood in the urine or semen • Painful ejaculation • Nagging pain in the back, hips or pelvis ¢ TREATMENTS, ACCORDING TO DR. RASHID: • Surgical removal of the prostate or destruction of the prostate by radiation or freezing • A strategy called “watchful waiting,” available for those men with less dangerous forms of prostate cancer. The benefit is that the patient is able to avoid the side effects associated with prostate removal or destruction.

• For advanced prostate cancer that already has spread from the prostate to other distant areas, hormonal and chemotherapy treatment options can slow cancer progression.

¢ POSSIBLE PERMANENT SIDE EFFECTS OF TREATMENTS, ACCORDING TO PCF: • Urinary incontinence or leakage • Rectal bleeding, diarrhea or urgency • Erectile dysfunction • Infertility ¢ PREVENTING OR DELAYING PROSTATE CANCER According to PCF, there are steps people can take with hopes of delaying or preventing the onset of prostate cancer.

These include:: • Eating fewer calories or exercising more so that you maintain a healthy weight.

• Keeping the amount of fat from red meat and dairy products to a minimum.

• Being mindful of calcium intake. Avoid taking more than 1,500 mg of calcium a day.

• Eating more fish because of its omega-3 fatty acids.

• Incorporating tomatoes cooked with olive oil, cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower, soy and green tea into your diet.

• Avoiding smoking and drinking alcohol only in moderation. ¢ ADVANCEMENTS TO COME According to NCI, researchers are working to learn more about the PSA test’s ability to help doctors tell the difference between prostate cancer and benign prostate problems, and the best thing to do if a man has a high PSA level.

“I believe that on the horizon are noninvasive tests that will better detect prostate cancer,” says Dr. Rashid. “I also think that advances will focus on better assessment of which prostate cancer patients need to be treated, rather than on new treatment methods.”

“SHUT UP, LEGS!” with BRYAN VANZANTEN

A

nyone who has even a fleeting interest in professional road cycling knows the simple phrase; “Shut up, legs!” This quote was uttered in 2012 by German professional cyclist Jens Voight, a well-respected and admired rider for his tenacity and aggressive riding style. This seemingly simple phrase is actually much more complex in application.

If you use a bicycle only for recreation or short commuting, then this phrase probably doesn’t have much meaning for you. However, when cycling is an integral part of your fitness routine or you compete against others in any of its disciplines (mountain bike, road racing, cyclocross, triathlon, etc.) or with yourself in marathon or ultramarathon cycling events (metric century, century or further) then you need to understand its complexity.

The statement, “Shut up, legs” is more about mental management than anything physical. During any endurance event you had better be listening to what your body is telling you or it will end badly. Anyone who has experienced ‘The Bonk’ knows what I am talking about. If you aren’t familiar with how your body responds to specific stressors then you have no idea when you can push through the discomfort and still go on. That’s why I call burning legs at the end of a long climb or burning lungs after a sprint “discomfort,” because usually, it can be overcome quickly. Pain, on the other hand, usually indicates a problem that may need immediate attention (think sprain, strain, tear, break, dislocation).

After we have reached a certain level of physical ability, the mental management aspect becomes just as, if not more important. What we think to ourselves has a subliminal effect on our performance.

While experiencing extreme “discomfort”

our mental conversation often determines whether we finish on the podium or not at all. So what to do? We test ourselves.

Cyclists are known to endure suffering at greater levels than most athletes. We are asked to put out 100 percent effort over an extended period of time. (I would like to point out there is no 110 percent, 125 percent, or 150 percent when it comes to effort. 100 percent is the maximum, all of it. If you think you can push beyond, then it wasn’t really all of it to begin with.)

Through training, our maximum effort will increase and change how much we can do and for how long. We have to work hard, near our threshold, to test what we can endure. Getting to know our capabilities and increasing the discomfort as we adapt is how we get stronger, faster, and build greater endurance.

This is why setting long and short-range goals is important: they help inspire confidence in our abilities and enhance our mental toughness. Achieving short-range goals helps gauge progress and allows us to put a check in that mental box in our heads. The more checked boxes, the more assured we will be that we are ready for the big event. It is only after we have put in the time and effort to push ourselves to near threshold when will we be confident enough to say, “Shut up, legs” and have it mean something.

NORRIS RECREATION CENTER MARKS 40 YEARS Facility provides indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, fitness classes to the community

T

he John B. Norris Recreation Center has been getting area families in shape for the last 4 decades, since Dellora and Lester Norris donated land to the School District, and an initial gift of $4.25 million toward construction of a cultural arts center and a recreation center. The center is named for one of the couple’s children.

school district plans to renovate the pool next summer.

The Norris Center includes four indoor tennis courts, an aerobics center and fitness area, as well as an Olympic-sized pool that is used by the St. Charles swim team.

“I really loved swimming, and there was no other place to swim at the time,” Horyn says. “It’s one of the best pools I have ever swam in. The laps are wider, and the water temperature is perfect. I don’t know what I would do without that place.”

“What’s nice is that having the only indoor tennis facility in the Tri-Cities and having the only 50-meter indoor pool, and the fact that we are [an] aquatics, tennis and health club combination, it really serves families in a full capacity,” says Jon Monken, the center’s executive director. “It’s really been an asset to the community.”

Monken, a former St. Charles alderman, has been at the center for 30 years, since it was set up as a nonprofit organization. The St. Charles Park District ran the facility for the first 10 years of its operation, he says.

The complex is continually being upgraded. New lights for the tennis courts soon will be installed, and the

“A couple of years ago, they put in a whole new filtration system and air system,” Monken says.

Ellen Horyn, 70, of West Chicago started going to Norris Recreation Center shortly after it opened. She has an annual membership to the center.

Membership has remained steady over the years, Monken says. In addition to providing monthly and annual options, the center also offers daily rates, he says.

Norris fitness instructor Patti Turk, 51, has been helping folks get fit for 28 years. She teaches spin and cardio classes, as well as weight training and a senior fitness class.

“I love helping people become healthy and strong,” Turk says. “It’s very rewarding when they tell me that aches and pains have gone away, or they feel energized. For instance, one of my seniors the other day told me that

“They look at the bigger picture,” she says. “They look at the members and what their interests are.”

Schlomann agreed the partnership has been good.

“Swimming pools, as an example, are expensive items for communities to support, and the fact that we’re able to do it in a way that the pool is not just utilized by the school district is a much better use of a very expensive resource that is part of this community,” Schlomann says.

BENSENVILLE 5K TO HONOR VETERANS, LOCAL COACH

n Saturday, August 1, a 5K run and walk will wind through the wooded streets of the White Pines Subdivision in unincorporated Addison Township. Running enthusiasts, homeowners and spectators look forward to the event, held each August for the last 12 years. This year’s fun run and walk, The Red, White & Blue, John Kurtz 5KRun/ Walk, is presented by the Bensenville Park District and Village of Bensenville and will kick off at 8 a.m. in Pines Park, 4N500 Church Road, Bensenville.

Like last year, the run/walk honors veterans and will help raise awareness for the Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies Program., which with the cooperation of licensed fitness centers throughout the country, offers memberships and training sessions free to qualified veterans.

Each facility and fitness professional complete specific training on veteran culture, PTSD, MST, injuries and illness specific to veterans and adaptive equipment. Often veterans have unique physical, environmental, and social needs after time in service. HMHB facilities accommodate these unique needs by creating a “veteran friendly” atmosphere.

They re-create an environment promoting healthy living, fitness and camaraderie with a community-based platform. A veteran’s assigned personal trainer

simulates a “battle buddy” in the gym and this adds to the support structure of monthly networking events that enable positive community involvement.

“We felt Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies was a perfect fit for our run theme ‘in honor of our veterans’, says Race Director Christine Hartnett.

The race also recognizes Coach John Kurtz for his 40 years of training at Fenton High School, Harnett says. Kurtz is currently the Varsity Head Coach for Boys Track & Field and Cross County, and has coached several all-state athletes and won numerous conference championships.

The event, open to runners and walkers of all ages, will offer performance shirt, run goodie bags, refreshments, and entertainment. Awards will be given to top finishers in a variety of categories. The fee is $25 before race day and $35 day of race with the race limited to 400 participants and goodie bags. Runners and walkers may pre-register by 2 p.m. Friday, July 30. Runners have the option to pick up their race bibs, goodie bag and run shirt before the run. Packet pick-up will be held for two days at Fleet Feet Sports, 124 E. Schiller Street, Elmhurst. Runners are encouraged to pick up their run packets from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, July 25 or from 3-7 p.m.Thursday, July 30.
