id you have a Merry Christmas? I sure hope so. Here at the Senior Center, we enjoyed so many festive times that it’s hard to name them all. Many of you came and helped us decorate the Center for the season and it has looked great. December opened with our annual Christmas Walk breakfast and Santa’s Workshop. Though it was cold, we had more than 300 people come through the doors, and a lot of happy eaters and shop-
pers. Santa, Mrs. Claus, and many helpers, including some of Santa’s elves, made it extra festive. Then, throughout the month, we enjoyed many programs relating to Christmas – from line dancers to crafting, to a very special performance by the Dixon High School Madrigal Singers. It was great to see so many people taking part in these programs, and I’d like to remind readers that most of the activities here at the Senior Center are open to people of

Last year the winner of the raffle walked away with $1,900, and LCCOA spent our share of the money to purchase new comput-
ers for our computer lab. Let’s make this year even bigger! Get your tickets at the Dixon Senior Center or from one of our employees or board members. Or perhaps you would be interested in being a volunteer seller for us. The more people selling, the more the pot grows, and our winner and the Center will benefit. hat are your expectations for 2014? As we begin to look toward next year, it is time to start planning how we are going to make a difference in someone’s life! That someone can be you, or it can be a friend, neighbor, relative, or perhaps someone you haven’t yet met. I was reading about two teenagers who decided they wanted to be superheroes and do random acts of kind-
ness for people they didn’t know. They gave a homeless person a coat to keep warm and some money to purchase some food. The person fell down on their knees and thanked God for bringing these two teens into his life. What are you going to do in 2014 to make an impact on someone’s life? Earlier this month, I watched a group of volunteers and staff work together to organize Whiteside County Senior
Center’s Fourth Annual Santa’s Workshop and Breakfast with Santa event. It was amazing to watch everyone work together to take the boxes of donated items and put them out on the table. On Tuesday, we were worried about the amount of gifts we had collected. Was this more or less than last year? Will there be enough for everyone to be able to

Will Medicare call and ask for information? Dear Marci, I was contacted by an unknown caller who said that he needed my Medicare number and bank account information due to changes in the Affordable Care Act. Are Medicare representatives allowed to call and ask me for that type of personal information? – Ralph, Greenwich, Conn. Dear Ralph, This is a very important question to ask, particularly since there is so much
confusion surrounding the Affordable Care Act and Medicare. To answer your question, Medicare representatives will never call you and ask for personal information like your bank account number, Medicare number or Social Security number. People with Medicare do not have to give out their personal information to Medicare representatives as a result of the Affordable Care Act, also known as the health care law. In addition, Medicare private plans like Medicare Advantage plans
and Medicare Part D plans cannot call and ask for your financial or personal information. In fact, plan representatives cannot call or email you if you have never been a member of the plan and you did not invite the plan to contact you. In general, be wary of websites, callers or individuals that ask for personal information, like your bank account number or Social Security number. For example, you should be suspicious of callers who claim to
work for Medicare and ask for your bank account information. Know that you should not give out your personal information to unidentified callers, as there have been many instances of people giving out their information to callers pretending to be government officials. You should also refrain from giving out your personal, health or financial information to strangers who come to your home uninvited. Remember, you can always call 800-MEDICARE, before giving out

ITEMS TO NOTE Scoot your boots to line dancing classes Boot scoot, grapevine, strut, and shuffle into 2014 with line dancing classes at Whiteside County Senior Center and Lee County Council on Aging! The line dancing classes start at 11 a.m. Friday at WCSC, and 10 a.m. Tuesday at LCCOA. Whether you are an experienced line dancer, or if you are just jumping in – we invite you. Line dancing provides an excellent aerobic workout and is wonderful exercise for balance, coordination, and memory. While the weather may be freezing outside, we’ve got a warm place, a variety of dances, and toe tappin’ tunes at WCSC or LCCOA line dance classes.
Volunteers needed at Dixon Senior Center A free community meal from Walmart Distribution Center on Nov. 21 turned out to be a huge success! About 350 people came to eat turkey, stuffing, vegetable, drink and dessert. We thank you Walmart, we appreciate it!
50/50 tickets are available Want to help support Lee County Council on Aging and have the chance to win a chunk of change? Then buy some 50/50 raffle tickets. Money raised will help support a variety of Senior Services in Lee County. We are selling raffle tickets up until the drawing March 12 at our Annual Chili Supper. Last year’s lucky winner, Kristy McClain, won $1,900. With the $1,900 to LCCOA we were able to purchase new computers for our community computer lab. You may purchase tickets from LCCOA staff or board members, or stop in the center at 100 W. Second St. in Dixon. Tickets are $1 for one or $5 for six.

Stop and shop The Emporium Happy New Year from the Emporium Thrift Center. Looking back we are thankful for all the many donations we received daily in spite of the sidewalk construction, the community always gave and gave. We have met a lot of new customers and enjoyed seeing the regulars. All and all we are so grateful. The volunteers do an awesome job of keeping the racks and shelves stocked. Hats off to all of them. So let’s all pull together to make the New Year just as good or better. So have a good year and stop on by. As the first of the year rolls around we all might need some things to keep us occupied in the house. I thought I would mention
some of the things we have at the Emporium to help with that. We have books for both adults and children, both paperbacks and hard covers. Our magazines and crafting books might give you some new ideas. We have puzzles, records, cassettes and VHS tapes. If you still have one of those machines we have the movies. Make the popcorn and kickback with a movie. Who cares if it’s cold outside? We have decided that each weekend in January we will have a sale. Watch

ee County Council on Aging, Robert Fulton Community Center and Transit Facility, and Whiteside County Senior Center are selection centers for the free amplified telephone program sponsored by the Illinois Telecommunications Access Corporation. You need to be certified as hard of hearing, be an Illinois resident, and have a landline telephone to qualify for this program. Please bring your phone bill with all the pages, proof of address (driver’s license, state ID, or a bill with your name and address on it) and we will help you with this program. LCCOA, RFCC and WCSC have outreach caseworkers who provide Options counseling, Medicare counseling, information and assistance to anyone who is 60 or older and persons with disabilities. The caseworkers are Certified Information and Referral Specialists for Aging (CIRS-A) and Senior Health Insurance Program volunteer counselors. They receive training on a variety of programs and network with several
agencies in order to be informed of the options available to their clients. WCSC also offers a monthly Medicare Information class. In order for our caseworkers to best assess your needs, ask what to bring when making your appointment or bring all of the following information: proof of all income for this year (Social Security benefits, pensions, interest, wages, any other income), Medicare card, Medicare Part D card, Medicaid card, value of all assets (bank accounts, CDs, any investments, investment property, business assets, cash value of life insurance, car, house, prepaid burial, burial plots, etc.), proof of income for 2012 (even if you do not file income taxes, we will need tax documents for Social Security benefits (SSA1099), pension (1099-R), interest (1099-INT), dividends (1099-DIV), and wages (W-2, etc.), Social Security cards, and a list of current medications (including 30-day quantity and dosage). You should call ahead for an appointment.
Home visits can be provided to clients who are homebound. Caseworkers also travel to several locations each month in both Lee and Whiteside counties (see below). Some assistance programs may be seasonal, may have deadlines, time frames, or may require renewal. This month’s reminder: File for the Benefits Access Program to get a $75 license plate discount. One of my New Year’s resolutions is to make the “insert� button on my keyboard work – it doesn’t toggle for me from insert to overwrite. It always inserts. Happy New Year. I hope you all had a magical Christmas season. We begin the new year here in our kitchen knowing we have had some prayers answered this past year, and we are thankful. We have also lost some we will hold in our hearts forever. We continue to do our best for you, by providing a good meal at a modest cost. With the help of the Sauk Valley Food Bank and the Salvation Army we will strive to do just that this next year. We are seeing some new faces in the dining room and hope to see more. Anyone with an appetite is welcome to come and eat in our
dining room. We have had several of our local law enforcement officers come and join us and visit with us. When you support us here for lunch you are helping with a wide range of things our center provides for our community. We have so many things going on here, we ourselves find it hard to keep track at times. We have some of the most dedicated volunteers in the area, and could use a few more in the facility. So come on by, have lunch with us, and see what we are all about. You might be surprised. As always God Bless you this new year and thank you!

AARP tax aides to prepare returns for free AARP tax aides will be preparing 2013 tax returns again this year for low and middleincome taxpayers at the Lee County Council on Aging and the Whiteside County Senior Center. It is not necessary to be a member of AARP or of a particular age to participate in this program. For tax assistance at Lee County Council on Aging/Dixon Senior Center you may schedule an appointment by stopping in at 100 W. Second St., Dixon and

picking up an information packet. The receptionist will then schedule your appointment. No appointments will be taken over the phone until you have picked up your information packet. Appointments will be scheduled at noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays starting Jan. 30 and ending April 10. For assistance at the Whiteside County Senior Center, 1207 W. Ninth St., Sterling please call 815-622-9230.

Ogle County public transportation drivers will attend an 8 hour training that is taught by the Rural Technical Assistance Center. The three major trainings include: Defensive Driving, Emergency Procedures, and Passenger Assistance. In addition, drivers endure additional trainings such as winter driving
skills to make sure that all vehicles on the road are as safe as possible. It is our goal to ensure that our passengers are safe.
