Spreading Goodwill ‘Let’s Go to Work’ program builds skills in workplace with disabled BY KIMBERLY WATLEY For Sauk Valley Media
STERLING – Giving back to the communities it serves has been the secret for success for Goodwill since 1895, when the Rev. Edgar Helms founded Morgan Memorial Goodwill Industries. Much has changed over the years, though one thing remains the same: Changes always reflect the needs of local people, said Sterling store manager Jaclyn Wooden. The store is packed with merchandise, from clothing to housewares, which are the top two sellers. Donations are sold at affordable prices. The money received from purchases goes toward programs that assist people in need. The only items not accepted are televisions and car seats. Wooden said nothing goes to waste. Though Goodwill prefers the “best of the best,� donations sometimes come with rips or stains. Even those items are put to use. “We don’t throw away any clothes,� she said. “They go back to the warehouse, and sometimes different countries will purchase them, or people purchase them for rags and what have you.� All stock is on a 5-week rotation. Things that don’t sell after they are marked as low as 50 percent off are sold to other Goodwill stores. That way, Wooden said, they constantly have new things available for shoppers. Sterling has been fortunate to receive enough stock in community donations to keep the store full in recent
years. “We try to salvage everything, including broken electronics that come through,� she explained. “If they can’t be repaired, they are sent to a recycling center.� Goodwill stores are “so much more� than a place to discard items no longer needed, or a place to pick up a good deal on something – new to you, she said. The money earned through sales of donations goes toward various programs. Classes locally are based on need. Its primary focus, “Let’s Go to Work,� is one of its fastest-growing programs. It offers job training to the disabled. The Sterling store now has six employees. They are taught skills needed to find jobs and become more independent. Some workers, like Haley Paone, 19, end up being hired on full-time by Goodwill. Paone said the program means a lot to her. She said she had been diagnosed with a form of autism, known as pervasive developmental disorder, and bipolar disorder. “They trained me how to cope in the workforce,� she said. “This is the first time I have been stable in a job.� Aside from teaching her basic job skills, she said, the program showed her she can have a bright future and live out her dream to become an investigator for a social services agency. Her rough past, losing her 3-year-old brother and fighting her disorders, caused her to think a future might not be possible. Her job coach
at Goodwill helped her not to simply land a job, but to believe in herself. “I love working here,â€? she said, “and I would like to thank them for giving me a second chance.â€? Wooden said everyone benefits. “Participants who may have a disability, do everything alongside of us, and are paid as much as us,â€? she said. “They really love it.â€? “Attire for Hireâ€? is another program offered locally. “We help them with whatever the job would require,â€? Wooden said. “If someone needs clothes for an interview, or they needed two pairs of jeans and two shirts, coveralls, a business suit, whatever, we will get them.â€? The program has no official qualifications. “If there is a need, we are here to help them,â€? Wooden said. “Come in and talk to us.â€? Other classes and programs offered include a GED course, rĂŠsumĂŠ writing with access to computers, skills assessments, career counseling, help with interviewing skills, and placement services. During tax season, Goodwill also offers free tax preparation in the store. Wooden said education and employment are the main focuses of Goodwill, because with one comes the other. “Finding jobs right now, with the economy, it’s hard,â€? she said. “We want to help them get out and on their feet. Locally, that I think is the biggest need.â€?

Sentence a ‘slap on the wrist’? Baby sitter gets probation for brain injuries to baby BY CHRISTI WARREN
STERLING – A plea agreement Friday led to a baby sitter getting 30 months’ probation for seriously injuring an infant by shaking her – a penalty the judge acknowledged could be seen as a “slap on the wrist.� Karyn McCallister, 42, of Sterling, pleaded guilty to reckless conduct in the 5-year-old case. That charge was one of two counts that had been filed against her by the state. “I have this feeling that the public thinks that probation is, for lack of a better term, a slap on the wrist, that a more appropriate sentence is a sentence to the department of corrections,� Judge John Hauptman said.
In accepting the proposed plea deal negotiated by the state’s attorney and the defendant, Judge Hauptman said that the sentence should serve as a wake-up call. Before handing down the sentence, the judge allowed Ann and Jacob Brandt, the parents of the now 5-year-old victim, to explain to the court just how McCallister’s actions had affected their family. “Her walking away with just the 30 months, the judge even said it, it seems like a slap on the wrist,� Ann said after the hearing. “But knowing that she won’t ever be able to watch kids again, and that she has the felony conviction, it helps.� The Brandts were told about the plea deal in advance of Monday’s hearing, and were joined by a large support group of friends and family. Their church congregation entirely filled the hard, wooden benches behind them. As part of the terms of her sentence, McCallister may no

ing the child, suspected the Brandts of abuse. Doctors found three subdural hematomas – clotted blood – in Alayna’s brain. Two were old, but one was fresh. “We spent 6 full days in that hospital with my daughter almost dying because of you,� Jacob said, looking at McCallister as he spoke. “We all knew there was a good chance she wouldn’t make it through surgery,� Ann said. “She is an angel, a miracle, that’s for sure.� They spoke of the toll the experience took on them, on their relationships and their marriage. They talked about how they have had to deal with the anger, how the experience has made them hyper-concerned about their children’s safety, how they’re overprotective now. And how, someday, they’re going to have to face the terrifying task of explaining to their daughter the surgery scars on her body.

McCallister, though she confessed in February 2009, wasn’t indicted until the following December on charges of aggravated battery of a child and reckless conduct. “I can’t begin to imagine what this child’s family has gone through over the last 5 years,� Judge Hauptman said. “I cannot fathom the trauma that you have experienced over this period of time.� Given the chance to address the court, the Brandts rose, one after the other, from their seats
in the front row of the courtroom to describe the anxiety, anger and terror that they had experienced: a 6-day experience in a Peoria hospital during the winter of 2009, not knowing whether their daughter, Alayna, would survive the brain injuries McCallister had caused at her unlicensed daycare. “I watched as my daughter’s heart rate would slow,� Jacob said. “You could see the life leaving her body.� During their first few days at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, the Brandts went through round after round of questioning from police officers and doctors who, until McCallister confessed to shak-

State to drivers: Stay off your cell Local police say they’ll be lenient with ban at first BY CHRISTI WARREN
STERLING – Police agencies in the Sauk Valley will, for the most part, take it slow when it come to ticketing drivers after the cellphone ban takes effect Jan. 1. No formal grace period
has been declared by any local agency. Police chiefs from Dixon, Rock Falls and Sterling, and a lieutenant with the state police, all agreed that, while deciding whether to ticket a driver is always up to the officer at the scene, police are likely to be a little more lenient while residents get used to the cellphone ban. “Officers usually consider the totality of the circumstances involved in the traffic stop,� state police Lt. John Biffany
said. “What were the conditions of the roadway at the time. Are you in a school zone? Are you in a construction zone?� The new law will prohibit the use of handheld devices while driving, which, the Sterling Police Department noted in a news release, makes hands-free devices excellent holiday gifts. “In 2011, 3,331 motorists were killed nationwide due to traffic crashes involving dis-
tracted drivers,� Biffany said. “So the big difference between this and the enforcement of other traffic laws is that this is a known cause of crashes.� The potential fine for violating the law the first time will be $75, police say, and as much as $150 for any subsequent violations. Since 2010, Illinois drivers have been prohibited from using cell phones in construction and school zones.

DIXON – Don Knight, a rural Dixon resident, says he tried to help an apparently injured deer avoid a collision with a car. When the Illinois Department of Natural Resources was called, it had another solution: kill the animal. Late Friday morning, Knight, a Vietnam veteran who owns an electrical contracting business, said he was driving on the state Route 2 access road near Schmitt Plumbing & Heating when the small buck walked up within 10 feet of his truck. The deer’s left antler was broken off, and his left eye was damaged. “After standing there for about 10 minutes and talking to the deer,
he started to walk up to me,� Knight wrote in a letter to Sauk Valley Media. “I could tell he had been hit by a car and didn’t know where he was.� He was able to get ahold of the animal. “I wanted to keep him from crossing the main highway and getting killed by a car,� he said. “I worked with the deer for about 1 1/2 hours.� A DNR employee told Knight that the deer was sick and needed to be killed, Knight said. A conservation officer later shot the deer, state police said. It happened near Schmitt Plumbing and Sauk Valley Baptist Church. Tim Schweizer, a DNR spokesman, said he didn’t know about the local incident, but he said the agency often kills seriously injured deer.

Snow might mean a tow Towns deal with parking violators BY DAVID GIULIANI
DIXON – The Dixon Police Department has been issuing warnings to violators of the city’s parking ordinance during snowstorms. Now, it plans to tow cars. The city has a similar parking ordinance to
those in Rock Falls and Sterling. After 2 inches of snow or more falls, Dixon’s odd-even rules enact. For instance, on an oddnumbered day, people should park on the odd side of the street, so a plow can clear snow on the even side. The rules continue until a whole block has been taken care of. In a news release this week, the Dixon Police Department said that, as of Thursday, it would no
longer issue warnings for parking violators this season. “Moving forward, vehicles that are in violation will be towed pursuant to the ordinance‌,â€? the release said. “If we all work together, this can go very smoothly.â€? Lt. Brad Sibley said about 30 cars that were in the way of plows Monday had moved by Thursday. “There was some doorknocking, some warnings
issued,� he said. “The last thing we want to do is get people’s cars towed. It’s hard to get people to remember [the oddeven rules]. We try to be lenient.� In downtown, where an ordinance bars overnight parking, the police had eight cars towed after the last two snowstorms, Sibley said. The police, he said, have been charging the owners the costs of towing, not the $75 tickets

And the police have the bars tell them which cars will remain when customers are too drunk to drive, he said. “We don’t want drunk drivers,� the chief said. Sterling police Lt. Tim Morgan said he doesn’t recall his department having to tow cars during snow emergencies. “It’s a very last-resort tactic,� he said.

Reversal on cancellations gets mixed response RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – A month after President Barack Obama announced people could keep insurance policies slated for cancellation under the federal health overhaul, the reversal has gotten a mixed response from insurers, state regulators and consumers. Many consumers complained in October and November after insurers notified them that their individual policies were being canceled because they did not cover preexisting conditions, hospitalization, prescription drugs or seven other requred basic benefits. In pitching the overhaul, Obama long promised that people who liked their

Twenty are not participating. In North Carolina, only Blue Cross and Blue Shield, which controls about 80 percent of the state’s market for individual and small-business policies, offered to renew plans covering 474,000 people that had been slated for cancellation. North Carolina’s insurance commissioner allowed the company
to raise premiums by between 16 percent and 24 percent. Prices on non-compliant policies are rising in other states, as well. Anthem Blue Cross in Maine plans to raise premiums by an average of 12 percent on its no-longer-canceled policies. The Blue Cross provider in neighboring New Hampshire expects an average 7 percent increase, an amount that is in line with previous years’ premium increases. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois said it would seek undefined price changes.

Eve after an unspecified malfunction of a tea cup ride in the indoor amusement park. The amusement park that’s about 80 miles southwest of Chicago has about 10 rides. Hook says the amusement park remains open Wednesday, although the tea cup ride is closed so state inspectors and the fire marshal can try to figure out what went wrong.

MINNEAPOLIS – Thirty pounds of potatoes. Three pounds of butter. Six cups of heavy cream. Ten pounds of flour. The Lefse Institute was open. Rebecca Jorgenson Sundquist slipped a pastry sleeve over a ridged rolling pin. Four griddles were heating up. Pastry boards were covered and sprinkled in flour. Chilled dough awaited on the porch. She was ready. With ample kitchen space and enthusiasm for heritage, Sundquist offered her 13-foot counter for lefse making. The other church ladies of Central Lutheran of Minneapolis were ready, too (well, five of them, including me), aprons in place, in high spirits for their second year of marathon cooking. In 6 hours, we would produce 360 pieces of lefse before collapsing, covered in a dusting of flour. The lacy flatbread would be sold at a holiday bake sale, with proceeds to be donated. Like tortillas, injera or naan, lefse is a specialty flatbread made of an ingredient always at hand – in this case, potatoes. In communities with Scandinavian heritage, it turns up on dinner tables from Thanksgiving to New Year’s, a kind of holiday version of the Parker House roll. Spread a little butter on the surface, sprinkle it with sugar (white, brown or blended with cinnamon), and roll it up. Then listen for the sigh that follows with the first bite. There are variations, of course – there always are in the kitchen – since recipes differ from cook to cook, depending on what region your ancestors come from and who happens to pass along a recipe. Sundquist works with
a version from Beatrice Ojakangas, the cookbook author from Duluth, Minn., who is of Finnish heritage. It starts with a really good batch of mashed potatoes (that’s where the butter and heavy cream come in) with a bit of sugar and plenty of flour. What could possibly be better than that? Well, there was discussion on one option: adding bacon to lefse. We never really got to the nitty gritty – would that be bacon grease or bacon bits? – before we laughed off the idea.
Plan Ahead The effort starts the night before when the potatoes are prepared: peeled, boiled and drained, as you would for mashed potatoes. Then they are put through the potato ricer, a sieve-like contraption similar to a garlic press or food mill, that pushes the potatoes through tiny holes into rice-like bits, before they will be gently mashed. It’s a terrific way to make mashed potatoes anytime, but for lefse, where you don’t want any lingering chunks of potato, it’s almost a necessity. Almost is the operative word, as one of our cooks prepared her mashed potatoes without ricing them. “I couldn’t find my ricer,� she pleaded (nameless here to protect her lefse reputation). Those who had used ricers for their dough were unforgiving. “There are lumps in her lefse,� a few muttered, perhaps more times than were necessary. Preparation continues After refrigerating the mashed potatoes overnight, there is no turning back the next day once the flour is added (as with baking, the amount will depend on the humidity in the air
and the moisture in the ingredients). By now it’s real dough, not simply mashed potatoes, and it’s gently shaped into golf ballsized spheres that are soft and supple. We keep them chilled until ready for the griddle. Each ball of dough is rolled as thin as possible and shaped into a circle. Woe to the lefse maker who isn’t attentive. “Oh, please, that looks like the Taj Mahal,� noted one cook to another. A wooden lifter – a thin, long spatula-like device with a colorful handle – transfers the lefse round from counter to griddle. There the lefse will bubble up, much as a pancake does, while the bottom browns. Then it’s flipped to finish on the other side, and set aside to cool. For Sundquist, her love of lefse connects her to the past. “It’s all about our heritage. I learned how from my parents. It evokes so many happy memories. I want to pass this on to my children and grandchildren.� The rolling pins squeak as we prepare one round after another. Griddles overheat after hours at 500 degrees, and a fifth blows a fuse. (Note to host: You need a lefse circuit.) Our backs ache and our clothes smell of eau de potato when we realize there are another 10 pounds of dough in the refrigerator. “Time to open the wine,� said Sundquist, before we tackled the remaining 120 pieces of lefse. Last year Becky Forsberg had been a newcomer, a non-Norwegian who married into lefse (never mind that she’s Swedish and Finnish). “Lefse will change your life,� Sundquist told her at the time. “So, did it?� we asked this year. She just smiled.
