Editor's Note he Fox River has easily become one of my favorite aspects of living in St. Charles. I use the Fox River Trail mainly for walking and catching up with friends, although I’ve occasionally done some biking, too. Spotting wildlife in and around the water (see my photo!) sparks the delight I experienced when I first saw the river just a few years ago.

Shaw Media’s annual Fox River Trail Guide is one of my favorite projects. Highlighting the amazing restaurants, wildlife, activities and opportunities in Kane and Kendall counties only makes me want to explore more. Whether you’re new to the area or a longtime resident, I hope you enjoy this year’s guide. Thank you for reading!

atural wonders, wildlife and outdoor adventures aren’t the only amenities the Fox River has to offer. There are almost too many galleries and art festivals to count, and the valley is also host to many permanent and exhibition works of art. Here’s just a glimpse of where you can see and purchase art. n The River Corridor Foundation of St. Charles’ “Sculptures on the Fox” brings world-class art installations to the riverfront. Works include “If I Could But Fly,” “Wind Emotions” and “Reflections.”
n Mt. St. Mary Park, in St. Charles, hosts its annual “Sculpture in the Park” series that features original sculptures. There are 12 permanent sculptures
year-round, with additional temporary works added every year and shown May through September.
n Geneva Center for the Arts will feature several exhibits throughout the summer, including “American Roulette,” “Modality” and “Say It Out Loud.”
n The Fox River Arts Ramble is a collaborative effort that features the works of many local artists. This year’s event, scheduled for June 11, includes primary hosting locations Fine Line Creative Arts Center, Geneva Center for the Arts, Water Street Studios and the St. Charles Arts Council. Maps of all participating artists’ locations will be available.
n The Geneva Chamber of Commerce hosts the Geneva Arts Fair, scheduled this year for July 23-24. This is the perfect excuse for a stroll through beautiful art and to enjoy the shopping and dining district.
n The two-day, free Algonquin festival Art on the Fox is scheduled for September, featuring 75 juried artists. The festival will feature ceramics, glass, paintings, sculptures, jewelry and more, according to the website, as well as live music and activities. n Take a class in music or art at the Fox River Academy of Music & Art in Oswego. The academy offers plenty of options for kids.

fter spending so much time inside during the winter, we miss being outside and exploring open spaces. It’s a great way to exercise and has so many mental and physical benefits. Treat yourself to a weekend away in the outdoors this year. We’ve made it easy! The planning and researching are already done — keep reading to discover your escape into nature. The portion of the Fox River Trail that runs through the Elgin area is full of things to do. It runs beside the scenic Fox River, alongside historic railroad lines, crossing six bridges and passing through nature preserves and charming
into Nature towns. Riders can park for free and get on the trail in many locations including downtown Elgin by Festival Park or Gail Borden Public Library, South Elgin by the new Panton Mill Park or East Dundee’s Depot. If you would like to rent a bicycle, we recommend Main Street Bicycles in Carpentersville.
The Fox River Trail is also very popular for kayaking and canoeing, especially during the summer. We recommend renting equipment through Kayak Myak. For the sportier visitor, you’ll want to know about all first-rate public fishing spots situated along the Fox River, which is popular for catching bass, catfish and walleye. Recumbent tricycles provide an accessible, fun way to get exercise By Hannah Hoffmeister
C
yclists who are looking for an increasingly popular, comfortable and safe method of hitting the trails should look no further than recumbent trikes. Sold for decades with two wheels, trikes are now the far more popular

option, says Duane Oltz, a technician and salesperson who does “a little bit of everything” at the family-owned Campton Hills shop The Bike Rack. The trikes come in two main styles: delta, with two wheels in back and one in the front, and tadpole, one wheel in back and two in the front.
Visit the Campton Hills store to learn more and test-ride a bike! Many can fit without adjustment in the back of a hatchback vehicle, Oltz adds.
The three wheels of a recumbent trike “eliminate balance issues,” says Oltz. With the addition of flags or blinking lights and a better line of sight than a traditional bike (given that the seat is more like a chair), the recumbent bike is a comfortable and safe option.
The Bike Rack also works on many adaptive trikes, constructed to fit the specific needs of a person with a disability. For example, adjustments can be made to specific sides of a trike for someone whose mobility has been impacted from a stroke. Handcycles, bikes powered by your arms, are also available.

“We’ve done some incredible things” when it comes to building adaptive bikes, says Oltz. These individualized bikes are developed by Creative Mobility, which is under the same roof as The Bike Rack. Project Mobility, which directs people to funding sources, completes the trio. Creative Mobility has now reached veterans, children’s groups, hospitals and nonprofits in other states, but it all started for one recipient. Hal and Julie Honeyman, part of the family who owns the shop, have triplets, one of whom has cerebral palsy. “They wanted to find (Jacob) a way to ride with the family,” says Oltz. Whether you’re looking to purchase a recumbent trike, a traditional bike or one with adaptations, the first step is to take it for a spin. Test rides are available through The Bike Rack; Oltz recommends trying at least two before making your decision. Making the switch to a recumbent trike is a positive one for many cyclists. Says Oltz of the people who choose a recumbent: “They find that they ride more than they ever did.”

The series, “A River Flows Through It: Life in the Fox River Valley,” focuses on the health benefits, wildlife, activities and preservation of the river. It’s sponsored by the River Corridor Foundation of St. Charles in partnership with The Conservation Foundation and St. Charles Park District.
The series actually launched in 2020, says Laurel Moad, River Corridor Foundation board secretary. “We did one or two live lectures, then COVID hit, and we went virtual. We took a hiatus the last couple of years due to COVID, then decided to relaunch. It was important to us that the program be free, that we provide an opportunity for people in the Valley to
have something to do that is educational and entertaining, and in particular, to gain perhaps another perspective on the river’s valuable assets.” January’s lecture, “Nature RX: Nature for Your Wellbeing,” by Jan Roehll of The Conservation Foundation, “focused on the health benefits of just getting outside,

walking and taking in nature and having that quiet time to enjoy the elements, if you will,” says Moad.

April’s exciting lecture, “Fox River Raptors: Owls, Hawks and More… LIVE!” by Candace Ridlbauer of the Northern Illinois Raptor Rehab & Education, featured more than a dozen tables devoted to
The lecture included data on the health benefits achieved from communing with nature, and its effects on blood pressure, anxiety and coping mechanisms. “Just get out and walk,” says Moad. “You don’t have to be a runner, cyclist or kayaker to experience the benefits of the outdoors.”

raptors, including, in addition to live animals, models of wingspans and other information, highlighted by Ridlbauer’s lecture on the life of a raptor. “The Fox Valley has huge populations of raptors,” notes Moad. You can still catch the last in this year’s series. Lecture No. 5, “Your Legacy on the Fox River, Actions for Today & Tomorrow,” by Brook McDonald, president and CEO of The Conservation Foundation, is scheduled for 7-8 p.m. May 11 at Baker Community Center in St. Charles. Register at
www.theconservationfoundation.org. McDonald will focus on what residents can do to protect and preserve the river. “He will talk about things like using less road salt in winter, planting native plants and creating rain gardens,” says Moad.
Plans are already in the works to continue the series in 2023. Feedback and ideas solicited from the public at the lectures will go into the project. “We’ll see what we learn,” says Moad. “It’s been so popular — why wouldn’t we do it again?”

W
hen you hear about electric bicycles, or e-bikes, visions of motorcycles or mopeds might come to mind. But Steve Boje, owner of BOJ-E-BIKES in Batavia, stresses they’re just like regular bikes with the addition of a motor, battery and display panel. “E-bikes can help make a ride easier if, say, you’re going up a hill so you won’t be so out of breath,” Boje says. Another misconception is there isn’t any pedaling involved, but Boje says riders still pedal 100% of the time.
“The power level of the bike is adjustable. When the power is set to zero, you ride it like a regular bike. Or you can turn it on just for a little help going up hills,” Boje explains.

I joyfully respond, “Of course it is, and the best part is, it is enjoyable at the same time.” Electric bikes are this century’s newest addition to the cycling industry — and what a fabulous addition it has been. No matter whom you talk to, electric bikes are most often described as “F-U-N,” especially if you self-identify as a baby boomer. E-bikes have multiple levels of assistance, ranging from a gentle push to a hearty shove, so the amount of effort you put into your ride will depend on which you choose. You can boost your confidence with the option of riding faster to keep up with your best friend, or longer to reach the next town for lunch along the trail. Electric bikes can take you on routes that you may have avoided in the past because of hills and distance. When you take that extended ride, you are exercising longer, keeping your heart rate where you want it, and even enjoying it more. foremost expert on gravel riding” in the area, placed 48th out of 111 in the men’s category. The course is “a road race with gravel sections,” according to All Spoked Up’s Facebook.
“Gravel is what we’re best known for,” says owner Matt Knowles. His Aurora shop specializes in gravel bikes and equipment and even supports riders who race under All Spoked Up’s name. Knowles says the shop’s slogan is “All Spoked Up is the gateway to gravel.”

Gravel bikes are similar to standard road bikes, except that they have the ability to have much wider tires, which better accommodate rough terrain. Knowles says business for gravel riding-related items has increased significantly in the shop, particularly in the last three years.
For those who are curious about gravel riding, consider doing one of the shop’s seasonal challenges, which vary by length and road surfaces based on time of year. Information about registration is available on social media, and the challenge isn’t a one-day thing — you have a month to complete it. It’s “more about the experience than it is about winning the race,” says Knowles, who estimates

YAK SHACK
Find more than a rousing game of putt-putt with boating rentals available at the park district location from May 8 through mid-August. Rent a kayak or pedal boat by the hour, including life jackets and paddles. Kayaks launch from the dock in Pottawatomie Park. Rentals must be made in person, but you can check online for details ahead of time.
In additional to rentals and trips, Yak Shack offers classes and an online retail store. The classes, which build on each other, include an introduction to kayaking that takes participants all the way up to instruction in whitewater kayaking. You can rent canoes, kayaks, tube trackers and more for trips. Advance reservations by phone are recommended.

s warmer weather beckons, enjoying music and a glass of wine in a communal setting near a body of water sounds, well, blissful.
Kendall County residents and visitors, along with Fox River Trail trekkers, would seem to agree, especially when it comes to Fox Valley Winery’s new downtown Oswego location.
“We’re seeing such a big jump in business since being back in downtown,” winery owner Mike Faltz says. “It’s been a great move. A lot of walking traffic. All of the local businesses downtown have been very helpful in cross-promoting, and everybody has been great being downtown.”

Situated at 5600 Route 34 for almost 18 years, the winery established many loyal customers. To hear Laura Meindel of Oswego tell it, the move to 59 Main St. didn’t faze that base. A monthly visitor with her husband, Kyle, as well as her parents, Meindel describes a bustling scene in her winter trips to the winery. “It’s always crowded,” she says. “There’s always people there.
“They definitely have a nice variety and they always are introducing a new wine … or an old wine that has been discontinued, they’ll bring it back.” Faltz and Co. have faced a welcome problem as they observe a boom in business and anticipate additional customer interest in the spring and summer. The uncertainty swirling around the onset of the pandemic meant low production of wines of 2020 vintage.

That has triggered an uptick in workload to boost the current inventory. Faltz greets the challenge with optimism. “We’re heading for spring,” he says. At press time, Faltz was awaiting approval from the village to adjust an outdoor seating plan that would expand a side patio down an adjacent alley. Under that arrangement, the winery could accommodate approximately 100 patrons outside to go with 70 inside. Faltz adds winery brass still was determining whether to develop an outdoor stage for spring and summer musical guests or use the existing, indoor stage, then opening the doors to capitalize on exceptional building acoustics.

Ever the neighbor, Faltz touts another benefit for musical and nonmusical nights alike: Oswego Brewing Company and the winery are adjacent. “You’ve got a winery and a brewery in the same building,” Faltz says. “So, one parking spot, you can hit two different places.”
Musician Jake Mack of Aurora, a veteran of gigs at both the Route 34 and Main Street locations, is eager to see what new energy patrons bring to spring and summer sets.
“It’s conveniently located. It’s right on the river. It’s a nice looking location, too,” Mack says. “When you get inside, it’s nice and open and welcoming and not too huge and kind of has a contemporary feel to it, too, which I really dig.” He’s not the only one.
