Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center is much more than a gym. The facility, part of the Glen Ellyn Park District, has become a bustling hub in the community. It offers a variety of amenities, fitness classes, personal training, community programs, and diet and nutrition counseling. The center has become an important part of the village.

cardioboxing, spin, Zumba, tabata and much more. There also are classes specifically designed for older adults, such as Silver Sneakers and Silver Sneakers Yoga. Classes are free for members and non-members, can purchase one-day passes.

“Class participation has definitely grown over time, there’s been a very positive response,” says Clark. “We have an average of more than 800 participants a week in all of our classes.”

A popular option is the Les Mills BODYPUMPTM class. The group barbell class focuses on using light to moderate weights with lots of repetition.

The goal is to strengthen the entire body and create lean, toned muscles. “It’s a unique class that not all fitness centers are allowed to conduct,” Clark says.

The center also offers plenty of kids’ fitness programs. There are a number of fun, highenergy classes for children up to age 12, 8 | OCTOBER 2016 | SUBURBAN LIFE MAGAZINE

including Zumba, Kids Fitness Boot Camp, Pee Wee Tennis, Little Gymsters, and more. Kids and parents can workout together in classes like Adult & Tot Soccer, Sports ‘N’ Stories, and Adult and Tot Olympics.

“Our programs were growing, and previously we didn’t have anywhere to house them,” says Clark. “So this facility was also built in order to accommodate programs for the community members and their children.”

For a more one-on-one experience, visitors can choose from several personal training packages. Certified personal trainers will create a customized training plan of 30-minute or onehour sessions. All clients receive a free fitness evaluation that includes a body fat analysis, cardiovascular endurance test and flexibility analysis.

Even with the wide range of amenities and classes, Ackerman remains an affordable option for community members. Membership rates start at $30 per month, for an individual resident, with discounts for seniors and students. A family membership for up to six people at the same household is $60 per month. Members also receive up to two hours of free childcare per day at the facility.

The fitness center also is home to many of the Glen Ellyn Park District’s programs. The park district offers athletic programs for all ages throughout the community. Many take place on the Ackerman turf field or basketball courts, such as soccer, T-ball training, field hockey, lacrosse, basketball and shooting camps.

“Some of the other fitness centers in the area can be $50 to $100 a month and not everyone can afford that,” says Clark. “We’re a very economical choice.”

MUSEUM PROJECT GIVES VOICE TO LOCAL HISTORY

Ashley Downing loves hearing the old stories.

She only wishes there were more of them.

assembling the local historian coalition to move it from concept to reality.

And in her role as curator at Wheaton’s DuPage County Historical Museum, Downing hopes to get a front row seat for many more, as one of those helping to lead and shape the Voices of DuPage history project.

“In recent years, there has been a push to collect oral histories and for museums to be more inclusive,” says Failing. “This project allows us to reach all segments of our communities and share and preserve many stories.”

“There have been some amazing comments made by various participants that I wouldn’t have known about,” says Downing. “I’m a little young for the Civil Rights Era, for instance, and the stories people have, it seems so completely foreign compared to today.

While working together under the same Voices umbrella, and in pursuit of a general common theme at certain times, each participating organization has freedom to select and collect “what fits in with their current work,” Failing says.

“And it is unbelievable.”

Downing says there is no screening process, and the Voices volunteers will meet with whoever wishes to share their stories. The recording process, which typically lasts about 30 minutes, is “non-invasive,” with interview subjects free to share as much as they like. Interviewers may also ask a few questions.

Originally created as part of a project known as “Recovering our Roots,” the Voices of DuPage project grew out of a desire to keep alive not just the history and accounts of DuPage County’s past, but hopefully the stories as told in the actual voices, and through the eyes, of those who lived it.

Downing says the topic ties in with a traveling exhibit, titled “Changing America,” scheduled to make a stop soon at the DuPage County Historical Museum. She says the local museums are working to collect local stories that might help bring the past to life, to offer a local glimpse into a movement that reshaped the nation.

“We want to capture all of the stories of the time, from those who were heavily involved to those who took more of a backseat approach,” Downing says.

Downing noted the story collectors have already collected several remarkable tales. One that stands out for her is the tale of an Asian American man who moved to the region decades ago with his family.

“The Realtors kept telling them that neighbors would be offended if they moved in, no matter what neighborhood it might be,” says Downing.

“He took the high ground in a situation that shouldn’t have even existed,” Downing says.

While the Voices project has collected some recordings, Downing and Failing says they are always seeking more, on a variety of topics. To that end, Downing noted the Voices coalition is seeking both those willing to share their stories and volunteers willing to aid in the work of locating, recording and archiving those stories.

In addition to weekly playgroups, monthly Moms’ Nights Out and family activities, Our Village Mom’s Club holds quarterly Moms on a Mission events throughout the Chicago metro area.

“On a personal level, each playgroup educates, empowers and supports mothers on important issues facing our children and our families,” Lehman says.

Lehman took her first FIT4MOM class in Chicago as her maternity leave ended and she was going back to work on a Monday four years ago.

“I tried the class and I got hooked,” she remembered. “For me, class was extremely challenging but the instructor was so encouraging. I had a small baby at home but I was motivated that I did it.”

Supporters and survivors step up for breast cancer awareness, research By SHONDA DUDLICEK

Helen Lutzenkirchen apologizes for becoming choked up when she talks about why she walks.

Lutzenkirchen is one of the walk’s donors, raising more than $1,000. “A lot of family got together with me for my first walk. Lutzenkirchen is one of many breast cancer survivors who will participate in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5k/3-mile Walk on Oct. 16 from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Cantigny Park in Wheaton. The walk raises funds and awareness and is the largest suburban breast cancer event with nearly 4,000 people participating. Last year the event raised more than $267,000 to fund breast cancer research, patient services, education and early detection efforts. Organizers hope to raise $300,000 this year.

Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. The program and activities begin at 7:45 a.m., including a survivors’ ceremony and photo. The walk starts at 9 a.m. Closing ceremonies are at 10:30 a.m. Parking is available at the DuPage County Government Center and shuttles bring participants to the event.

Staab says other survivors host community garage sales to bring in donations all year. “You don’t have to have large donors to get people involved,” she says. “When someone you know is undergoing cancer treatment, you want to help those loved ones or honor someone they’ve lost.

It’s a healing activity for them.”

From providing wigs to support, the American Cancer Society is there for people when they are at their lowest, Staab says. “Many participants have reached out to us and make sure that those resources are out there for people who need them.”

Lutzenkirchen agrees. “For my first walk I was in a wig from the American Cancer Society. I used to have really long hair to my butt and I got a great wig. Staab says the first group encompassed one- to five-year survivors, “a reflection piece on where they’re at.” The next group was five- to sevenyear survivors, looking at when they were first diagnosed. And then all the way up to 20-plus year survivors. “They still participate and it’s such an inspiration. They celebrate survivorship.

For those who are newly diagnosed or still struggle, this is a reminder of that celebration,” Staab says, adding that all survivors receive a medal.

Survivors’ and caregivers’ tents are staffed with volunteers to greet participants. “What makes this walk special is it’s not only a survivors’ recognition, but it’s the largest suburban event and has the power and energy of a big-city event but a community feel in the way everyone comes together for a friendly cause. And it has the beautiful backdrop of Cantigny. At the heart of all of it is the mission, making the greatest difference for those undergoing treatment,” Staab says.

Lutzenkirchen recalled her first walk and says her husband was not able to walk with her, but he worked up to it and now he can. “I feel excited to be at the walk because so many people are on the same page. You see so many survivors, so much pink boas, T-shirts. And those who didn’t make it, the families are still there to carry on for them.�

Explaining dementia to children D

ementia is a troubling, often misunderstood, condition. While many people believe dementia is a disease, the Alzheimer’s Association defines dementia as “a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life.”

The association estimates that Alzheimer’s Disease accounts for well over half of dementia diagnoses.

Given the confusion among adults about exactly what dementia is, it’s probably not surprising that children need better information about the condition and its effects on their senior loved ones.

START THE CONVERSATION As with any conversation between an adult and child, it’s critical to use age-appropriate language when discussing dementia. For a young child, you might be able to say something as simple as, “Grammy doesn’t remember things as well as she used to. We all need to help her remember our names, and we still need to give her lots of hugs and kisses.” Explaining dementia to an older child might involve discussions about how the brain works and changes with age and could include conversations centered on books, photos and videos.

DISCUSS NEW BEHAVIOR You’ll need to explain the changes in your senior’s actions. Some of the behavior you might have to address include: ¢ REPETITION It’s not unusual for loved ones to repeat questions. Let your know child know this could be due to anxiety, boredom or memory loss. ¢ RESTLESSNESS Actions such as fidgeting, pacing and shouting could be triggered by anger, discomfort, boredom or stress. ¢ SUNDOWNING Since dementia might disrupt a person’s body clock, Grandma or Grandpa could be unable to sleep through the night. When this happens, he or she might call out to, or seek out family members. ¢ DISTRUST As memory fails, senior loved ones might lose, hide or forget where they put things. This could lead to suspicion about family members stealing from – or even plotting against – them.

LIFE CYCLE Glen Ellyn native returns home to turn passion into profession

Growing up in Glen Ellyn, he’d rove the village streets on his bike, exploring parks and trails and venturing ever further from home on two wheels. As an adult, he has hit both road and trail as a downhill mountain biker - riding circuits throughout the country.

Now, after 13 years, MacKenzie is back home, making his love of cycling his livelihood, as the owner, operator of The Bike Hub in Glen Ellyn.

The Bike Hub, located in downtown Glen Ellyn, is a shop that caters to all levels of cycling.

“Our families love coming in and enjoying the comfortable ambiance,” he says, “Our servicefriendly atmosphere allows us to cater to the average rider all day long - for the quick flat repair or the occasional quick tune from folks along the path.

But beyond the ordinary, MacKenzie adds the shop is equally well-known for its professional bike fitting.

“We have one of the highest rated professional bike fitting platforms available - Retul - which is, essentially, body to bike geometry,” he explains.

But day-to-day, his biggest cause is the business itself, and sharing his enthusiasm for the sport and lifestyle with others through his work.

“Going from ‘wrencher’ to owner has taken me many hard years of simple hard work and determination,” he says. “I take great pride in the work I put out and I hope to instill a level of quality and care that you don’t see in your average bike store.”

Ciao bella Norabella Boutique builds clientele with high fashion and helpful service

By SHERRI DAUSKURDAS Photos by ALDO RISOLVO Sharon Dotson always has loved fashion. And in a ‘boutique’ town like Glen Ellyn, she’s felt right at home.

She is the owner at Norabella Boutique, a shop she operates with her daughter Jamie Dotson at 482 N. Main Street.

From there, Sharon and Jamie have become the source of fashions from such high-end designers as Joseph Rybkoff and Dex Jeans, items regular clients wait for with anxious anticipation.

“Jamie is our stylist, and she has become a real personal shopper for some of our regular clients,” Sharon explains. “They come to us from as far as Geneva, and Oak Park for the designs we carry.”

But Jamie notes that there’s a real variety of both price and style in the shop, and shoppers should know that just because the boutique carries big name designers, doesn’t mean they cant find something fashionable for far less investment.

“Whether it is a dress for $400 or a shirt for $40, I can help you find something you’ll love, for yourself, or a gift,” Jamie says.

This season, those designs include flowing tunics with leggings and riding boots, oversized bags and totes, and plenty of plaid.

“Plaid is really hot this fall,” Jamie said, “and basic black is out. Navy is the new black for autumn, and we are seeing it in casual and more formal pieces.”

And if you need accessories, Norabella offers an immense array of custom-made pieces, designed by Sharon herself. In fact, the Norabella Boutique began as an offshoot of Sharon’s first business, Bella Bead Boutique, once housed in the Banyon Tree shopping area in Glen Ellyn.

Some folks on the Norabella client list even have been known to call when they hear a designer’s line has arrived, paying in advance for their size.

“I’ll make jewelry, custom designs, and do repair work,” Sharon explains.

The women see the studio as a natural progression for Norabella, and a complement to not only her shop, but to the growing community of fashion retail in the area.

“Glen Ellyn is becoming known to be a ‘boutique town,” Jamie says. “Women come out – girlfriends, mothers and daughters –and they make a day of it. It’s a destination.”

And the mother-daughter team takes their fashions on the road as well, hosting and participating in local events for fun and charity, inviting close friends and family to lend a hand and share in the fun.

They will be a featured participant in the Glen Ellyn Winter Showcase Fashion Show, to NAMI DuPage and the Animal Rescue Foundation “ It’s a learning experience, for sure,” Sharon says. “We have such loyal customers and I enjoy meeting all the people. hroughout her life, Patricia Francis has been called to serve those in need. It is a calling she had heard in her heart, as well as in a few phone calls and personal encounters , that has changed her career path and guided her into the lives of those in need.

“I have been willing to go where the need is,” Francis said.

One of her first callings was to enter religious life. Francis said she was a happy, high school student enjoying a busy social life and part-time afterschool work and yet she found herself searching for something more.

“I wondered if religious life might satisfy that yearning,” she said.

In her line of work, challenges and obstacles are frequent, yet King says she doesn’t let it stop her.

“When we do hit a brick wall, I look at what can we do,” King says. “So far, there’s always been something more we can do.”

The millionaire chateau owner in Margaux and the debt-ridden little winemaker from some distant corner of the appellation can both proudly say, My wine is a Bordeaux.”

One of the most important things to know about Bordeaux is that most of the wines are blends.

The reds can be blends of up to five different grape varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. There is a sixth grape varietal grown in Bordeaux, called Carmenere, but it’s only three percent of the region’s total grape crop and very rarely used in any of the blends. White Bordeaux are primarily blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Again, there is a third grape, Muscadelle, but it’s not used as often.

THE WAKEUP CALL

Deceived by their own self image, Bordeaux winemakers were slow to profit from research and new techniques that had been revolutionizing winemaking in other parts of the world. But when their wines were soundly trounced by the Americans in the 1970s, they had to adapt or perish. They chose to adapt, and the 1980s showed major improvement.

The vintage of 1982? Wonderful. The 1990s continued the trend. The 2000s? Now they’ve hit their stride. In 2000 it was good. By 2005, very good. And the 2009 was terrific.

In exotic India, the culture and the climate support an abundance of seasonal fresh vegetables. The aromatic herbs and spices used in preparing these vegetables have made Indian entrees popular all over the world.

And while many people would love to try to cook Indian food at home, the list of ingredients and complicated procedures often deters them from doing so. But it need not be that way! I will share recipes that are simple to prepare and rich in flavor.

¢ SOUTH INDIAN VEGETABLE CURRY What exactly is a “curry”?

Ask the group, and a majority of the people will say it’s a spice. But actually, curry is a sauce or gravy, and there is a vast variety of curries made with different blends of spices.

INGREDIENTS: 1 cup cauliflower florets 1 cup carrots, cut in sticks 1 cup green beans, cut in strips ½ cup green peas ½ cup potato, cut in cubes 1 cup onion, chopped 2 tablespoons ginger, chopped 2 tablespoon garlic, chopped 2 tablespoons Bombay Joe’s Fresh ground curry powder or Madras curry powder from your favorite store 2 tablespoons cilantro, chopped 1 cup coconut cream, unsweetened 1 tablespoon lemon juice Salt, to taste 2 tablespoons vegetable oil Chef Manoj “Chops” Chopra grew up in Central India, and has worked as a chef in Bagdad, Bombay and San Francisco before opening his newest restaurant, Bombay Joe’s, downtown Glen Ellyn.

As the weather cools, entertainment heats up at the McAninch Arts Center Looking for a great way to spend those long, cold winter months? A LOCAL JEWEL STONES JEWELERS TO HOST ANNUAL GEM SHOW

he colors of the autumn season delight the senses. The landscape is alive with shades of red and gold, brightest just before a blustery afternoon clears the branches and readies the ground for winter.

It is a short-lived, but beautiful time of year.

It also is time for another short-lived, but beautiful autumn event…the annual Colored Gem Show at Stones Jewelery in Wheaton, November 10,11 and 12.

Every year, the experts at Stones welcome Paul-Otto Caesar, owner of a fifth generation cutting house in Idar-Oberstein, Germany, to the shop at 107 W. Front Street.

“Paul-Otto travels the world acquiring unique gem rough that his cutters and polishers can form into beautiful gems of varied shapes and colors,” says Stones manager Brad Huiner, “he then brings his beautifully polished stones to our store and displays them in our cases for the three days of the show.”

Visitors to the event have an opportunity to purchase the loose stones, and experts at Stones will mount them into jewelry.

“We have items we have made in the past already in stock and mounted,” adds Huiner.

Custom pieces also are an option. “We have a designer as well who can help.”

Stones has been offering the gem show to the community for 24 years. Huiner says it differentiates Stones Jewelry from others, and introduces the community to a variety of stones of which they may not have been aware.

“Every year we have worked with the same cutting house, but every year the selection is a little different,” says Huiner. “He has amazing stuff!

It’s a real opportunity to make one of a kind pieces.”

Hot ticket For at least one day each year, Wheaton is the self-professed chili capital of the world.

On Saturday, Nov. 5, Wheaton will host its 8th annual Chili Cook-Off. From 1 to 5 p.m., area residents will have the opportunity to sample and then vote on the tastiest chili the community has to offer. Approximately 15 local eateries will create and serve up their very best chili to an estimated 1,000 people.

Paula Barrington, executive director of Downtown Wheaton Association, says that the popular event serves as a fundraiser for the Downtown Wheaton Association, which is responsible for marketing the downtown area as a destination for dining, shopping, entertainment and services.”

Tickets are sold online through Downtown Wheaton Association’s website, $20 for adults, $10 for children ages 12 and under. On event day,

attendees will check in at Martin Memorial Plaza to pick up the ballots, then travel from restaurant to restaurant, each of which will have a special area set up from which they’ll serve their own, distinctive chili. Each attendee gets a five-ounce bowl of chili at each restaurant.

“One year a chili had venison. We’re told that Jameson whiskey is popular in one restaurant that does an Irish spin,” Barrington says. “We have a new Thai restaurant this year that will serve chili inspired by Thai tradition.”

In addition to the popular vote, there is a separate, critics’ choice event. Three judges will blind taste all of the chilis and pick their first, second and third-place favorites. “This gives the restaurants an additional opportunity to shine,” says Barrington.

All ballots will be counted and the winners for both contests announced at an after-party at

Emmett’s Brewing Company.

Additionally, this year will feature a chili-pepper eating contest. At 5 p.m., adult contestants will eat jalapeno peppers, with the person able to down the most in one minute winning a Downtown Wheaton gift certificate. “We’ll have milk on hand for them to cool down,” Barrington says.

“A lot of people get groups together and go from restaurant to restaurant to restaurant,” she says. “It’s a great way to spend the afternoon in downtown Wheaton.”

Fashion event to showcase Glen Ellyn as ‘boutique town’ By WENDY FOSTER Some familiar area people will be strutting their stuff on Oct. 23rd. Models, including members of the Chamber of Commerce, local business owners, men/women in uniform and more, will show some swagger on-the catwalk at Glen Ellyn’s Winter Showcase Fashion Show. Held at Abbington Distinctive Banquets, the event includes a silent auction, luncheon and fabulous fashion show featuring finery from Glen Ellyn’s beautiful boutiques.

The Winter Showcase Fashion Show was initiated years ago, as a way to show off local retailers before the holiday season. “All of the clothes are from local boutiques and hair and make up are done by local salons. Models are people from the village: prominent people from downtown Glen Ellyn,” says Dawn Smith, executive director of the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce. “The Winter Showcase Fashion Show is really a showcase of downtown Glen Ellyn.”

“The Chamber is of Commerce is here to help promote traffic into our stores.

The Fashion Show allows people to see what our local retailers can do, especially for the holidays. It also shows what our salons can do with hair ad make-up,” says Smith.

Approximately one dozen boutiques and three salons will be participating.

“The Chamber always advocates for shopping local. The boutiques in Glen Ellyn have more to offer in terms of individuality and uniqueness as well as a personal touch with the clients... knowing their customers personally, and knowing what to stock that will suit them. The boutiques are in touch with their clientele. That’s very exciting to see,” says Smith. Glen Ellyn boutiques, she added, specialize in carrying items that won’t be found at national retailers.

Featured fashions will be for women, men and children.

Smith says that the event will raise funds to support National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI DuPage) and Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF).

The Winter Showcase Fashion Show continues to grow in popularity each year. “We started with one section of the banquet room at Abbington, and now we have two- thirds of the whole room. We take up more and more room each year,” Smith says. “We’ve sold 200-300 tickets already.”

“Glen Ellyn has a quaint, small town feel with boutiques, gourmet restaurants, salons and great events. We offer so much. You don’t have to travel into the city or to Naperville or Oak Brook. Everything that you want is right here in your own backyard. People should come to the Winter Showcase Fashion Show and celebrate Glen Ellyn,” says Smith.
