t’s been difficult for many of us to get into the summer spirit this year, what with the cool temperatures and continuing rainfall.

But in a flash, it’s August, and the bulk of the season is behind us, with the promise of fall just ahead.

Experts offer tips to control the chaos and reclaim your room

E

very house has at least one room that is in constant use, day in and day out. Often it’s the kitchen, but it can also be the laundry/mud room, the front door hallway or even the home office. By their very nature, these over-used spaces can be an integral part of family efficiency. The flip side – they also can contribute to both the clutter, and the chaos.

“The main purpose of being organized is so you can function, so you can find things,” said professional organizer Barbara Tischler of Wheaton.

“These areas get used a lot, on a daily basis.

You can’t just organize it and leave it alone.

If it’s an area you use all the time, you have to consistently be on top of it,” said Tischler, known to clients as “The Clutter Coach” (www.cluttercoach.com).

Before tackling an overwhelming room, or running out to buy bins and containers, Tischler said that the first step in reclaiming a room is de-cluttering it.

“First you need to go through the steps of de-cluttering… fixing up the space for things you’re going to keep there,” said Tischler.

“Measure where you plan to put your storage. Then you go out buying containers after you know exactly you need.”

Tischler added that you don’t need to spend a lot of money to get organized.

“They are things in your home you can repurpose or buy inexpensively,” she said.

Clearing out the paper on your desk will help in controlling the chaos in your home office.

Entering deadlines and notes directly into your phone, calendar or personal planner will prevent little scraps of paper from piling up on your desk, store consultants suggest.

In any room, compartmentalizing is the key to being organized. The Container Store’s staff suggests placing like items together – be they laundry products, kids’ back packs or office supplies – in order to minimize time spent searching, and allowing for productivity elsewhere.

Sorting your laundry by color as soon as you undress will help you save time when washday comes. Choose a laundry hamper with compartments; then you won’t have to dump the contents of a large hamper to find the whites once laundry day arrives.

But without the will to get it done, maintaining an organized space will always be cumbersome, Tischler says. The payoff, however, is the peace and serenity of an organized home.

“It takes the same amount of effort to put something back as it does to put it away, just in reverse,” she said. “Discipline is required but after the first clean up it’s not so difficult to maintain. If you see enough negative consequences you’ll put things away. It will become a higher priority.”

Historic downtown a destination for diners, shoppers

By Sherri Dauskurdas From its beginnings, the city of Wheaton was a place of principle.

Settled by devoted Christians, ardent abolitionists and innovative industrialists, much of Wheaton’s land was given away in its settlement years, to a budding railroad and a host of shopkeepers who were ready and willing to build in the young city.

The result was a burgeoning downtown with a strong central business district.

Today, that same spirit fills the downtown streets of Wheaton, anchored by a prestigious college campus and the ideals of the city’s founding fathers.

This walkable city center beckons residents to its streets for treats at Tate’s Ice Cream Shop, or an evening concert near the central fountain. A neighborhood filled with fabulous dining urges busy commuters to embrace the evening and remain downtown, be it for a relaxing dinner at Ivy, or a cool drink at Muldoon’s with family and friends.

“The dining has helped to make Wheaton a real destination,” says Paula Barrington, director of the Downtown Wheaton Business Association.

Wheaton’s year is filled with events and activities.

There are kite-flying festivals and culinary events, wine tastings and parades, and community

celebrations for nearly every major holiday. Fall boasts some of the finest the city has to offer, as local parks filled with the colors of autumn play perfect host the city’s residents and guests.

One of the most popular events is the weekly French Market at Main and Liberty, just south of the train station. Flowers, locally grown produce, jewelry, crafts and more are sold each Saturday morning.

“Our French Market is one of the most successful in the Chicago area,” says Barrington, “and that really speaks to our draw.”

So successful is the market that the city is considering constructing a permanent structure for the weekly event, allowing it to operate throughout more of the year without concerns for changing weather.

The historic Wheaton Theater sits in the center of the downtown neighborhood. A community campaign is underway to refurbish the gem of the 1920s, which has played host to live drama, silent films, and Vaudeville performances in addition to modern films and small concerts.

Once completed, it will remain a multi-use venue, hosting film festivals, concerts, and private events.

“I have seen things changing, and there seems to be a real need for the smaller venue, especially for concerts,” says Barrington.

This eclectic and diverse combination of historic streetscape and modern amenities continues to attract visitors and business alike. Newcomers like Bella Roba Boutique on Hill Street, Home Again Consignment on Wesley Street and Bella Flora Mia on North Main Street have brought furniture, home décor and accessories to the downtown retail scene.

Namaste Salon just has entered the Wheaton marketplace, with a space that overlooks the city’s downtown. It joins more than a dozen salons – Amore Francesca, Lotus, Marquiz, and Posh, to name a few – in this beauty-rich neighborhood.

“No one has any excuse for not looking good in Wheaton,” quips Barrington, who says she hopes to build a collection of fashion boutiques to complement the fantastic salon market in the city’s center.

But there’s an intricate balance, Barrington says, between the historic independent family businesses like Carlson’s art shops and paint stores, a family endeavor which has been in Wheaton since the 1920s, and the influx of larger chain retailers.

“There is a place for everyone, I think,” says Barrington. “It helps create a synergy that is good for the downtown. But independent businesses offer a unique value. They have products you won’t find in the strip centers or the national chains. A lot of business owners know their customers well and understand what they need.

“That experience you have, when they know you and know your family… it’s something you don’t find elsewhere,” she says.

Coffee houses are at the center of the social scene, for both visiting shoppers and college students.

“Our coffee shops have become our gathering places,” she says. “La Spiaza [on Main Street] is fun and funky, and appeals to both families and the college students, who love to get off campus once in a while.”

isitors to Cantigny now have the option of gliding through the park on a Segway. Guided tours using the personal transporters are available this season.

Two kinds of Segway experiences are available. The first is a 90-minute guided and narrated tour focusing on Cantigny’s gardens and museums. he school year is approaching with a great deal of excitement and anticipation, both for my kids and me.

This year marks a lot of changes in our school routine, mostly for my daughter. Madelyn is entering first grade, and since she only went to half-day kindergarten, this will be her first year attending school all day.

We also are changing schools, as we moved during the summer.

While I know this will be a big transition for her, I also know she will do fine, as she complained several times last year that her day at school was too short. She’s the quintessential first-born child, who embraces school and learning with zeal.

My biggest anxiety comes from the return to the morning routine, namely getting to the bus stop.

Last year was our first experience with the bus, and it quickly became my least favorite part of the day.

Initially, I was excited to go to the bus stop each morning, since I saw as it as opportunity to socialize with my neighbors. For years, I had watched the ladies from the neighborhood coffee clutch in the morning after the kids got on the bus. It seemed to be where all the important information and goings-on of the neighborhood were discussed. Once my kids started taking the bus, I would finally be “in the know,” I thought.

The first day, we allowed plenty of time for photo opportunities and the kids to show off their new clothes, shoes and backpacks.

Unfortunately, it only took a few days for us to fall into our usual morning rush, in which we ended up racing out the door to get to the bus on time.

Our biggest downfall was dragging younger brother Colin along with us. He added to the frenzy because he usually had some issue right as we walked out the door: trying to find a toy to bring with him, refusing to put on shoes or a coat ,or wanting to ride his scooter shoeless to the bus stop.

Eventually, the novelty of the bus stop wore off for him, and he opted to stay inside and watch cartoons rather than hoof it down to the corner.

Still, even after Colin eliminated himself from the equation, Madelyn and I were racing for the corner each morning. I usually ended up brushing her hair at the bus stop and once followed her up the stairs of the bus while finishing a French braid. It was common for us to get to the bus stop and realize she forgot her mittens or hat or homework from the night before.

We only missed the bus twice, and both times I was able to catch it at the other end of our block five minutes later, after it looped around our neighborhood. I thought to myself, “I would have no problem making this bus each day!”

Even with that knowledge, it only took a week into the “new” bus stop routine before we were back to racing out the door with Madelyn’s backpack half-zipped and my fresh cup of coffee splashing all over me as I hustled down the street.

So, when school starts this year, I know that no matter how early we wake up, there will seem to be never enough time to get all our stuff together and out the door. There will always be one lost glove or a show that Madelyn fixate on, preventing her from getting dressed. She always will get distracted staring at herself in the mirror instead of brushing her teeth, and I’ll always be making one last cup of coffee to bring with me, so I can drink it while socializing after the kids get on the bus.

After all, what is a good coffee clutch without the coffee?

It wasn’t until more than halfway through the school year when we arrived at the bus stop late, that I mentioned, in my defense, the bus driver had arrived early. My neighbors informed me that the pick up time was supposed to be 8:14 a.m., not 8:19 a.m. like I thought. I went back home to double check the letter I had recieved at the beginning of the school year with the bus times. Sure enough, it said 8:19, but it turns out I had been going to the wrong

Some nights it’s just her and the boys, but on the weekends they enjoy time when they can all be together at the table, or even enjoy a picnic.

If this sounds familiar, you’re hardly alone.

Across our communities, families are finding it more cumbersome to come together around the dinner table, in what once was an everyday occurrence in most suburban households.

But experts say this family habit should be embraced, even if it means tweaking the schedule to do so. Whether it’s dinner seven nights a week, weekend breakfasts in pajamas or a standing dinner date on Wednesdays, dinnertime can be an important way to strengthen a family’s relationship bonds, said Aimee KoernerFrank, a clinical psychiatrist.

She says making time to be together and to actively listen can be an important social time.

to hear what they’re saying,” she said. “It helps our kids to know they have our full attention.”

At dinnertime with the Wheelers, family members take turns sharing something good about their days. To reinforce the active listening, the other family members must then summarize what the others have said.

It’s an activity that Wheeler said has helped boast her boys’ listening skills and help to deal with the “I/me” concentration young children often exhibit.

“It’s helped them to understand what people say is important, it’s not all about themselves,” she said. “It’s helped to spark more conversation too.”

is a wonderful way to work on social skills and for parents, to really connect with their children. But it’s not just about asking children about their day. She encourages parents to share as well. Hearing how a parent resolves a challenging work task, deadline or difficult co-worker can offer important lessons to children.

“Dinner is a great time because it’s something that naturally happens and [parents] can build it to an opportunity to relate, communicate and connect,” she said.

But Koerner-Frank also recognizes the challenges bonding at 6 p.m. can bring. It can be a “witching hour” as children and parents transition from the day – everyone can be a little more tired, a little more stressed, a little less cooperative.

At the Kelsey home, Kevin Kelsey acknowledges not everyone is enamored with the meal he makes. This one won’t eat eggplant, another wants chicken. Kelsey, who is charged with the bulk of the weekday cooking for his wife and three sons, said he tries to keep it simple.

“I’m not a short-order cook,” he adds with a smile.

Kelsey said he finds way to simplify meal time with dishes that can be re-purposed throughout the week. The grilled chicken on Monday becomes a salad on Tuesday.

“With our busy schedule, there are some appliances I lean on a lot more than others,” he said.

And that’s okay, as is revising the family dinner to a timeframe that works with your family’s schedule. Koerner-Frank said the start of a new school year is the perfect time to review the family schedule and carve out meal times together.

“Maybe it’s Tuesday and Thursdays, or maybe it’s weekends or maybe it’s lunch on Sundays after church,” she said. “Now is the time to restart the schedule.”

And one golden rule for positive family meal time is no electronics or toys at the table, parents included. Roxanne Kelsey admits that lately, she’s the one busted for glancing at her phone during dinner.

“You have to put the stuff away and have an opportunity for your kids to have your undivided attention,” Koerner-Frank said.

EXCEL Local woman never gives up her college dream

The summer months typically are a time of excitement and anticipation for college-bound teens. But just days before Elizabeth Salvo was supposed to leave for Arizona State University, tragedy struck, when her single mom suffered a brain aneurism.

“In the beginning I kept thinking ‘she’ll get better and I’ll go next month.’

Or next semester. It was my coping mechanism,” recalls Elizabeth, who was 18 years old at the time. “Then finally the doctor told me she was permanently brain damaged and I needed to pick out a nursing home.”

So Elizabeth passed on ASU and the dreams of law school to follow, and stayed nearby with her ailing mother. She eventually completed an associate's degree at Triton College in River Forest and became a paralegal for McDonald’s Corporation. But Elizabeth, now a working mother of two, still yearned for a more complete college education.

“It was this nagging little voice, like Jiminy Cricket,” Elizabeth says. “I was working with people who had law degrees, and I had an associate’s degree. There was only so far I could go.”

Unsure whether to pursue her old dream of becoming a lawyer, Salvo began to investigate degree programs. About the same time, she met a McDonald’s colleague, Gordana Vujanovich, with a similar goal.

“I mentioned that that I was interested in going back to school, and she said, ‘so am I,’” recalls Elizabeth.

Both decided to enter the accelerated adult program at Lewis University in Romeoville. In addition to the ongoing encouragement from the families, both woman felt the benefit of having a school buddy.

“We worked at the same company and were going through the same things, so it was great to have a friend who understood,” says Gordana, also a mother of two.

She recalls that camaraderie coming into play the first day of a finance class, when the pressure almost drove Gordana to tears.

“Numbers and I don’t get along and I said to Elizabeth, ‘I don’t think I can get through this.’ Gordana recalls. “She squeezed my arm and said ‘you will get through it, and you need to stop this right now.’ I ended up getting an ‘A’.”

The friends earned their degrees in organizational leadership, and Elizabeth now boasts a full-time management position in the Nutrition Department for McDonald’s. Gordana is a senior paralegal.

They’re teaming up again in the Elmhurst College MBA program. But despite the benefit of having a study buddy, continuing school later in life has its challenges. m y s u b u r b a n l i f e . c o m /m a g a z i n e

LENCE “I think this would have been easier when my kids were younger and they went to bed earlier and didn’t do as many sports, “ Elizabeth says. “I try not to miss a game, but I have to when they fall on school night.”

Helping children navigate the muddy waters of adolescent angst By Tom Witom

T

he phone rings mid-day and it’s your son or daughter’s school. It’s not the nurse or the teacher. It’s the principal calling. And she’s calling because of bullying.

a student fear bodily harm; detrimentally affect the student’s physical or mental health; or interfere with academic performance or ability to participate or benefit from school services and activities.

Whether your child is the target or the wrong-doer, it’s a call no parent wants to receive, and never an easy subject to handle.

In other words, the misbehavior involves using power to impose control over another person.

“Part of the problem now is that any mean behavior (such as mere teasing and trading insults) can get mistaken as bullying,” says Mary Ellen Young, a bully consultant, co-founder of Helping Girls Navigate Adolescence and former member of the District 58 Downers Grove Grade School board. “We have muddied the waters by labeling everything as bullying and reacting to even minor offenses in big ways.”

But bullying is a complex social problem, and experts note that if schools could simply wave a wand and get it to go away, they would do just that.

Legally, Illinois defines bullying any severe or pervasive physical or verbal act or conduct, including communications made in writing or electronically, directed toward a student that has or can be reasonably predicted to make

“In the past, schools would say to parents, ‘Here’s what educators need you to do for us.

Please help us.’ We have now flipped that role and ask, ‘What can we as educators do to help you?’” Ruscitti says. “We’re discovering that parents are hungry to learn how to be better parents.”

Young says when a parent learns that her child is humiliated, rejected or hurt in any way, it’s natural for a protective “Mama Bear” response to come into play. Before charging off to the school demanding that the bullying stop, she recommends taking a step back and reflecting on what the child is going to learn from the experience and creating a safe haven for the kids at home. She recommends providing activities outside the school where the child can feel confident and accepted by friends.

Ruth Cross, a Downers Grove-based SEL skills training coach and bullying prevention workshop facilitator who serves clients in Kane and DuPage counties through Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), says it’s critical that these skills be taught to victims, bystanders and the bullies themselves.

“I applaud any mom or dad who recognizes that their child is a bully, because our natural tendency is to deny that and cast blame elsewhere,” Young says. “That’s a healthy first step.

“It’s also important to note that roles tend to be very fluid,” Young says. “Sometimes there are cases where a bully is a bully and a victim is a victim. But often someone who is victimized goes on to bully other kids, and the roles get reversed.”

For that reason, Young hesitates to label a person as a bully but prefers to say ‘You’re exhibiting bullying behavior’ – since behavior is a lot easier to change than who we are.

“You can’t control the other child’s behavior or what the school is doing in response to it,” she says. “What you can have control over is what your child takes away from the situation.” m y s u b u r b a n l i f e . c o m /m a g a z i n e

Bag your books with style, and safety in mind As the school year begins, with it come concerns for child health. There are shots and screenings, allergy medications and eyeglass fittings. But one malady is carried home every day, on the backs of kids across the suburbs.

The American Occupational Therapy Association claims that more than 50 percent of students ages 9 to 20 have chronic back pain from overpacked or poorly-packed backpacks.

What’s a concerned parent to do?

Dr. Mike DeCubellis of Main Street Chiropractic in Downers Grove offers advice to reduce back stress and protect children’s growing bodies.

Q – There are a lot of styles of backpacks out there, from standard two strap on your back styles to satchel across the body styles to slings. What’s the best for good back health?

A – “The hands down best is a rolling back that can be pulled. I know this is not very popular, but this hands down puts the least stress on your body. While it may not look the best, if you have to wear a backpack its best to wear it in front.

This allows you to keep your proper cervical (neck) curve. This does put more stress on your lower back, but these muscles are stronger, discs are bigger, and vertabrae are bigger and made to carry more load then your neck.

Satchel type packs and one strap packs put all the weight on one shoulder, not allowing it to be equally distributed between sides. It’s best to make sure to alter sides you carry these packs on, just like a purse. These can also be harder to use as the typically carry less then other pack options.”

Q – What do parents need to know when purchasing a bag for their kids, and using it daily?

A – “Make sure the straps are set properly and even from side to side. Also, parents should look for any way to reduce backpack overall weight.

If it’s possible to use a locker and decrease the amount they are hauling around all day, this will make a huge impact. If books aren’t essential, leave them at home or at school. Also, find out if any textbooks are available in digital format.

Some schools have gone this route while others haven’t, but always worth it to ask.”

Q – A lot of kids are carrying way too much weight for their frames. If we can’t change that, what can we do for our kids to compensate for the stress it puts on their spines?

A – “The problem is the weight shifts your center of gravity, changing the bodies bio-mechanics to keep from falling over. This eventually starts to change the curves of the neck and low back.

Having proper check-ups with a chiropractor can help avoid these, and home stretches and exercises can be discusses, as these need to be individualized based on each person and their situation.

Q – In general, is there a weight to carry that’s appropriate?

This is going to be different for each individual as body mass and build differ.

The best is always to reduce the weight as much as possible to be safe.

Dwellers Local residents discover the benefits of salt-therapy in a unique and relaxing spa experience

For more than 200 years, naturally occurring salt caves in Eastern Europe have been known for their health benefits related to respiratory conditions. Now, having experienced the therapeutic value of these salt caves, spa owners are commissioning man made salt caves within their larger spas. The first man-made salt caves in the United States were built around 2005, using salts from the Dead Sea. The characteristic bright white color of the salt gives the caves an arctic look.

In 2007, the first pink Himalayan salt cave was designed and built in the United States by Margaret Smiechowski, known as North America’s foremost expert Himalayan salt caves, selecting the rosy pink salt for her designs because she says it is the purest form, with no toxins. It is antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory, she says.

“As a child in Poland, I was very aware of the benefits of salt,” she recalls. “Miners in the salt caves were known to have the best health, so in our country it was common knowledge that salt carried with it some powerful wellness benefits. In Wieliczka, Poland, there is small city built deep into the salt mines that includes a hospital which specializes in respiratory treatments.”

It became Smiechowski’s calling to recreate the salt caves of her youth in the United States.

To date, she has designed and built ten salt caves throughout the country, including serving as a consultant to Primal Oceans Salt Cave in La Grange, which opened in April. Owners Peggy McDonald and Karen Stoelinga welcome visitors to view their salt cave which and educate and explain the possible benefits of salt therapy.

A delicious lesson in geography…

Have you ever wondered if different wine-producing regions have their own “specialties?” The answer is yes. Over the centuries, most major wine producing areas have determined the grapes which thrive and which don’t in their particular soils. As well, they have learned to the grapes to produce the best wines, and let go of those that don’t measure up. These lessons result in wines that are true expressions of their locales.

Spain Sangiovese U.S. Pinotage Italy Tempranillo Australia Zinfandel South Africa Shiraz Tempranillo – Spain If you've ever enjoyed a Spanish Rioja, then you've had Tempranillo. In Spain (just like France and Italy) most wines are named after their place of origin rather than the major grape varietal. I say most because there are always, always exceptions. Rioja is located in the northern part of the country. North of Madrid and west of Barcelona. 75 to 80 percent of all wine produced in this region is red and the primary grape is Tempranillo.

Pinotage – South Africa It’s an interesting combination. Pinotage is a hybrid created in 1925. It’s a cross of Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, but it doesn't taste like either one. A bit rustic, it comes across heavier than Cinsaut and lighter than Pinot Noir, with a touch of what we call "South African Tar." A small amount of Pinotage is produced here in the United States, but by far the majority of it comes from South Africa.

Sangiovese – Italy When you think Italy you probably think Chianti. But again, Chianti is not a grape. It's a region in Tuscany, pretty much right smack in the middle of the country. The primary grape of Chianti is Sangiovese, and it is the perfect food wine. It's high in acid, relatively low in alcohol, medium bodied, and only moderately tannic. It's full of cherry and cedar flavors. And here's a fun fact to amuse your friends: The name “Sangiovese” is thought to be from the Latin sanguis Jovis, Blood of Jupiter.

Shiraz – Australia Down under, on the other side of the world Shiraz is king. Now, Shiraz is the same as Syrah, but you know the Australians… they have to put their own labels on things, so Shiraz it is. They've been producing this wine since the early 1800s and it’s definitely evolved with Aussie style. Australian Shiraz is big, bold, and juicy, sometimes overwhelming, but typically delicious. Recently, the U.S. market has been flooded with inexpensive Australian Shiraz. It's okay, but not a true example of what the Aussies can produce. Try a big Shiraz with your next barbecue. I think you'll be delightedly surprised.

Zinfandel – United States In the United States, especially in California, we grow just about every type of wine grape you can imagine, and arguably, you might say that Cabernet is our grape. But the reason I chose Zinfandel (and I'm talking red Zinfandel not white) is simple. It's the only completely American grape. While most other varietals came over with European immigrants, Zinfandel was here when they arrived. It's a spicy, in your face, no prisoners taken, no apologies made, red wine. When someone comes into my shop and wants to buy a bottle of wine to take as a gift to someone in Europe (or anywhere other than here,) I almost always recommend Zinfandel. It's what we are.

A lot of folks are operating under the misconception that the only wines from Germany are white wines. But while the Riesling and Gewürztraminer might be the most popular German choices in the United States, the German drinkers are familiar with the bold tastes and textures of the country’s marvelous red wines. We love a German red, especially this one, which is Otto Brandt’s Wine of the Year for 2013.

The wine from this grape has virtually no acidity, astringency or heavy tannins. This wine tastes nothing like it looks – because of the deep purple, almost black color drinkers might assume a dry heavy red wine. But rich, powerful, fruity sweetness emerges instead, followed by a long lingering finish with just a hint of clove. Prime rib, roast duck, and wild game such as pheasant, or venison pair nicely. The concentration of fruit is so dense, its rich taste will last for a month in the refrigerator after opening, so long as its corked. Suggested retail $24.99 2011 Julius ClaussNiersteiner Gutes Domtal –Rheinhessen Region The German whites still surprise, however, and this best of the early harvest Kabinett is made from the Muller Thurgau grape. Good Kabinetts should be the perfect balance of fruit and acidity. This particular vintage does not disappoint. It is rich and fruity, with tropical fruit flavors and a lingering finish. Naturally light, this white wine goes well with seafood, chicken, turkey, lamb, or just chilled on a warm summer day on the patio. I

n west suburban Berwyn, along a stretch of historic Route 66, sits a 20,000 square foot tribute to great food and riding the open road – Paisan’s Pizzeria and Bar.

This is no simple pizza joint. It’s an expansive restaurant and banquet facility with comfort foods and handmade desserts served in a bold and impressive 20,000 square foot industrial-style space. Custom motorcycles are on display and a dragster hangs in mid-air above the bar.

Paisan’s serves thousands of customers every week in its dining rooms, banquet rooms, by delivery and at special catered events. But despite its size

and success the biggest thing about Paisan’s is its heart, and a foundation built upon family and friendship.

Paisan’s Pizzeria had humble beginnings more than 20 years ago. Owner Luigi opened the restaurant in Cicero in 1985, with a single small oven. But from that oven he filled order after order of homemade thin crust pizza, satisfying customers and creating a loyal following, one pie at a time.

Today, Luigi’s dream has become his son’s calling, and the second generation of Paisan’s had brought the family business to new and exciting levels.

But that same pizza recipe that made Paisan’s famous continues to satisfy diners alongside succulent burgers, hand tossed pastas, and freshly made gelatos.

“We are a true scratch kitchen,” says Paisan’s owner Pete. “Our executive chef and pastry chef oversee every plate that leaves the kitchen. We hand cut

our fries, make our own wings and wing sauces, smoke our own pulled pork.”

Everything at Paisan’s is made to order. Just moments after the customer orders a classic Paisan’s pizza, cooks begin tossing the dough, so that every bite is as delicious as the ones Luigi made himself nearly a quarter century ago.

“We also have the best burgers around and chef creates new specials every week,” says Pete.

And it’s not just the food that’s special. This is a family run business. Pete and his family still work at all the locations every day.

Together with event experts they are constantly hosting hip local events centered on food and drink – from formal beer tasting dinners to holiday events, cook outs to vendor nights, where diners can shop while they eat.

“We always are trying new things,” says Pete. “We can create anything you can imagine, here in the restaurant or delivered to your home, for your family, or your next big party.”

Artistic game boards to be auctioned for charity

T

ake a stroll through downtown La Grange this summer, and you’ll likely catch sight of a series of unique art pieces, made from a popular backyard pastime.

A whimsical outdoor art exhibit featuring more than 50 sets of bag toss boards weaves through the downtown sector. The unusual display, aptly named “Fun & Games in La Grange,” has been an effort of the La Grange Business Association, and is supported by local small businesses, which sponsored the artwork and secured local artist to design the boards.

But it’s been more than simple fun and games. The bag toss boards will be auctioned for charity from the lawn of the village hall on Friday, September 6.

Pre-auction viewing begins at 5 p.m. with live musical entertainment. Beer, wine and refreshments will be available from local restaurants.

The artists have created artwork with a full range of styles with unique themes such as “Ice Cream Land,” “The Grateful Dead Steal Your Face,” and “It’s All Fun and Games Until Captain Ahab Loses a Leg.” Walking maps are available at various La Grange businesses The exhibit map is also posted online at www.lgba.com, where enthusiasts can vote for their favorite set of bag toss boards in the People’s Choice Award.

showcase JOHN WALKER | Downers Grove “Voodoo Steps Out” The title refers to the subject’s chihuahua named VooDoo. The painting is a mood piece, seeking to capture an attitude and contemporary urban feel, and was executed in acrylic on a textured hardboard substrate.

An accomplished and award-winning artist, John Walker spent years creating art to satisfy the demands of clients such as National Geographic, The Bradford Exchange, McDonalds, Warner Brothers and Random House. Today, he spends more time painting personal pieces, recently focused on portrait and figurative work, primarily using acrylics on hardboard, like the featured piece, Voodoo Steps Out, which has been selected to appear in a new North Light Books compendium, showcasing the best of contemporary acrylic painting.

In addition to his studio work, he teaches his acrylic painting technique through demonstrations and workshops.He is a member of The National Society of Casein and Acrylic Painters, the Downers Grove Artist’s Guild, the DuPage Art League, and the Elmhurst Artists’ Guild.
