For those new to Westmont, please note that Westmont celebrated our 100th anniversary on November 10, 2021! Together we work as a community with our many organizations, residents and our businesses (all of which you can learn more about in this handy community guide). Our teamwork will help us plan and implement our future growth and success for the next 100 years of Westmont. To help keep connected throughout the year, visit the VIllage of Westmont website at www.westmont.illinois.gov for information on all things Westmont. Also, we recommend using the “Notify Me” option at the village website; this will allow you to receive emails and text messages and stay aware of events, news and any emergency weather situations. Everyone finds this information helpful, so please register to connect soon. Westmont also offers social media resources to keep all informed on an ongoing basis. Westmont is a great place to relax and stay healthy. While the Village of Westmont is five square miles and about 25,000 residents, our Westmont Park District offers over 150 acres of park property throughout the Village for use by all ages all yearround. Westmont also offers three golf courses to help keep us active and enjoying the great outdoors. In addition, recently Westmont welcomed the brand new FMC Natatorium at Ty Warner Park, an Olympic caliber swimming facility for all ages. Westmont also offers many fitness centers to help you get in your daily workouts and is bike friendly.

Westmont residents also benefit greatly from our highperformance local community school districts, serving our children from preschool through post-high school levels. In support of our schools, our Westmont Public Library is second to none, offering a fully updated facility, latest technology, fantastic staff and programming for all ages. DuPage County is the second most populated county in Illinois at 922,921 people. The median property value is $316,600, and the homeownership rate is 73.5 percent. The average car ownership in DuPage County is two cars per household. About 491,000 people work in DuPage County, with the majority of jobs in health care (61,245) led by industries such as manufacturing (59,905) and professional, scientific and technical services (53,676).

100 Years
November 10, 2021 marked the first century of Westmont
H
appy 100th to Westmont! While Westmont reached our 100th year, our history goes back to the 1870s. It was commercial ventures, specifically bricks and stones, which provided the historical foundation for a thriving community. Following the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, brick manufacturers were eager to take advantage of the area’s natural resources to fulfill the huge demand for bricks for the rebuilding of Chicago. The Chicago-Aurora branch of the Chicago-Burlington & Quincy Railroad, completed in 1864, provided the necessary transportation making currentday Westmont the perfect location for William L. Gregg to establish his brickmaking company, Excelsior Press Brick Manufacturing Company. The company employed 120 people and produced
70,000 bricks per day. The rail stop known as Gregg’s Milk Station was a popular flagstop on the line as cars picked up milk from local farmers. Land developer Arthur McIntosh began buying property in the area in 1920, hoping to found a town where those wanting to build could buy land for as little as $5 down. In 1921, the Village of Westmont was incorporated. Being the highest location west of Chicago along the railroad, its name was a natural fit. Vince Pastor was chosen as the first village board president and held office for two years. Through the decades, Westmont has been able to maintain a wonderful community that is just as attractive to businesses as it is to residents. On November 10, 2021, Westmont celebrated its 100th anniversary

of incorporation with a celebration at Westmont Village Hall. To celebrate, the Village of Westmont created the Westmont 100th Anniversary Committee. The committee, chaired by Mayor Ron Gunter and co-chaired by Director Larry McIntyre, is comprised of volunteers: Julia Cohen, Westmont Public Library; Larry Forssberg, Westmont Chamber of Commerce; Bob Fleck, Westmont Park District; Sandy Henricksen, Maercker School District; Alice Krampits, Westmont Historical Society; Amy Quattrone, Community Unit School District 201; Will Sperling, resident; and Steve May, Village of Westmont. A special “thank you” to the entire committee for helping plan the 100th celebration that was held on November 10, 2021...now on to our next 100 years of community!

Annual Westmont Community Awards Program WESTMONT RECOGNIZES EXCELLENCE IN THE COMMUNITY
T
he Westmont Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau (WCCTB) released a video spotlighting the Annual Westmont Community Awards. These awards are presented by the Westmont Chamber along with the Village of Westmont, Rotary Club of Westmont, Westmont Special Events Corporation and the Knights of Columbus. These organizations are collectively proud to recognize the individuals and businesses that help contribute to the growth and success of Westmont. The Westmont Chamber Community Awards program is an annual tradition usually combined with a banquet dinner. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the awards were presented to the recipients, captured on video and in photos. This award program provides the opportunity to pause and recognize the many wonderful volunteers, activities and businesses that work to make Westmont a great place to live, work and visit. During the awards program, the following special community recognitions and awards were presented.

n The 2020 Dick Busse Business-ofthe-Year Award recognizes a Chamber business that has excelled in community service, business promotion, civic responsibility and contributions to the betterment of the Chamber and the Village of Westmont. The nominees for this award were: Dynamic Perception Dance Company and Urban Veterinary Associates. The Dick Busse Business-ofthe-Year award was presented to Dynamic Perception Dance Company (766 Burr Oak Dr.) in recognition of their high level of community interaction and support.
n The 2020 Educator-of-the-Year Award recognizes a local educator for their outstanding efforts in their field and to the betterment of the Village of Westmont. This year the committee decided to recognize all teachers that have gone through this extraordinary time to reinvent the learning process in a COVID-19 environment. The Educators-of-the-Year award was presented to the teachers at:
n The 2020 Roger Westman President’s Award recognizes an individual who has performed outstanding service to the Chamber and the Westmont Community. The Roger Westman President’s award was presented to the Village of Westmont by Westmont Chamber Past President Steve Wozny.

n 2020 Westmont Citizen-of-the-Year Award recognizes individuals that reside in Westmont and that have demonstrated exceptional community involvement and leadership. Mayor Gunter noted “we have five wonderful people nominated for the Westmont Citizen of the Year that have made such a positive impact to the success of Westmont.” The nominees for this award were: Ernest Chen, Wallace D. Vanburen, Tracey Valerio Spotts, Maggie South, and Ron Niemer. The Westmont Citizen-of-theYear award was presented to Maggie South by Westmont Mayor Ron Gunter during a recent Village Board meeting.

The 2021 winners of the Westmont Dining Reader's Choice Awards are: the popular Westmont Restaurant Week, slated for Thursday, Feb. 17 through Sunday, Feb. 27, 2022. During Restaurant Week, participating restaurants offer menu specials including fixed-price menus for guests to sample multiple courses as well as other food and beverage discounts. It’s a great time to delve into a new restaurant and sample some of the chef’s specials. The past two years have been difficult across all businesses including restaurants. The Westmont Chamber of Commerce and the Village of Westmont have worked together to support restaurants, including streamlining the process to allow more alfresco dining, utilizing private and public spaces to allow restaurants to provide outdoor customer seating, Forssberg said. Even with the challenges of the pandemic, Forssberg said the village was able to retain all of its restaurants and has even welcomed a few new ones to the community. Watch for the annual Suburban Life Reader’s Choice nominations in the spring and vote for your favorite dining destinations.

he Westmont Public Library opened at its current location on January 27, 1993. The 28,000-square-foot building engages about 500 visitors a day and provides physical and digital collections, computer labs, free wi-fi, art gallery space, makerspace tools, and more. Meeting rooms accommodate large groups and five study rooms are available to small groups or individuals free of charge. The library also hosts a wide range of programs for adults and children, including monthly book clubs, storytimes, and hands-on workshops. Westmont Chamber joins in supporting senior safety
A
s the nation’s population ages, municipalities and organizations are taking a proactive approach to maintain the safety of seniors. In addition to the Village of Westmont and its departments and organizations earning Dementiafriendly certification in 2021, the Westmont Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau took part in the program, as well. “It’s relatively new and only a handful of cities in the state of Illinois have received it so far,” says Chamber Executive Director Larry Forssberg. “That means we’ve been doing training for the police and fire departments, the business community, and others in the community on how to best understand and interact and support those with dementia. We’re moving it out further into the business community as we go forward.” When a first responder engages with someone with dementia, often that person can act agitated or upset. “Police and Fire are trained in those issues,” says Forssberg. “Our first responders went through a series of training programs and now our business

It’s designed for folks who interact with customers.” Forssberg points out restaurants as an example, where servers and wait staff engage with customers constantly. “If someone can’t understand a menu or their listening capabilities may not be the best, someone may need to repeat something several times. A variety of interactions can become issues if dementia is not recognized quickly. “We have a lot of seniors in our community, and I don’t think a lot of communities across the country had given much thought to it in the past,” says Forssberg, adding that when the program was presented to the village, community leaders jumped on board to do what was necessary to qualify as a dementia-friendly community. Retail can be another situation where a person with dementia may make a large or inappropriate purchase if an employee has not been trained to identify symptoms of dementia. “There are a lot of
ways where it comes into play,” says Forssberg. Through the program, employees learn the proper way to deal with someone who may be agitated or not fully engaged or behaving in some unusual way. It’s just making sure we’re not having an initial reaction that’s not positive where they feel someone is being rude or obnoxious,” says Forssberg. The Dementia Friendly Westmont program offers a resource guide to the community that includes listings for dementia caregiver support groups, adult day services, dementia education and activity ideas, emergency services and general resources. “We want people to know if situations and challenges arise, there are places they can look to for help,” says Forssberg. The Dementia Friendly Westmont mission: To raise awareness, reduce stigma, provide resources, and increase support for those living with dementia through education and coordination of resources.
