West End closes summer with art, music and food The West End Art Festival celebrates the close of the summer season from September 17-18, 2016 with a noteworthy lineup of juried fine artists from throughout the Midwest, throughout the Chicago area as well as student artists from around the block.

Presented by the La Grange Business Association and held in cooperation with the Village of La Grange, the festival highlights the established cultural scene of art galleries, dance, and music studios that La Grange has to offer in addition to its award-winning restaurants, eclectic boutiques and thriving business community.

The festival is held in the shadow of the landmark Stone Avenue Metra Station along Burlington Avenue between Brainard and Spring Avenue.

On Saturday, artists’ booths will be open from 10 am - 5 pm; evening music and limited artists remain open for browsing and purchase from 5 pm to 10pm; and on Sunday the hours are 10 am - 4 pm.

Saturday evening, called “A Night of Art & Jazz,” will feature a live art auction of several six-foot-tall peace pole bird houses that have been on display throughout La Grange as a part of an outdoor art exhibit this summer. The live auction begins at 6pm and will benefit local charities. Afterwards, the highenergy, big band sounds of the Reunion Jazz Orchestra will fill the West End of La Grange from 7:30 pm to 10 pm, and selected artists will stay open late to allow festival goers to browse and shop while listening to great music with food and wine available from local restaurants.

The Art of Food tent, sponsored by Baird & Warner, features culinary demonstrations throughout the weekend from chefs at popular establishments. (See schedule at right.)

Throughout the weekend, patrons can join in and show off their own artistic sides by contributing to the creation of a community mural or by purchasing a small canvas and making their own masterpiece with help from the staff of Bottle and Bottega.

Previously a sculptor of heavy metal, and after a life changing van accident due to the weight of his pieces, Lensink made a choice to continue creating unique original pieces of sculpture…but now in a smaller form known as jewelry. The pieces he creates are of .999 fine silver and .935 Sterling. “I sculpt, multi-layer, carve, engrave, burnish, etch, setting precious stones and pearls into the silver and creating beautiful wearable art as pendants and earrings,” he says. “No two pieces are exactly alike.”

Smetana creates artisan gemstone and recycled metal jewelry. She uses gemstones in different cuts and colors as well as Karen Hill Thai silver components. In addition, many of my pieces include her own handmade glass beads. “I love that there are so many tools and techniques that can be used to create jewelry,” she says. “I will forever be a jewelry student building my skills and incorporating new techniques into my pieces.”

Widner’s art is inspired by travel and reflects the sights, sounds, and colors of the places he visits. After leaving his job as a music librarian to pursue an artistic life, he received his MFA in Book and Paper Arts at Columbia College Chicago in 2012. “My work reflects my interest in other cultures, particularly their myths and rituals. I am interested in voices and stories of the past, and seek to recreate these stories in artist books and other paper objects.”

Gorman’s introduction to clay began as a young Girl Scout, and she subsequently fell in love with clay at her first teaching job at York High School. Gorman went on to teach ceramics and jewelry for many years at LTHS, but in retirement has really found the time to develop her own work. “Most of my designs are inspired by nature,” she explains.

“I focus on functional work because I want my customers to be able to enjoy my work through everyday use.”

Willer has been painting professionally for 22 years. working with acrylic paint, often combined with pencil and crayon, on canvas.

Her ideas come from the things around her, and from her imagination. She creates the initial image on the canvas by applying paint using a mono-type transfer process. “The main composition will grab your attention, but you'll also need to step up close, where you'll discover a whole little world of tiny drawings and graffiti.” Using a sgraffito technique, she fills the space with tiny sketches, figures and sometimes dialogue.

Isn't That Sweet

Nicole Betourney started Isn't That Sweet in 2007, in an effort to bring her love and passion for pastry to others. In 2013, Isn’t That Sweet the retail boutique was born in downtown La Grange, offering French inspired pastries from Macarons to Croissants. Over the past 4 years, Chef Nicole and Isn’t That Sweet has been featured on WGN and Windy City Live, and has had multiple articles in Chicago Magazine and Suburban Life.

Terry Rempert received his B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Missouri where he worked in food service early on in his career. Later he received his Associates Degree in Culinary Arts from the College of DuPage. Armand's celebrates 60 years with new La Grange location After 60 years in the pizza business, Armand’s Pizzeria has opened Armand’s Victory Tap, a full service restaurant and bar at 26 S La Grange Road, in La Grange.

Armand’s Victory Tap will be dishing up its famous original, square-cut, thin crust pie and a variety of traditional Italian fare.

Armand’s Pizza first opened in 1956, when two childhood friends Michael Caringella and Armand Christopher purchased a tavern on Grand Avenue in Elmwood Park and thus, “Armand’s Victory Tap” was born, and later simply, “Armand’s.”

During the suburban post-war boom, Armand’s tavern grew quickly to accommodate over 300 customers.

The delivery business grew to the point where 50 delivery drivers were needed on weekends During 55 years of business, it is estimated that over 4,000 drivers have worked for Armand’s.

A destination for neighborhood residents and local celebrities alike, Armand’s sold thousands of their signature thin, corn meal dusted pizzas as well as other popular items, including the famous stuffed artichoke, baked clams and Antipasto salad. It all came down to the people behind the scenes specifically Mike and his mom, Grandma Caringella, who ruled the kitchen.

The newest location in La Grange pays homage to the original in name, “Armand’s Victory Tap,” and celebrates the tradition of its 1956 Chicago tavern by offering its famous thin crust pizza and classic Italian fare in a swanky yet comfortable dining room and bar. OWL AND LARK BALANCES OLD WORLD IDEAS WITH A SPLASH OF NEW AGE INGENUITY

O

n the hillsides of rural Lithuania, the seeds of a La Grange business were planted.

The future entrepreneurs didn’t know it at the time (they didn't even know each other at the time), but the common childhood experience shared by Lina Kiznyte and Birute Cepaityte would blossom into Owl & Lark, a juice and coffee bar that offers warmth and respite to La Grange customers.

Farm–to-table fresh ingredients, madefrom-scratch recipes and attention to detail have made the first months for Owl & Lark a whirlwind.

“The support of the community has been such a welcome surprise,” says Cepaityte.

“We have customers coming in from as far as Orland Park and quite a few from Hinsdale, as well. Our regulars are so supportive.”

That’s likely because Owl & Lark offers something outside the ordinary. A bright and open Scandanavian-styled interior is calm and inviting. Guests stop in after yoga, others are working or studying. Some are even knitting.

But make no mistake – they all are at Owl & Lark for the food and drink.

“In Lithuania, everyone has their own garden.

Even if you don’t live on a farm, you have a plot of land somewhere and grow your own vegetables,” Kiznyte says. “So, farm-fresh was just the way we did things.”

Both owners moved to the United States as teenagers and now reside in La Grange Park and Lisle.

“Whenever we were sick, my grandmother would make us fresh juices and home remedies. That was our medicine,” she adds.

“We brought that idea here - in the juices and smoothies we make for our customers.”

Just one look at one of the cafe's juices or smoothies, and customers know that this is this is a different sort of place. The food is vibrant. Juice drinks boast shades of deep fuchsia, rich green and almost glowing orange – all the result of the pure, natural ingredients contained within.

Flavors are just as bright. From the nutty smoothness of almond milk made from scratch in the shop, to the tangy pink pickled onions (also house-made) that grace an openfaced smoked salmon toast, the food is as delicious as it is inviting.

The menu focuses its attention on the natural. “We are both passionate about food,” says Cepaityte. “We are health conscious, but Organic ingredients are used as much as believe in balance.” possible, and many are locally sourced.

Perhaps it is the balance of experiences the owners bring to the partnership that makes it work so well. Cepaityte studied public health, and her awareness about nutrition and diet drive the recipes that fill Owl & Lark’s menu.

“It’s a challenge to find farmers directly, especially when you are small, so we went with a distributor that deals primarily in Midwestern produce,” she says. “This makes our menu somewhat changeable, and seasonal, and we are looking to add more fall and winter flavors to the menu in coming months.”

Kiznyte is the artist. A photographer and graphic designer by training, her vision is apparent in the artfulness of each plate.

They also want to keep their team healthy and energetic. A dare-turned-team-building ritual happens every Thursday, as the entire crew on duty takes a moment to share in a toast with a freshly pureed shot of pure ginger - a longtime habit for the owners.

“It’s fun,” Kiznyte says. “And we haven’t been sick for three years.”

“We both have traveled in Europe, and there are many juice bars and cafes where people would relax, take their time,” Kiznyte says.

“The Midwest was lacking that, so we made it.”

ll too often, people try to make wine out to be more than it is: grapes harvested by farmers, fermented to produce alcohol and often aged to develop character and soften the final product.

Tasting wine is no exception. Frequently, people are afraid to go to a wine tasting because they are unsure of what they should be looking for., but the qualities to look for are as simple as your senses: sight, smell, and taste.

Wine tasting is subjective and there are no right or wrong answers, only opinion. What looks, smells, and tastes one way to you, may be completely different than what someone else experiences. It is the matter of opinion that makes wine drinking such a social event.

Remember 90 percent of taste is smell. It is important to leave the wine in your mouth for three to five seconds. This allows for the wine to coat all sides of your tongue and all areas of your taste buds. You will have a much better understanding of the wine and its sweet, salty, bitter or sour qualities after doing so.

After swallowing the wine, try to breathe out through your nose. It is the final chance to savor the essence of the wine you just drank.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer with an estimated 180,000 new cases in the United States this year. That is more than 10 percent of all cancers. The good news is that with modern-day diagnosis and treatment, more patients are being cured or living longer with their disease.

Here are a few misconceptions surrounding prostate cancer: MYTH #1: Prostate cancer occurs only in old men.

Forty-three percent of patients newly diagnosed with prostate cancer are under the age of 65.

Ten percent are under the age of 55. With people are living longer in general, those ages are even younger than they were in the past.

Of note, it is generally true that the older you are, the more likely you are to be diagnosed with prostate cancer.

MYTH #2: Prostate cancer is always a slowgrowing cancer.

Prostate cancer varies greatly from patient to patient and no two cancers are exactly alike.

While it is true that many forms of prostate cancer are relative slow growing, a good percentage of prostate cancers actually spread rapidly. The latest research shows certain genetic forms of prostate cancer are very aggressive.

STEP BACK IN TIME in this historically-styled modern home

T

he house at 125 S. Spring Ave. in La Grange is intriguing. And charming.

And unusual.

And while the outside may look historic, the inside is anything but.

That’s because this house, built in 2002, looks like it was constructed in the mid- to late 1800s.

“You walk in the front door and feel like 100 years have passed… in a good way,” says Kerri Mahon, real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in La Grange. “It’s very grand.

“With the unfinished basement there is over 9,000 square feet. You can add a theater, compared to an older home. There are tall ceilings and it’s wired right with all the amenities, including a second-floor laundry unit,” Mahon says.

The owners had a vision for their French Victorian home, the Second Empire architectural style. It was popularized between 1865 and 1880, named for the style that evolved from its 17th century Renaissance foundations.

“The style is unusual but it fits this historical section of La Grange,” says Randy King, owner of Architects By Design in Clarendon Hills, which helped the owners – with whom he attended Lyons Township High School – design the house.

“Older homes come with problems or issues.

and it fits the period of the house.

“This house is unusual in its design because of its mansard roof and French flair,” Mahon says.

“It’s cognizant to blend with the rest of the street.”

As King explained, “People want the historical exterior but appliances from 2016, not 1896,” adding that older houses had more rooms – even though they were often smaller – because the number of rooms determined a home’s value.

“We don’t do a lot of living rooms today. The combination we see is a dining room/study/ family room. The study has replaced the living room.”

And then there are the two stars of newer construction, master bathrooms and kitchens _ made large and inviting in this home.

“These rooms were not where people spent their time, so in older homes these rooms are much smaller,” Mahon says.

Fitting in to the historical landscape of La Grange is very important, Creber says. “La Grange has a lot of old, vintage homes. They’re not torn down, they’re fixed up. Before a homeowner comes up mysuburbanlife.com/magazine

with a concept of a house they saw online or in Pinterest, they have an idea. In this case, we walked the neighborhood to make sure the house was not a duplication of a design. [The owners’s] intent was to make the house look like it’s been there forever.”

The vintage-styled home now is on the market, and according to Mahon, the perfect buyer for this house would be “someone who understand old homes and charm but wants new and wants character,” Mahon says.

“The owners built it for themselves. They put a lot of time and thought with it to be period-specific to the Second Empire. It has a feminine look with the mansard roof and finials, but when you walk in and see the four fireplaces, it’s masculine.”

The house, at 125 S. Spring Ave., La Grange, has five bedrooms, five bathrooms and is 6,219 square feet. It was constructed in 2002 and has an asking price of $1.2499 million.

During the early days, visitations were hosted in families’ homes.

Todd’s grandfather would hire a carpenter to remove a window to get the casket into the home, and then wedge it back in place for the wake. “We have come a long way since then,” Todd says.

The Hitzeman family has maintained an extensive history of high standards and services. In 1963, the firm made its new home in Brookfield. “Our clients throughout the Western Suburbs know that they can count

Fireside Woodfired Pizza Café LaGrange restaurant is much more than just a pizza place

I

Celebrating 4-½ years in downtown Lagrange, Fireside Woodfired Pizza Café is a family-owned restaurant that specializes in fresh custom-made open-flame pizza.

While in his early-20s, Greg Gron got his experience in the restaurant business with familiar names such as Denny’s, Howard Johnsons, and Sheraton. Gron, the co-owner of Fireside Woodfired Pizza Café, took his first leap into ownership with a small restaurant in Elmhurst.

After retiring from the trades as a carpenter and a hiatus of 40 years removed from the business, Gron says he was looking for a change.

“I talked with my wife and kids and Fireside was born,” he says.

“We spent almost a year hunting for a location and we decided on LaGrange. We felt it was a very wholesome civic community and the residents support a great downtown shopping district.”

Gron says the family built the restaurant themselves, with most of the family having some part in it. He describes it as a true labor of love. “As for the menu,” he says, “well, that was an easy choice, we all love pizza.”

According to Gron, the ‘family’ part of the family-owned business is well represented.

“My youngest daughter, who is culinary school trained, handles the everyday operations, while my daughter-in-law

oversees the financials for the day to day operations,” Gron says.

Fireside’s hand-crafted dough is prepared fresh every morning. Resting for 48 hours, the dough achieves maximum depth of flavor and, when hand-stretched and topped with the finest ingredients, it heads into the Valerio oven where it is baked to perfection and becomes Fireside’s signature menu item.

“We spent a lot of time developing our menu to fit our customers. We made a lot of changes in our first year, because we wanted our customers to know we’re not just another pizza place,” says Gron. “We work very hard to produce the best possible product. We make our own soups, salad dressings, sauces, and dips from scratch. We fry our own chips and cook our chicken, turkey, sausage, pork, and beef.”

Gron says a lot of the success rests on the employees’ efforts. “We spend a lot of time with our employees, developing the skills they need to provide the best possible service and overall product knowledge to our customers,” he says. “A lot of people are unaware of what woodfired pizza is, so we are glad to help them through the menu.

We want our employees to know the value of care and consistency that goes into our product.”

hen Kuratko Funeral Home first opened in North Riverside more than 68 years ago, Harry Truman was president and only one in ten Americans owned a television. Fast-forward to 2016 and Frank and Debbie Nosek find themselves celebrating their tenth year of ownership of Kuratko-Nosek Funeral Home.

A

self-professed “theater brat from way back” Eddie Sugarman has traveled the country, working in various theatrical settings. When he moved to Western Springs in 2005, he was delighted to learn of the village’s very real jewel of a theater with an impressive history. Sugarman enthusiastically became involved with the Theatre of Western Springs (TWS) and has been its executive artistic director for the past two years.

Founded in 1919 by local resident Mary Cattell, TWS was, for many years, completely volunteerdriven. “Over the years, things have evolved a bit and we now have a small professional staff, and an enormous number of committed volunteers who we call ‘actives,’” Sugarman says. Not only are the actives actors and directors, but also take charge of virtually every aspect of the theater.

“We’re doing Neil Simon’s Rumors which is a tremendously funny farce. People love him. But if we did seven Neil Simon shows it would be boring, so we change it up. We vary the season for our audiences and to keep them on their toes and entertain them, and for the company here to stretch ourselves and do different kinds of theater.”

“Theatre of Western Springs is a remarkable place, Sugarman says.

I’ll come to work and sometimes take a minute and look around. In our different spaces there are so many different people who are able to come and fulfill themselves in so many ways.

We’ll have a children’s musical theater class downstairs, a crew painting on stage and a volunteer crew pulling weeds outside. Quite literally, we’ve had people ages 5-100 here working towards a common goal and enjoying themselves. I’ve never been a part of a place like that and it’s very very inspiring. I love it and people love being a part of things here. It’s a special resource to have in Western Springs,”

Jingle Mingle is the Village’s Annual kickoff to the Holiday Season! A parade featuring various children’s school groups, businesses, local fire districts, and community groups will march through the Village Green starting at 6:00 p.m. sharp!

One very special guest will also arrive in Burr Ridge that day, just to check up on all the kids and make sure they’re on the nice list. 4 DAY COMPREHENSIVE ENCAUSTIC PAINTING WORKSHOP WHEN: 9 am to 4 pm WHERE: La Grange Art League, upstairs studio Class Levels: Beginner--Intermediate, this class may be repeated by those who wish to further enhance their study fundamental encaustic techniques.

Join artist Sarah Rehmer for a 4 day comprehensive workshop at the La Grange Art League.Participants that are new to working with wax will gain a thorough understanding of the medium and method.

We invite artists that are already familiar with the encaustics to come and continue building their skills.

We begin with a historical overview, introducing the classical method of encaustic painting, and then move into the 21st Century, demonstrating a wide variety of ways that encaustic can be used by contemporary artists today. Artists working in almost any medium will find these workshops are an exciting opportunity to expand their visual vocabulary with wax.

Students are encouraged to bring an open mind and a willingness to experiment with a new material. We will explore encaustic as a pure painting medium as well as a component or enhancement of mixed media works. Gelatin plate print making is a fun and easy way to create unique, and singular “mono prints” without the use of a press. In this workshop we will discuss how to make your own plate at home, as well as try a variety of papers in the printing process.

Students will have access to pre-made stencils, as well as have access to materials to create their own. We will even have time for students to make a few unique holiday cards.
